Phra That Don Kaeo (Phra Maha That Chedi)
Phra That Don Kaew (Phra Maha That Chedi) is located at Ban Don Kaew, Kumphawapi District, Udon Thani Province. It is a small island in the middle of Nong Han Lake in Kumphawapi District and is the origin of the Lam Pao River. The island is round and surrounded by a moat. Inside the island are high and low hills. Legend has it that a group of Arahants were going to pay homage to Phra That Phanom and stayed overnight on Don Kaew Island. One of the Arahants was seriously ill and passed away. The remaining Arahants then cremated him and built a chedi to enshrine the relics.
Later, around 11 B.E., a group of people came to Don Kaew and built sandstone sema markers around the chedi and placed them around the Don Kaew area. From the study, it was found that these are Dvaravati-era sema markers.
Later, the Lao community migrated from Roi Et and Chaiyaphum to settle in Don Kaew. Thao Chin was the community leader and restored the chedi. (From the inscription at the base of the pagoda in ancient Lao characters) it says that the restoration was completed in 1898.
Around 1928, many communities moved into Don Kaeo, most of whom were Lao Wiang. Therefore, they built a temple to perform religious ceremonies at Don Kaeo, named "Wat Mahathat Chedi".
In 1970, Phra Khru Sangkharak (Chon), the abbot, collaborated with the villagers of Don Kaeo to restore the pagoda to be stronger than before. From the study by archaeologists from Silpakorn University, it was found that the pagoda is no less than 1,500 years old, and the surrounding sema stones are approximately 11 years old. If you have the opportunity to pass through Udon Thani Province on Highway No. 2 Udon Thani - Khon Kaen, you can stop by at the Kumphawapi Bridge, turn left into Kumphawapi District, a distance of 15 kilometers to the district.
