The Roman Circus of Tarragona, also known as the Circus of Tarraco, is one of the best preserved circuses in the West. The 5 euro entrance fee is worth it because not only can you see the remains of a Roman circus inside, the interior decoration is worth it and with a little imagination it can take you back to the past in Roman times. You can also see the underground tunnels before reaching the Pretorius or Pila Castle (so named because Pilate lived there), a tower that offers one of the best views of Tarragona. Furthermore, in 2025 Tarragona will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its Tarraco archaeological complex becoming a UNESCO Heritage City. The Circus was built at the end of the 1st century between the Via Augusta and the Provincial Forum. The building was used to host performances such as chariot races. Perched in the heart of Tarragona, this former chariot-racing arena is part of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage treasures, and its surrounding areas provide the perfect backdrop for a memorable outdoor meal. To make the most of your picnic, head to the Plaça del Rei or the terrace area near the old city walls. These spots offer panoramic views of the Circ Romà and the Mediterranean Sea. Pack a basket with fresh local delicacies, such as pa amb tomàquet (Catalan bread with tomato), olives, fuet (a type of cured sausage), and a bottle of Tarragona’s local wine or cava. We had lunch at 12pm but I recommend arriving during the late afternoon to enjoy the golden hour, when the sunlight bathes the Roman ruins in warm hues, and stay until sunset for a truly magical experience. Remember to bring a blanket, sunscreen, and a reusable bag for waste to keep this historic site pristine.
