2026 Spring Lupine Festival: A Sea of Flowers in Tochigi Prefecture
The Spring Yushan Lupine Festival is held annually from early April to early May at the Kanuma City Flower and Tree Center in Tochigi Prefecture. The event showcases about 30,000 lupine plants, a species native to the western United States, which have been cultivated at the center for the past seven years. Typically, Japan's traditional spring flower season features cherry blossoms, tulips, and wisteria, but this festival offers visitors the chance to experience vibrant seasonal flowers, adding a unique splash of color to the flower season. Admission is free for children up to junior high school age, making it perfect for family outings. The festival environment is relaxed and colorful, ideal for those seeking to enjoy nature, take photos, or unwind among the flowers. The Kanuma City Flower and Tree Center is accessible by car and is just over a 10-minute drive from JR Nikko Line Kanuma Station. We encourage visitors to explore this seasonal event and appreciate the beauty of blooming lupines.

Furumine Shrine
We went to the famous power spot, "Komine Shrine"!
It is said to be a god of good fortune, disaster prevention, and wish fulfillment, such as household safety, fire prevention, business prosperity, road safety, recovery from illness, and physical health.
Parking is also available!
We visited during the autumn foliage season, and the grounds were very colorful with shades of red, yellow, and orange!
It seems like it can be enjoyed any time of the year! ⭐️🤍
But maybe the autumn foliage season is the best?

Enjoy some Aburimochi rice cakes while taking in the view of Imamiya Shrine.
Speaking of Imamiya Shrine, it's Aburimochi (a type of rice cake).
Kazariya here is a shop with over 100 years of history.
It's packed with customers on weekends, but relatively quiet on weekdays.
When you order Aburimochi, you can also get some cold tea with it, which is nice.
It was a blissful moment while looking out at Imamiya Shrine.

Day 1: Eat at several gyoza restaurants inside Utsunomiya Station🥟
Day 2: Strawberry Picking in Kanuma🍓
🏨 Accommodation: Richmond Hotel
🍴 Food Spots
📌 Useful Information
There are many strawberry picking spots in Tochigi Prefecture, so it's best to search, read reviews, and make a reservation before you go.
By the way, I made a reservation at Berry-chan House🍓 in Kanuma. It was an all-you-can-eat buffet of three varieties of strawberries: Tochiotome, Tochiaika, Tochihime, and Nonbiri. Varieties and prices likely vary depending on the season.

Recommended accommodations for your trip to Tochigi!
During my recent trip to Tochigi, I stayed at a guesthouse called 'Center.'
Although it's a guesthouse, it offers only three private rooms, making it a small and cozy place to stay.
I chose this place because I loved the atmosphere of the rooms.
There's a kitchen available, so you can cook food you buy from the supermarket! It’s convenient as it’s equipped with pots, pans, dishes, and cutlery. ☺️
There are two shower rooms, one of which is exclusively for women!
The parking lot has space for three cars. If you contact them in advance, they’ll provide directions.

Kokufu Shrine in Tochigi Prefecture
Located in Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture, Kokufu Shrine⛩️
◯ Kokufu Shrine ◯
The shrine is filled with many Tengu (goblin-like deities) enshrined within.
For some reason, I couldn't stop yawning while I was there 🥱.
There are many types of handwritten Goshuin (shrine stamps) available, and you can choose your favorite.
The Kokufuen garden is rich in nature and very soothing. The teahouse inside has a traditional atmosphere that made my heart flutter. The taste was also delicious and absolutely wonderful.
Address: 〒322-0101

Personally, I like this shrine, but if you're not a fan of Tengu, it might be better to avoid it.

A Hidden Garden Gem in Tochigi 🍁✨
#hellohalloween
If you’re visiting Tochigi during autumn and looking for a quiet, picturesque spot, Kikusui-en Garden in Kanuma is a peaceful retreat right in the city.
Known as one of Kanuma’s “Three Famous Gardens,” Kikusui-en is a compact yet beautiful Japanese garden that’s free to enter. While it may not be large, it offers a lovely mix of seasonal charm—especially during the fall foliage season when the garden lights up (literally!) with nighttime illuminations.
During our visit, the maple leaves had turned vibrant red while golden ginkgo leaves added a warm contrast. The view was breathtaking, especially as the sun filtered through the colorful canopy.
Perfect for a peaceful stroll, photo opportunities, or just a moment of seasonal calm in the heart of the city.

A Sacred Spot Wrapped in Autumn Colors
#hellohalloween
In the mountains of Kanuma, Tochigi, you’ll find Furumine Shrine (古峯神社)—a powerful spiritual site dedicated to Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, a legendary warrior figure in Japanese mythology. Locals affectionately call the shrine Kobugahara-sama or Komine-sama, and it’s known as a center of tengu worship—the long-nosed, winged spirits of Japanese folklore.
During autumn, the grounds are beautifully lit with red and gold foliage, making it a breathtaking place for both spiritual reflection and seasonal scenery. Whether you’re drawn by the history, the mountain air, or the rich colors of fall, Furumine Shrine offers a serene escape from the everyday.

Crimson Maples & Clear Streams in Ōashi Valley
#hellohalloween
Autumn in Japan brings a kaleidoscope of color—and if you’re looking to experience that without the crowds, head to Ōashi Valley (大芦渓谷) in Tochigi Prefecture. This hidden gem is all about clear mountain streams, peaceful forest paths, and vivid fall foliage that seems to light up the entire landscape.
One of the most breathtaking sights here is the “Ōmomiji” (大もみじ)—a single, massive maple tree near Shiraihirabashi Bridge (白井平橋). In peak season, its leaves turn a blazing red, spreading out in all directions like fire across the sky. Standing beneath it feels like you’ve stepped into a living painting.
Combine that with the sound of the river gently flowing through the gorge, and you have the perfect setting for a peaceful autumn escape. Whether you’re capturing photos or just soaking in the beauty, Ōashi Valley is a spectacular and underrated spot for fall color lovers.

Takanoya Mountain - Quiet Green Fields
Mount Takatoriya is renowned for its unique natural landscape, a vast expanse of green mountains resembling a series of ink paintings swaying in the wind. Mount Takatoriya's volcanic lake is a major feature of the area. Located within the crater, the lake was formed by geological changes following the eruption, creating a funnel-shaped depression. Later, rainfall and snowmelt gradually accumulated water, ultimately forming this beautiful volcanic lake. The lake, like a giant mirror, illuminated by sunlight, brings a touch of vitality to this tranquil landscape.
Lush trees surround the lake, and wildlife roams through the trees, their silhouettes looming among the foliage, adding a touch of wild charm to the greenery.

Isosama Shrine Hydrangeas and Summer Purification
June marks the 'Nagoshi no Ooharae' (Summer Purification Ceremony)!
On the last day of June, which represents the halfway point of the year, this ceremony is held at shrines across Japan.
The ritual involves purifying the sins and impurities accumulated over the past six months and praying for good health and safety for the remaining half of the year. A 'Chinowa' (a ring made of grass) is set up for this purpose.
This year, Isosama Shrine held its first-ever 'Nagoshi no Ooharae.'
A shrine priest or staff member explained how to pass through the Chinowa, and there were instructions written on a signboard as well 🙆♀️.
It is said that passing through the Chinowa helps cleanse and remove misfortunes.
In addition to the Chinowa ritual, 'Hitogata' (paper dolls) are also available for purchase. These paper dolls, shaped like human figures, can be used as substitutes for oneself. You write your name and age on them, and they are purified on your behalf.

⛩ [Tochigi・Furumine Shrine] Meet Tengu and take a spiritual cleansing journey to this miraculous mountain shrine
⛩ [Tochigi, Furumine Shrine] Meet Tengu and take a spiritual cleansing journey at this miraculous mountain shrine
Furumine Shrine is located deep in the mountains of Kanuma City, a short distance from Nikko,
enshrined in a sacred atmosphere surrounded by greenery.
The main deity is Emperor Yamato Takeru, and it is also known as a sacred place for Tengu faith.
You can feel the silence of the forest and the tense atmosphere from the moment you visit the shrine.
This is a "place of prayer" where you can be freed from the hustle and bustle of modern times and face yourself.
⸻
🏯Features and Attractions
・Tengu statues are scattered throughout the shrine, creating a sacred and somewhat familiar atmosphere
・The goshuin is very popular, with a "Tengu ink writing" on it. Many people are impressed by the force and beauty of the brushstrokes.
・You can visit the majestic main hall, and if you walk to the inner shrine "Furuminegahara"** on the mountain behind the temple, you can experience a special spiritual experience.
⸻
🚗Access
・About 50 minutes by taxi from JR Nikko Line "Kanuma Station" (public transportation is limited, so we recommend using a car)
・About 70 minutes by car from "Kanuma IC" on the Tohoku Expressway. There are mountain roads along the way, so drive slowly.
・Free parking is available, and it is recommended to visit during the autumn foliage season and the consecutive autumn foliage season. It gets a bit crowded on holidays, so it's best to visit early in the morning.
⸻
🍁Recommended seasons
・May to June for fresh greenery and late October to early November for autumn leaves are especially recommended.
・The snowy scenery is also beautiful, so December to February is also attractive for those who want to enjoy the quiet of winter.
・On days when there are events related to Tengu faith, special goshuin and omamori are given out.
⸻
🧘♀️Experience points
・If you wish, you can also **formal worship (fee required)**. The recitation of prayers by the priests and the offering of tamagushi are touching moments.
・The time spent gazing at the pond and garden while enjoying matcha and Japanese sweets at the adjacent "Komineen" is also exceptional.
・For souvenirs, we recommend Tengu-themed omamori and ofuda. Great for a trip souvenir.
⸻
👣Travel tips
· If you want to know more about the legend of Tengu, we recommend reading the history of the shrine on the official website before visiting.
· The culture of quiet worship is alive and well, so refrain from taking photos and talking.
· If you have the stamina, the best part of the trip is walking from the back approach to the inner shrine as if you were hiking.
⸻
Furumine Shrine is the perfect place to get away from your daily life and reexamine yourself.
Please try to experience a trip surrounded by tranquility and pure air on the sacred mountain protected by Tengu.

[Tochigi] I don't really want to tell you about this 🙅 Emotional hydrangea spot where you can get intoxicated by the graceful atmosphere ✨
There's a spot in Tochigi that's so emotionally overwhelming with its hydrangeas, it's incredible! The sight of lanterns lit alongside the hydrangeas is a unique experience available only now!
The place I'm introducing this time is the Isoyama Shrine in Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture.
Despite being a very small shrine, it's also a historic site related to the Tokugawa shogunate. Nestled within a cedar forest, the shrine's hydrangea-lined approach is lit by lanterns, casting the flowers in a faint light that creates an ethereal atmosphere, unlike anything you can see elsewhere.
The hydrangeas are beautiful during the day, but I especially recommend visiting in the evening as it starts to get dark, around 6:00 to 7:15 PM, for the best photos.
Unfortunately, due to traffic, I arrived later than planned and it was quite dark. The 'Hydrangea Festival' is being held from June 15 to June 30, 2024, with the lights on from evening until 8:00 PM.
The photo was taken on June 17. According to the official website, the hydrangeas are currently in full bloom, but there are still more to come!
So, if you're reading this, definitely take a trip to Isoyama Shrine.
I'm looking forward to your comments!

[Furumine Shrine/Tochigi Prefecture] A hidden gem in Kanuma!? Tengu no Mori
A hidden gem in Kanuma, the Tengu's Forest.
Located in Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture, the Furumiya Shrine stands in a deeply mountainous area beside the flowing Oashi River.
It is also called the 'Birthplace of Nikko' as Shodo Shonin, who is said to be the founder of the Nikko mountains, practiced asceticism here.
During the era rich in Shugendo tradition, it was customary for the monks of the entire Nikko mountains to train in the old Furumiya field.
The enshrined deity is Yamato Takeru.
Within the shrine grounds, there are many Tengu 👺.
The Tengu are said to be messengers of the enshrined deity, believed to ward off disasters.
Pilgrimage lodging is available, and you can admire the interior! The Great Tengu and the Crow Tengu, which are believed to have been dedicated by worshippers, are a must-see.
