Unlike the bustling atmosphere of Osaka city, this place encourages a slower pace of walking and relaxation. As soon as you enter the park, deer will naturally approach you. The most fascinating thing was seeing the deer bow their heads as if greeting you. When holding snacks, they bow once or twice, which was truly surprising at first. 🇯🇵 Did you know that Nara was the first official capital of Japan in the 8th century? For 74 years, this city was the center of the empire, Buddhism, and art. From here, culture, writing, and laws spread across the country. Later, the capital was moved, and Nara fell into a slumber, preserving its treasures almost untouched. Today, it is an open-air museum city. Here’s how I spent my day in this ancient capital: 🔸 I headed straight to Nara Park to meet its famous and cheeky residents—the deer. They are considered sacred animals here and roam freely throughout the city. 🔸 A stroll through the Naramachi district. Absorbing the atmosphere of the old quarters. I was completely alone here. Quiet residential streets, ponds, and temples without a single visitor. 🔸 Next, a wonderful pond surrounded by crimson maples, with the elegant Ukimido Pavilion in the center. Here, I met a lovely Japanese woman painting the surrounding scenery in watercolor. 🔸 Kasuga-taisha, the Shrine of Lanterns, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its avenue of 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns creates a sense of time travel. And between the lanterns, deer occasionally peek out. 🔸 By lunchtime, I was hungry and stopped by a charming place—Mizuya Chaya. This is a small traditional-style restaurant. It’s quite popular, with limited seating, so people often sit outside. And it’s a very pleasant experience. Eating delicious udon in the fresh air—what could be better? Just a tip 🫣—keep an eye on your belongings. The ever-present deer are always trying to snatch something or sneak into your plate. 🔸 Next, I visited Tamukeyama Shrine. There aren’t many tourists here, and the views from the hill are stunning. 🔸 Todai-ji. A grand temple built during Nara’s golden age. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Seeing the giant Buddha Daibutsu in the world’s largest wooden building is like stepping back into that era of grandeur. You truly feel like a grain of sand here. And yes, I did crawl through the Buddha’s nostril 😄 🔸 At the end of the day, I stopped by Sanjo-dori shopping street. I browsed the shops and picked up some souvenirs from wonderful Nara. Nara is not just the city of deer. It’s a living history book. Incredibly colorful, beautiful, cozy, and fascinating.

Nara actually not only has a street of deer to make you cute, but also some quiet and healing corners, like the Tang Chao Ti Temple we visited this time. I wonder if any of you, like me, have been to Nara several times but have never walked the temple? This time I finally grabbed the opportunity and found out that the transportation of Tang Chao Ti Temple is super convenient and not crowded. It has a completely different flavor from Nara Park, which is so crowded and noisy! Tang Zhaoti Temple: A thousand years of Zen in tranquility When you walk to Tang Chao Ti Temple, the first thing you feel is peace and quiet. There is a large grove of trees at the entrance of the temple, the sun is shining from the gaps in the trees, and the breeze is quite comfortable. Chinese-style architectural style, antique, paired with a sunny day in Nara, the view of architecture and nature blending is impressive. The temple does not have as many tourists as other Nara attractions, and it is perfect for a quiet stroll whether you love taking pictures or want to feel Japanese Zen. 🦌 Explore small shops outside the temple: Not only the temple, but also several nearby small shops can dig for treasures - there are many deer ornaments, the packaging design is stunned and textured. Some are handmade ceramics, and some packaging boxes are designed with a Japanese-style deer pattern, which is super healing to put on your desk in small pieces. The shop carefully marked the price of about 660-880 yen each, which is a price that can be safely started! This is a great option if you want to bring back Japanese souvenirs. 🌳Architecture, Humanities & Nature: The monastery architecture stands quietly under the shade of trees, with close-up views of wooden structural details and distant views of the tree surround, feel and surroundings blending in one. Walking in the outer garden area on a sunny day, the sun is shining, it feels like time is slowing down. Even if you don't particularly believe in Buddhism, it's still worth a visit to feel the thousand years of Zen. ⚡ Trip Tips: After experiencing it firsthand, I highly recommend this attraction. It's really quiet and comfortable! The temple does not have too many signs, everything creates a tranquil atmosphere with a sense of space, suitable for strolling and relaxing. Very convenient access: about 15-20 minutes by bus from Nara Station, suitable for half-day itinerary arrangements. The temple is open from 08:30–17:00. 🍵 Food Supplement: There are not many restaurants near the temple, but out of the temple towards the main road, there are 2 teahouses where you can try Nara matcha and wagashi, exquisite and authentic. 📍Travel Introduction A very fulfilling 2-night, 3-day trip to Osaka in July. 🚩Travel Route Day 1: Arrive at Kansai Airport -> Transfer to Nara 1️⃣Feed the deer at Nara Park - For 100 yen, you can feed the deer. There are tons of them, and they're more active than you'd expect. The crowds can be scary 😂 If you try to pose in a photo, it's like a sign saying, "No more!" But it's actually a deer-by-deer experience! -The mochi from the most famous mochi shop in Nara Park!! I didn't like it. 2️⃣Todaiji Temple Following Nara Park, you'll come across Todaiji Temple, but there's an entrance fee! I skipped it because it was too hot. 3️⃣Orange Japanese Homestyle Cafe It was so hot that we stopped by a cafe near the park. I randomly stopped in at a spot I saw, so I was content just to escape the heat. But for dessert, the lemonade, coffee jelly latte, and chocolate cake were ⭐️4/10, not all that great~ 4️⃣ Taking a picture with the Namba Glico sign and exploring Namba. 5️⃣ Sushi at Tsutenkaku. It was a sushi place located at the very back of Tsutenkaku. There was no wait! The taste was ⭐️7/10. You have to order on a tablet, so a translator is essential. Tsutenkaku has a beautiful night view!! I recommend seeing the night view before you go! 6️⃣ Mega Don Quijote. After dinner, we went to Namba and went to Don Quijote. It's a place that always catches my eye, no matter how many times I visit. I always buy sweet potato spread (it's seriously insanely delicious), eye drops, and Kiss Me products☺️ 💡This is a travel itinerary that involves walking over 20,000 steps a day. 🚗Transportation: From Kintetsu Nara Station, follow the signs to reach Nara Park, Todai-ji Temple, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and other must-visit attractions. There are vendors along the way selling deer crackers for 200 yen per pack. For those who are afraid of being surrounded or bumped by deer, it is recommended not to buy them. Even without deer crackers, you can still take photos with the deer. Lastly, I recommend the souvenir shops in the shopping street near Kintetsu Nara Station. They have delicious red bean cakes and black soybean tea.

Kyoto’s wind is bone-chilling, some temples shorten their opening hours in winter, climbing the thousand torii gates at Fushimi Inari Taisha is cold and tiring, and accommodations in the hot spring towns need to be booked well in advance😮‍💨! But when the red walls of Kiyomizu-dera are covered in snow, the Arashiyama bamboo forest is dusted with fine snowflakes, and you soak in a hot spring while watching the snowy scenery outside the window, the tranquility and Zen spirit of this ancient city can truly make you forget all your fatigue～ -- 🌬️ Recent weather and dressing advice Kyoto’s temperature ranges from 3 to 8°C, with occasional light snow. The wind in the mountains is strong, making it feel even colder. Dress to “block wind + keep warm”: wear a thin moisture-wicking base layer, a wool sweater or thick knitwear as a middle layer, and a thick windproof and waterproof outer jacket; for bottoms, choose fleece-lined pants or thin down pants, paired with mid-cut non-slip shoes—avoid high heels; accessories should include a warm hat, thick scarf, and waterproof gloves. The Sagano Scenic Railway operates normally in winter. It’s recommended to reserve your seat in advance, with window seats offering better views; 4. When soaking in hot springs, follow etiquette: shower and clean your body before entering the bath, and don’t soak for too long—15 to 20 minutes is enough; 5. Many people visit Nara while traveling between Osaka and Kyoto with luggage. Don’t worry, Nara Station has many luggage storage lockers, really very convenient. - ⏰ 8:00 Depart from Osaka or Kyoto by JR. - ⏰ 8:40 Arrive at Kintetsu Nara Station, store luggage. - ⏰ 9:10 Arrive at Kofuku-ji Temple This ancient temple with a strong sense of history is a World Cultural Heritage site. 🕘 9:00-17:00 - ⏰ 9:40 Arrive at Nara National Museum History and Buddhist art lovers don’t miss this, the collection is very rich. 🕘 9:30-17:00 - ⏰ 10:30 Arrive at Todai-ji Temple Nara’s landmark building, a World Cultural Heritage site, one of Japan’s three great Buddhist temples. The 1,200-year-old Great Buddha Hall is very spectacular. 🕘 8:30-17:30 - ⏰ 12:00 Exit Todai-ji to Nara Park; an open, free park with many deer, great for photos. - ⏰ 12:30 Lunch. There are some restaurants and souvenir shops around Nara Park. You can also eat first and then take photos in the park. - ⏰ 14:00 Go to Kasuga Taisha Shrine, the vermilion shrine buildings are very eye-catching. The deer here roam in the woods and around the Buddhist altars, very lively. 🕘 6:30-17:30 - ⏰ 16:00 Pass by Mizutani Chaya A small hut hidden in the woods, great for photos. It’s green in spring and summer, red leaves in autumn, very atmospheric. The teahouse is probably no longer in operation due to age, but it’s still nice to stop and take photos. - ⏰ 16:30 Arrive at Wakakusa-yama to wait for sunset The hillside is a large lawn with many deer, great for photos. The higher you go, the better the view. This is perfect for watching the sunset, very beautiful. In fact, by 3 or 4 pm, people are already sitting on the hillside waiting, enjoying the breeze, very healing. 🕘 9:00-17:00, no entry after 17:00, but those already inside can stay until after sunset.

This deer feeding trip in Nara was definitely the most therapeutic and chaotic highlight of the trip. ⸻ 🍘 First Stop: Buying Deer Crackers (Shika Senbei) – Available everywhere, super cheap at 200 yen a pack Shortly after entering Nara Park, you'll see small wooden stalls displaying stacks of deer crackers (Shika Senbei). The price is uniform at 200 yen per pack, no need to compare prices. 📌 Internet Trivia: Deer crackers are specially made for deer—"sugar-free, salt-free, and additive-free." Never feed them human food, especially bread, snacks, and children's crackers, as they are bad for deer. After buying deer crackers, nearby deer will suddenly "sniff" the bag in your hand like radar, and some will even quietly approach, as if waiting for your command. ⸻ 🙇♂️ The cutest phenomenon in Nara: Deer will "bow" at you!
