Just returned from Laibin. I really don't recommend going in summer, because it's just too...
stuffy + sunny + mosquito-infested 🥵 In August, the city center is 35°C+ with high humidity. Walking along the Hongshui River trail feels like a sauna, and the mosquitoes in Baiyacao Grand Canyon can carry a person away. But if you get up early to hike, hide indoors/soak in hot springs at noon, and eat rice noodles by the river in the evening, this "underrated city in central Guangxi" with its Zhuang-Yao blend and appealing prices is actually amazing if you play it smart 👇
🏞️ 3-day, 2-night "summer escape" itinerary for lazy travelers
Day 1 Xingbin city center local life tour (start at 8 AM)
Laibin Museum (free reservation, enjoy air conditioning while viewing bronze drums and Zhuang brocade) > Ride a shared bike along the Hongshui River Hundred-Mile Gallery to see the reflection of the peaks > Hide in a municipal building/shopping mall at noon
In the evening, enjoy the breeze and golden light at Binjiang Park + Pangu Culture Park > Night out at Zhenghe Pedestrian Street/Xiangsi Li: Heshan luosifen, luosifen with duck feet hotpot, Luo Ji beef offal hotpot, suanye mango flower
Day 2 Jinxiu Dayao Mountain (depart at 7:00 AM, 23°C zone)
Shengtang Mountain (admission 60–61 CNY, average temperature 23°C in July, sea of clouds and stone forest, but go up before 8 AM to avoid sun exposure) > If you're afraid of getting tired, go to Panwangjie in Dayao Mountain instead (cable car + elevator, no stairs to see Yao culture)
In the afternoon, bamboo raft drifting on Shengtang Lake (88 CNY, water temperature 5°C lower than the city) > Stay overnight in a Yao village guesthouse, drink oil tea, and eat bamboo tube chicken
Day 3 Wuxuan + Xincheng cultural tour
In the morning, Baiya Grand Canyon (Wuxuan, Danxia waterfall + shaded stream tracing, leave before 1 PM, bring a light jacket + mosquito repellent)
In the afternoon, Mo Tusi Yamen in Xincheng ("Zhuang Palace Museum," 40–50 CNY, many indoor exhibits so no fear of sun exposure, great for Hanfu photos) > Before returning, enjoy a night soak at Guxiang Hot Spring in Xiangzhou (55 CNY, soaking in summer nights is surprisingly refreshing)
🍜 Must-eats (Laibin's rice noodles are milder than Liuzhou's)
· Sheng liao zhu fen / Heshan luosifen (8 CNY, bone broth style, not pungent)
· Wuxuan red yeast fermented rice stir-fried pork intestines (wine-fragrant, sour, spicy, local soul food)
· Xiangzhou beef offal hotpot, Xincheng big zongzi, five-color glutinous rice
· Yao family bamboo tube rice + cured meat, oil tea with ciba
· Night market additions: Huaihua fen tangshui (summer heat relief), youdui, rice dumplings
⚠️ Avoid these pitfalls
· Jinxiu mountainous areas have a day-night temperature difference of 15°C+, a light jacket is a must for the mountain top, don't believe "no jacket needed in summer"
· Baiyacao/Shengtang Grand Canyon are VIP spots for leeches and mosquitoes, bring mosquito repellent + long socks + non-slip shoes
· Attractions are spread out (Jinxiu/Wuxuan/Xincheng/Xiangzhou each in a different area), if you don't drive, hire a car; public transport can make you doubt your life choices
· Shengtang Mountain stops selling tickets at 4:00 PM, sleeping in means a wasted trip; choose the cable car ticket for Panwangjie, don't try to climb it
· Best season is April–May for azaleas/September–October for cool autumn weather. In summer, follow the formula: "early morning mountain, noon indoors, evening river, night noodles"
