I recommend leaving at least an hour for swimming and relaxing by the sea. If your return boat leaves from Casamicciola, it is convenient to finish your day at one of the beaches nearby. This way, you won’t have to cross the entire island again before departure. ⛴️ Why travel from Pozzuoli? Pozzuoli is a particularly convenient starting point if you’re staying in the Phlegraean Fields area. The crossing is relatively short, and tickets to Ischia can start from just €5 each way. For a simple one-day itinerary: Pozzuoli → Casamicciola → explore Ischia by bus → Sant’Angelo → beach → Casamicciola → Pozzuoli. No car and no expensive organized tour are necessary — Ischia is surprisingly easy to explore independently, even on a small budget. 🌊

Ischia is a lush volcanic island not far away from Naples. It has hot springs, amazing views and medieval castle. Compared to Capri, the island is bigger in size and also less crowded. It certainly deserves a day or two in your itinerary when in Naples. Fret not if you don’t prefer to rent a scooter here because the public transport (bus) is efficient and easy to understand. The buses either run clock-wise or counter-clockwise. Just pick where you want to go and hop on. It is a paradise for everyone. #summerbeachnights Before you read do Follow me, so I can add value for your future travels Here is how I Did it - I flew from London to Naples, made Naples my base, and visited Capri and Ischia by ferry. And genuinely? I would do it this way again. I found a cheap stay/Airbnb in Naples, which meant I could wake up in one of Italy’s most chaotic, colourful and food-obsessed cities, have a proper Neapolitan coffee in the morning, and then simply walk down towards the port and jump on a ferry. ⛴️ First stop: CAPRI 🍋💙 The moment you arrive, you understand the hype. Blue water, dramatic cliffs, little streets climbing into the hills and those postcard views everywhere you turn. But here is the important part: I didn’t need a Capri hotel to experience Capri. I went over for the day, explored the island, enjoyed the views and that beautiful Capri summer atmosphere, then caught the ferry back to Naples. No £500-a-night room required. 😅 Then I did ISCHIA 🌋🌊 This one surprised me even more. Ischia has a completely different energy from Capri. It felt greener, more relaxed and less about being seen. Beaches, thermal-island vibes, colourful Italian streets and gorgeous views, exactly the kind of place where you suddenly start wondering why you don’t live in Italy. Again, I enjoyed the island during the day and simply returned to my inexpensive Naples base afterwards. And Naples itself wasn’t just somewhere I slept. That would be a huge mistake. I wandered through the narrow streets, ate ridiculously good pizza, grabbed pastries and espresso, watched scooters somehow squeeze through spaces that shouldn’t physically be possible 😂 and spent evenings just enjoying the atmosphere. 🍕 FOOD TIP: Naples is one city where eating extremely well doesn’t have to destroy your budget. If you’re planning a similar trip, look around the historic centre for traditional trattorias and pizzerias rather than automatically eating beside the biggest tourist sights. One place worth putting on your list is La Locanda Gesù Vecchio for proper Neapolitan cooking. My favourite part was that this trip felt expensive without actually being expensive. ✈️ London → Naples 🏠 Budget hotel/Airbnb in Naples ⛴️ Naples → Capri → Naples ⛴️ Naples → Ischia → Naples 🍕 Proper Neapolitan food ☕ Far too many Italian coffees 🌊 Two incredible islands 💰 My trip: under £400 Obviously prices change depending on flights, dates and how early you book, but the strategy is the important part. Don’t automatically stay where everyone tells you to stay. In peak summer, Capri and Ischia accommodation can become seriously expensive. Staying in Naples gave me the best of both worlds: Naples at night, the islands during the day, and hundreds of pounds left in my pocket. #sunsetplaces Pozzuoli is a seaside town just outside Naples where you can easily combine ancient history, beach time, great local food, and trips to the islands of Ischia and Procida. Just before my visit, two earthquakes occurred in the area. Despite the situation, I decided to continue with my plans and travel to Pozzuoli — and discovered a place that deserves much more attention from visitors to Campania. 🏛️ Ancient Pozzuoli The town has an impressive history dating back to Greek and Roman times. One of its highlights is the Flavian Amphitheatre, the third-largest Roman amphitheatre in Italy. Its underground passages are particularly fascinating and give you an idea of what happened behind the scenes of ancient spectacles. Another must-see is the Macellum of Pozzuoli, traditionally known as the Temple of Serapis. The ruins of this ancient Roman market are also an important symbol of the volcanic activity of the Phlegraean Fields. The historic center and waterfront are perfect for simply wandering around, especially in the evening. 🏖️ Beaches and islands Pozzuoli is also a convenient base for a seaside holiday. There are plenty of beaches and beach clubs around the town and along the coast towards Baia. From the port, you can take boats and ferries to Ischia and Procida, making Pozzuoli an excellent alternative to staying in central Naples if you want to explore the islands. 🚌 Getting around is quite easy. Bus No. 101 runs regularly and connects Pozzuoli with other places along the coast, including Baia. 🍝 And, of course, there is food. Pozzuoli has plenty of restaurants serving local Campanian cuisine and fresh seafood. The waterfront is especially lively in the evening. 🌅 But there is one more reason I would return to Pozzuoli: the sunsets. Come to the port before sunset and simply stay there for a while. As the sun slowly disappears over the Bay of Pozzuoli, the sky turns gold, orange, pink and violet. Boats become dark silhouettes against the glowing horizon, while the lights of the waterfront gradually appear behind you. Every evening the colors are different. Some places impress you with museums or famous monuments. Pozzuoli stays in your memory because of the light. And watching the sun disappear into the sea from the port was one of those simple travel moments when you don’t need to go anywhere or do anything else. Just watch. 🌅

This isn’t your basic boat ride—climb down into the lower cabin and you’re surrounded by giant windows that give you a front-row show to the city that’s been chilling underwater since Roman times. Capri is everything I imagined a beautiful seaside town in Southern Italy could be. My family and I have been coming back to this hotel since the 90s. Though the hotel has undergone many changes over the years, the warmth of the staff has always been a constant. Forget about the Amalfi Coast or Capri, unfortunately nowadays overcrowded and expensive. Just off the coast of Naples, an hour away via fast ferry, you will find Ischia.
