As its name suggests, Cheomseongdae (Chomseongdae) is a place used for observing the stars in ancient times. Built during the reign of Queen Seondeok, the 27th king of Silla, it served primarily as an astronomical observatory. Constructed of granite, the tower stands 9.17 meters tall, with a diameter of 3.1 meters at its top and 5.17 meters at its bottom. The foundation stone base measures 5.35 meters on each side. The double-tiered foundation stone base and altar are square, eight and 15 times the size of the jangdae stone, respectively. Atop the stone base rests a 27-story cylindrical tower. Cheomseongdae is wide at the bottom and narrows at the top, standing upright. Each floor is approximately 30 cm high, and the top features a double-tiered, well-shaped stone altar, presumably used as a storage space for some type of observation instrument. The well-shaped top is connected by a barrel-shaped circular structure, often mistakenly referred to as the "Star Picking Terrace."
