Personal experience with off-peak autumn travel: connecting cities is worry-free and avoids disappointments.
01 Jining | Shandong
In autumn, the ginkgo trees at the Confucius Temple in Jining turn yellow first. For the Qufu Ming Dynasty City (Three Confucius Sites) tourist area, I suggest you go early, entering as soon as it opens at 7:30 am. The Confucius Temple is less crowded in the early morning; the sunlight slants through the eaves of the Dacheng Hall, casting long shadows on the blue brick floor. Walk slowly, and you can hear your own footsteps echoing in the corridors. The persimmon trees in the back garden of the Confucius Mansion are laden with bright red fruit, unpicked and just hanging there. Don't walk the entire Confucius Forest; just take an electric cart to the tomb of Confucius to save your energy for the rest of the trip.
🍜 At noon, leave the scenic area and turn onto Gulou Street. Find a small shop and eat braised pork rice with a braised egg; 15 yuan is all you can eat. In the afternoon, head to the Weishan Lake tourist area. By then, the lotus flowers have faded, but the reeds are a vast expanse of white. Take a boat onto the lake; it's windy, so remember to bring a light jacket. The salted duck eggs sold by local families near the lake are delicious, with runny yolks, and cost five yuan each – definitely worth buying.
⚠️ The number of tourists at the Three Confucius Sites Scenic Area increases dramatically after 4 PM, with tour groups crowding in. If possible, visit in the morning rather than the afternoon.
02 Jingmen|Hubei
Many people come to Jingmen specifically for the Ming Dynasty imperial tombs. To be honest, I'm usually indifferent to artificial replicas of ancient architecture, but the Ming Dynasty tombs are different. They are genuine Ming Dynasty imperial tombs, a World Heritage Site. The stone statues, the Ming Tower, and the treasure mound are all antique. Standing on the sacred path, with the stone camels and unicorns standing silently on either side, the wind rustling through the pine forest – that sense of solemnity is impossible to fake.
⏰ It's recommended to enter the scenic area after 2 PM, when the light is at a lower angle, and the colors of the red walls and yellow tiles are at their most vibrant. The tour route is simple: enter through the New Red Gate and walk all the way to the treasure mound, which takes about two hours.
⚠️ There are no proper places to eat inside the scenic area. There are only a few stalls selling grilled sausages and bottled water near the entrance. It's best to have lunch in Zhongxiang city before coming. For accommodation, I recommend staying near Mochou Lake. It's convenient for evening walks, and the lake breeze is much more comfortable than staying in the city. If you're bringing elderly people, be prepared that the stone path along the sacred path is a bit bumpy and wheelchairs may have difficulty moving.
03 Alxa League | Inner Mongolia
Late September in Alxa is the season for poplar forests. In the Ejina Poplar Forest Tourist Area, the leaves are a vibrant, golden yellow—a golden hue that photos can't capture. You have to stand under the trees and see the sunlight filtering through the leaves; it's so warm and inviting. The scenic area is divided into eight bridges. I suggest taking the shuttle bus directly to the fourth bridge, the filming location for the movie "Hero," where the poplars are densest and have the most beautiful shapes. Then walk back; the reflection forest at the second bridge is perfect for taking photos of the reflections in the water, especially when there are fewer people.
⏰ The light is softest an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset, so don't waste time rushing. The Badain Jaran Desert is nearby, so you can plan to visit both in one day. A desert off-road vehicle ride is a must; the driver will take you up the dunes, and the feeling of weightlessness is exhilarating, but those prone to motion sickness should take medication beforehand.
⚠️ Cell phone signal is intermittent in the desert, so bring enough cash. Water and snacks in tourist areas are only accepted in cash. Accommodation is basic, so don't have high expectations; being able to shower is a bonus.
04 Changchun|Jilin
Changchun is a city best explored at a leisurely pace over two days. I recommend setting aside at least half a day for the Puppet Emperor's Palace Museum. The Jixi Building, Qinmin Building, and Tongde Hall each hold a story. Puyi's life, from emperor to citizen, is condensed within this courtyard. It might leave you feeling a little heavy-hearted, but it's worth it. In the afternoon, I went to Changchun World Sculpture Park. It was much larger than I expected, with sculptures scattered across the lawns and lakeside. If you got tired, you could take an electric scooter for ten yuan per person.
🍜 In the evening, I went to Guilin Road Night Market. Grilled cold noodles, chicken soup tofu skewers, and fried noodles—twenty yuan was enough to fill you up! The next morning, I went to Changchun Film Studio. It's more entertainment-oriented and would be great with kids, but if you're not interested in the film industry, you can skip it. Jingyuetan is best visited in the afternoon. Rent a bicycle and ride along the lake; the forest coverage is extremely high, and the air is sweet.
⚠️ The Puppet Emperor's Palace is closed on Mondays, so don't waste your trip. Jingyuetan is very large; don't try to walk the whole thing, just ride a section.
05 Zhangzhou|Fujian
What surprised me most about Zhangzhou was Yunshuiyao Ancient Town. It wasn't overly commercialized. Old banyan trees lined the stream, waterwheels creaked and turned, villagers washed vegetables by the stream, and dogs sunbathed on the stone steps. Walking along the cobblestone path, you'll see earthen buildings on both sides. Hegui Building is square, while Huaiyuan Building is round; you can go inside and explore.
🍜 The taro buns and meat-filled flatbreads in town are only five yuan each, served hot—perfect for a stroll. The Nanjing Tulou Scenic Area isn't far from Yunshuiyao, but if you're short on time, I recommend only visiting Yunshuiyao. Seeing too many tulou can lead to aesthetic fatigue; choosing one or two representative buildings is enough. The Binhai Volcanic National Geopark is in Zhangpu, a bit far from the city center, but worth the trip. The black volcanic rock coastline, with waves crashing and splashing white spray, possesses a rugged beauty you can't find anywhere else.
⚠️ The wind in the volcanic park is incredibly strong; your hat will be blown away, so long-haired people should definitely tie it up. For accommodation, I recommend staying in Yunshuiyao Ancient Town. The sound of the stream will lull you to sleep at night—a much better experience than staying in the county seat.
06 Chizhou|Anhui
Jiuhua Mountain in Chizhou is most comfortable to visit in autumn. The maple leaves on the mountain have turned red, the ginkgo leaves have turned yellow, and the yellow walls of the temple are partially hidden among the colorful forests, like a painting. I suggest you take the cable car up the mountain to save energy for the steps. The Hall of the Corpse's Body is a must-see; it's very popular, but avoid going on the first and fifteenth of the lunar month, as it gets incredibly crowded.
⏰ Go up the mountain before 7:00 AM to catch the monks' morning prayers. The chanting echoes through the valley, a tranquility that money can't buy in the city. You can walk to the Hundred-Year-Old Palace, about 40 minutes, with beautiful scenery along the way, including views of the sea of clouds in the distance. After descending, head to Jiuhua Street; the vegetarian restaurants there are quite good. I recommend the vegetarian duck and braised pork with dried bamboo shoots; it costs around 30 yuan per person and you'll have a satisfying meal.
⚠️ The temperature difference on the mountain is significant; it's only around 10 degrees Celsius in the mornings and evenings, so bring a fleece jacket. If you're bringing elderly people, avoid the path to the Hundred-Year-Old Palace, as the steps are too steep. Just take the cable car directly to and from the Hall of the Corpse's Body.
07 Dalian | Liaoning
In Dalian, the sea breeze is cool in autumn, but the sun is still warm. I recommend spending a whole day at Jinshitan National Tourist Resort. Start your day at the Geological Park, where the strangely shaped sea-eroded landforms seem sculpted by time. Walking along the boardwalk, every turn reveals a surprise. At noon, choose your own seafood at the Jinshitan Seafood Market and have it cooked at a nearby restaurant for ten yuan per dish – much cheaper than eating in the scenic area. In the afternoon, head to the Golden Coast; the sand is fine, there are few people, and it's cool and comfortable to walk on barefoot. Tiger Beach Ocean Park is suitable for families with children, but if you're not particularly interested in marine life, you can skip it, as the entrance fee is not cheap. Tangli Lake Park is a local favorite; in autumn, the maple leaves turn red, and a two-hour walk around the lake is so quiet you can hear the falling leaves. Visit Xinghai Square at night; the lights and sea breeze create a romantic atmosphere.
⚠️ Choose only one of Jinshitan or Tiger Beach; don't try to do too much, or you'll spend the whole day rushing around. 08 Yinchuan | Ningxia
Autumn in Yinchuan is characterized by clear skies and gentle breezes, perfect for outdoor activities. At Mingcui Lake National Wetland Park, the reeds turn golden, and a boat trip through them startles a flock of waterbirds, creating a vivid scene. The Helan Mountain rock paintings, carved into the rocks, are relics left by nomadic peoples thousands of years ago. Standing before them and touching the carvings gives you a sense of stepping back in time.
⏰ Go after 3 PM when the sunlight shines obliquely on the rock walls, making the carvings clearer. Lingwu Shuidonggou Tourist Area is the most special stop on this trip. Hidden soldier caves, the Ming Great Wall, and the Grand Canyon create a landscape so diverse it's like a movie scene. Walking along the Ming Great Wall, with one foot in Ningxia and the other in Inner Mongolia, is a fascinating experience. The Western Xia Imperial Tombs are the last stop; the massive mounds stand silently in the setting sun, like enigmas.
⚠️ The wind is strong at the Western Xia Mausoleums, so bring a windproof jacket if you visit in autumn. For accommodation, I recommend staying in the old town near the Drum Tower. In the evening, head to South Gate Square for roasted lamb leg, paired with a bottle of Western Xia beer – a perfect ending!
September and October are the gentlest months for these places. Fewer people, beautiful scenery, and just the right breeze. Choose two or three destinations to visit; you won't be disappointed. Let's chat in the comments: which place do you most want to go to?
