I took a bus to Fengcheng from the Dandong Passenger Station (￥17), arriving at Phoenix Mountain in about 1 hour and 20 minutes. There is a direct bus to Dandong and Fengcheng. The first peak of Fengcheng City, 1208 meters above sea level, is located in the park. In the scenic area, you can take the battery car train 15 yuan / person, so you can save your feet. Liang Qichao iced drink parlor next door is worth a visit; it’s quiet and the courtyard is peaceful. See the Fish Mouth in Dujiangyan in the morning and take the stroller across the Anlan Suspension Bridge. Back from Dandong | I really don't recommend visiting in September–October 😭 Here's some honest advice. The famous ginkgo avenue on Jiuwei Road won't turn completely yellow until after the end of October. If you rush here specifically to take epic autumn photos, you'll likely be disappointed, and the letdown will be huge. 2. The temperature difference is brutal, and it's hard to pack clothes. It's warm and sunny during the day, and you can even wear short sleeves. But the wind by the Yalu River is fierce! As soon as the sun sets, the temperature drops suddenly—it's 6–7 degrees colder than in the city center. You'll be sweating during the day and freezing at night, and a thin jacket won't cut it. You'll be hot one minute and cold the next, which makes it easy to catch a cold, and planning your outfits is a huge headache. 3. The attractions are far apart, and it's a real struggle without a car. It's convenient enough to walk around the Broken Bridge and Andong Old Street in the city center. Hushan Great Wall is okay, too—you can get there in half an hour by taxi. But if you want to go to Lvjiang Village or the Hunjiang River Bend? It's a 2–3 hour one-way trip from the city, all on winding mountain roads. There are very few bus services, so you have to charter a car or carpool, which costs a lot. You'll spend most of your day on the road, just taking a quick look at things, leaving you physically and mentally exhausted. If you're lazy or get carsick, think twice! 4. There are many traps by the river, and it's easy for visitors to get scammed. There are people soliciting customers near the Broken Bridge for low-priced boat tours and one-day border trips. The prices look cheap, but once you're on the boat, you'll find the itinerary is shortened and there are all sorts of extra fees. Be careful with roadside stalls selling local specialties or souvenirs—it's a shady business. When eating seafood, always ask for the price in advance and, if possible, have it weighed in front of you. Don't just pick a random restaurant near the tourist spots, as it's easy to get ripped off. 5. Many water activities are closing down. As the temperature drops in late September, river rafting basically shuts down. But the autumn scenery isn't quite there, the temperature difference is ridiculous, and long-distance travel is exhausting. If you're coming specifically for red maple leaves and ginkgo, come between late October and early November for a much better experience 🍂

Arrive at the Yungang Grottoes before 8 AM, when the slanting light fills the caves and the folds in the Buddha statues' robes are clearly visible. ⏰ After 10 AM tour buses arrive by the load, and you’ll just be pushed along by the crowds. You must book a separate time to climb the Hanging Monastery. Daily visitor limits apply, and if you don’t get a slot you can only look up from the base of the mountain. ⚠️ If you’re afraid of heights your legs may give out. The wooden walkways are narrow, so avoid very wide skirts. Climbing Mount Hengshan (North) takes about 4 hours. Trying to see both in one day will be rushed. I recommend choosing only Tianluokeng; the four dishes and one soup layout looks most complete from the observation deck. ⚠️ There’s an extra fee to go upstairs inside the tulou—ask first before paying. Emerald Lake displays layered colors and the afternoon light is good, but the wind can blow salt onto your face, so wear sunglasses. Chaka Salt Lake now requires a shuttle to enter. If you want mirror-like reflections, go early; by noon it’s crowded and the water gets muddy. 📍 Driving times between the lakes are long—bring water and snacks. If you’re prone to altitude sickness, take medication in advance and don’t try to tough it out. 07 Longnan | Gansu Tianchi in Wen County is tucked in the mountains; the lake is deep green and surrounded by primary forest. ⏰ It’s best to visit after rain—the mist winds around the mountainside like an ink wash. ⚠️ Mountain roads are very twisty and can cause motion sickness—use motion-sickness patches ahead of time. Guan'egou breaks into Guanzhu Gorge and Eman Gorge; doing both in one day is exhausting. I suggest just doing Guanzhu Gorge—the waterfalls and calcified pools are concentrated there and the boardwalks are easy. 📍 There’s a shuttle at the gorge entrance—don’t force your way in on foot; save your energy for the trail inside. Longnan overall isn’t crowded, even during Mid-Autumn and National Day. 🍜 Locals eat potato jiaotuan and walnut buns—flavors tend to be sour and spicy, so tell them in advance if you can’t handle it. It’s suited to people who want a quiet mountain-and-water trip. 08 Dandong | Liaoning Walk the Broken Bridge on the Yalu River after the lights come on at night—the river breeze is cool and the lights on the far bank are dim, creating a strong contrast. ⏰ Go onto the bridge around 6:30 PM at dusk—photos look best before it’s fully dark. ⚠️ People at the bridge will try to get you onto sightseeing boats at inflated prices—if you want to go, buy tickets at the official dock. Phoenix Mountain is known for being steep; the Old Ox Back section requires using both hands and feet—avoid it if you’re afraid of heights or are with young children. 📍 It’s about a 1-hour ride from downtown Dandong to Fengcheng, and there are storage lockers at the mountain base. Kuandian Hekou and Lujiang Village are best reached by car; Lujiang Village has rapeseed flower fields and river-bay morning mist in autumn. 🚄 There are buses from Dandong Station to Kuandian, but services are infrequent—get there early. 🍜 Back in the city, try yellow clams and menzi; the riverside night market is about half the price of stalls at the attraction entrance.
