Chongqing Dazu Rock Carvings|North Dunhuang, South Dazu
📕"The rugged cliffs in the Dazu area preserve a unique series of rock carvings, spanning from the 9th to the 13th century AD. These carvings are renowned for their high artistic quality and diverse themes, vividly reflecting the daily social life of China during this period, and fully demonstrating the harmonious coexistence of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism at this time."
-
📕The Dazu Rock Carvings are represented by the "Five Mountains" grottoes of Beishan, Baoding, Nanshan, Shimenshan, and Shizhushan, each with its own characteristics. Beishan Grotto is known as the "Chinese Guanyin Statue Exhibition Hall", Baoding Mountain Grotto is the only large-scale grotto in the country with a unified conceptual layout, Nanshan Grotto is a fine example of Taoist statues in the country, Shimenshan Grotto is a statue area where Buddhism and Taoism coexist, and Shizhushan Grotto is a rare "Three Religions in One" statue area in the country.

Highlights:
✅Thousand-Hand Guanyin Statue
Built during the Southern Song Dynasty, it is the peak work of Guanyin statues and the largest hand-holding Guanyin statue in the country. Upon entering the Buddha Cave, you will be attracted by the nearly thousand hands on the wall and the huge main statue, which is even more magnificent and majestic after being gilded and restored.
✅Shakyamuni Nirvana Holy Relic Picture
The Buddha statue is in a reclining Buddha posture, only revealing half of the Buddha's body, which is 31 meters long, and the lower half of the body is incorporated into the mountain. The Buddha's face is serene with his eyes slightly closed. This Buddha statue is the world's largest half-body reclining Buddha statue.
✅Folk Rock Carvings Integrating Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism
The Baoding Mountain Rock Carving Area is different from most grottoes in that it has a variety of god and Buddha statues as well as many folk rock carvings that are both ethnic and life-like. There are many realistic life carvings such as the chicken-raising woman, the cattle-herding picture, and the flute-playing woman.
✅Dazu Rock Carvings Museum
After visiting the rock carvings themselves, the Dazu Museum located at the exit is not to be missed, where you can learn more deeply and in detail about the charm of Dazu.
✅Beishan Rock Carvings
The Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings are well-preserved in the Dazu Rock Carvings Scenic Area and have been perfectly presented after several restorations, while the Beishan Rock Carvings are the appearance after weathering, more original and realistic.
💡Practical tips:
1⃣️Be sure to listen to the explanation when entering the scenic area. You can ask for a guide at the entrance of the scenic area, or you can follow the detailed guide in the scenic area's public account.
2⃣️Baoding Mountain and Beishan are divided into two scenic areas. If you go to both, it is recommended to buy a combo ticket.
3⃣️The country's first Dolby Panorama Sound Sphere Cinema will play rock carving-related films, and it is recommended to buy a combo ticket.
Visited another world heritage site here in China! The Dazu Rock Carvings! 👏🏻🙌🏻 We joined a group tour to see this place and I was so glad we did because its worth it. We left the city centre at past 8am and arrived at the 1st stop at around 10. We saw some statues on top of this mountain then before 12noon we left for our lunch! We stopped at a small Chinese restaurant and our table was all set! We sat and ate with all the joiners of the tour! Then, we headed off to the gallery where we watched this amazing 3D movie-like intro of the place and it was just amazing!
Afterwards, we went on to our last stop, hopped on an electric cart that took us to all these magnificent carvings you see in the pics.
After the tour, I was able to see some souvenir stores and bought this owl made of craft materials. Before 5:00, we were back at the city and then just had a stroll around Hongyadong where we were dropped off.
I loved how organized and well-guided our tour was, we paid 200rmb all-in! All we had to do was to hop on the bus, sit back and enjoy!😍#summerincq2022 #summervacation

Dazu Carvings 🇨🇳 Chongqing
Chongqing to Dazu on the fast train is the pleasant short part of the journey to Dazu and then you'll need a taxi to the tourist centre.
Once inside the park, you are all set for 5-10km (depends how you are feeling and if you want to use the gold buggies) slow walking around beautiful scenery, plus old and new carvings.
The carvings vary from hundreds of years old, to recently restored, some are small and detailed and others gigantic and yet still intricate.
After you've 'completed it' I'd recommend heading back to Dazu city for Hotpot or Chuanchuan. It'll probably be the spiciest food you've ever had, or close to it ,but I guess it's part of the experience, before you head back to Chongqing on the fast train.

Chongqing- Dazu Rock Carvings
📍Where: Dazu County - Chongqing.
⏰ Suggested time: 1.5-2 hours.
If you’re visiting Dazu Rock Carvings, you must hire a tour guide. There aren’t many signs explaining the rock carving’s signification so you wouldn’t understand much.
Here’s some information about the site:
“The steep hillsides of the Dazu area contain an exceptional series of rock carvings dating from the 9th to the 13th century. They are remarkable for their aesthetic quality, their rich diversity of subject matter, both secular and religious, and the light that they shed on everyday life in China during this period. They provide outstanding evidence of the harmonious synthesis of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.”
Enjoy your trip!

Awe Inspiring Dazu Grottoes
Dating back to the 9th century, the epic Buddhist rock carvings in Dazu will dazzle and astound. These towering historic carvings depict Taoism and Buddhist beliefs and doctrine.
In China there are 4 main Buddhist grottoes: Mogao, Yungang, Longmen and Dazu. Located near Chongqing, the Dazu collection is the most preserved of the 4 as it escaped the destruction of the cultural revolution due to its isolated location.
There are multiple sites in the Dazu area, but if you only have time for one (like we did) visit the main site of Baodingshan, which will take you almost 2 hours to walk around and see the epic carvings.
Dazu is located approximately 1.5hours away from Chongqing (but will be longer if you visit on a public holiday and get stuck in traffic like we did). You can take a local bus, but we found it easier to hire a driver.

Pictures cannot do justice to the Dazu Rock Carvings in the Dazu District of China. They are religious and secular in nature and date back to the 7th century. My favorite carvings are the ones that show details of everyday life long ago. #merrychristmas

The Dazu Rock Carvings bring history to life on stone
⛩ The Dazu Rock Carvings are a collective name for 141 cliffside carvings within the Dazu District of Chongqing, among which the Baodingshan carvings are considered the essence. They were carved from the sixth year of Chunxi in the Southern Song Dynasty to the ninth year of Chunyou (1179-1249), under the supervision of the high monk Zhao Zhifeng who devoted over 70 years to their construction. These carvings are a rare large-scale Buddhist Tantric grotto sanctuary in China, known for the saying 'Emei in the upper court, Baoding in the lower court'.
🕋 The Dazu Rock Carvings are represented by the 'Five Mountains' grottoes of Beishan, Baoding, Nanshan, Shimen Mountain, and Shizhuan Mountain, each with its unique characteristics. Beishan grottoes are known as 'China's gallery of Guanyin statues', Baodingshan grottoes are the only large-scale grottoes in the country with a unified conceptual layout, Nanshan grottoes are the nation's finest Taoist statues, Shimen Mountain grottoes feature both Buddhist and Taoist figures, and Shizhuan Mountain grottoes are rare 'syncretism of three religions' figure areas.
🛕 The Dazu Rock Carvings are located over 90 kilometers from the downtown area of Chongqing, about an hour's drive away. Currently, the open areas for visitors are Baodingshan and Beishan. Travelers usually visit Baodingshan first and then Beishan, with a half-hour drive between them.
⛰ The Baodingshan carvings include Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian themes, composed of dozens of grottoes, resembling a historical scroll of Southern Song society life. The most important feature is the secularization of the stone carving art. The statues are centered around the Great Buddha Bay, displaying the unique style of Tang Dynasty grotto art, known for its robust and vigorous modeling. In 1961, the Baodingshan rock carvings were announced as the first batch of 'National Treasures'.
🌈 Highlights:
Thousand-Handed Guanyin: A national treasure that guards the mountain, it is also the Guanyin with the most hands in the world, said to have 1007 hands. Carved in the middle and late Southern Song Dynasty, it has been over 800 years. The sculpture is finely crafted and gilded on an 88 square meter cliff face, shining like a peacock's tail, unparalleled today.
Viewing the Amitayus Sutra Transformation Tableau: One of the largest niches in Baodingshan, it is 21.6 meters wide and 8 meters high, with a total of 169 figures carved inside. The upper part depicts the prosperity of the Western Pure Land, the middle features the images of the three saints of the West, and the rest are carvings of the three grades and nine births and the 16 contemplations.
The Deeds of the Principal Liu: Carved by Zhao Zhifeng for his mentor, Principal Liu (named Ju Zhi), it features 67 statues, about 10 meters high and 24 meters wide, divided into three layers and 14 scenes, depicting the cultivation journey of the ancestor Liu.
The Nirvana of Sakyamuni: Also known as the Reclining Buddha, it is 31 meters long, showing only half of the body. Its composition has the wonder of 'the intention is there but the brush is subdued, a painting beyond the painting', giving a sense of hidden beauty.
In addition, there are statues of Dharmapala, the Six Paths of Reincarnation, the vast treasure towers, the Huayan Three Saints, the Nirvana of Sakyamuni, the filial piety transformation tableau, the hell transformation tableau, the Perfect Enlightenment sanctuary, the Herding Ox sanctuary, and others, with lifelike figures and profound implications.
A wonderful UNESCO world heritage day trip from Chongqing!
We took a tour from Chongqing, and drove the 1.5hrs to Dazu.
We visited a few sites, including Beishan, The Dazu museum and Baodingshan. There are other areas to see, though probably easier to get to with your own transport. I think it might be nice also to see some of the lesser visited areas to avoid the crowds!
The carvings and caves themselves are extensive, well-preserved and varied. There is enough to keep you occupied - and it might be interesting also to see the Dazu movie (though we weren't able to do so on our tour!).
It's quite a tiring day out, with lots of walking, and maybe some overload in terms of carvings and statues for some - but if you're interested in Buddhism & Taoism, Chinese history and these types of caves, it's well worth a trip!

Visiting the Dazu North Mountain Rock Carvings, I am amazed by the wisdom and achievements of the great and hardworking Chinese nation!
This weekend, I specifically drove to visit the Dazu North Mountain Rock Carvings Scenic Area (fulfilling my own wish), which was established between 892 and 1162 AD, and has since reached its current scale. Centered around Buddha Bay, it includes Buddha Ear Rock, Guanyin Slope, Yingpan Slope, and other areas, with nearly ten thousand statues. It showcases the development and changes of Chinese folk Buddhist beliefs and grotto-style art, known for its exquisite and elegant features, and has been acclaimed as a gallery of Tang and Song Dynasty stone carving art. In 1999, it was listed on the 'World Heritage List' by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. It is a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction. The main attractions include the Dabao Pagoda, Xiaojing Pavilion, Three-World Buddha Niche, Shuiyue Guanyin Cave, Wei Junjing Stele, Vaisravana Heavenly King Niche, Sakyamuni Preaching Niche, Marici Devi Niche, Peacock Daming King Niche, Hariti Mother Niche, Guanyin Ksitigarbha Niche, Avalokitesvara Wish-Fulfilling Wheel Bodhisattva Cave... and a total of 290 stone carvings including the Three-World Buddha Niche! It is truly worth a visit to understand the Chinese grotto rock carving culture, a cultural feast that purifies the soul!
The Dazu Rock Carvings, this seriously underrated attraction
"The Dunhuang of the North, the Dazu of the South"
The Dazu Rock Carvings are one of the World Cultural Heritages and also the only World Cultural Heritage in Chongqing, truly worth a visit!
On the Baoding Mountain of Dazu, exquisitely carved cliff statues are silently hidden among the mountains and fields, blending the essence of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. The lifelike stone carvings and murals are breathtaking!
The carvings have preserved an immortal civilization in the most ancient way

Chongqing | Dazu Rock Carvings One-Day Tour Walking Guide
There are many places worth visiting around Chongqing, especially the Dazu Rock Carvings, known as 'Northern Dunhuang, Southern Dazu' and a 'World Cultural Heritage' site. Only by exploring it yourself can you truly appreciate the significance of these titles.
Transportation:
Self-driving: Convenient, time-saving, and free 100km, about 1 hour 40 minutes-2 hours
High-speed train + taxi: About 40 minutes from Chongqing North to Dazu South Station, then a taxi to Baodingshan Scenic Area about 40km, 50 minutes, taxi fare 80-100 yuan (for those with multiple people or who don't want to wait for the bus)
Bus: There are many departure points from Chongqing to Dazu Bus Station, 45 yuan about 2 and a half hours, after getting off, cross the road to take bus 205 to Dazu Rock Carvings or a taxi about 10km (for one person or not in a hurry)
Tickets:
You can book online or buy tickets on-site, enter with your ID card, which will recognize face scanning, and then you can use face scanning to enter and exit the attractions
It's cost-effective to buy a package ticket in the off-season, which includes the digital cinema, museum, transportation ticket, and Beishan Rock Carvings all together for 170 yuan
Are all package tickets worth it?
1 Digital Cinema: If you don't know much about the Dazu Rock Carvings before going, it's worth a visit. It restores the details of the entire carvings, allowing you to see the overall appearance from different angles and includes a simple introduction~ There's a documentary on Bilibili, if you've seen it before, then the cinema is optional
2 Museum: Supplements a lot of background knowledge related to the carvings and the story of archaeological excavations. I feel that you don't need to hire a guide for the museum, you can spend the money inside the scenic area~
3 Transportation is necessary because it's really big inside, and it might take about 40 minutes to walk to the carvings area. Even taking the vehicle takes a long time, going round and round~
4 Beishan Rock Carvings: If time permits, it's still worth a visit. It's much smaller compared to Baodingshan, but it's also different. Moreover, Beishan is almost empty during the off-season. When I went, there was only one family inside, I followed a guide and listened along the way~ If time is tight, it's also valuable to learn more about history and explanations at Baodingshan.
Route: Cinema - Baodingshan - Museum - Beishan
The route in the scenic area is actually very clear. You enter through the cinema, then take a vehicle to Baodingshan, passing a commercial street into the scenic area, and then there's a vehicle at the entrance that can take you to the bottom of the carvings. On the return trip, there's also a stop at the museum, and after visiting, you can walk back to the main gate or wait for the same vehicle to take you back to the entrance.
You can first visit Baodingshan in the morning, then have lunch or dinner back in the city in the afternoon, and then go to Beishan or go straight to Beishan and have a meal after finishing. It's recommended to go when the sun is about to set, as you can see the light.
Explanation:
The Dazu Rock Carvings themselves have explanations, both Baodingshan and Beishan have them, and they are conveniently planned according to the tour route. If you have watched the documentary before and have a lot of understanding, the official explanations are sufficient. However, a human guide may share many other stories, and if you are very interested in this period of history, it's quite worth hiring a guide for a deeper understanding.
Do not miss the Dazu Rock Carvings at any cost
The Dazu Rock Carvings, acclaimed alongside the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang and the Yungang Grottoes, are the epitome of the southward shift of cave art from the north, with the creation of statues beginning in the Tang Dynasty.
It is truly a place worth visiting around Chongqing, with a tranquil environment in the mountains. If you're not in a hurry, it's also perfect for a leisurely stroll and photography.
It's best to do some preliminary research before going, such as the start time of the excavation here, and the integration of Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian cultures, etc.
Before going up, it is recommended to visit the stone carving museum in the scenic area first. Inside, there is information about the restoration of the Dazu Rock Carvings, the state of various stages of restoration, the techniques used, etc., which is very helpful for understanding the stone carvings you will see after going up the mountain (after going up the mountain, you can also see the colorful experimental materials for cultural relic restoration work placed in the grottoes).

9 things you must know before going to Dazu Rock Carvings: Its perfection far exceeds Longmen Grottoes
When traveling to Chongqing, besides the urban area, many people will choose attractions such as Wulong Tiankeng, but do you know? In Dazu District of Chongqing, there is a treasure grotto that shocks the world, which is Dazu Rock Carvings.
Sculpture art and ancient architecture lovers must know the following seven things before going to Dazu Rock Carvings:
1. Not only Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings in Dazu Rock Carvings are worth seeing, but also Beishan Rock Carvings in Dazu urban area are more exquisite in knife work; Nanshan, Shizhuan Mountain, and Shimen Mountain also have time to visit.
2. Individual visitors to Dazu Rock Carvings can rent an electronic explainer without hiring a guide, but they need to confirm the return point on the map in advance, otherwise it will be a waste of time. Maybe you can not rent it, go to each mouth and listen to the explanation after scanning, it is a bit more expensive at 10 yuan each time.
3. During the Spring Festival and other winter times, the main scenic area Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings to Beishan bus stops at 3:00 in the afternoon, so it is best to drive by yourself.
4. The statues of Dazu Rock Carvings have gone through the early Tang, late Tang, and Five Dynasties. The main statues are works of the two Song Dynasties. There are also additions in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is the only world cultural heritage in Chongqing.
5. The completeness and exquisiteness of Dazu Rock Carvings are much higher than those of Longmen Grottoes. The exquisiteness is probably only comparable to Dunhuang. It's just that the height of the statue is not as high as Longmen and Yungang Grottoes, and the age is not as old as Yungang.
6. If time is not enough, there is no need to buy a joint ticket, just buy a ticket for the main scenic area Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings. If you have time, you must go to Beishan at least.
7. The package ticket you buy will include a digital movie ticket. Be sure to check the time in advance and don't miss it. The digital movie is still very shocking.
8. Transportation: There is a direct bus from Chongqing North Station to Dazu. After arriving, you can take a bus directly to Baoding Mountain.
9. Remember to check the location of the chicken-raising woman sculpture in the junior high school textbook in advance. It is in the first cave of Baoding Mountain's six reincarnations.
Chongqing Babysitter-level Travel Guide (Suitable for Beginners)
🙋🏻♀️I traveled to Chongqing in mid-January, with a travel duration of one week, this guide combines personal experience.
❖ DAY1: High-speed train arrival——Hongya Cave in the evening——Qiansimen Bridge
❖ DAY2: Hongya Cave Pier——Ferry——Ciqikou
❖ DAY3: Dazu Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings——Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street in the evening
❖ DAY4: White Mansion/Zhazidong——Mountain City Trail——Eighteen Ladders
❖ DAY5: Return home from Jiangbei Airport
✈️Transportation:
The plane is at Jiangbei Airport, it is recommended to take the high-speed rail at Chongqing North Station. Online car-hailing is generally cheap. The starting price for taxis is 10 yuan. It is recommended to walk in the Jiefangbei Hongya Cave area in the city center, walking is faster than taking a taxi. Due to the terrain of Chongqing, vehicle travel may be a bit roundabout and traffic is heavy, traffic jams are common.
🏡Accommodation:
If you spend most or all of your time playing in Yuzhong District, it is recommended to stay near Jiefangbei Chaotianmen. I live near Chaotianmen Metro Station, which is convenient for transportation and can walk to Jiefangbei Hongya Cave and other downtown areas. If you live near Jiefangbei, the hotel is basically a commercial house renovation, there may be multiple hotels in one building, the elevator is crowded, the sound insulation effect is poor, and the infrastructure is old.
🎫Attraction tickets and reservation matters
(1) To Ciqikou Ferry, it departs on the hour. The single trip is 40r, the voyage is 1h, and you can buy tickets online for Chongqing Jiaoyun Liangjiang Tour or Jiaoyun Water Sightseeing (there is a free shuttle bus to the ancient town after getting off the boat)
(2) White Mansion tickets are free, but need to be reserved in advance
(3) It is recommended to buy tickets for Dazu Rock Carvings online, it is more cost-effective to buy a package, and it is recommended to take a sightseeing car in the scenic area. (For details, see the Dazu Rock Carvings Guide on the homepage)
🧢Items to bring and wear:
ID card, half-price or free ticket documents, umbrella.
Chongqing's winter is relatively humid and cold, with heavy fog, and cloudy and rainy days are the most common. The temperature is not too low, it is recommended to wear a coat, thin sweater, etc. The specific outfit depends on the weather forecast on the day of the trip.
🌶Specialties and food:
Specialties: Bridgehead, Mingyang and other hot pot base materials, Chen Chang Silver Twist, etc.
Food: Small noodles, mixed noodles, wontons, brown sugar rice cakes, various community old hot pots, etc.
🌸Other matters:
(1) If you want to taste Shuangliu Old Mother Rabbit Head in Jiefangbei, you can go and buy it. There is a Wang Su Sheng Mahjong Cake that is also quite delicious, but it is a bit expensive. The prices on the entire pedestrian street are almost the same, you can buy and taste appropriately.
(2) Hongya Cave is crowded at night, and the price for soliciting photos is basically 30r per photo (not necessary).
(3) You can use the online car-hailing software to carpool from the city to Dazu, which is cheaper per capita than cars and trains and saves time. It is cost-effective. It takes about two hours to get from Chaotianmen to Baoding Mountain. (Excluding peak traffic periods)
(4) Ciqikou Ancient Town is heavily commercialized, but there are many free tastings inside, and the girls are very enthusiastic, and there are many performances worth watching.
(5) It is recommended to go to Zhazidong first and then to the White Mansion. In this way, there are fewer uphill sections to walk, the straight-line distance is 1km, the actual walking time is 30 minutes, and there are a lot of uphill sections in the White Mansion, which is not recommended for the elderly and children. Chongqing·China
North Dunhuang, South Dazu
Chongqing's seriously underestimated scenic spot, it's really shocking..
Dazu Rock Carvings,
silently hidden between the mountains and wilds,
over ten thousand exquisitely carved cliff statues.
Combining the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism,
with a very figurative interpretation,
presenting secular scenes such as loyalty, reincarnation, region, and nirvana.
Exquisitely carved, lifelike,
well preserved despite the millennia of wind and frost.
A journey across a thousand years,
leaves one in awe, lingering and forgetting to return.

🗿【Recommended Attractions】
🔍: Chongqing Dazu Rock Carvings
🈺: 9:30-16:30
——
🗿【Recommended Routes and Transportation】
🚗: Self-driving navigation to 'Dazu Rock Carvings Digital Cinema', there is a parking lot at the entrance of the scenic spot.
——
🗿【Tour and Photo Check-in Strategy】
✅Be sure to manage your time! The scenic spot can't be entered after 16:30 in the afternoon, if you want to go to the museum and watch movies in the cinema, it is recommended to watch the movie first → museum → Baoding Mountain, this way the tour route is more reasonable, and it is more conducive to step by step understanding of the rock carving culture. 🌟Thousand-Hand Guanyin Statue
Built during the Southern Song Dynasty, it is the pinnacle of Guanyin statues and the largest Thousand-Hand Guanyin statue in the country. As soon as you enter the Buddha cave, you are attracted by the nearly thousand hands on the wall and the huge main image. After the gilding restoration, it is elegant and majestic, with a thousand people and a thousand hands, none of them are the same!
🌟Sakyamuni Nirvana Holy Trace Map
The Buddha statue is in a reclining Buddha posture, only revealing half of the Buddha's body 31 meters long and the lower half is introduced into the mountain. The Buddha's face is slightly closed, and his expression is peaceful. This Buddha statue is the largest half-body reclining Buddha statue in the world.
🌟Folk rock carvings integrating Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism
The Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings are different from most of the grottoes. In addition to various god and Buddha statues, there are also many folk rock carvings that are both ethnic and life-like. There are chicken-raising women, cattle-herding pictures, flute-playing women and many other realistic life rock carvings.
The main scenic area has Shengshou Temple and Dazu Rock Carvings Museum
Shengshou Temple is very popular
You can go
Explore the stone carvings! The beauty carved by the wind of the Tang and Song dynasties for a thousand years
"North Dunhuang, South Dazu." Before I went to see the Dazu stone carvings, I thought this sentence was just a saying, because Dunhuang is much more popular.
However, when you really come to Dazu and face the Buddha, you can vaguely see the wind of the Tang and Song dynasties for a thousand years.
Tens of thousands of exquisitely carved cliff statues are quietly hidden between the mountains.
It integrates the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, lifelike, breathtaking.
We just caught up with a rainy day, which added a layer of mist to the already mysterious stone carvings, and even my son said it felt like an outdoor adventure.
·
What to see in Dazu🦶 stone carvings?
✔️With its name in Dunhuang, it shows its important position in the history of Chinese grotto art.
✔️Compared with other grottoes, the characteristic of Dazu stone carvings is secularization. And it integrates the themes of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, and the cultural harmony is integrated.
·
👨👩👦How to play?
The Dazu stone carvings began in the Tang Dynasty and are distributed in five areas: Baoding Mountain, North Mountain, South Mountain, Shizhuan Mountain, and Shimen Mountain. Now only Baoding Mountain and North Mountain are open.
1⃣️Baoding Mountain:
📌Recommend going to Baoding Mountain in the morning, watch digital movies (need to make an appointment when buying tickets), there are two, one is regular and one is spherical, a bit like Dunhuang.
📌Then take the sightseeing car to Baoding Mountain to see the main body of the stone carvings. All the iconic stone carvings are here.
📌After visiting Baoding Mountain, take a car to the Stone Carving Museum to learn more about stone carving culture.
2⃣️North Mountain:
It is about half an hour's drive from Baoding Mountain. You can drive by yourself or take a scenic shuttle bus. The statues here are earlier than Baoding Mountain, the scale is not large but very exquisite, there is a saying "Baoding is lively, North Mountain is the way".
And there is a night scene🌌 here, watching the stone carvings under the light at night has a more mysterious feeling, anyway, I dare not go alone.
3⃣️Li Family Ancestral Hall:
There is a small waterfall and a man-made reservoir here, those who like the outdoors can come and walk around.
4⃣️Mingshan Temple:
This is in Anyue, you need to drive by yourself, the scale is not large. But the reason why the stone carvings here🔥 are popular is that after being eroded by the wind, the Buddha statue has a horizontal texture, which is very artistic. If it is not well protected, maybe after many years, these stone carvings will merge with the rocks again and become their original appearance, a bit emotional.

The National Day holiday is coming soon, if you want to come to Sichuan and Chongqing to play, I recommend you to go to Dazu to see, experience the last monument in the history of world grotto art!
Essential travel tips for Dazu Rock Carvings
Having visited the Karst scenic area in Chongqing, it's inevitable to visit the Dazu Rock Carvings, which are listed on the 'World Heritage List' by UNESCO.
The transportation to Dazu Rock Carvings is very convenient, you can choose to take a bus or train to get there. Of course, for us tourists from other places, it's most convenient to find accommodation near the scenic spot...
Arrive in Dazu District one night in advance, plan the route for tomorrow's trip, I think this is a must for travel, so as not to be in the dark on the day of the trip, not only tired to death, but also not going to the places that should be visited, this is the most loss-making.
The Dazu Rock Carvings scenic area includes Beishan Rock Carvings, Baoding Mountain, Nanyan and other attractions. But due to the itinerary, you can't see the whole picture, so you must make a choice, we chose Baoding Mountain, which is our 'memory of the sea' , including the route of representative rock carvings such as 'Thousand-Hand Guanyin' and 'Reclining Buddha'.
Baoding Mountain is mainly based on the Great Buddha Bay, which includes Small Buddha Bay, Guangda Mountain, Longtan, Songlin Slope and other places.
The Great Buddha Bay is located in a mountain bay, with rock carvings on the cliff face. It is said that there are 31 giant statues and 17 inscriptions, with a total cliff face of about 3600 square meters. You can imagine how grand the project is.
Rock carvings cannot be touched, and you should not make loud noises when viewing rock carvings. Also, you should visit within the specified time, turn off the flash when taking pictures, but I think when you are in such a profound and serious scene, besides feeling shocked, for us Chinese, there will be a sense of awe that makes us feel respectful and dare not act rashly.
To appreciate our rock carving art, there are shops selling local specialty products in the scenic area. You can choose to buy some souvenirs, experience the local food and life, relax your tense mood from a day of travel, and you will feel refreshed.
(I don't know if you have that kind of feeling, once you enter the Buddha Hall or temple, I always have a feeling of being careful and purifying my six senses? ) Dazu Rock Carvings

This is Dazu Rock Carvings located in Chongqing China, actually it is at the border between Chengdu and Chongqing. We came here after our visit to Chongqing. I had been wanting to see this for year and I finally saw them. I am always fascinated with carvings and scultures so I was so glued into looking and staring at them. Imagine? how did they carve these at the top of the mountain and in the middle of nowhere. It is just really fascinating. I really took my time but then we had a short time here that's why we could'nt finish exploring this area. Well, I guess it calls for another visit sooner or later right? Address: Dazu District, Chongqing. How to get here: Take a bus from north railway station for only 60 rmb and takes you around 3 hours travel time.

Visiting Daze Caves on own
The fast train from Chongqing west takes about 30 minutes. The train cost $6 usd each. After getting to the train station, you can take a taxi to the caves for $15 usd or 100 rmb. The Cave entrance with transportation is 130 rmb ($18 USD). We took the 10:30 am train, visiting the caves by 12 pm. We book a 6:30pm train back to Chongqing, which gave more than enough time to see two sites. Much much cheaper than a tour!
