Shantou, or Shantou City, was a city we'd never heard of before. We decided to visit for the first time by chance, so we booked everything – flights and hotels – through Trip.com. We went from July 4th to 7th. We were very lucky; we returned on the last day before a storm hit, and while it rained on our way back, it was very sunny during our trip. Before the trip, I have absolutely no plan in mind. All I prepared was filling out the online arrival card and Alipay for spending in Shantou. Since Shantou doesn't have an airport, we had to book flights to and from Chaoshan Jieyang Airport. Our accommodation was about 37 kilometers from the airport. There's a high-speed train from the airport to Shantou, but we arrived late. So, we used Didi, which cost around 80-90 yuan (excluding toll fees). Since we arrived late, and by the time we got through immigration and everything else, it was almost 11 pm, the Didi driver asked for another 40 yuan for the return trip, payable to him via Weixin. At that time, I had a stomach ache, was tired and very sleepy, and too lazy to haggle. 😬 I just wanted to be taken to the hotel (luckily, I had some New Year's money saved on Weixin 🧧). The hotel we stayed at was a hostel-style hotel, run by the owner. When checking in, they only checked our passports and booking confirmations and gave us the key card. The hotel has 4 floors and no elevator. Luckily, we were on the 2nd floor 😅 But the hotel's location was excellent, right in the heart of every tourist spot in the city. It was surrounded by restaurants, convenience stores, and coffee shops. We walked around without getting tired. Most shops emphasized verbal ordering, but they also accepted Alipay and Weixin payments. A must-try dish is the beef meatballs (I usually don't eat beef, but I had to try them). They were delicious, even though they weren't suitable for my stomach 🤣 The food prices weren't too expensive, around 20-40 yuan, but we have a habit of not eating just one dish; we always need side dishes. Each order cost 48 yuan, plus water. On the day of departure, I initially planned to take the train to the airport. The train station is 25 kilometers from the hotel, but it was raining, so I called a Didi taxi again. The cost of calling a taxi was: 117 yuan on the way there + an extra 40 yuan paid. 107 yuan on the way back, no extra charges 😅 Total expenses: airfare, hotel, transportation, food, souvenirs, totaling approximately 13,000 Thai baht. Right at the entrance, the couplet on the door caught my eye 📜: “How to obtain three thousand carts of rare books to entertain this white head, then plant a hundred thousand famous flowers to adorn this green mountain.” Just from the words, you can tell the owner has great literary taste! The entire manor is built along the mountain, layered and stacked. Walking inside, winding paths lead to secluded spots, surrounded by lush trees, and the air is filled with the fragrance of plants 🌳. The most amazing part is its “one to nine” design ingenuity! One small door, two layers of walls, three main buildings, four gates… even seven ponds and eight pavilions are all arranged neatly and correspond perfectly ✨. Every step reveals a new scene.
