Phra That Don Kaew (Phra Maha That Chedi) is located at Ban Don Kaew, Kumphawapi District, Udon Thani Province. Inside the island are high and low hills. Legend has it that a group of Arahants were going to pay homage to Phra That Phanom and stayed overnight on Don Kaew Island. Later, around 11 B.E., a group of people came to Don Kaew and built sandstone sema markers around the chedi and placed them around the Don Kaew area. From the study, it was found that these are Dvaravati-era sema markers. Later, the Lao community migrated from Roi Et and Chaiyaphum to settle in Don Kaew.
