The Pinware River Trail (6 km return, easy-moderate) follows the river through a mossy boreal forest of black spruce and tamarack. The mossy section: the river's edge where the water slows into oxbows—sphagnum on every fallen log, reindeer lichen in the open spruce, and in August a carpet of bakeapple and partridgeberry. I wore trail-runners, fine in dry August, but after rain the trail turns to a muddy trench—rubber boots recommended. No permit for the provincial park trail; the national park reserve is currently permit-free for day use (Parks Canada is still developing infrastructure). If you're visiting the Gold Coast, don't miss the daily pelican feeding at Charis Seafoods in Labrador. It's a unique and free experience that's perfect for families, couples, or anyone who enjoys wildlife. The pelican feeding starts at 1:30 PM every day, but it's worth arriving 20–30 minutes early to get a good spot as the birds start gathering beforehand. Watching dozens of pelicans come together for feeding was such a fun experience. Seeing these huge birds up close was amazing, and there were plenty of opportunities to take great photos. The staff made the feeding enjoyable while ensuring the birds were looked after. After the feeding, we grabbed some fish and chips from Charis and enjoyed them by the Broadwater. There's also a calm beach, shaded picnic areas, a playground, and clean public facilities nearby, making it easy to spend a few relaxing hours there.
