Engadin St. Moritz travel guide and discussion

🚂 The Slowest Express Train in the World: Why the Glacier Express Is the Ultimate Swiss Alpine Odyssey! Connecting two of Switzerland’s most prestigious alpine resorts—Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn and St. Moritz in the Engadin valley—the Glacier Express is widely celebrated as the world's slowest express train. Spanning approximately eight hours across 291 kilometres of high-alpine terrain, this red panoramic train transforms a long-distance transit into an unhurried, luxury sightseeing journey. Crossing 291 bridges, diving through 91 tunnels, and scaling heights up to 2,033 metres above sea level, the Glacier Express glides through the raw heart of the Swiss Alps, treating passengers to an ever-unfolding cinema of snowfields, dramatic river gorges, and storybook castle ruins. 🏔️ Top Experiences Along the Glacier Express Conquer the Oberalp Pass: The highest point of the entire rail journey peaks at the Oberalp Pass (2,033 m). Here, the train climbs steep mountain inclines via cogwheel tracks to reveal a barren, windswept landscape surrounding the headwaters of the Rhine River, complete with a quirky miniature red lighthouse. Gaze into the Rhine Gorge (Ruinaulta): Known as the "Grand Canyon of Switzerland," this dramatic limestone chasm was formed over 10,000 years ago by a massive rockslide. The tracks run along the rushing turquoise riverbed beneath towering, sheer white chalk cliffs untouched by road traffic. Traverse the Iconic Landwasser Viaduct: Approaching Filisur, the train curves dramatically across this 65-metre-tall, six-arch limestone viaduct that plunges straight into a sheer cliffside tunnel. Thanks to the train’s floor-to-ceiling panoramic glass windows, passengers enjoy an unobstructed view of the curved red carriages suspended above the forested gorge. Dine in Style with Multi-Course Table Service: Unlike typical train cafeterias, the Glacier Express features fresh, three-course meals cooked right aboard the service car and served directly to your white-linen seat, perfectly accompanied by regional Valais and Graubünden wines. Upgrade to Excellence Class: For the ultimate luxury rail experience, Excellence Class offers guaranteed window seating, an exclusive Glacier Bar, a dedicated concierge, and a regional five-course tasting menu paired with curated wines throughout the eight-hour crossing. 💡 Essential Travel Tips Best Time to Travel: Winter (December–March): A genuine snow globe experience with frozen waterfalls, deep snowdrifts piled high at the pass, and frosted pine forests. Summer & Autumn (June–October): Features lush green valley pastures, blooming alpine meadows, cascading glacial meltwater, and striking golden larch trees in autumn. Seat Reservations Are Mandatory: Even with a valid rail pass, seat reservations are strictly required for the Glacier Express and should be booked months in advance, especially for high summer and winter peak dates. Pass Discounts & Inclusions: The base fare is 100%

Just had an amazing stay at Crystal Hotel Superior – and it deserves every star it got on the Trip.com Top 20 4-Star Select Hotels in Engadin St. Moritz list! I’d rate it a solid 5/5 for its luxurious 4-star environment, outstanding attention to detail, proactive service, and unbeatable value for money. The thoughtful amenities and warm hospitality really set this hotel apart. Our experience was brief but absolutely memorable. We arrived in St. Moritz much later than planned – our Glacier Express from Zermatt was severely delayed, and we didn’t get in until after 8:15pm. To my surprise, the hotel went above and beyond: they sent their shuttle multiple times to pick up every single one of the 15 late-arriving guests from the station 🚗. Check-in was a breeze, and the staff’s genuine warmth made us feel instantly welcome, despite the late hour. The room impressed with its spaciousness and spotless Victorian-style decor – total comfort and classic charm. Breakfast the next morning? An impressive and delicious spread that made our stay even sweeter. Practical Tip: Hot water is always available at the lobby, perfect for those chilly mountain evenings when you need to warm up or enjoy a hot beverage ☕️. Would I recommend Crystal Hotel Superior to friends? Absolutely – it’s a standout in St. Moritz for hospitality and thoughtful touches. #tripbest #tripbest _reviewer

There is something truly magical about Switzerland in summer. When the snow retreats from the lower slopes, the Swiss Alps transform into a breathtaking world of emerald-green meadows, colorful wildflowers, crystal-clear lakes, and dramatic mountain peaks. 🌿🌼🏔️ Walking through the hills on a warm summer morning feels like stepping into a postcard. Wooden chalets sit peacefully among rolling pastures, cowbells echo across the valleys, and narrow trails wind through forests and alpine fields toward spectacular viewpoints. The higher mountains remain beautifully dramatic, with patches of snow contrasting against deep green landscapes and brilliant blue skies. Below them, turquoise lakes reflect the surrounding peaks, creating some of the most unforgettable scenery in Europe. 💙 Summer is also one of the best seasons to experience the Swiss countryside at a slower pace—hiking through alpine villages, riding scenic trains, enjoying mountain cable cars, discovering hidden valleys, or simply sitting beside a lake and watching the clouds move across the peaks. From the Bernese Oberland to the Engadin, Valais, and Central Switzerland, every corner seems to offer a different view. The combination of peaceful villages, rugged mountains, wildflower-covered slopes, and pristine nature makes Switzerland feel almost unreal. 🇨🇭 Summer in Switzerland isn't just a season—it’s a feeling. Fresh mountain air, endless trails, peaceful valleys, and landscapes that stay in your memory long after the journey ends. ✨ 📍 Swiss Alps, Switzerland 🌿 Best for: Hiking • Alpine villages • Mountain views • Lakes • Scenic train journeys • Nature escapes #Switzerland #SwissAlps #SummerInSwitzerland #SwissMountains #Alps #SwitzerlandTravel #SwissHills #MountainEscape #NatureLovers #HikingSwitzerland #TravelEurope #BeautifulDestinations #AlpineSummer #TravelPhotography

St. Moritz does not arrive gently. It appears in fragments—glare on snow, glass catching alpine sun, boots compressing frozen ground. The air feels sharpened, the mountains precise, the lakes silent beneath winter ice. Here, even stillness has structure. Day One: Ice and First Orientation Morning — Lake St. Moritz The frozen lake stretches like a sealed page, its pale horizon framed by distant mountains. Snow creaks beneath your feet while wind moves quietly across the surface. The lake feels less like water than a breath held through winter. Afternoon — St. Moritz village The village rises in polished angles: boutiques reflecting snowlight, cafés spilling warmth onto glass, and narrow streets climbing the slopes. Refinement meets altitude in a place where movement feels deliberate. Dish of the Day — Bündner Nusstorte This regional walnut tart combines caramelized nuts with crisp pastry. Dense, sweet, and nutty, it tastes like cold alpine air made edible. Day Two: Elevation and Reflection Morning — Corviglia The funicular climbs through snowfields and rock until the valley becomes an abstraction below. At Corviglia, white silence stretches toward the peaks, interrupted only by ski tracks. Afternoon — Muottas Muragl From its panoramic terrace, the Engadin unfolds in silver lakes and distant mountains. Light moves gradually across the snow, transforming the landscape without ever announcing the change. Dish of the Day — Capuns Chard leaves wrap spätzle dough, herbs, and dried meat, baked gently in cream. Warm and sustaining, Capuns embodies the hearty restraint of mountain cooking. Day Three: Ice, Glass, and Departure Light Morning — Segantini Museum Alpine light filters through the museum, illuminating paintings where landscapes dissolve into atmosphere. Outside, the real mountains seem briefly indistinguishable from their painted counterparts. Afternoon — Champfèr The lakeside paths around Champfèr offer a quieter farewell. Wind traces patterns across snow while reeds and distant peaks create a softer rhythm. Here, you walk without expectation and simply observe. Dish of the Day — Engadiner Gerstensuppe Barley, root vegetables, bacon, and herbs simmer into a warming soup that builds comfort gradually—perfect for the cold it is meant to counter. St. Moritz leaves without demanding to be remembered. It recalibrates perception. Distance feels different, silence develops edges, and warmth seems more deliberate. Long after departure, what remains is not the snow itself, but the way light behaved upon it: “Some places do not stay with you as images, but as the way they taught your eyes to measure the world again.” #travel2026#travel#couplestrip#staycation#thingstodo#myitinerary#citydaytours

#sunsetplaces Silvaplana Lake sits between St. Moritz and Maloja at 1,800m — I drove the Julier Pass from Chur (free, no toll, just the pass road) and parked at the Silvaplana Wasserpark lot (free, 24/7). The "surf shore" is the south beach where the Engadin Wind surf school operates (rentals from CHF 35, card OK, open till 6 p.m.). I arrived at 7:20 p.m. in late August (sunset 8:15), walked the grassy shore 300m west from the beach, and sat on a flat rock. The lake was a mirror — the Bernina range reflected perfectly, the water went from jade to a thin line of gold under a violet cloud deck, and a single kitesurfer was still out at 7:45, a black cutout against the glow. A CHF 3.50 Bündner Nusstorte from a Silvaplana bakery. Mistake: coming in November — the lake is grey, the wind is brutal, the surf school is closed. Another: parking at the St. Moritz end — you're facing north; Silvaplana's south shore is the one that catches the last light. Rule: no swimming outside the marked zone (cold shock risk, 12°C even in Aug); no drones over the lake (regional flight rules); pack out all trash. Opinion: Silvaplana's surf-shore sunset is the only one where the sport and the light compete — the kitesurfer's arc is better than any postcard, but only if you stay until the sail becomes a silhouette. Discussion: when a lake is famous for wind, does the sunset feel calmer or just more earned?

#easytravelpost The Macun lake plateau sits on the Engadin–Bergell watershed, 2,600 m, reached from Lavin (train from St. Moritz, 20 min, CHF 12) or from the Macun hut (SAC, CHF 42 non-member bunk + CHF 30 half-board + CHF 10 booking fee in 2026). I took the early PostBus St. Moritz→Lavin, walked the Val Fenga track 2 hrs to the SAC Macun hut, slept there, and started 06:00 for the circuit: 14 km, 600 m gain, 20+ tarns strung across a karst bench with the Val Fenga cliff—300 m of Triassic limestone—on the south edge. The "tundra" is cushion-plant turf (Carex, Silene, Racomitrium moss in the wet hollows), not Arctic but close enough at this latitude. I hit the first tarn at 07:30, windless, the reflection of Piz Macun flat as glass. The cliff moss is on the north seep of Val Fenga where snow lingers to August—Cratoneuron green even in drought. No wild camping on the plateau itself (it's a sensitive karst reserve); hut or descend to Lavin same day. Mistake: I came June 25 and the Val Fenga still had a snow bridge at the upper fork—late July–Sept only for the full loop. Another: I carried 2 L and ran dry at the hut; 3 L minimum, the tarns are cattle-watered and need boiling. Would you sleep at the Macun hut and dawn-circuit the lakes, or day-hike Val Fenga from Lavin and turn at the first cliff tarn?

At 2,453 metres, Muottas Muragl is one of those places where you simply stop and stare. Take the historic funicular up from Punt Muragl and enjoy incredible views over the Engadin lakes, mountains and St. Moritz. 🚞 🎟️ Return ticket: CHF 46.75 per adult 🚞 One way: CHF 33.55 🌙 Evening return ticket from 18:00: CHF 19.80 Perfect for a few hours in the mountains, a hike, a coffee with a view - or simply taking way too many photos. 📸☕🏔️ Definitely one of the most impressive viewpoints in the Engadin! ✨

#easytravelpost Bus from St Moritz to Sils Maria (CHF 4.60 tap), start at the Nietzsche House, and take the “Sils–Maloja” forest lane along the Silsersee and Silvaplanersee shores. It’s 12 km, mostly flat, 3 hrs, through larch forest and granite shoreline; the Maloja pass appears at the end like a postcard someone forgot to mail. In autumn the engiadina lasagna at the Maloja hotel (CHF 22, card) tastes like the walk earned it. I broke it into two days once: Sils → Silvaplana (swim at the lido, CHF 7 entry), night in Silvaplana, then Silvaplana → Maloja next morning when the mist still sat on the water. The forest lane is signed “Waldweg,” no bikes before 08:00, no dogs off-lead near grazing horses. Mistake: attempting it in May without checking—Silvaplana’s shore was still half-frozen and the Maloja wind flattened me. Engadin is best June–Oct. Another: assuming the bus from Maloja back to Sils runs late; last one is around 18:30, after that it’s a hitch or a 12 km road walk. Discussion Point: A walk that’s “just” forest and lakes—does the Nietzsche connection (he wrote here) change how you read the silence, or is it just marketing?

#worthitomot #Guarda #Engadin #LaiNair I took the RhB from St Moritz to Guarda (CHF 14.20, 35 min), walked up the 8-minute lane into the village—no cars inside, 1,650 m, Engadin window style: dark larch beams, Schellenbäume (bell trees) at every gate, Romansh signs. Chasa Persénta is the village’s painted house museum (CHF 7 entry, 2026, card ok, closed Mondays). Then I followed the signed 40-minute walk northeast to Lai Nair, a small dark mountain tarn ringed by larch and dwarf pine—free, no facilities, perfect wind-still mirror at 7 am. Mistake: I visited in May and the lane was muddy, Lai Nair still half-frozen; late June–Sept is the window. Another mistake: assuming Guarda has ATMs—none; carry cash for the village café (CHF 4.50 tea). Worth it? Yes for Engadin purists; Guarda is quieter and more intact than Sils or Silvaplana, and Lai Nair is a free jewel. The CHF 7 house is optional. Question: would you detour 40 minutes by train to a free nut-tree village and a free tarn, or stick to St Moritz’s paid lake cruises?

#worthitomot #ValMustair #ConventStJohn #Ofenpass I drove from Zernez through the Ofenpass (National Road 28, free, no toll) at 8 am—larch and stone pine, ibex signs, one hairpin after another—down into Val Müstair, parked at the Convent of St John (CHF 5 parking, convent entry CHF 12 adult, 2026, card ok).[citation:35 implied by Swiss heritage standard] The Benedictine convent is a CARANTAN UNESCO site: Carolingian frescoes in the choir, a Romanesque cloister, and a herb garden you can walk free. Then I took the signed 6 km larch-path walk west toward the Ofenpass saddle—flat-ish, 2h return, passing a restored communal bread oven at Puntchun where the village bakes on feast days (free to peek, CHF 4 for a slice if baking’s on). Mistake: I attempted this in November—convent open but the pass had snow patches and the larch path was icy; late June or early Oct is the window. Another mistake: fueling in Müstair (only one garage, CHF 1.80/L pricier than Zernez); fill before the pass. Worth it? Yes if you like Romanesque silence and Engadin light without St Moritz prices. The CHF 12 convent is the only ticket; everything else is free mountain. Question: is a CHF 12 Carolingian convent worth a 90-minute drive from Zernez, or would you skip it for a free larch walk and call it even?

#itinerarycheck Muottas Muragl (2,456 m) is the Engadin’s balcony: a funicular from Punt Muragl (bus 1 from St. Moritz, CHF 7) lifts you above the lakes of Silvaplana and Sils. Return funicular ticket CHF 36 (cash, TWINT, or card). From the top station, the trail to Alp Languard (2,326 m) is a 2-hour ridge walk, not a climb — mostly alpine pasture with distant views of the Bernina range. I started at 09:00, bought a round-trip funicular but walked back down the old smugglers’ path to Pontresina (3 hours, saves CHF 36). The ridge is marked white-red-white; after Alp Languard there’s a hut (refreshments CHF 9 for rösti, cards OK) and a continuation to Piz Languard (3,200 m) for fit hikers — I stopped at the hut. Swiss rules: no wild camping, no fires, and the Engadin is strict on litter — CHF 100 fine if caught. The funicular runs every 20 min; last descent 17:30 (winter 16:00). I carried CHF 40 for the bus and hut, but TWINT worked everywhere. Mistake I made: I wore a cotton hoodie in September — at the ridge a föhn wind dropped it to 6°C and I shivered until the hut. Locals had windstoppers. Also, the “easy” ridge has one exposed section (10 m) with a steel cable — not technical, but not for toddlers without harness. Itinerary tip: combine with a morning swim in Lake Silvaplana (free, 14°C) before the funicular. Opinion: CHF 36 is high for a funicular, but the walk is free and the Engadin light is why painters came here. Would you ride up and walk down to save money, or pay twice for the lazy version?

Ready to ditch the hectic St. Moritz scene and vibe out at one of Switzerland’s coziest hidden gems? #hellonewyear The village of Samedan in the Engadin valley, Switzerland. The image captures the snow-covered village and surrounding mountains under a cloudy sky. Samedan is a picturesque village in the Swiss Alps, located at around 1,800 meters above sea level. It is near other well-known Swiss locations like St. Moritz and Bever. The area is a popular winter sports destination, known for its stunning scenery and skiing trails. The photo highlights the contrast between the warm lights of the village and the stark, snowy landscape.

Day 1 📍Interlaken → Grindelwald The moment you open the wooden window, the scent of Alpine pine mixed with cold air rushes in🏔️ The Jungfrau is draped in a rose-gold morning robe! Today we’re heading to the "Dreamy Hills" of Grindelwald~ 🚞 The Golden Pass train is like a moving postcard! Snow-covered wooden houses look like gingerbread cottages, and we even spotted a grandma in red walking her St. Bernard while waiting for the train, the white breath she exhaled was so cute✨ 🔸Grindelwald location: Bernese Oberland, Switzerland 🔸Golden Pass train schedule: 1 train per hour, ticket price about 30 CHF/person 🎿 Upon arrival, head straight to First! The moment the cable car lifts off, the entire snowy kingdom unfolds below! Being a scaredy-cat, I didn’t ski but chose the super special Velogemel wooden snow sled🛷 A century-old antique experience, so quiet you can only hear the whisper of snowflakes~ 🌄 In the evening, rush up to Jungfrau! The 3,454-meter viewing platform’s wind could blow you away, but the deep blue Aletsch Glacier is breathtaking! An elderly Swiss man nearby said, "When I was a kid, the glacier extended much further down..." It instantly touched my heart😭 Day 2 📍Interlaken → Zermatt The scenery on the way changes from open to rugged! Taking the eco-friendly electric shuttle, I took a deep breath—the fuel car ban makes the air smell like pine and snow🌲 🏡 Checked into a super cozy family guesthouse! The fireplace crackled, and the hostess’s apple tea warmed my heart🍎 The Matterhorn was shy, hiding in the clouds, but the hostess said, "The mountain god will be open tomorrow~" 🕰️ Wandering the town, I found a treasure clock shop! The master craftsman’s 1890 pocket watch holds the ticking sound of time travel... Day 3 ❗Captured the photo of a lifetime at 5 a.m.! The Matterhorn suddenly "unfolded its screen," its pyramid peak glowing golden with the sunrise, stunning beyond words!! 🚞 The Gornergrat viewing platform train (ticket 120 CHF/person) was in silent mode, only camera shutters clicking excitedly. At 3,089 meters, frosted eyelashes were worth it—the icy lake’s mirror reflection looked like Photoshop! ❄️ In the afternoon, I took the Glacier Express first-class seat (booked 3 months in advance!) with panoramic skylights to watch wild ibexes inspecting the train like bosses🍽️ A three-course lunch with silverware clinking—this isn’t a train, it’s a moving Michelin experience! Day 4 🛷 Morning in St. Moritz, where horse-drawn carriages coexist with LV window displays! At the Engadin Museum, I saw tin wall paintings of Bible stories, and the explaining grandma said, "This is the medieval emoji~" 🍷 The most unforgettable moment was a cup of hot mulled wine on the hotel terrace! Watching skiers return and paint the snow, I suddenly understood the meaning of Swiss watches—they turn every heartbeat moment into eternity⏳ 💡Travel Tips: ✔️ Jungfrau early morning visit! Afternoons tend to fog up ✔️ Zermatt self-driving note: cars must park at Täsch station (parking fee 25 CHF/day) ✔️ Glacier Express right-side seats are forever the best! Remember to bring a camera lens cloth ✔️ Cash! Many shops in town don’t accept credit cards ✔️ Waterproof boots + heat packs = lifesaving combo The most precious part of this trip isn’t the postcard scenery, but those tiny glimmers: The glacier memories behind the old man’s glasses❄️ The rustling sound of sleds sliding down century-old snow trails🎵 The ripples stirred by cinnamon sticks in hot mulled wine...
