Longhui travel guide and discussion

If it's your first time in Shaoyang, don't join a tour group—I'm being honest with you✨ I'm telling you from the heart: if it's your first time in Shaoyang, definitely don't book a tour group! Shaoyang's attractions are spread across different counties, with World Heritage Danxia landforms, alpine grasslands, and ancient Miao and Yao villages scattered everywhere. Low-cost group tours usually involve early morning departures and rushing around. You'll only get 10 minutes to snap photos of the Langshan sea of clouds, and you won't have time to wait for the sunset at Nanshan Pasture. You'll waste tons of time in souvenir shops being pushed to buy pig blood tofu balls and braised snacks. These assembly-line itineraries make it impossible to experience the charm of Baoqing's landscapes. A self-guided trip lets you set your own pace—taking your time hiking and slurping noodles is the right way to experience Shaoyang. 📅 3-day, 2-night self-guided itinerary Day 1: Shaoyang city | The vibrant life of the thousand-year-old Baoqing ancient city Arrive at Shaoyang Station. Don't book tickets to Shaoyang North Station, as it's very far from the city center. For breakfast, head straight to an old local shop to slurp a bowl of thick Shaoyang rice noodles with large slices of beef topping and a dash of soul-satisfying mountain pepper oil. In the morning, explore the Baoqing Ancient City Wall and Linjin Gate, take a stroll along the Zi River, and visit the Shuifu Temple. The red walls and ancient architecture create a great atmosphere, and everything is free. If you have time, visit the Shaoyang Museum to learn about Baoqing's history. In the afternoon, head to the Former Residence of Cai E; the blue-brick courtyard is quiet and serene. In the evening, explore the old town, enjoy local late-night snacks, and stay in the city center, where dining and shopping are convenient. Day 2: Langshan, the soul of Danxia World Heritage Depart early for Langshan in Xinning, a 5A World Natural Heritage site. The joint ticket is valid for 3 days. Head to Bajiaozhai first. If you're lucky, you can see the "Whales Frolicking in the Sea" cloudscape. From the summit, you can overlook the thousands of Danxia peaks on the border of Hunan and Guangxi. Next, visit Tianyi Lane, the "Number One Lane in the World." The rock walls are narrow and deep, requiring you to turn sideways to pass through. In the afternoon, visit Lajiao Peak and Camel Peak; the red rock formations are breathtaking. For lunch, have blood-sauce duck in Xinning town—it's authentic southwestern Hunan flavor. Stay at a homestay at the foot of Langshan in the evening to make it easier to wake up early for the sunrise the next day. Day 3: Nanshan Pasture, southern alpine grasslands (choose one option) Option A: Nanshan Pasture. Drive up the mountain. Known as the "Hulunbuir of the South," it sits at an altitude of over 1,700 meters with vast meadows, herds of cattle and sheep, and windmills scattered across the mountains. View the panorama from Ziyang Peak, take photos at Maoping Lake, and taste fresh milk and handmade yogurt. Wait for the sunset over the grasslands in the evening, and if the weather is good, you can see the starry sky at night. Option B: Longhui Huayao Scenic Area and Huxingshan Terraced Fields. In September–October, the rice fields turn golden. Visit the Huayao ancient villages to experience ethnic minority customs—perfect for those who love culture and pastoral scenery. In the afternoon, buy some local specialties and head home. 🍲 Must-eat food list in Shaoyang ✅ Thick Shaoyang rice noodles: Completely different from Changsha flat noodles. They are thick, round, and chewy, served in a rich beef bone broth. The large-slice beef noodle soup is the gold standard for breakfast. Remember to add a little pickled long bean. ✅ Blood-sauce duck: A signature Shaoyang dish. Young duck is stir-fried with duck blood, young ginger, and chili peppers. The sauce is rich and goes perfectly with rice. ✅ Pig blood tofu balls: An intangible cultural heritage smoked delicacy made from pig blood, tofu, and local pork. Stir-frying them with cured meat is incredibly fragrant, or you can steam and slice them directly. ✅ Wugang braised dishes: Century-old braising recipes. Try the braised dried tofu, braised copper goose, and braised pig trotters. They are savory with a hint of herbal aroma. You can eat them on the spot or buy vacuum-packed ones as souvenirs. ✅ Stir-fried beef tripe from Pingshang: Crispy and refreshing, drizzled with mountain pepper oil for a fragrant finish. Also try Miao-style cured meat, rice paddy fish, sugar oil rice cakes, and grilled beef fat. For souvenirs, we recommend Wugang braised dishes, pig blood tofu balls, and Nanshan dairy products. ⚠️ Tips to avoid tourist traps 1. Attractions are spread across different counties, so self-driving or hiring a legitimate private car is best. County buses are infrequent and stop running early, making public transport exhausting. Don't trust low-priced one-day tours recommended by street vendors or taxi drivers; most are shopping tours. 2. Langshan has many stairs, so wear non-slip sneakers the whole time. Buying a joint ticket online in advance is more cost-effective. If you want to see the sea of clouds at Bajiaozhai in the morning, wake up early and bring a jacket, as it's windy on the mountain. 3. Nanshan Pasture is at a high altitude with a huge temperature difference between day and night, so bring a thick jacket even in autumn. The mountain roads are winding, so drive slowly. Don't trample on the grasslands, and don't feed the cattle or sheep. 4. Shaoyang cuisine is very spicy, so remember to ask for "mildly spicy" when ordering. Try to eat at old shops in residential areas, as restaurants near scenic spots are overpriced. Buy local specialties from legitimate shops, not from street stalls where you might overpay. 5. Don't go off-trail when hiking, and follow the scenic area's fire safety regulations. Respect local ethnic minority customs when visiting ancient villages. 💛 Final thoughts Shaoyang is an underrated treasure in southwestern Hunan, featuring magnificent Danxia landforms on one side and alpine grasslands on the other, plus the vibrant life of a thousand-year-old ancient city and Miao and Yao customs. On a self-guided trip, you don't have to rush. You can wait for the sea of clouds at Bajiaozhai or watch the sunset at Nanshan—whatever you like. Take your time to experience the landscape, slurp noodles, and eat cured meats. That's what makes this trip worth it.

It's so comfortable—not too hot, not too cold, and there are fewer crowds. The best part is that prices are ridiculously low! I spent 3 days and 2 nights there for an average of over CNY 800 per person, covering Langshan Danxia, Nanshan Grassland, and Huayao Ancient Village. Save this ultimate guide—it's packed with useful tips💥 📍Location Shaoyang is in southwest Hunan, about 1.5 hours by high-speed train from Changsha. Remember to book your ticket to Shaoyang Station; definitely don't book to Shaoyang North Station, as it's very far from the city center! September–October is the best season for Shaoyang—not too hot or cold, with golden rice terraces, yellowing meadows, and a perfect autumn atmosphere. 🍜Food (follow the locals) 1. Shaoyang Rice Noodles—a must-try! The handmade thick noodles are chewy, the beef toppings are thick and flavorful, and a splash of red chili oil makes them irresistible. There are many old shops on Hongqi Road; go early for the most authentic experience. 2. Wugang Braised Dishes—slow-cooked with dozens of Chinese herbs. The braised dried tofu and braised copper goose get tastier the more you chew; they're addictive as a snack. 3. Blood Duck—local free-range tender duck stir-fried with duck blood, young ginger, and fresh chili. It's spicy, rich, and perfect with rice. 4. Stir-fried Pork Blood Balls with Preserved Meat—smoked pork belly stir-fried with pork blood balls; the smoky flavor is incredible. 5. Tangyou Baba—glutinous rice cakes fried until golden and crispy, then coated in brown sugar syrup. Sweet but not cloying. 6. Nanshan Pasture Yogurt—thick and creamy, rich in milky flavor, and costs less than CNY 10. 🏠Accommodation ▪️City Center—Hotels around the high-speed railway station offer great value, with large, clean rooms and breakfast included, averaging around CNY 150 per person. ▪️Huayao Ancient Village—Stay in a stilt-house homestay. You'll be right next to a thousand-year-old forest and can see a starry sky at night, all for just over CNY 100 per person. Be sure to book 3 days in advance during peak season! ▪️Around Langshan—The Yao village homestays on the mountainside are quiet and serene, and some even offer bonfires, ranging from CNY 60–150 per person. ▪️Nanshan Pasture—Stay in the pasture and see the meadows right from your window, perfect for watching the sunrise and sunset. To save money, stay in Chengbu County, where you can find full amenities for about CNY 150 per person. 🗺️Itinerary (3 days, 2 nights, relaxed pace) Day 1: Slow stroll in the city—experience the local vibe. Sleep in → Shaoyang Museum (free, closed on Mondays) → Lunch: a bowl of authentic Shaoyang rice noodles → Afternoon: stroll along the Baoqing Ancient City Wall, with its old alleys and bluestone paths → Evening: head to the Baoqing Night Market for blood duck and pork blood balls. Day 2: Langshan Danxia—a World Natural Heritage site. Morning: depart for Langshan → Morning: visit Bajiao Village to see the Danxia peaks; when the sea of clouds rolls in, you'll feel like you're flying → Lunch: farm-to-table food near the scenic area, featuring free-range chicken and wild vegetables → Afternoon: Chili Peak + Tianyi Lane (the narrowest part is 0.33 meters, you have to turn sideways to pass) → Evening: watch the sunset as the mountains turn orange-red → Stay at a homestay near Langshan. Day 3: Nanshan Pasture—the "Hulunbuir of the South." Morning: depart for Nanshan Pasture → Ziyang Peak: overlook the vast meadows with windmills and cows in the same frame → Gaoshan Hongshao: take retro military-style photos → Afternoon: drink freshly boiled milk and buy yogurt → Return trip. 📸Photo spots 1. Bajiao Village—The best sea of clouds is from 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM, overlooking hundreds of Danxia peaks churning in the clouds, known as "Whales Playing in the Sea." From late August to mid-September, the light is best after 5:30 PM. 2. Chili Peak—It really looks like a giant chili pepper stuck in the mountains; every shot is a winner. 3. Nanshan Pasture Ziyang Peak—360° view of the entire meadow, with windmills, cows, and a lone tree in the same frame—a legendary photo spot. 4. Datuo Stone Waterfall—A massive granite cliff hundreds of meters wide and high, looking like a frozen stone waterfall; even more stunning after rain. 5. Shaoyang North Tower—A Ming Dynasty pagoda by the Zi River. At sunset, the river turns golden, and the reflection of the tower on the water is like a painting. 6. September–October Rice Terraces—The golden rice waves at Baishuidong/Wanguanchong Terraces are beautiful, especially with morning mist and sunrise. ⚠️Tips to avoid pitfalls (hard-learned lessons) 1. Definitely don't join a group tour! Low-price tours have many traps and unavoidable forced shopping. Traveling on your own is freer and cheaper. 2. Book your high-speed train ticket to Shaoyang Station. If you book to Shaoyang North Station, you'll be in trouble, as it's very far from the city center. 3. Enter Wangxi Waterfall from the exit; it's 80% downhill and saves energy. Entering from the entrance requires climbing steep slopes, which is exhausting. 4. Don't eat at restaurants at the entrance of scenic areas. Head into the ancient village farmhouses; the ingredients are homegrown, and the value is much better. 5. Don't take unlicensed motorcycles at the village entrance; they are heavily overpriced. Contact your homestay host in advance to arrange a local driver for a more reliable experience. 6. There is a large temperature difference between day and night in the mountains. Be sure to bring a light jacket; it gets chilly after sunset at high altitudes. 7. Wear comfortable shoes; Langshan has many stairs that are tough on the legs. Don't wear high heels on the stone paths of the ancient village. 8. Langshan and Nanshan Pasture are far apart; arrange a full day for each. Before Shaoyang becomes too popular, hurry up and go, ladies! With fewer crowds, beautiful scenery, and low prices, you'll truly be healed by this hidden gem of a city💚

Stop crowding into Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang Ancient Town! Deep in the Xuefeng Mountains lies a Huayao ancient village with almost no tourists. Even many locals don't know about it. I've kept it as a personal secret for a long time, and I'm truly afraid it will lose its charm once discovered by crowds of tourists. 📍Huayao Ancient Village, Huxingshan, Longhui, Shaoyang 🌿Why it's so niche ▪Inconvenient transportation: No direct high-speed rail, many winding mountain roads, better suited for a road trip ▪Zero over-commercialization: No trendy shops, photo props, or paid performances ▪Authentic local life: The village is still home to indigenous residents, offering a glimpse into real, everyday rural life 📸Highlights 🌾Ten-thousand-acre terraced fields: Mirror-like flooded fields in spring, golden waves of rice in autumn. Few crowds, perfect for great photos 👘Huayao culture: Encounter grandmas making traditional embroidery, experience authentic ethnic minority customs 🥾Mountain hiking: Walk along terraced paths, see streams and ancient trees, enjoy the atmospheric morning sea of clouds and mist 🚗Travel guide ✅About a 3.5h drive from Changsha. The mountain roads are winding, so drive slowly in the rain ✅Public transport: Take a rural bus from Longhui High-Speed Railway Station, which takes longer ⏰Best time to visit: April–May for flooded terraces | September–October for the autumn harvest 💡Tips: Limited homestays, so book in advance. Please protect the environment and practice leave-no-trace travel

Shaoyang is a hidden gem of a city that is truly underrated! Don't think Hunan tourism is just about Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang Ancient Town! Shaoyang is actually home to countless breathtaking landscapes, from towering alpine grasslands and mysterious Danxia landforms to primitive, quaint villages and quiet, cool canyons. It has it all! With fewer tourists, a serene environment, pristine natural scenery, and very affordable prices, I've carefully curated 4 must-visit top-tier scenic spots. Whether you're looking for a short weekend getaway or an in-depth experience during a long holiday, this guide is perfect. Save this for later—follow this guide for your 2026 trip to Shaoyang, and you won't be disappointed! 🏞️ Langshan Scenic Area | A stunning Danxia wonderland ✨ Highlights This is a true World Natural Heritage site! Known as the "Soul of Danxia," it offers grand landscapes with immense visual impact. The area is filled with rolling Danxia peaks, deep and quiet canyons, and rare "sky slit" wonders. The sea of clouds at Bajiazhai is absolutely unique! After the rain, the morning clouds surge and roll, making the peaks look like they are floating above the clouds, resembling thousands of whales swimming in the sea. Witnessing it in person is incredibly healing and breathtaking. Plus, there's the uniquely shaped Chili Peak and the winding alleyways. Every step offers a new view, and it's just as beautiful as any famous, well-known scenic spot! 🚗 Transportation Driving is highly recommended. Simply navigate to the North Gate of Langshan. The scenic area is well-organized, and parking is very convenient. Travelers from out of town can take a high-speed train to Shaoyang Station and then transfer to a vehicle directly to Xinning Langshan. Public buses are infrequent and time-consuming, so they are not the recommended option. 🏡 Accommodation It's best to stay at a guesthouse in Langshan Town. It's very close to the scenic area, and you can easily walk to the entrance. If you want to catch the sunrise and sea of clouds, staying in town is the most convenient option—no need for an early, long commute. Just open your door and embrace the mountain scenery. 📸 Tips 1. The best time to see the sea of clouds is early in the morning after rain. You're highly likely to see a dreamlike, fairyland scene. 2. If you're not feeling up for a hike, take the cable car to easily reach the summit and overlook the entire Danxia mountain range. 3. The Tianyi Alley section is relatively narrow and cool. Please slow down when passing through, and avoid gathering for photos or lingering for too long. 🌿 Nanshan Pasture | A vast grassland in the southern clouds ✨ Highlights This is Hunan's hidden "Little Altai"! No need to travel far to the north; you can experience vast alpine grasslands right here. With a high average altitude, the climate is cool and comfortable year-round, making it a perfect natural summer retreat. With rolling green meadows, scattered white windmills, and cows grazing leisurely, the atmosphere is gentle and healing. During the day, you can relax and let your mind wander; in the evening, enjoy the sunset that looks like an orange sea; and at night, look up at the starry sky—it's incredibly romantic! 🚗 Transportation Driving yourself up the mountain is the best choice. The mountain road offers beautiful scenery, and you can stop whenever you like. If you choose public transport, you'll need to reach Chengbu County first and then transfer to a rural bus to get into the mountains. This is quite a hassle due to infrequent schedules and isn't suitable for travelers on a tight schedule. 🏡 Accommodation Guesthouses and hotels around Nanshan Town are good choices. If you want to watch the sunrise and stars, prioritize guesthouses located on the mountainside. There is a large temperature difference between day and night on the mountain, so local accommodations are usually well-equipped to keep you warm. 📸 Tips 1. There is a huge temperature difference on the mountain! Even if you visit in mid-summer, be sure to bring a thin, windproof jacket. 2. Please be a respectful visitor when watching the cattle and sheep. Do not chase or feed them; just keep quiet and take photos. 3. On sunny days, the view is wide and perfect for photos. In foggy weather, visibility is lower, which is better for a relaxed, leisurely stroll. 🏡 Huxingshan Huayao Scenic Area | A niche, ancient ethnic secret spot ✨ Highlights This is a super niche, primitive treasure! Hidden deep in the heart of the Xuefeng Mountains, it has remained almost completely untouched by commercialization. The thousand-year-old cedar forest is lush, the air quality is excellent, and it's a true natural oxygen bar. As a unique settlement for the Huayao people, you can see traditional ethnic clothing and stilt-house villages everywhere, full of rich, authentic local life. There are also cascading waterfalls and giant natural stone waterfalls. The streams are lively in spring and summer, and quiet and primitive in autumn and winter—it has a different beauty in every season! 🚗 Transportation Driving is the most comfortable experience. Set your navigation to Chongmu Dang Ancient Village. After exiting the highway, most of the road consists of winding mountain curves, so please slow down and drive safely. You can also take a high-speed train to Longhui Station and then carpool directly to the ancient village, which is more cost-effective. 🏡 Accommodation I highly recommend staying in a local stilt-house guesthouse to immerse yourself in the unique charm of the slow-paced mountain village life. The air in the mountains is relatively humid, so prioritize rooms that are well-ventilated and dry for a more comfortable stay. 📸 Tips 1. Mobile signal in the mountains is generally weak, so it's recommended to download offline maps in advance to avoid getting lost. 2. Please respect the customs and traditions of the ethnic minority and do not take photos of local residents without permission. 3. The waterfall boardwalks can be slippery, so be sure to slow down when walking and always put safety first. 💦 Baishuidong Scenic Area | A cool canyon oxygen bar ✨ Highlights This is a summer retreat kept secret by the locals of Shaoyang! It has everything: quiet canyons, babbling streams, cascading waterfalls, and dreamy caves. The entire route consists of flat boardwalks, so there's almost no need to climb mountains. It's perfect for seniors, children, and those who prefer a relaxed trip. It feels super cool when you enter the mountains in summer, with crystal-clear streams and lush greenery, making it the top choice for escaping the heat. The caves maintain a constant temperature year-round—warm in winter and cool in summer—making them suitable for visiting in any season! 🚗 Transportation For self-driving, navigate directly to Baishuidong Scenic Area. It's very close to the city, making it convenient for short trips. You can also take a local bus, which is suitable for daily leisure trips for locals. 🏡 Accommodation A single day is enough for the trip, and you can return to the city for accommodation after finishing your itinerary. If you want a slow-paced, in-depth experience, you can also stay at a local farmhouse near the scenic area, where the environment is quiet and cozy. 📸 Tips 1. After heavy rain, the waterfalls are full of water, making the scenery most spectacular and breathtaking. 2. The temperature inside the caves is on the lower side, so remember to bring a thin jacket to keep warm. 3. There are many mosquitoes in the forest, so be sure to prepare mosquito repellent for protection. 🍜 Must-try Shaoyang specialties ✅ Blood Duck: Shaoyang's signature top dish! The duck is spicy and flavorful, with a rich sauce that goes perfectly with rice. A must-try when you come to Shaoyang in 2026! ✅ Pork Blood Balls: A local smoked specialty. They have a firm texture and are delicious when stir-fried with cured meat—full of authentic farmhouse flavor. ✅ Wugang Braised Food: Braised dried tofu, braised goose, braised chicken feet—the flavor is rich and savory, and the more you eat, the more addictive it gets. ✅ Miao-style Cured Meat, Stir-fried Fern Cake with Cured Meat: Full of wild mountain flavor, fresh and savory without being greasy—these are delicious, authentic home-cooked dishes. ✅ Handmade Ciba (sticky rice cake), Local Rice Cake: Soft, glutinous, and sweet, suitable for all ages—the top choice for a satisfying snack. 💡 General travel tips 1. Shaoyang has many mountain scenic areas with large temperature differences between day and night. Regardless of the season, a thin jacket is essential. 2. There are many mountain roads, so wear comfortable flat shoes for the whole trip to avoid tired feet and stay safe. 3. Try to travel on weekdays when it's less crowded and quiet. You won't have to wait in line, and your travel experience will be doubled. 4. There are few convenience stores in mountain scenic areas, so prepare drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent in advance. 5. Travel responsibly throughout your trip, protect the mountain vegetation, and practice "leave no trace" travel to avoid damaging the ecosystem. 💛 Final thoughts I really love the landscapes of Shaoyang! It has the grandeur of Danxia, the gentleness of grasslands, the authentic life of ancient villages, and the coolness of canyons. It's niche and uncrowded, beautiful and not overly commercialized, and both food and accommodation are affordable. You don't need to travel across provinces to unlock 4 completely different types of stunning scenery. While the time is right, hurry up and plan a trip to Shaoyang to immerse yourself in the romance and healing of southwest Hunan!

It has everything: alpine terraced fields, a thousand-year-old forest, and ethnic intangible cultural heritage. It's uncrowded, beautiful, and perfect for escaping the city noise. 🗓️Day 1 | Arrive at Huayao Ancient Village and immerse yourself in the local life of the Yao people Arrive at Chongmudang Huayao Ancient Village in the afternoon and check into a stilt-house homestay. Open the window to see rolling mountains, and breathe in the fresh scent of the forest. First, explore the thousand-year-old forest, where centuries-old trees block out the sky and stone paths wind through the woods. You might run into a local grandmother sitting under a tree, working on Huayao cross-stitch—an intangible cultural heritage you can wear, with every stitch telling a story of the past. In the evening, head to the terraced fields to wait for the sunset. The setting sun casts a warm glow over the layers of terraces, bathing the mountains in light. For dinner, try a local farmhouse meal. Must-try dishes include firewood-smoked bacon, pork blood balls, and rice paddy fish—all authentic, locally sourced ingredients full of rustic charm. If you're lucky, you might catch a bonfire party. Join the Yao people in singing folk songs and dancing, a lively and healing experience. 🗓️Day 2 | Hiking in nature, discovering stone waterfalls and cascading falls Get up early and head to the Datuo Stone Waterfall. The entire mountainside looks like a frozen waterfall of stone—a truly stunning sight. From the observation deck, you can take in the sea of clouds, terraced fields, and mountains. It's perfect for drone photography. In the afternoon, head to the Wangxi Waterfall group. Walk along the waterside boardwalk to see layers of waterfalls cascading down. The stream water is clear and cool, and the air is rich in negative ions—great for refreshing your lungs and relieving stress. If you're tired, you can take the glass slide down the mountain. Return to the ancient village in the evening. Sit on the homestay terrace, relax, and watch the mountain mist slowly rise. At night, with no city light pollution, you can look up and see a sky full of stars. 🗓️Day 3 | Morning mist over the terraces, cultural experiences, and a relaxing trip home You must get up early! In the early morning, thin mist rises in the mountains. The Baishuidong terraced fields are shrouded in clouds, and the mirror-like rice paddies look dreamlike. This is a beauty exclusive to the morning, with almost no tourists around—every photo is a masterpiece. In the morning, try your hand at Huayao cross-stitch and make a small sachet with a local artisan as a souvenir. Take a leisurely stroll through the ancient village and pick up some handmade embroidery, high-mountain cloud tea, or dried bamboo shoots as gifts. Enjoy one last authentic farmhouse meal before heading home at a relaxed pace. 📸 My favorite photo spots ▪️ Thousand-year-old forest: Ancient trees paired with stilt houses for a perfect vintage vibe ▪️ Datuo Stone Waterfall observation deck: Overlook the mountains and terraces for a grand, expansive view ▪️ Baishuidong terraced fields at dawn: Misty, pastoral wonderland ▪️ Old stone alleys in the ancient village: Capture local life with a sense of storytelling 💡 Practical tips to avoid pitfalls 1. Driving is recommended. There are many winding mountain roads and public transportation is inconvenient. Please drive carefully. 2. Most attractions in the ancient village are free, but Wangxi Waterfall requires an admission ticket. Check the latest prices before you go. 3. The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is significant. Even in summer, bring a light jacket. 4. Respect local customs. Do not disturb the villagers' daily lives or pick crops. 5. Try to travel off-peak. It is a bit crowded on weekends, so weekdays offer a better experience. 6. It is recommended to book your homestay in advance, as rooms are limited during peak season. 💰 Estimated costs Homestay: Stilt-house farmhouse homestay CNY 130–300/night Dining: Farmhouse meals, approx. CNY 50–70 per person The total cost for a three-day, two-night trip is around CNY 600 per person, which is great value. There's no noisy influencer traffic here, just mountains, the ancient village, and simple, authentic life. I'm afraid of this place going viral; I hope this beauty can be preserved for a little longer 🍂

While everyone is crowding into Fenghuang and Zhangjiajie, I found this secret spot deep in the Xuefeng Mountains of Hunan—Huxingshan Yao Ethnic Township (Huayao Ancient Village) in Longhui, Shaoyang—where there are almost zero tourists and zero commercialization. Even many locals in Hunan don't know about this place. It hides the most pristine Huayao culture and mountain scenery, so quiet you can hear the wind blowing through the terraced fields. I've kept this to myself for a long time, truly afraid that once it gets popular, it will lose its charm: stilt houses turning into photo studios, trendy coffee carts popping up by the terraces, and grandmas' looms being replaced by mass-produced trinkets… I hesitated for three seconds before posting this, but it's just too beautiful, and I wanted to share it with those who appreciate the same things. Why it's "absolutely off-the-beaten-path and unlikely to get popular" Remote location: Deep in the Xuefeng Mountains, with winding mountain roads and no direct high-speed rail. It's inconvenient without a car, which naturally filters out 90% of tourists. No influencer-style development: No commercial streets, no photo studios, no "I miss you in XX" signs—just ancient villages and raw mountain wilderness. Low-key with no promotion: Almost no guides or marketing; it relies entirely on word-of-mouth and remains "hidden away from the world." Authentic living: Huayao villagers still use ox-drawn plows, transplant rice seedlings, hand-weave embroidery, and make sticky rice cakes. Time seems to have stood still. Key highlights Secret terraced fields: Like a mirror in spring and golden waves in autumn, they layer over the ridges. You can find drone spots anywhere without having to fight for them. Pristine Huayao culture: Watch Yao grandmas weave exquisite embroidery, listen to ancient folk songs, and if you're lucky, you might encounter the "blocking gate" wine ceremony during festivals. It's all part of daily life, not a "performance." Forest oxygen bar: Forest coverage is over 95%. Walking through the woods, you'll only hear birds, wind, and streams. It's 5–8°C cooler than the city in summer. Slow-paced and stress-free: No need to rush to attractions or wait in lines. Just find a local homestay, watch the sunrise over the sea of clouds, see the smoke rising from chimneys, and admire the reflections in the terraces. Transportation (its remoteness is what keeps it peaceful) Driving: About 4 hours from Changsha, 2.5 hours from downtown Shaoyang. The entire mountain route is beautiful, and driving slowly is incredibly therapeutic. Public transport: No direct route. You have to take a bus to Longhui County, then transfer to a local township bus or hire a car. This is exactly why it stays uncrowded. Navigation points: "Longhui Huxingshan Yao Ethnic Township," "Chongmudang Huayao Ancient Village," "Wanguanchong Terraced Fields." Food and accommodation (no price gouging, very reasonable) Stay: Local homestays are around 120 yuan/night, clean and tidy, with windows opening to mountain views and terraces. For more comfort, choose a registered Yao inn in the township for 200–300 yuan. Eat: Yao-style cured meat, wild bracken, home-grown vegetables, firewood-cooked rice, and sticky rice cakes. You can eat your fill for about 30 yuan per person, with no tourist-trap pricing. Bring your own snacks and water; the small shops in the village are few and expensive. Best season & photography March–May: Terraces filled with water like mirrors + azaleas blooming all over the mountain paths. September–October: Golden rice waves and morning mist around the mountains—the best time for photos. July–August: Good for escaping the heat, but expect frequent showers; bring a light raincoat. Outfit: Cotton and linen long dresses or ethnic-style embroidered tops for the terraces; light colors stand out best against the blue tiles and yellow walls. Tips The mountain roads have many sharp turns. Beginners should avoid driving at night; drive during the day. Respect Yao customs when entering the village: Don't step on thresholds, don't take photos of weavers' faces without permission, and don't touch shrines. Don't trust "no-ticket path" unofficial guides. The edges of the terraces are slippery, so don't cross the boundaries. If you really want to stay the night, choose the Chongmudang or Shuilidang sections; they are closest to the morning mist photo spots.   A quick summary for your trip: Drive 4 hours from Changsha to Longhui Huxingshan Huayao Ancient Village → Stay in a homestay for 120 yuan → Photograph the morning mist over the terraces and grandmas weaving embroidery in the morning → Have cured meat and bracken for lunch → Walk the forest boardwalk and listen to the stream in the afternoon → Watch the smoke rise from chimneys at dusk. This is the Xuefeng Mountain secret spot that is least likely to get ruined by popularity—go while you still can.

Traveling through the mountains of southwest Hunan, every mountain, valley, village, and stream is a landscape painting unique to Shaoyang. Take this 4-day, 4-county road trip to discover the lesser-known side of this land. Stop 1: Xinshao The Baishuidong Scenic Area stretches for miles, with towering peaks, waterfalls, and springs. The cliffs and ancient karst cave wonders are captivating. Deep in the mountains, the Baiyun Rock features antique architecture built against the cliff face. Arriving at the Zijiang Small Three Gorges, the green mountains on both banks reflect in the clear water and traditional houses, as if you have stepped into a painting. After dark, the Zijiang Pier comes alive with illuminated ancient-style buildings and riverside walkways, where the light beams of the Lingxi Tower blend with the city's vibrant atmosphere. A wonderful nightlife is just beginning. The next morning, we arrived at Qingshui Village. The forest coverage here exceeds 90%. The mountain springs in the village are crisp and sweet, and there are many long-lived elders here. Xinshao also has the Datong Blessed Land, hidden among the lakes and mountains. Stop 2: Longhui The Huayao Ancient Village on Huxing Mountain blends forests with stilt houses. The annual Huayao Taoliaogui festival is as lively as the Lunar New Year. Immerse yourself in the singing and dancing, drink a bowl of blocking-the-door wine in the ancient village, and catch a performance at the grand theater before leaving, feeling completely satisfied. Continuing on, we arrived at the third stop: Chengbu. Clouds lightly shroud the Nanshan Pasture, where windmills and plants sway in the breeze. Go horseback riding on the mountain or take a stroll by the lake; the scenery is moving everywhere you look. On the way down the mountain, we passed through Taolin Miao Village, where simple stilt houses are arranged along the mountain, and a stream flows slowly through the village, full of the authentic atmosphere of the Miao region. After nightfall, watch "The Moon is Round by the Wushui River." The naked-eye 3D cliff light show, combined with Miao songs and dances, weaves together stories of the Miao people. As the boat drifts slowly on the river, the lights on both banks reflect on the water. This night is destined to be unforgettable. The last stop of the trip is Suining. The Huayuange National Wetland Park is quiet and peaceful. Take a boat ride on the lake, where rolling green mountains and houses are reflected on the water; those who watch the scenery also become part of it. Entering the Huangsang National Nature Reserve, the Liu'e Cave Waterfall group at the end of the Quyou Valley is magnificent, with water flowing like silk and satin. Continuing along the mountain road, the Shangbao Dong Village, hidden in the mountains, was the capital of the ancient Shangbao Kingdom. The Drum Tower and Wind and Rain Bridge stand here, with traces of time everywhere. Far from the hustle and bustle, the mountains are quiet and leisurely. Finally, I must recommend the food in Shaoyang. I ate very well every day. Even just for the food, it is worth a special trip. I have personally scouted this southwest Hunan road trip route, and it is well worth planning a trip.

🙏Incense Purchase Tips After arriving near the scenic area, those driving can purchase incense in advance at the craft shops at the foot of the mountain. We recommend "Peace Incense" and "Wealth God Incense," which are more affordable than buying them on the mountain. If you find this troublesome, the temples on the mountain also offer free incense. Sincerity is key; there's no need to deliberately buy expensive incense. 🗺️One-Day Lunar New Year Blessing Route (Praying from bottom to top is more effective) Specific Route within the Scenic Area 1️⃣ Stop 1: Huacheng Temple — For Disaster Relief The founding temple of Jiuhua Mountain and also a historical and cultural museum. Everyone online is raving about Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang Ancient Town, but today I'm revealing a hidden gem, a secret haven for locals in Hunan. I'm hesitant to share it widely, fearing it might suddenly become a tourist hotspot—the Huayao Ancient Village in Huxingshan, Longhui County, Shaoyang. Nestled deep in the Xuefeng Mountains, it's unknown to most outsiders. Why is it so obscure and rarely visited? 1. High transportation barrier: No direct high-speed rail access, requiring navigating winding mountain roads and complicated public transportation transfers, naturally deterring many short-distance travelers. 2. Zero commercial development: No trendy photo spots, commercial streets, or mass-produced photography studios. No marketing hype, and very few online guides. 3. Preservation of the original village: Local Huayao villagers still farm and weave. There are no paid performances; what you see is authentic rural life, without any attempt to cater to tourists. Must-Visit Off-the-Beaten-Path Spots 1. Thousands of Acres of Terraced Fields in the Mountains: Spring irrigation creates a mirror-like reflection of the mountains and forests, while autumn paints the fields with golden waves of rice. The entire field path is almost deserted, offering stunningly beautiful shots from any angle – no need to fight for a good spot. 2. Authentic Yao Ethnic Culture: At the village entrance, you can see Yao grandmothers hand-embroidering and pounding glutinous rice cakes. You might also encounter villagers singing folk songs and chatting casually – all part of everyday life. No paid performances, allowing you to immerse yourself in the unique culture of this lesser-known ethnic minority. 3. Hiking in the Clouds: Follow the terraced paths deeper into the mountains, passing streams, ancient trees, and wildflowers. In the morning, a thin mist rises from the mountains, making the entire village seem hidden in a sea of clouds – a tranquil and healing experience. 4. Local Farmhouse Cuisine: At the village entrance, you can enjoy cured meat, rice tofu, and glutinous rice cakes cooked over a wood fire. The ingredients are all homegrown and raised, offering affordable prices without the tourist markups. Practical Travel Tips 📍Address: Huxingshan Yao Ethnic Township, Longhui County, Shaoyang City 🚗Transportation: 3.5 hours by car from Changsha; Public transportation: Take the high-speed rail to Longhui Station, then transfer to a rural bus, which takes longer. ⏰Best Time to Visit: April-May (for irrigation of the terraced fields); September-October (for autumn harvest and golden terraced fields). ⚠️Tips for Avoiding Off-the-Beaten-Path Visitors: The mountain roads are winding; drive carefully in rainy weather. There are not many guesthouses in the village; advance booking is recommended. Try to travel discreetly and avoid excessive posting on social media to preserve the tranquility. Here, there are no crowds, only mountains, terraced fields, and pristine villages. It's perfect for those who want to completely unwind and avoid popular tourist attractions. I sincerely hope it can remain peaceful forever.

Just got back from Longhui, two days and one night. Soaked in the water during the day, covered with a quilt at night. Truly a natural air-conditioned room worth the trip. 📍Basic overview Shaoyang Longhui County Tiger Mountain Yao Ethnic Township, 95% forest coverage, featuring waterfalls + terraced fields + ancient villages. The main scenic area is free, perfect for families, couples, or self-driving travelers to cool off and explore. 🗺️Itinerary Day 1 → Wangxi waterfall (enter from the exit) → Datuoshi waterfall → Baishuidong terraced fields → Chongmudang ancient village → Tip: Entering Wangxi waterfall from the exit saves 1 hour of hiking. The Longguojiang section is the most stunning. Remember to wear non-slip shoes. ✨Highlights Waterfall cluster with a drop of 100 meters, water droplets hitting your neck feel amazing; stone waterfall like a pouring Milky Way, perfect for drone shots; terraced fields stacked 600 meters high, ancient village shaded by thousand-year-old trees. The route is straightforward without detours, suitable for moderate fitness levels. 🍜Local specialties Firewood smoked bacon (old stove aroma), pig blood balls dipped in spicy fire-roasted chili (street stall), honeysuckle jelly (next to the scenic entrance, a must-have for cooling off). 🏨Accommodation recommendations 1. Homestays near the scenic area: Tiger Mountain Yunqi Inn (5-minute walk to the waterfall viewing platform, the owner guides you to avoid crowds) 2. City hotels: Longhui Vienna International Hotel (next to the high-speed rail station, convenient for transfers, hearty breakfast) 🎒Travel essentials 1. Protection: sun hat, quick-dry clothes, mosquito repellent spray 2. Small carry-ons: power bank, lightweight raincoat, portable water bottle 💡Practical tips 1. Self-driving is best. After arriving at Longhui station by high-speed rail, take a taxi for about 40 minutes. The mountain road has many curves, drive slowly. 2. The waterfall area is slippery after rain, avoid wearing slippers; don’t get too close to the cliff when photographing the stone waterfall. 3. The terraced fields have the softest light at sunset. The ancient village is less crowded after 4 PM, great for photos. 4. Respect Yao customs. Do not climb or carve on ancient trees or stone tablets. Take your trash with you. When the mountain breeze blows, all worries fade away. This trip was worth it. I’ll come again next time.

Accustomed to undertaking tasks independently, while continuously honing individual execution skills, we are prone to developing a rigid, individualistic mindset, resulting in somewhat stiff team communication and a lack of natural, smooth collaboration. This team building trip took us to Chongmutang Huayao Village, nestled amidst ancient fir trees, where we explored and wandered among the minority communities, cultivating team spirit through mutual support and companionship. Chongmutang Ancient Village, founded in the Yuan Dynasty, is the ancestral home of the Huayao people. Thousands of ancient fir trees stand tall and verdant, and wooden houses are arranged in tiers along the mountainside, preserving the original Huayao customs such as embroidery and folk songs. Hidden atop Tiger-shaped Mountain, the village is surrounded by winding mountain paths and terraced fields, far removed from the hustle and bustle of tourists. Morning mist often shrouds the mountains, exuding a pristine rural atmosphere. We explored the village in small groups, dividing tasks autonomously and cooperating flexibly. Some identified the intricate mountain routes, others recorded details of ancient architecture and folk customs, capturing joyful moments, while still others kept track of the group's pace. The mountain paths branched off frequently, and occasionally we lost our way. But instead of getting anxious or complaining, we huddled together to exchange clues, make joint judgments, and quickly adjust our route. When we encountered steep slopes or slippery muddy paths, we reached out to each other for support and gave way to one another. We chatted along the way, shedding the formalities of office communication, and our interactions became increasingly natural and smooth. This journey made us realize that there are limits to working alone; understanding the importance of mutual support, complementarity, and timely communication allows a team to unleash its full potential. Through this experience, our teamwork has improved significantly. In the future, facing various challenges, we are confident that we can support each other, work together to overcome obstacles, and journey hand in hand to distant mountains and seas. #travel2026

🚄 Take the high-speed train from Changsha directly to Xupu South Station. Upon exiting the station, seamlessly transfer to the Xuefeng Mountain Cable Car 🚠—this 7,600m cable car is the world's longest alpine cable car, climbing a 1,158m vertical drop in 40 minutes! Watching the terraced fields and sea of clouds flowing beneath you from the cable car, with mountain ranges and canyons in full view, it really feels like riding a "train in the clouds." The upper cable car station leads directly to the Huxingshan Great Huayao Scenic Area. The whole process is unbelievably smooth! 🏡 For accommodation, I chose **Yunduan Hexi**. The food here is super good; I ate Huangjing stewed chicken every day, starting a healthy culinary journey. At night, the mountain air is truly cool as water—air conditioning is completely unnecessary! Outside the window are mountain views and terraced fields. Waking up to birdsong and morning mist is so healing~ There are so many things to do during the day: 🌿 **Chongmudang Ancient Tree Forest** is a must-visit! The 3.8-hectare ancient tree cluster has 28 trees over 300 years old, with the oldest being **over 1,000 years old**. The Huayao people regard the ancient trees as gods. It's so cool under the shade that you won't want to leave. Renting a set of **Huayao clothing in the village only costs 30–40 yuan**! The Yao Spring, the square, and the paths through the rice paddies are all perfect for photos. 💧 **Wangxi Waterfall Group** is a five-tiered waterfall, cascading down from a cliff dozens of meters high. The mist hitting your face is super refreshing. Standing in front of the waterfall, you'll be truly stunned into silence! 🧵 Huayao cross-stitch is a **national-level intangible cultural heritage**. The owner invited Huayao ladies to the homestay to teach us cross-stitch. While we stitched, we learned the Yao language and sang Yao folk songs with them. It was a very immersive intangible cultural heritage experience! 🍵 The Huayao tea-producing area is located on high-altitude terraces at 600–1,200m, surrounded by clouds and mist, with selenium-rich soil. Go to the tea plantation to pick and make tea yourself, then drink a cup of "Hujiu Wuyu Tea" you made yourself. The mountain breeze paired with the tea aroma is amazing~ 🛁 After walking all day, soak in a **Yao bath**; the alpine Yao medicinal herbs soak away all your fatigue. At night, the temperature drops to **around 21°C**. Lying in the homestay courtyard, you can look up and see a sky full of stars ✨ 🌙 The highlight is the **"Village Evening" stage in the clouds**! The evening party takes place right in the scenic area at an altitude of 1,350m, featuring performances of the municipal-level intangible cultural heritage Meishan martial arts and original Huayao singing. The best surprise is that **tourists can go on stage** to perform together: "Huayao village is so cool, let's have fun at the happy village evening"~ The atmosphere of villagers and tourists partying on the same stage is amazing! 📌 Tips: · The average altitude of the scenic area is 1,350m, and the maximum summer temperature **does not exceed 27°C**. · There is a large temperature difference between day and night, so remember to bring a jacket. · For self-driving, navigate to "Great Huayao Huxingshan Scenic Area". · There is a **discount on the cable car for Huaihua and Shaoyang residents**, at 80 yuan/person for a round trip. It's not enough time to see everything; I've already started planning my second visit!!

Everyone says taking kids out during summer vacation is a “trial by fire” — crowded places, scorching sun, and an empty wallet. But this year, I’m doing the opposite — I found several spots within a 2-hour high-speed train ride, with average temperatures around 25℃, and costs even cheaper than a weekend trip to the mall. No need to look at those so-called “summer paradises.” Come with me and see the real experience. 01 Yili | Xinjiang If your impression of Xinjiang is still “too far” or “too expensive,” Yili will change your mind. In July, the Yili River Valley is at its greenest, with a cool grassy scent in the air. Daytime temperatures are in the 20s Celsius, and you’ll need a jacket at night. I recommend visiting the Kalajun Grassland in the morning — fewer people, strong winds, and kids can roll around on the grassy slopes. Don’t push it in the afternoon; head back to your guesthouse for a nap, then go out again around 5 PM when the light is at its best. 📍It’s about a 40-minute drive from Tekesi County. The roads are good, and kids prone to motion sickness should sit in the front seat. ⚠️There’s no shade on the grassland, so bring lightweight long sleeves and a hat. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen. 🍜 The local Kazakh yogurt dumplings are refreshingly sour. Kids might not love them, but the handmade yogurt is so good they’ll drink two big bowls for just 5 yuan each. If you want to visit Turgen Apricot Blossom Valley, it only blooms in spring, so skip it in summer. Along the Gongnaisi Grassland, there are streams where you can stop and let kids splash around. The water is icy cold, but kids can play for an hour without wanting to leave. 02 Xianning | Hubei Xianning is a hidden gem in the high-speed train circle — just a half-hour from Wuhan, with summer temperatures around 27–28℃, mountains and water, and unbelievably low costs. I took the kids straight to the Chibi Ancient Battlefield, which isn’t just cold stone monuments but climbable walls and walkable boardwalks. ⏰ I suggest arriving right when it opens at 8 AM — fewer people and the sun isn’t too strong yet. Kids don’t know the Three Kingdoms stories? No worries. The breeze by the river is pleasant, and they’ll run around on their own. 🍜 For lunch, head to the street outside the battlefield entrance. There’s a small place called “Old Chibi Fish Restaurant” where fish head stewed with tofu is fresh and MSG-free, all for 40 yuan a pot. ⚠️ Don’t go at 2 PM — the sun is brutal, and there’s little shade in the scenic area. Bring an umbrella. On the way back, stop by Xianning city for a hot spring soak. There are summer specials at 50 yuan per person. Kids can play in the water while you relax and scroll on your phone — this is what summer vacation should be. 03 Hanzhong | Shaanxi Hanzhong is my personal top pick for “cool and affordable.” From June to August, the average temperature is 5–6 degrees cooler than Xi’an, with the whole city filled with mist from the Han River. I took the kids to the Shimen plank road first — the ancient plank road hidden on a cliff. It has steps but isn’t too steep. If your kid gets tired after a short walk, don’t worry. There’s a platform halfway with a direct view of the river, where the wind is strong enough to blow hats off. Kids can watch boats there for half an hour. 📍It’s about a 20-yuan taxi ride from downtown. In the afternoon, head to the Ancient Han Platform, an indoor museum with air conditioning and walls covered in Han dynasty stone carvings. Kids might not understand, but it’s fun and, most importantly, cool. ⚠️ Book in advance on the official account. It’s free but closed on Mondays. Don’t go back to the hotel at dusk; go straight to the Han River bank. Many locals fly kites along the riverbank. 🍜 By the river, there’s a big food stall called “Han River Fishing Port.” Their hot noodle skin costs 3 yuan a bowl, with a sour and spicy flavor. My kid loved it so much, he ordered a second bowl. 04 Shaoyang | Hunan Langshan sounds far, but it’s actually a 2-hour high-speed train ride from Changsha to Shaoyang, then a 1.5-hour bus ride. In summer, Langshan is a natural air-conditioned room. The valley is filled with the sound of flowing water, and the air feels moist. I chose the “Chili Peak–Tianyi Alley” route. First, see the chili-shaped rock mountain. Kids will point and say, “That’s so weird.” Then squeeze through Tianyi Alley, a narrow lane only wide enough for one person. The stone walls block the sun completely, making it feel like stepping into a refrigerator. ⚠️ Strollers are useless here — it’s all stairs. You’ll need a baby carrier and your kid’s legs. 🍜 At the foot of the mountain, there’s a “Langshan Local Cuisine” restaurant. Their spicy duck blood is spicy but fragrant. If your kid can’t handle spice, order stir-fried mountain bamboo shoots — crisp and tender, 10 yuan a big plate. If it rains, don’t worry. The misty Langshan after rain looks even better than on sunny days, and it’s cool enough to need a jacket. On the way back to Shaoyang, stop by Xiaosha River Town in Longhui County. It’s an ancient Huayao village with stone paths and wooden houses, very off the beaten path but worth the detour for the scenery. 05 Fangchenggang | Guangxi Fangchenggang is the guardian of summer’s low end — cheap, uncrowded, and clean seawater. Don’t go to Beihai where it’s packed. Fangchenggang’s coastal road is like a linear park. Go at 5 PM, and the sea breeze will make you not want to leave. I stayed two nights with the kids in Leshan Ancient Fishing Village, an undeveloped old village with stone houses and alleys narrow enough for only three-wheeled vehicles. 📍It’s about a 50-yuan taxi ride from Fangchenggang North Station. Don’t go to the beach during the day to avoid sunburn. Kids can chase chickens and watch fishing nets in the alleys all afternoon. ⏰ The tide goes out at 6 PM. Rent a small shovel to dig for sea creatures. Every crab hole you dig has a catch, and the kids scream with excitement. 🍜 The fishing village has a place called “Grandma’s Seafood.” Their steamed grouper costs 60 yuan and is so fresh it’ll make your eyebrows fall off. ⚠️ Fangchenggang has occasional summer showers. Bring a raincoat. The rain comes fast and leaves fast, and the sun comes out afterward. 06 Yanbian | Jilin The summer feel in Yanbian is amazing — 23–24℃, dry, and not stuffy. I headed straight to Liuding Mountain Cultural Tourism Area, where a giant Buddha sits surrounded by mountains, creating an impressive scene. ⏰ I recommend going in the morning. Sunlight filters through the leaves, casting golden spots on the steps. There aren’t many steps, and it takes less than 20 minutes to reach the Buddha’s feet. Kids can walk it on their own. ⚠️ There’s a shuttle in the scenic area. Families with small kids can take it for 10 yuan per person. 🍜 After descending, go to Dunhua city for cold noodles. A bowl costs 15 yuan, with a sweet and sour flavor, icy cold. My kid slurped half a bowl in one go. Yanbian city is also very comfortable. In the afternoon, visit the “internet-famous wall” opposite Yanbian University. It’s covered with bilingual signs, and kids will think “these characters look like circles.” In the evening, stroll along the Burhatong River with the kids. The riverside path is smooth, perfect for balance bikes. You walk while the fresh forest scent fills the air. 07 Zhongwei | Ningxia Is Zhongwei hot in summer? Only for two hours at noon. Early mornings and evenings are pure heaven. I switched to a “night owl mode” with the kids: leaving at 8 AM to go to Shapotou. The sand isn’t fully heated yet, so it’s warm but not hot underfoot. We slid down the sand dunes from the top, the wind roaring in our ears. The kids were so excited they slid three times in a row. ⚠️ Make sure kids wear sunglasses. The sand’s glare is harsh. 🍜 At noon, head back to the city for stir-fried tripe with pickled cabbage near Gaomiao Bao’an Temple. It’s a perfect dish for rice, costing 20 yuan a serving. ⏰ After 3 PM, the sun starts to lean west. Visit Gaomiao Bao’an Temple, a Ming and Qing dynasty architectural complex. The steps are narrow, but kids love crawling through the small doorways like explorers. Watch the sunset by the Yellow River in the evening. The water turns golden, and kids will quietly lean on you to watch the whole sunset. 08 Haidong | Qinghai Haidong’s advantage is its moderate altitude — just over 2,000 meters, with little altitude sickness. I took the kids to Huzhu Tu Ethnic Homeland Park, a Tu culture village with colorful houses and walls covered in various patterns. The kids shouted, “It looks like a fairy tale town” as soon as they entered. ⏰ I recommend going in the morning to catch the Tu ethnic song and dance performances. The performers swing their sleeves and spin, and the kids imitate them, making everyone laugh. 🍜 For lunch, try the Tu specialty “dog urine cake” — actually a type of fried dough, crispy and fragrant. The kids ate three pieces in one sitting. In the afternoon, visit Youning Temple, a Tibetan Buddhist temple hidden in a valley. It’s so quiet you can only hear the wind and bells. ⚠️ The temple is at 2,600 meters altitude. Don’t run or jump; walk slowly. ⚠️ You can also visit nearby Beishan National Forest Park, which has a “Twelve Turns” road winding up the mountain. Every turn offers a new view. It’s so off the beaten path there are almost no tourists, but the scenery is definitely worth the detour. Haidong’s prices are also very reasonable. A bowl of beef noodles costs 8 yuan, and a day of food and lodging for kids is under 100 yuan per person. vacation the beaten path travel gems

Advance booking is recommended for the Huayao embroidery experience, as it gets very crowded during holidays. 4. No large supermarkets or shopping malls along the route; snacks and drinking water can be purchased at the guesthouse.

🌿 Suining · Huangsang National Nature Reserve 💰 Budget reference: 2–3 days, 3 people, CNY 400–650 per person (Huangsangping Township B&B CNY 200–500/night, spring water chicken soup + stir-fried fern with cured meat CNY 50–80 per person, Xiongshi River Grand Canyon free, Liue Cave Waterfall free admission, Huangsang Rafting CNY 88/person, 3h drive from Changsha/3h drive from Shaoyang city) 🎯 Recommended attractions · Xiongshi River Grand Canyon: Hundreds of meters vertical drop + natural swimming pool with water temperature of 18℃. Jumping in instantly refreshes you, more therapeutic than any trendy photo spot. · Liue Cave Waterfall: 40-meter drop, "white silk on a green carpet." Walk through the forest to avoid the sun. · Shangbao Ancient Kingdom: 500 mu of terraced fields surrounding Dong ethnic wooden houses, "Hunan's version of Tang'an" but without the crowds. Market days (check local announcements) are the liveliest. · Huangsang Rafting: CNY 88 per person for a bamboo raft, not thrilling. A leisurely stream drift, water temperature 20℃, cool to the wrist when you put your hand in. ✨ Reasons for recommendation Huangsang is the "wildest + coolest" of the four—average summer temperature 21℃, negative oxygen ions 160,000/cm³ (300 times that of cities), and a forest coverage rate of 78%, making it one of "China's most beautiful subtropical forests." B&B rooms don't have air conditioning because it's not needed; you even need a thin quilt at night. This is heavenly data for the "furnace" regions of central and southern Hunan in July and August. Reminder: Mobile signal is spotty in Huangsang mountainous areas, download offline maps in advance; B&B booking rates tripled last year during summer, book two weeks in advance; the CNY 88 rafting is a bamboo raft, not rapids, suitable for kids. · ----- 🌸 Longhui · Huxingshan-Huayao Scenic Area 💰 Budget reference: 2–3 days, 3 people, CNY 300–500 per person (Chongmudang/Huxingshan Township B&B CNY 150–300/night, cured meat + pig blood sausage + rice wine CNY 40 per person, Wangxi Waterfall about CNY 40, no main entrance fee for the entire area! Only single-point charges, high-speed rail to Longhui Station + 2h bus ride into the mountains) 🎯 Recommended attractions · Wangxi Waterfall Group: Five consecutive waterfalls, with Longguojiang as the main waterfall. The canyon stream tracing water temperature is 20℃. It's easier to enter from the exit and walk down. There are sections suitable for kids to play in the water. · Chongmudang Ancient Village: "China's First Huayao Village," with ancient fir trees (1,800 years old) + stilt houses + Huayao embroidery (national intangible cultural heritage). Experience the welcoming wine and long table banquet. · Datou Stone Waterfall: A giant granite cliff, thousands of meters wide and hundreds of meters high, a "solidified stone waterfall." Impressive from an aerial view, free. · Yunshang Terraces (Baishuidong/Wanguanchong): Water-filled mirror-like fields in May–June, golden in September–October. In July–August, they are emerald green + a summer retreat. The morning mist is stunning. ✨ Reasons for recommendation Huxingshan offers the best value for money among the four—no main entrance fee for the entire area. Wangxi is CNY 40, while Chongmudang/Datou Stone Waterfall/terraces are all free. The Xuefeng Mountain plateau has an average temperature of 22℃, where "clouds are at your feet, and you are above the clouds." Huayao culture is an added value, with embroidery + folk songs + wedding customs, much more authentic than commercialized Miao villages. Longhui's "three spicy dishes" + pig blood sausage + cured meat are all excellent with rice. Reminder: It's easier to enter Wangxi from the exit and walk down; don't climb hard from the entrance; bring a light jacket for the large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains; respect Huayao customs, ask grandmas for permission before taking photos. · ----- 🏔️ Dongkou · Luoxi National Forest Park ("Southern Little Tibet") 💰 Budget reference: 2–3 days, 3 people, CNY 350–550 per person (Luoxi Yao Township B&B CNY 150–280/night, Yao family local dishes + Gongxi River fish CNY 45 per person, park free admission, rafting extra about CNY 120–150, 2.5h drive from Huaihua/Shaoyang into the mountains) 🎯 Recommended attractions · Gongxi River Grand Canyon + Longtou Sandiao Waterfall Group: In the heart of Xuefeng Mountain, 94% forest coverage, average altitude 1,200m, known as "Southern Little Tibet," with waterfalls connecting waterfalls. · Luoxi Ecological Rafting: Rubber boats + battling rapids + navigating shoals, "the thrill of a roller coaster + the joy of playing in water." A must-do in summer. · Baoyao Village Ancient Village: Ancient Yao village + Red Army Bridge, a leisurely stroll. ✨ Reasons for recommendation Luoxi is the most "underestimated" of the four—located in the western part of Dongkou County, in the heart of Xuefeng Mountain, with an average altitude of 1,200m, slightly higher than Huangsang. With 94% forest coverage + crisscrossing streams and rivers, it's a gem even many Shaoyang locals might not fully know about. It's wilder than Huangsang, cooler than Huxingshan, and closer to Huaihua than Yunshan. Rafting is its killer feature; for rubber boats, choose the gentle section if you have kids (ask the owner), the rapids section is for the brave. Reminder: The last section of the mountain road into Luoxi has many curves, bring motion sickness medicine; bring a change of clothes + a waterproof bag for rafting, don't wear flip-flops (they might get washed away). · ----- 🏯 Wugang · Yunshan National Forest Park ("Chunan Scenic Spot" 69th Blessed Land) 💰 Budget reference: 2 days, 1 night, 3 people, CNY 350–600 per person (B&B at the foot of Yunshan CNY 200–400/night, Wugang braised dishes + blood duck CNY 50 per person, admission ticket CNY 42/person, children/seniors CNY 22.5, mountain top camping + night climbing launched in July) 🎯 Recommended attractions · Shengli Temple + Luhou Palace: Taoism and Buddhism coexist. The "69th Blessed Land" where Luhou and Ersheng of the Qin Dynasty collected herbs and refined elixirs. Shengli Temple was the center of Buddhism in southwestern Hunan during the Song Dynasty, and incense still burns there today. · Banshanchong Waterfall Group + Yipu Feitao: Play in the forest streams, cool to the touch when you step barefoot into the spring. · Zixiaofeng Baoding: 1,372.5m, the best spot to view the sea of clouds. The highest probability of reaching the summit is between 6–8 AM. · Mountain top camping (opened during Dragon Boat Festival) + new night climbing in July: Check into a starry sky campsite with just your bags, lie down and watch the Milky Way + sea of clouds sunrise. Cable car is also being promoted after Mango Culture and Tourism moved in. ✨ Reasons for recommendation Yunshan is the most "cultural + relaxing" of the four—1,372m, average summer temperature 23.2℃. Its reputation as "Chunan Scenic Spot" is older than Moganshan, but it has only one-tenth of Moganshan's crowds. Shengli Temple + Luhou Palace offer dual cultivation of Taoism and Buddhism, with playing in Banshanchong, the sea of clouds at Zixiaofeng, and mountain top camping all in one package. Night climbing launched in July, suitable for young people; for seniors, the gentle sections of Banshanchong + Shengli Temple are enough. Wugang's braised tofu + braised pig ears + blood duck are signature dishes of southwestern Hunan, and old shops on Xizhi Street are cheaper than those in the scenic area. Reminder: Yunshan camping is best in July during the Milky Way season, book in advance on the "Yunshan Tourism Resort" official WeChat account; bring a headlamp + light jacket for night climbing, it's about 14℃ on the mountain top in the early morning. · ----- ⚠️ Four options to choose from + general tips for Shaoyang trip · For 21℃ + wild + waterfall swimming pool → Suining Huangsang (coolest and wildest, 3h from Changsha) · For 0 main entrance fee + Huayao intangible cultural heritage → Longhui Huxingshan (ultimate value for money) · For Xuefeng Mountain heartland + rafting → Dongkou Luoxi ("Southern Little Tibet") · For Taoist and Buddhist blessed land + new mountain top camping → Wugang Yunshan (most relaxing and cultural) General tip for avoiding summer heat in Shaoyang: The four spots are spread across four different counties, don't try to visit two in one day. It's best to stay one night in Huangsang + Suining County, one night in Huxingshan + Longhui, one night in Luoxi + Dongkou, and one night in Yunshan + Wugang, each as a 2-day trip. The reason not to join a tour group for your first visit is this—a "Shaoyang Panorama X-day" tour will just cram Langshan/Nanshan/other famous spots together, rushing through, and places like Huangsang and Luoxi, which require a slow stay, won't be included in the itinerary. Take the high-speed rail to Shaoyang Station/Longhui Station/Dongkou Station, then self-drive or carpool locally for the most freedom 🌿
