Nantang|Beijing's first cathedral is reopened with a strong Christmas atmosphere
The South Church, also known as the Xuanwumen Church, was built in the 33rd year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1605). It is the oldest Catholic church in Beijing. It has been closed for many years and is now reopened. ️Christmas 🧑🎄 is approaching, and the Christmas 🎄 atmosphere is very strong‼ ️According to the staff, there will be activities on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and the lights will be turned on at night after December 9th.
Initially, the South Church was just the first scripture hall built by Father Matteo Ricci, and it was very small in scale. Later, in the seventh year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1650), Father Johann Adam Schall von Bell, a German Jesuit, built the first cathedral in Beijing, with a construction area of about 1,300 square meters and ancillary buildings of about 400 square meters. In 1996, Nan Tang was listed as the fourth batch of "national protected sites".
🌈Highlights:
✅The South Hall has three courtyards. The main gate is a Chinese-style building. The east courtyard is the main building of the church, and the west courtyard is the residential building. The main building is in Baroque style. The facade is made of clear bricks and decorated with exquisite brick carvings. The top is an arched structure, and the doors and windows are inlaid with stained glass depicting religious stories.
✅There are four big characters "境、静、净、敬" on the base of the South Hall. There are three big doors on the ground floor and three arched windows on the middle floor. The doors and windows are decorated with protruding brick-carved flowers and leaves.
✅The lobby is rectangular in plan, with two rows of wooden columns dividing the lobby into the central hall and the side hall. The hall adopts a dome design, with colorful rose windows on both sides. It is beautifully decorated, and the details show the religious charm: solemn, holy, and dignified.
✅There are two ancient stone tablets in front of the main building of Nantang: the Shunzhi Imperial Catholic Church Stele and the Dumen Church Building Stele. The text on the stele is very vague, and there are text descriptions next to the stele.
