ancient horse road in Puer
The Tea and Horse Road of Southwest China, aka the " Silk Road of Southwest China" – but called Chamagudao in Chinese (cha-ma-gu-dao = Tea-Horse-Ancient-Road) – is an old trade route that stretched east to west and south to north across southwest China. This ancient trade routes eventually came to be renowned for the two main commodities for which the routes were named: tea and horses, though there were other important commodities such as sugar and salt – but curiously, not silk – that were traded along these routes. Our own Tea Horse Road adventure began in the township of Pu'er, approximately 400 kilometers south of Kunming. The excursion passed through some of the mountains and steep valleys that are signatures of the Yunnan landscape. Eventually, the corn and wheat along the roadside gave way to bananas, rubber and, eventually, tea.
Exploring Pu'er...🤗
The ancient town at Tea Horse Road is relatively easy to get to by taxi or private car, as Pu'er is a small place and this is easy to find. Arriving here, we took a nice stroll along the canal and through the scenic old town area, stopping for iced coffee and lunch also. Prices are not expensive here, even though this is considered a tourist site. The buildings were great to look at, as well as the old ancient walls that are built around the old town. We came just before Chinese New Year, therefore the place wasn't that busy, especially in the afternoon we visited. If you are in Pu'er, then it's definitely a place to visit along with the tea museum and seeing a plantation. You should go to the tea museum first and learn about the history of this place before visiting, as it enables you to appreciate the historical perspective of this place. 🍵👘😋

Yunnan Pu'er's "Ancient Tea-Horse Road City Tea-Horse Ancient Trail"
Lucky to have "Ancient Tea-Horse Road City" and "Tea-Horse Ancient Trail" right next to each other.
(It is recommended to walk the Tea-Horse Ancient Trail during the day and visit the Ancient Tea-Horse Road City at night)
The Ancient Tea-Horse Road City (free admission) is not recommended during the day, as many shops are closed and there's not much to see! After 6 pm, stalls will gradually set up, and it becomes very lively! Starting at 7 pm, there is a torch dance inside the ancient city, where tourists and local ethnic minorities dance around the torches together in the square, and there are also performances in ancient costumes.
The Tea-Horse Ancient Trail (free admission) is mainly about hiking, the mountain is not steep, and it's easy to walk! Inside there are electric cars, horseback riding, and cable cars, which require an additional fee. I hiked up and down the mountain the whole way, which took about three hours! Retracing the historical trail ruins to understand the history and culture of the Tea-Horse Ancient Trail.
Tea Horse Ancient Road | Yuan Yi Palace
❥ The signboard of Yuan Yi Palace reads: The history of the ancient road is fully visible. Pu'er tea is named after Pu'er Prefecture and is famous worldwide because of the Tea Horse Ancient Road. The Tea Horse Ancient Road, which runs through the Hengduan Mountains and the Himalayas as well as the Lancang River, Jinsha River, Nu River, Min River, Yaxi River, and Yarlung Tsangpo River, converges in Pu'er. From here, the extending Tea Horse Ancient Road offers charming scenery, diverse landscapes, and a combination of beautiful views and dangerous terrains, leaving people in awe.
❥ The exhibition hall is arranged in a simple and elegant manner, with soft indoor lighting and warm outdoor sunlight, making the journey leisurely and enjoyable. Between the two scenic spots, there is a section of stone mountain road, dense forests, and as you walk and enjoy the scenery, the sunshine, and the breeze, it's not tiring at all.
➠ Location: Pu'er Avenue, Simao District, Pu'er City, Yunnan Province (inside the Tea Horse Ancient Road Scenic Area).
The Ancient Tea Horse Road | Songming Pavilion
❥ Songming Pavilion, a bustling hub of trade, thrived with border commerce during the Song Dynasty. Frequent border conflicts led to a scarcity of warhorses, prompting the Dali Kingdom (present-day Yunnan) to establish a tea-for-horse exchange market in Buri (present-day Pu'er). This not only strengthened the regime but also bolstered the rear, proving to be a far-sighted strategy for border governance. Drift back to the bustling tea-horse trade market, tread the thousand-mile-long Ancient Tea Horse Road, and reminisce about the poignant stories of the horse caravans.
❥ Along the ancient trail, a ten-mile-long pavilion reflects the secluded orchids, while a half-acre gallery hides the wilderness charm. Beneath the blue sky and white clouds, atop the serene ancient path, a sense of delight abounds.

The Ancient Tea-Horse Road originated from the ancient tea-horse barter trade on the southwestern frontier, prospered during the Tang and Song dynasties, flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and reached its peak in the late period of World War II.
The Ancient Tea-Horse Road is divided into the Sichuan-Tibet and Yunnan-Tibet routes, connecting Sichuan, Yunnan, and Tibet, and extending into Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal, India, and all the way to the Red Sea coast of West Asia and West Africa.
The Yunnan-Tibet Ancient Tea-Horse Road was roughly formed in the late 6th century AD. It starts from the main tea-producing areas of Simao and Pu'er in Yunnan, passes through today's Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture and Lijiang area, enters Tibet through Shangri-La, and reaches Lhasa directly.
🌈 On the Ancient Tea-Horse Road in Pu'er City, walking up the mountain, there are many tea trees planted, and local tea farmers sell their own tea leaves. We bought two bags.
Living in Yunnan
Living in Yunnan
Puer is a quiet little city. When you stroll on the Shilong Road in May, it's a street of blooming phoenix flowers; when you step into Puer in November, it's the smoke from the ancient villages. In Puer, you can taste the refreshing and sweet aftertaste of Puer tea, with its fragrance lingering. People can taste the quiet and leisurely slow life in a cup of tea, or they can trek long distances to find the unique Puer world in each mountain, whether it's the worldly atmosphere of Jingmai Mountain or the martial arts world of Wuliang Mountain, they are all telling a different Puer story from the outside world. Such Puer, accompanied by the sound of horse hooves on the ancient tea-horse road, echoes the distant sound of the horse caravan years...
Ancient Tea Horse Road Scenic Area
The Puer Tea Horse Road Tourist Area is located in Puer City, Yunnan Province, the world's tea source, 5km away from the Puer North Expressway toll station, 2km away from the city center, adjacent to the provincial-level nighttime culture and tourism consumption cluster, namely the Tea Horse Ancient Town tourist town. The ancient Tea Horse Road site within the scenic area is an important section of the Tea Horse Road's north-south direction, the starting point for tribute tea to enter the capital, and to date, the most completely preserved, longest, culturally richest, and ecologically best section along the route. It is said that Simao is the starting point of the Tea Horse Road, and the Bajiao Slope Tea Horse Road has a history of more than 1800 years, which is still well preserved to this day. This former tea and salt official road extends northward through forests lush with vegetation, shaded by green trees, and filled with the chirping of birds, a natural oxygen bar that is enchanting. Perhaps because there are many spotted doves on the mountain, it was named Bajiao Slope Tea Horse Road. This ancient road is about 11 kilometers long, starting from the southern Simao Lamei Slope and reaching the foot of Simao Slope to the north. The foot of Simao Slope was once an important post station on the Tea Horse Road, a Yi ethnic village. In 2003, the Simao area was restructured into Simao City, the county-level Simao City was changed to Cuiyun District, and in January 2007, the former Simao City was renamed Puer City, and Cuiyun District was renamed Simao District. Simao District is the starting point of the historical Tea Horse Road—the Southern Silk Road, one of the three major customs towns in Yunnan, an important transportation hub and golden frontier for China's opening up to Southeast Asia and South Asia, and the core area of Puer's opening up to the outside world. The Puer Tea Horse Road Tourist Area is a 4A-level scenic spot, about a 15-minute drive from Puer Railway Station.

The Ancient Tea Horse Road of Pu'er
The Ancient Tea Horse Road refers to the commercial trade routes that have been used since the Tang Dynasty to meet the demands of the local people in the southwest and northwest regions of China, with tea leaves and horses as the main commodities traded, and horse caravans as the main mode of transportation. It is a corridor for economic and cultural exchanges among the ethnic groups in southwest China. The Ancient Tea Horse Road consists mainly of three major routes: the Sichuan-Tibet Road, the Yunnan-Tibet Road, and the Qinghai-Tibet Road (Gansu-Qinghai Road), supplemented by numerous branches and sub-routes, forming a vast transportation network that spans Shaanxi, Gansu, Guizhou, Sichuan, Yunnan, Qinghai, and Tibet, extending to South Asia, West Asia, Central Asia, and Southeast Asian countries. The existence of the Ancient Tea Horse Road has promoted the economic and cultural development of various ethnic groups, solidified their spirit, strengthened the unity among them, and served as a path of unity that promotes ethnic harmony and maintains border security. The Ancient Tea Horse Road is a witness to China's historical unity and a symbol of ethnic solidarity. In the Simao area, the Ancient Tea Horse Road radiates from Simao to all directions. To the east, there is the Xiaogantian Ancient Tea Horse Road leading to Jiangcheng, Vietnam, etc. To the south, there are the Longlong and Caiyang River Ancient Tea Horse Roads leading to Yiwu Ancient Tea Mountain, Laos, etc. To the west, there are the Zhengkongdu, Nuozhadu, Baimashan, and Dabingtun Ancient Tea Horse Roads crossing the Lancang River to Jingmai Ancient Tea Mountain, Bangwei Ancient Tea Trees, and Myanmar, etc. To the north, there is the Banjiupo Ancient Tea Horse Road leading to the inland, Tibet, India, etc. The Pu'er Ancient Tea Horse Road has become an important tourist attraction, drawing a large number of visitors to explore the historical charm of ancient trade. In today's world of bustling traffic, the caravan is no longer present, and the crisp sound of horse bells can no longer be heard in the mountains. The Tea Horse Trail has become even quieter. But the echoing sound of horse bells and the mountain songs of the horsemen are still fresh in memory: In March, on the third day of the third month, driving mules and horses into the tea mountains, Pu'er tea is loved by everyone, carrying tea leaves to faraway places.
The ancient tea gardens, ancient tea trees, ancient tea brands, old tea factories, ancient towns and markets, horse inns, ancient trails, ancient bridges, and other immovable cultural relics on the Tea Horse Trail, as well as movable cultural relics such as horse gear, tea utensils, weighing instruments, firearms, musical instruments, clothing, and the rich caravan system, artistic works, historical memories, and many other spiritual cultures, are all heritage worth cherishing.
