The six-day trip from Fez to Marrakesh was truly unforgettable. On the first day, exploring the Medina of Fez with local guides felt like stepping back in time. The next day, I enjoyed seeing monkeys in Ifrane (referred to as the Switzerland of Morocco) and strolling through the Cedar Forest. My favorite part was the Merzouga desert. Watching the sunset during a camel ride and spending the night in a luxury desert camp was undoubtedly the highlight of the journey. After that, I was deeply impressed by Tudra Gorge, the Dades Valley, and the Ait Ben Haddou Casbah. Both the driver and the guide were extremely professional throughout. Everything was perfectly organized. In short, if you want to truly experience Morocco, this tour is essential!

We had an incredible and seamless trip to Morocco, thanks to Moha and Hassan from Moroccan Berber Roaming! From the moment they picked us up at the airport in Essaouira to our final drop-off in Tangier, everything in between was absolutely perfect. Before we even arrived, they guided me in crafting the perfect 8-day itinerary for myself and my 13-year-old daughter. They pointed us toward the best options—stunning riads and unforgettable experiences. Our journey was filled with amazing highlights. We explored bustling medinas, ancient kasbahs, and the awe-inspiring Todra Gorges. We drove through four majestic mountain ranges, spotting traditional Berber camps, as well as herds of goats and camels. A surprising treat was seeing monkeys in Ifrane! The standout experience, without a doubt, was camel trekking to a Sahara desert camp—pure magic. Moha was an extraordinary driver and host. He went the extra mile to arrange local guides and short tours—like an engaging history lesson in Fes—that were perfectly tailored in depth and duration for my daughter. Every moment was a blend of rich history and Berber culture, making the trip educational and incredibly enjoyable. Nothing felt like too much trouble for Moha, who was warm, charming, and made us feel safe and completely at home from the start. Morocco amazed and delighted us at every turn. We returned with full hearts and can’t recommend Hassan, Moha, and Moroccan Berber Roaming highly enough!

Ifrane is a mountain town located in the Atlas Mountains of central Morocco at an altitude of approximately 1,650 meters. With a permanent population of just over 10,000, it is known as "Little Switzerland" due to its streets lined with European-style peaked wooden houses, green lawns, and crisp, fresh air. Its aesthetic is completely different from the typical desert cities of Morocco, resembling a European town that has suddenly appeared in Africa. Founded in 1929, the town was originally a resort planned and built by the French during the colonial period. The architecture features Alpine-style sloping roofs, small balconies, and stone walls. The "Stone Lion" in the town center is the most famous photo spot. It is said to have been carved by prisoners of war during World War II to commemorate the extinct Atlas lion, and it has since become the town's iconic landmark. In the local Berber language, "Ifrane" means "caves." It is one of the few places in Morocco that sees snow in the winter, making it a popular skiing destination, while its cool and pleasant summers have long made it a favorite retreat for escaping the heat. The town is compact, with restaurants, a post office, and a central garden concentrated in the downtown area. In 2013, it was ranked as the second cleanest city in the world, and the streets are indeed remarkably tidy.

The legendary Rick’s Café from the 1942 classic film "Casablanca" finally became a reality and gained fame on March 1, 2004, stepping out of the cinematic dream. Sanmao’s "Stories of the Sahara," written in 1976, imbued this desert with endless romantic imagination. Years later, following this connection to light, shadow, and literature, a dazzling loop tour of Morocco begins. Stop 1: Marrakech – The Red City Marrakech, the imperial Red City, unveils the epic prologue of Morocco’s splendor with the bustle of its sleepless square and the weight of its ochre-red ancient architecture. The Majorelle Garden builds its visual core with the iconic Majorelle blue, blending diverse exotic vegetation and cross-regional artistic styles. Founded by Jacques Majorelle and later restored and passed down by Yves Saint Laurent, it carries the legacy of two generations of creators. The Koutoubia Mosque is a landmark of the old city of Marrakech and a classic symbol of the fusion of Almohad dynasty royal power and Islamic faith. Built in the 12th century, the current structure is the second main mosque rebuilt in 1158. Its towering minaret strictly defines the old city skyline, while only the foundation of the original ancient temple remains, serving as an important physical remnant for studying medieval Maghreb Islamic architecture. The Bahia Palace, built in the mid-to-late 19th century by a high-ranking official of the Alaouite dynasty over several decades, is a well-preserved aristocratic residence in Marrakech. It concentrates on displaying traditional Moroccan local crafts such as mosaics and wood carvings, and is also an important physical carrier for studying the social landscape of the late Moroccan dynasty and Islamic courtyard construction aesthetics. The Jemaa el-Fnaa square, formed in the 11th century, serves as a world-class living intangible cultural heritage space, continuing generations of street performances and bustling markets, precipitating the vivid vitality of the ancient city that never sleeps. Stop 2: Ouarzazate – The Gateway to the Desert Ouarzazate is known as the "Gateway to the Desert" and the "Hollywood of Africa." After crossing the rugged Atlas Mountains, this is an important stop before entering the heart of the Sahara Desert. The landscape transitions from mountains to a mix of desert and oasis, writing the desolation and legend of North Africa with sand-filled skies and cinematic art. The World Heritage site of Aït Benhaddou, built in the 11th century, is a well-preserved Berber fortified village built entirely of red earth and mud bricks, serving as a model of North African red earth architecture. Its winding streets still retain the ancient traces of Berber life, and its simple, magnificent, and primitive style has made it a filming location for many epic blockbusters such as "Game of Thrones," "Gladiator," and "The Mummy." The Atlas Film Studios, one of the largest in the world, is open to visitors with a ticket. The studio area retains a large number of real-life props such as pharaoh tombs, ancient Roman arenas, and medieval castles, resembling an immersive open-air film museum. Stop 3: Merzouga – The Heart of the Sahara Merzouga is the concrete carrier of the Sahara stories of Sanmao and José, carrying the nostalgia of a past life written by Sanmao, and is also the "poetry and distance" that people yearn for freedom. This land possesses the magnificent Erg Chebbi shifting sand dunes of Morocco. The sand color changes with the sunlight, spreading clear golden yellow during the day, tinged with warm red-orange at dusk, and settling into a quiet deep purple at night. With its ultimate twilight and starry sky scenery, it is crowned by many travelers as the premier destination for sunsets and stargazing in Morocco. Stepping into the reception station on the edge of Merzouga, the fantasy journey exclusive to the Sahara officially begins. Luggage is transported by desert camp off-road vehicles to the luxury tent hotel. Visitors switch to camels and follow the camel caravan slowly deep into the boundless golden sand dunes, waiting for the sunset to dye the entire Sahara Desert a rich crimson. As twilight deepens, the caravan reaches the desert camp with flickering lights. Warm mint tea and an exquisite tagine dinner gently welcome guests from all over. As night falls, everyone sits around the campfire, listening to the Berber hand drums playing the simple and distant African rhythms. Looking up, the sky is filled with a brilliant galaxy, vast and romantic, living up to the magnificent desert scenery. "Every time I think of you, a grain of sand falls from the sky, and thus the Sahara was formed." Stop 4: Fes – The Yellow City Bidding farewell to the Sahara, we head to the ancient city of Fes, which has sealed away a thousand years of time. Passing through the town of Ifrane, known as "Little Switzerland of Morocco," the town is at an altitude of 1,600 meters and was planned and built by the French along the mountain in 1930. The town center square is full of French-style open-air cafes. Sitting down for an espresso feels like being in a European town. The iconic "Ifrane Stone Lion" in the town was hand-carved by German soldiers during World War II to commemorate the Atlas lion, which once inhabited the Atlas Mountains and is now extinct. The outer walls, ancient buildings, and residences of the old city of Fes are all built from local yellow earth and clay sand, reflecting a warm, golden-yellow tone under the scorching North African sun. It is also the largest car-free old city in the world. The journey begins at the magnificent gate of the Royal Palace of Fes. The giant hand-forged bronze gate, set against golden mosaic tiles, fully displays royal majesty. Then, dive into the 9,000 winding labyrinthine alleys to slowly unveil the mysterious veil of the old city. Deep in the alleys, you will find the University of Al Quaraouiyine, certified by the Guinness World Records as the oldest university in the world. It is integrated with the Al Quaraouiyine Mosque. Due to religious regulations, non-Muslims can only stop outside the school gate to take a precious silhouette of the exquisite courtyard, but it still makes people awe-struck by this source of Islamic civilization that produced Christian popes and Jewish philosophers. Climbing to the rooftop of the old city to overlook the colorful palette of the leather tannery, even if you press the green mint leaves given by the shopkeeper tightly to your nose, you cannot cover up the pungent smell that has been passed down for thousands of years. But this is the most real and unforgettable Fes experience, traveling back to that dreamy Arabian Nights in the Middle Ages.

Our 5-day journey from Marrakech to Fes via Merzouga was truly unforgettable. We traveled through the High Atlas Mountains, visited Ait Ben Haddou and the stunning Dades Valley, explored Todra Gorge, and finally arrived at the golden dunes of Merzouga. The highlight was certainly the Sahara experience—riding camels at sunset, stargazing, and spending the night in a desert camp. The journey through the Ziz Valley, Middle Atlas, and Ifrane on the way to Fes was equally beautiful. Everything was well-organized, comfortable, and enjoyable from beginning to end. Our driver was friendly, professional, and made the long drives pleasant with plenty of stops for photos and sightseeing. We highly recommend this 5-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour to anyone looking to experience the best of Morocco in an incredible trip!

We just finished our tour through Morocco (Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Meknes, Ifrane, Casablanca). It was an amazing experience! The itinerary was well-balanced between travel time, sightseeing, and free time. We chose to stay in Riads to fully embrace the local culture. Each one was carefully selected: clean rooms, comfortable beds, and staff always ready to assist with any need. Our guide, Youssef, was professional, friendly, and passionate about his country, making our experience truly enjoyable.

12 days exploring Morocco as a family: mom, dad, and their 13-year-old daughter. Antonella customized a tour tailored to our needs and preferences, allowing us to experience the diverse beauty of this wonderful country. From Marrakech to Casablanca and Rabat, Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes, Ouarzazate, the Todra Gorges, Ifrane, Merzouga and the desert, the Ziz Pass, and the Ouzoud Waterfalls, every destination had its charm. For transport, we were accompanied by Hamid, an expert and punctual driver who was flexible enough to make slight detours. One such detour gave us the chance to visit the UNESCO Geopark Museum in Azilal—an impressive museum dedicated to the geology of the High Atlas, featuring a well-structured display, including dinosaur skeleton replicas, and currently undergoing expansion. During the long drives, it was a pleasure conversing with Hamid in excellent Italian about his country's customs and fascinating tidbits. A tip for the Ouzoud Waterfalls: skip the local guides offering to accompany you along the trail. The looped paths are well-marked, and exploring on your own allows you the freedom to have a meal while enjoying the stunning lower cascade view, rather than in the upper area. If you do dine at the top, try the pizza from the last kiosk on the left as you ascend the trail—it’s a delicious change from the 12 days of tajine, with great dough and toppings, and the burgers are worth a mention too!
