If you're craving volcanoes, small onsen towns, gorges, and islands, here is where I'd look. NORTH AND CENTER 1. Arita + Imari • Saga Why go: to experience Japan's ceramic heartland, rather than just another tourist trap. Arita is considered one of Japan's premier hubs for porcelain. Its local production history spans over 400 years. Nearby is Imari, historically tied to exporting these ceramics through its port. In Arita, the fun isn't in rushing between landmarks, but in popping into workshops and shops, admiring the old architecture, and discovering why local ceramics became famous far beyond Japan. Don't miss: Arita → pottery workshops → Okawachiyama. ⸻ 2. Kurokawa Onsen • Kumamoto If you want an authentic onsen experience, I wouldn't stop at just Beppu. Nestled in the mountains, Kurokawa looks completely different: a small resort town, a river, wooden ryokans, and dozens of open-air baths. The main local draw is the Nyuyoku Tegata (bathing pass). It's a wooden pass that lets you hop between several rotenburo (open-air baths) at different ryokans. I'd highly recommend staying overnight here; otherwise, it defeats half the purpose. Who it's for: ryokan + onsen + slow travel vibes. ⸻ 3. Takachiho • Miyazaki One of those spots worth tweaking your entire itinerary for. The highlight is Takachiho Gorge, a narrow volcanic ravine with sheer basalt walls and the stunning Manai Waterfall. You can stroll along the gorge on foot or, when conditions allow, rent a rowboat. But Takachiho isn't just about nature. The area is deeply rooted in Japanese mythology, and in the evening, you can catch traditional Takachiho Yokagura performances. How long to stay: at least one full day, preferably overnight. ⸻ 4. Aso + Kusasenri • Kumamoto The Aso caldera is so massive that treating it as a single attraction feels a bit weird. It features the active Nakadake volcanic zone, the vast grassy plains of Kusasenri, epic viewpoints, and scenic drives through mountain landscapes. Crater access can be restricted due to volcanic activity and gas levels, so always check the status right before you go. Central Kyushu: Kurokawa → onsens Aso → volcanoes Takachiho → gorge + mythology That right there is a solid multi-day itinerary. THE SOUTH AND ISLANDS 5. Kirishima • Kagoshima / Miyazaki Why go: for volcanic mountainscapes instead of cityscapes. Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park features volcanic landscapes, crater lakes, hot springs, and hiking trails. Here you can mix hiking with a rewarding onsen soak, and top it off with Kirishima Jingu, one of the region's premier shrines. I'd dedicate a full day to Kirishima, or even better, an overnight stay. ⸻ 6. Ibusuki • Kagoshima An onsen where they don't just soak you in hot water. Ibusuki is famous for its sunamushi onsen: you lie down in a yukata and get buried almost entirely in geothermally heated sand. It looks a little bizarre, which is exactly why it's so memorable. But sand baths aren't the only reason to add Ibusuki to your list. It's a great base for exploring the southern part of the Satsuma Peninsula. You can combine: Ibusuki → Lake Ikeda → Cape Nagasakibana. ⸻ 7. Yakushima • Kagoshima Now, this is definitely not a day trip. Located south of the Kyushu mainland, Yakushima is blanketed in mountainous forests. Parts of the island are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its most iconic landscapes revolve around ancient Japanese cedars called yakusugi. The Jomon Sugi is a living symbol of the island. But Yakushima requires time, solid planning, and rain gear: the island is notorious for its extremely wet climate. How long to stay: I'd budget a minimum of 2–3 nights. ⸻ HOW TO PIECE TOGETHER YOUR OFF-THE-BEATEN-PATH KYUSHU Don't try to cram all seven spots into one week. Kyushu looks way more compact on a map than it feels on the road. Ceramics and small towns: Arita → Imari The ultimate starter route through inland Kyushu: Aso → Kurokawa Onsen → Takachiho Volcanoes and southern onsens: Kagoshima → Kirishima → Ibusuki A standalone trip: Yakushima IF YOU ONLY PICK THREE 🌋 Aso → for the sheer scale ♨️ Kurokawa Onsen → for the vibes 🌿 Takachiho → for the nature and culture And I wouldn't even try to "squeeze" Yakushima into a standard Kyushu itinerary. It deserves a few dedicated days of its own. In this sense, Kyushu is a far cry from the classic Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka route. Here, it's less about the number of cities you check off and more about the journey between them: volcano → tiny onsen town → gorge → ocean → island. And the further you venture from the major shinkansen stations, the more fascinating the trip becomes.

🏯 Day 3 | Slow life in Tangjin, enjoy local beautiful sashimi Wagyu beef Leaving the outlying islands, we came to Karatsu and stayed at the “Hotel Yukicho Grand Besse” near Karatsu Station. The biggest reason to choose this one - the room has an open kitchen and cooking stove, which is a treasure for gourmets. Put down your luggage and immediately go to the local supermarket A Coop. The local sashimi, premium wagyu beef and seasonal fruits and vegetables are incredibly cost-effective. Frying a piece of snowflake wagyu beef and cutting a plate of fresh and sweet sashimi in a foreign kitchen is the most unforgettable feeling of life. Unfortunately, it was raining that day, so I had to give up the bus trip and hike to Tangtsu Castle. The city tower stands on the seaside high ground, and there is a tranquility in the gray mist. Looking at the rainbow pine plains in the distance, a dark green pine forest stretches along the coast, and the atmosphere remains. 📝 Tip: If the weather is good and you have time, I sincerely recommend taking the bus to Huzi to eat the live squid sashimi freshly cooked in the morning market, and then go to Rainbow Matsuhara for a walk to absorb badolin. 🛍️ Day 4 | Switch to Sasebo, walk in the shopping street until your feet are weak, add the Imari River tour in the middle Then take the train and transfer to Sasebo Station. Sasebo is most famous for its super long covered shopping street, where you can buy everything from the beginning to the end - medicines, clothing, souvenirs, groceries, restaurants, so you don't have to stay wet on rainy days. Restocking, shopping for cosmetics, and finding food are all done all at once. I can't feel bored after walking all afternoon. If you take the JR, change trains in the middle of Imari, you can also go see the Saga Bank chronograph clock that plays different music every time and purchase the famous Arita ceramics. ⛴️ Day 5 | Ninety-nine island cruise, the stunning scenery under the clouds The highlight is on day five. We bought the "Ninety-nine Island Cruise Boat + Aquarium + Zoo and Botanical Garden" package on trip.com in advance. It's cheaper than buying separately. The cruise alone is worth the fare. Ninety-nine Island consists of 208 large and small islands. The cruise ship slowly sails out of the inland sea. It is dotted with green islands on both sides, large and small like pearls sprinkled on the sea. The sea is calm as a mirror. Although it was cloudy that day, it was more comfortable without the bright sunshine. The cool breeze was refreshing, and even the sky was covered with a soft gray blue, which was particularly artistic. Standing on the deck and watching one island after another slowly pass by, one can't help but wonder: how can this picture be so beautiful. The aquarium "Hai きらら" is right next door, just a few steps away, so it's convenient to fit in the package. However, to be honest, it is not good value for money if you just go there specifically - the pavilion is small and there are no large marine life, which is just right as a stop by after a cruise. 🦪 15 minutes walk | Grilled oysters all-you-can-eat, fresh to melt After seeing the cruise ship and the aquarium, you can reach "Kyujimoto Kansai" for grilled oyster all-you-can-eat within a 15-minute walk. 1500 yen per person all you can eat, want to open an extra stove add 550 yen. The freshly grilled oysters are put on the stove, and the shells are smoking when they are opened. The oysters are full and plump, the salty freshness of the sea water hits the sweetness of the oysters themselves. One after another, I can't stop eating. They are cheap and delicious but also addictive to eat. They are definitely human delicacies. 🐧 Last stop | Ninety-nine Island Zoo and Botanical Garden, healing small animals It's only a 5-minute taxi ride from Kansai Honzo to the Kujikushima Zoological and Botanical Gardens (Mori きらら). The penguin pavilion in the park is the focal point, with a large group of penguins shuttling in the water and swaying left and right on the shore, which is meltingly cute; and furry little bears lazily sunbathing in the trees, which is super healing. Paired with four-season flowers and a botanical garden, it’s perfect for families or couples to put a warm end to the journey. Enjoy fresh food by cooking in Tangzu, go shopping in Sasebo, and eat grilled oysters with a view of the Ninety-Nine Islands - these three days, from slow life to all-you-can-eat, each day has its own surprises. Parking details, etc. Tips for your visit⚠️ Basically, getting around by car🚗 or taxi is your best bet! ① Okawachiyama Townscape (Imari City) · No need to worry about parking, as there are two large lots. · Since it's in the mountains, expect the blooms to peak about 1-2 days after Imari City's forecast. ◯ ② Jissoin Temple (Imari City) · There's a parking area just before you reach the temple grounds, along with a 100-meter uphill walk. · There's also space for about 3 cars inside the grounds, so driving all the way up is highly recommended if you have mobility issues. ③ Mifuneyama Rakuen (Takeo City) · Plenty of parking available, so no worries there. · Be sure to check the specific blooming forecast for this famous spot. · Admission fee: 600 yen (Adults). · Note that separate admission fees apply if you plan to attend both the day and night viewings. ④ Ennoji Temple (Takeo City) · After driving up the cherry tree-lined path, there's space for about 10 cars just before the temple entrance. ⑤ MR Uranosaki Station (Imari City) · You can park about 10 cars at the station's roundabout or on the side streets. · Trains run about twice an hour, and parking gets tight right before a train arrives. · In a pinch, you can park at the convenience store across the street. (But make sure to actually buy something if you park there for a bit!) Bonus ① Sueyama Shrine (Arita Town) · There is parking on the shrine grounds, but the road getting there is quite narrow. If you have a larger vehicle, it's better to use the free tourist parking lot just before the shrine. Bonus ② Porcelain Park (Arita Town) · Keep an eye on the schedule, as it can get crowded on weekends due to dog run events or bazaars. (It's much quieter and more relaxing on weekdays and non-event days!) Spot ③ is relatively well-known and attracts foreign tourists, but the rest are local, off-the-beaten-path photo spots frequented mostly by locals!✨ At spot ⑤, the crowd swells when the train comes, but clears out immediately after it passes, making it much easier to enjoy! We had an unforgettable lunch at Happiness Village Yakiniku Shop in Imari, Saga—and it was one of the best meals of our trip. Parking was super convenient with spaces right outside the restaurant, which made things easy from the start. We came specifically for the Imari beef, and it truly lived up to the hype. The quality of the beef was superb—tender, juicy, and rich with perfectly marbled fat that melted beautifully on the grill. Every bite was packed with flavor, and it honestly felt like a luxury meal at a surprisingly reasonable price. We went with the lunch sets, which were generous and came with a good mix of premium cuts. Best place to visit in Saga prefecture. I went here on weekend but there are not so many people around, and i walk around and buy a lot of souvenirs, there are soo many cute Cutlery that made in Arita. Actually there are many shops that provide to experiencing making the cutlery, etc.. but i wasnt have much time when i visit here so i cant do that which i was kinda regret.
