Husavik travel guide and discussion

Húsavík ,small towns where we spent a night during our road trip around Iceland. Located on the shores of Skjálfandi Bay in North Iceland, Húsavík is often referred to as the whale-watching capital of Iceland. We stayed at Bjarnabúð, a cozy accommodation near the waterfront. The location was great, with views overlooking the harbor and the colorful town. It was a peaceful place to relax and the property was clean and in good condition. One of the main reasons we chose to stay in Húsavík was for a whale-watching tour. Unfortunately, we weren't lucky enough to spot any whales on the day we went out. Even so, I still felt the trip was worthwhile. Being out on the open water, surrounded by mountains and dramatic Icelandic scenery, was a memorable experience in itself. Sometimes wildlife doesn't cooperate, but the journey was beautiful. The town itself is charming with colorful houses and a picturesque harbor. We also drove up to Húsavík Viewing Point, which offers spectacular panoramic views over the town, the bay, and the surrounding mountains. The contrast between the deep blue ocean and the rugged Icelandic landscape was stunning and definitely worth the short drive. Whale Watching Tours🐋 There are several reputable whale-watching companies operating from Húsavík, including: · North Sailing – One of the oldest and most well-known whale-watching operators in Iceland, famous for its traditional wooden boats and environmentally conscious tours. · Friends of Moby Dick – A smaller local operator offering whale-watching experiences with knowledgeable guides and a more intimate atmosphere. Húsavík Church ⛪ Beautiful old wooden church in the heart of town, built in 1907, known for its unique Swiss chalet-style architecture. . GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths🌅 Another experience that I think you should try when visiting Húsavík is GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths. Unfortunately, it was raining on the day we plan to visit.during our visit, so we decided not to go. Looking back, it's probably the one thing I wish we had made time for. GeoSea features naturally heated seawater rich in minerals. The infinity pools sit on a cliff overlooking Skjálfandi Bay, offering breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding mountains. If you've been to Húsavík and tried GeoSea, I'd love to hear what you thought. It remains on my list for the next time I visit Iceland! #husavik #iceland #icelandtravel #icelandtrip

Arrived in Húsavík at 2:56 PM. First, I went to the Netto supermarket to buy food, then checked into the guesthouse. The original plan was to go whale watching the next day, but since it was only a little past 3:00 PM after checking in, I decided to go whale watching immediately. I had picked up a Húsavík whale watching brochure at a guesthouse I stayed at a few days prior, and a company called North Sailing had a boat departing at 4:30 PM, so I headed out to the whale watching pier at 3:51 PM. I walked to the North Sailing ticket office at 3:56 PM; the whale watching pier is right below it. The 3-hour whale watching tour price listed in their brochure was 12,990 ISK, but buying tickets on-site offered a small discount, bringing the price to 12,591 ISK. I bought a ticket for the 4:30 PM departure. With half an hour until the boat left, I took photos of the nearby scenery. I arrived at the pier to line up for boarding at 4:12 PM. After boarding, I was given an all-in-one thermal waterproof suit to put on. We left the pier at 4:29 PM. The guide on the boat was stationed high up on the bridge, constantly sharing knowledge about whales and local marine geography while keeping a sharp lookout on the sea. Whenever they spotted signs of a whale, they would immediately announce the clock position, and passengers would scramble from one side of the boat to the other. We saw a whale surface just 23 minutes after leaving the pier. After that, we saw a whale show its back and tail about every 15–20 minutes. We saw them 8 times in total, though unfortunately, most were quite far away and only surfaced for a few seconds, making it fleeting to watch or take photos. There is a small island in the bay called Lundey (Puffin Island), where about 200,000 puffins nest during the breeding season each year. May to August is puffin-watching season, and all whale watching companies in Húsavík offer whale watching + puffin watching tours. The 3.5-hour whale and puffin watching tour offered by North Sailing costs 16,490 ISK. The whale watching activity was limited to the bay, and with light wind and small waves that day, the boat ride was smooth. There were several whale watching boats in the bay, and they shared information with each other; if one boat spotted a whale, it would immediately notify the others, and nearby boats would rush over to watch. I watched for whales from the deck for the first half of the trip and climbed up to the platform above the bridge for the second half. Once on the high platform, I didn't have to run back and forth between the sides of the boat anymore. After cruising around the bay for about 2 hours, the whale watching activity basically ended, and the boat headed toward the snow-capped mountains for a close-up view of the Víknafjöll mountains. On the way back, we saw signs of whales in the distance again, so the boat immediately turned back to check them out, which shows how dedicated the captain was. Finally, on the return trip, the guide introduced the two types of whales we saw today: humpback whales and minke whales. We returned to the pier at 7:25 PM, ending the 3-hour whale watching trip. Húsavík Church

A reasonably large and well-organized exhibition on Austrian history from 1918 onwards. It delves into the failures of interwar democracy and the struggles between Nazis and Catholic authoritarians, culminating in Austria's annexation into Nazi Germany in 1938—a topic rarely covered in the English-speaking world. The postwar section, focusing on Austria's neutrality and prosperity, is less gripping but provides insightful perspectives on Austrian identity, including efforts to redefine it and confront Austria's historical embrace of the Third Reich. Notable mentions include The Sound of Music, Eurovision, environmental protests, and anti-immigration politics. Although slightly underfunded and housed within the national library—with a more modest setup compared to the Czech Republic's impressive National Museum display on 20th-century history—the exhibit is modern and visually engaging. It will appeal to enthusiasts of European politics and history, offering a stronger focus on political developments rather than social history. However, it falls short in offering merchandise options for visitors.

🇮🇸 ICELAND — The Land of Fire, Ice, and Natural Extremes 🌋❄️ Iceland is a country where the scenery can shift dramatically in just a matter of hours. From volcanoes and lava fields to glaciers, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and coastal fjords. 🌊 To make your trip planning easier, you can divide the country into 6 main zones: 👇 🏙️ 01 Reykjavík & Southwest The capital and its surrounding areas feature city vibes, cozy cafes, hot springs, and volcanic landscapes. This is the perfect starting point for your journey. 🌋 02 Golden Circle The most popular route from Reykjavík, including Þingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss all in one loop. It's easy to navigate and a must for first-time visitors. 🖤 03 South Coast One of the most diverse regions in terms of views, featuring waterfalls, black sand beaches, glaciers, and glacial lagoons. Highlights include Vík and Jökulsárlón. 🏔️ 04 East Iceland A quieter area home to the Eastfjords, coastal mountains, tiny villages, and a rugged, raw natural beauty. 🐋 05 North Iceland Features the city of Akureyri, the volcanic wonders around Lake Mývatn, and Húsavík—one of the top spots for whale watching. 🌊 06 West Iceland & Westfjords Perfect for those wanting to get off the beaten path. Home to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, dramatic cliffs, and serene, stunning fjords. 💡 For First-Timers Starting with Reykjavík → Golden Circle → South Coast is the simplest way to plan. The East, North, and Westfjords are great additions for those wanting to explore Iceland in more depth. Iceland might be small compared to the size of Alaska, but its natural diversity is truly larger than life. 🇮🇸✨

Far in the northeast of Iceland, where the roads become quieter and the landscape becomes wilder, you’ll find Ásbyrgi — one of the most spectacular places in North Iceland. 🏔️🌿 At first glance, it looks almost impossible that this enormous horseshoe-shaped canyon is natural. 🪨 A Canyon Like No Other Ásbyrgi is around 3.5 km long and over 1 km wide, surrounded by enormous cliffs rising up to around 100 metres. Right through the middle stands a huge rock formation called Eyjan — “The Island” — dividing the canyon and creating one of its most recognisable views. 🌊 Carved by Glacial Floods The canyon is part of Jökulsárgljúfur, a spectacular canyon system carved by the powerful glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum. Scientists believe enormous glacial floods helped create the landscape thousands of years ago. Imagine water powerful enough to reshape an entire canyon. 🤯 🐴 But Iceland has another explanation… According to Icelandic mythology, Ásbyrgi was created when Sleipnir, Odin’s eight-legged horse, slammed one of his hooves into the ground. The horseshoe shape? Apparently that’s where the hoof landed. 🐎😂 🌲 A Surprisingly Green Place Despite being surrounded by dramatic cliffs, Ásbyrgi is surprisingly lush. Birch forests, wildflowers and moss cover much of the canyon floor, making it feel almost like a hidden oasis in the middle of North Iceland. 🥾 Explore the Canyon There are several hiking trails ranging from short walks to longer routes through the canyon and surrounding cliffs. For the easiest experience, walk toward Botnstjörn, a small pond surrounded by trees and cliffs. 🌿💧 📍 Ásbyrgi, North Iceland 🏔️ Part of Vatnajökull National Park 🐎 Around 3.5 km long 🪨 Cliffs up to ~100 m 🌊 Created by enormous glacial floods A giant canyon shaped by ice, water… or an eight-legged horse. You decide. 🇮🇸🐎 Original content, created by me. Storm #travel2026

Iceland has Reykjavík and the Golden Circle. But on the north coast lies a town that has become the whale-watching capital of Europe. Húsavík is a small settlement of colorful houses, a wooden church, and a bay that teems with whales. The sea is rich. The light is soft. Here is how to explore this hidden Icelandic gem and save money with Trip.com. 1. The Harbor at Dawn: Boats and Silence Húsavík's harbor is a working port where whale-watching boats rest between journeys. By 9 AM, the tourists arrive. Come at 6 AM instead. The water is glass. The mountains rise across the bay. You will walk along the docks with only the sound of gulls and the creak of ropes. It feels like the Iceland of old. Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline map for Húsavík. It shows you the quietest routes through town and the hidden viewpoints. The best photos are from the hill above the harbor at sunrise, when the colorful houses glow. 2. The Whale Museum: A Story of the Sea Húsavík's Whale Museum tells the story of the whales that live in the bay. The exhibits are excellent. The blue whale skeleton is staggering. The history is fascinating. Come early. The museum is quiet, and the stories are powerful. Money Hack: The museum has a small entrance fee. Buy a combined ticket on Trip.com that includes the museum and a whale-watching tour. You save about 20%. The tours are popular, and booking online guarantees your spot. 3. The Whale Watching: A Meeting With Giants Whale watching in Húsavík is among the best in the world. The boats are quiet. The whales are close. You may see humpbacks, blue whales, and dolphins. The experience is humbling. Come in the morning. The sea is calm, and the light is beautiful. Budget Advice: Skip the expensive private tours. Book a shared whale-watching trip on Trip.com. The prices are lower, and the experience is the same. Some packages include a visit to the puffin island. 4. Food That Tastes Like the Sea Icelandic coastal food is fresh and simple. Try Fish Soup — creamy and rich, with local seafood. Order Fish and Chips — made with the freshest cod. And do not miss Skyr — a thick yogurt-like dairy product, best with berries and cream. Where to Eat: Skip the expensive hotel restaurants. Walk into the town and find Gamli Baukur or Salka, where locals eat. The food is fresh, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a cup of local coffee when you book through the app. Where to Stay? Book on Trip.com a guesthouse in the town. Look for something near the harbor or the church. You will sleep in a cozy room with a view of the bay, the sound of waves at night, and the cry of gulls at dawn. The evenings are quiet, and the northern lights sometimes appear above the mountains. Conclusion: Húsavík is not a place you rush through. It is a place you breathe in. It is a town of whales and water, of wooden churches and colorful houses. It is a place where the sea provides everything. Iceland is a country of dramatic landscapes, but Húsavík is its gentle northern soul. Come and stand at the harbor. The whales are waiting. #trip_com #Iceland #Husavik #husaviktravel #IcelandHiddenGems #WhaleWatching #NorthIceland #BudgetTravel #EuropeGuide #traveliceland #WhaleMuseum #ArcticCircle #NorthernLights #HiddenScandinavia #CoastalCharm

North Iceland hits different, y’all! It’s sooo much more chill than the super touristy south—seriously, this region feels ancient, like it’s got centuries-old vibes. We took an epic road trip up here in September, and let me tell you, the adventure was beyond dreamy. 🚗💨 The weather? Perfection! The roads were wide open and totally stress-free, so you can just cruise and vibe out to your favorite playlist. Early fall colors are unreal in the North—the landscapes go all-out with golden leaves, lava fields, and those iconic volcanic hills. My FujiFilm literally didn’t get a break, every corner was a photo op! 📸🍂 You’ve got spots like Akureyri (the “Capital of North Iceland”), the mighty Goðafoss waterfall (location: Goðafoss, 645, Iceland; open 24/7), and the bubbling geothermal area at Hverir (location: Námaskarð, 660, Iceland; open 24/7—just follow the steamy vents!). And if you’re a fan of chill little villages, don’t miss Húsavík for its coastal charm. Honestly, if you crave wild, untouched views and way fewer IG crowds, the North is calling. I totally recommend everyone to explore this magical side of the island. Northern Iceland is a vibe you NEED to experience at least once! 🌋✨ #iceland #hidden #travel2026 #travel

It was a fabulous experience with these beautiful and majestic gentle giants 😍. The keeper and guides showed so much passion and care. We thoroughly enjoyed the feeding and washing activities—so did the elephants! It was a lovely day overall. We highly recommend paying a visit. Thank you, Soma and the team x

Grandi, located in Reykjavik's Old Harbor, was once a major fishing hub, but has now transformed into a vibrant cultural and museum district. Europe's largest whale museum, Whales of Iceland, is located right here, featuring over 25 life-size whale models accompanied by immersive underwater sound and lighting effects—it's truly breathtaking. However, my go-to spot for watching soccer isn't inside the museum, but rather on the second floor of a nearby cafe housed in a converted old fishing boat. The wooden floors still retain the slight curvature of a ship's cabin, the windows beautifully frame the harbor views, and a large screen hangs among nautical charts and vintage photos. This isn't your typical loud sports bar; it's one of the few quiet spots that broadcast "niche matches"—while everyone else is glued to the heavyweight clashes, this space is reserved for fans who just want to focus on non-mainstream games. For my soccer night, I ordered a latte and a traditional Icelandic kleina (fried pastry). I shared the entire second floor with just one old sea captain. We sat quietly, watching a final group stage match that no one else seemed to care about. When a goal was scored, we just exchanged a glance and gently raised our glasses. Heading downstairs after the game, I was just in time for the museum's movie screening. A soccer match followed by a whale documentary makes for the ultimate weekend luxury in the harbor area. Practical Tips: It's about a 15-minute walk from Reykjavik's Old Harbor. The cafe's hours may vary depending on the match schedule, and it seats about 20 people. For less popular matches, there's no need to arrive too early. I highly recommend trying their smoked salmon sandwich. Before the game, you can check out the whale museum; tickets are around 3,000 ISK, which includes a guided tour and a movie screening.

My football night kicked off in Fredrikstad, the gateway to the Oslofjord—a city boasting the country's oldest brick fortress walls (Gamlebyen)—at the old ferry terminal on the Hvalerferga pier. This wooden waiting hut, where ferries bound for the Hvaler archipelago (Hvalerøyene) once arrived and departed, has now been reborn as a cozy cafe and bar. I settle into a seat on the terrace, my eyes glued to the live stream of the World Cup knockout stage on my tablet. On screen, a fateful Penalty Shootout unfolds—for those few seconds when the entire world holds its breath, the wind sweeping across the fjord and the silhouettes of the islands on the opposite shore (Spjærøy) quietly linger in the background. By the time the referee's whistle blows and cheers erupt, the warm coffee poured by the cafe owner has just gone cold. Caught between the history of the walled city and the tranquility of the open sea islands, I savor the fever of football. This is the Fredrikstad way—a refined, grown-up style of watching the game. [Fredrikstad Hvalerferga Pier Viewing Guide] Location: Just on the edge of Gamlebyen (Old Town), where the Glomma River meets the fjord. The wooden deck of "Hvalerferga Kafé" is your landmark. Access: About a 1-hour and 15-minute train ride from Oslo S. A 10-minute walk from Fredrikstad Station to the Old Town (Gamlebyen), and the pier is right past it. Food & Drink: Order the house-roasted coffee (hot wine/Gløgg in winter) and a traditional Norwegian "Skillingsboller" (cinnamon roll). Beer is also available. Broadcast: All matches are broadcast for free on NRK1/TV 2. For major matches that might end in a penalty shootout, be sure to claim a deck seat early (seating is limited). What to bring: A waterproof jacket (the fjord winds can be chilly) and a power bank. Under the summer midnight sun, it stays beautifully bright and magical well past 10:00 PM. Side note: If you visit the "Gamlebyen Stadion" (home of FK Fredrikstad) on the same day, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for Norwegian football culture. Island silhouettes, the sound of crashing waves, and the referee's whistle—my football night is forever etched into my memory, along with the woody scent of this pier.

Húsavík instantly stole my heart with its calm harbor, colorful boats, and charming Nordic vibe. Known as the Whale Watching Capital of Iceland, this small coastal town feels peaceful yet full of life. Walking along the marina, you’ll spot traditional wooden ships gently rocking on crystal-clear waters, with snow-dusted mountains and dramatic skies as the backdrop. One of the highlights is the iconic Húsavík Church, standing proudly near the harbor. Its white-and-red wooden exterior is simple yet photogenic, perfectly blending with the town’s relaxed atmosphere. Nearby, whale-themed sculptures and eco-friendly whale-watching centers reflect how deeply marine life is woven into local culture. Even without heading out to sea, Húsavík feels special. The fresh ocean air, friendly pace, and postcard-worthy views make it a lovely stop on a North Iceland road trip. It’s a place to slow down, enjoy the scenery, and soak in Iceland’s coastal charm—whether you’re here for whales, photography, or just a quiet moment by the sea. A short visit is enough to fall in love, but staying longer lets you truly appreciate Húsavík’s gentle rhythm and Arctic beauty. #Husavik #WhaleWatchingCapital #NorthIceland #travelfreak

#hellohalloween Husavik completely won my heart. This cozy little town by the bay in the Northeastern Region of Iceland feels like something out of a dream. I joined a whale watching tour, and honestly, it was unreal! The moment those massive whales surfaced near the boat, I couldn’t stop smiling. The air was fresh and cold, but the excitement made me forget everything else. The harbor area is adorable, with colorful houses and cafes serving the best hot chocolate ever. I also checked out the Whale Museum, which gave me a whole new appreciation for these gentle giants. Everything in Husavik just feels peaceful and friendly. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and nature takes center stage in the most magical way possible.

#hellohalloween Selfoss Waterfall in Northern Iceland is a wide and elegant cascade that flows gently yet powerfully along the Jökulsá á Fjöllum River. The waterfall stretches across the river, creating a broad curtain of water that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding rugged volcanic terrain. Visiting Selfoss is easy, with well marked paths and viewpoints that allow you to admire the falls from different angles. The area is peaceful and less crowded than other Icelandic waterfalls, making it perfect for quiet reflection or photography. Nearby trails connect to Dettifoss, one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls, so a visit to Selfoss can easily be part of a larger adventure. Its serene yet commanding presence captures the essence of Iceland’s natural beauty, offering a memorable stop in the North.

Ásbyrgi Canyon, located in the northeast of Iceland The valley is surrounded by horseshoe-shaped cliffs, said to have been created by the divine horse of the god, and is covered in autumn leaves during Iceland's short autumn. And in this valley, where Norse mythology sleeps, a beautiful jewel-like pond sits quietly hidden in the forest. The cliffs are about 100m high, and you can climb up to the middle. Iceland is often thought of as being closed off by green grass in spring and summer and long snow, but like Hokkaido, a short autumn comes and the land is covered in vivid orange and yellow, and you can enjoy a spectacular view of autumn leaves that is different from Japan. This is called Ásbyrgi Canyon, located in the north of Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland, surrounded by 100 metre-high cliffs in a horseshoe shape with a Scandinavian myth. The fall of Iceland is very short time like Hokkaido of Japan. We can see a breathtaking autumn leaves during September. #tripoverseastravel #iceland #autumnleaves #spectacularview

#EuropeanTravel Visiting Detebos Falls in Iceland was a magical experience in the heart of wild nature. The waterfall is considered one of the most famous and largest waterfalls in Europe, the sound was clear and I was standing near it. The constantly flowing water formed a beautiful frontal view, and a light mist flooded the place. The surrounding landscape was breathtaking, the black rocks and wild plants added a unique beauty to the place. I took a moment to enjoy the silence and natural beauty of this place, making this visit an unforgettable experience combining the tranquility and grandeur of nature.

Self-driving tour in northern Iceland, you can soak in the hot springs while watching whales, and you can also overlook the snow-capped mountains in the distance. However, I have to especially complain that gas in Iceland is really expensive #100 Ways to Travel

#familytrips2024 This was a memorable experience and this video captures exciting moment of us leaving out to the sea to hunt for whale!

Witnessing whales for the first time was an unforgettable experience. Thanks to the incredible excursion with @getyourguide, the Icelandic fjords offered a breathtaking encounter with these magnificent creatures. It's an adventure you simply can't miss! I can still hear their songs in my head and feel the waves beneath me. The majesty of these creatures left us in awe as their massive bodies moved gracefully through the water. I felt so tiny next to them but also filled with wonder at their gentle presence. Such a privileged and unique moment. 🐳🌊😍🙌
