A whimsical 30-hr trip to Georgetown, Penang
#thingstodo
Itinerary guide from a georgetown first timer
(30 hours+ stay only)
So last 11.11 sale, i had a whimsical purchase of a good priced tickets (from Trip) to Penang from Singapore.
And so for one of the weekend in January i flew from Changi T4 to Penang Interantional Airport.
Upon landing, I was contemplating if i would take a Grab (RM 25+) from Airport to my Hotel or take the bus to the city center, luckily when i stepped out of the airport doors, i saw an incoming Rapid Bus 401E coming to the bus stop, and so i ran to catch it~ the fare was only RM 2.70, what a good deal!
The travel time was around an hour, and i alight at Komtar. Since is was past lunch time, i ate on one of the nearby shopping malls around. After i was done and shopped a bit, i took a Grab to my hotel nearby for RM 5.00.
So this was my plan for the trip:
After Noon Plans (after 5pm)
📍Penang Hotel
📍Penang Esplanade
📍Fort Cornwallis
📍Walk aound the city
📍Back to Hotel
📍Dinner and Drinks at nearby bar at Chula st.
📍Sleep
Morning Plan (8am to 12nn check out)
📍Walk around to see street arts (after sunrise)
📍Breakfast
📍Pinang Peranakan Mansion
📍Walk around some more
📍Hotel Check out at noon
📍Lunch at China House
📍Art Lane
📍Grab to Queensbay mall (for shopping)
📍Grab to Penang Airport
And that's it, that was how i roughly spend my trip~

The Kazan by The Volcano
A Malaysian venture started out by a group of four friends who fell in love with the original THE VOLCANO in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the Japanese influence in its menu still come through nonetheless regardless the locality. With the cheese toasts like 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁 as the establishment’s forefront items, it gives the much desired eating experience from the cheese pull to the warm, soft and milky texture of the cheese filling.
Even for the cheese-free alternatives including 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 & 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗣𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁, the french toast never fails to shine with its sweet and buttery scent complementing the flavourful and tart filling.
With ample seating for varying group sizes and seating styles, it is a great location for an afternoon or evening chat over dessert. Looking forward to try its many other Japanese-inspired delicacies on the next visit.

The Prestige Hotel Penang
A lovely hotel located near the beach in Georgetown. From their rooftop swimming pool, you can get a great vista of the mainland and the ports across the straits. The hotel is not very tall but it is long. There are plenty of shops on the ground floor such as a convenience store, a cafe and a fine dining restaurant. I love their interior decoration. The is also a bar on the rooftop and an up and coming restaurant. The rooms are spacious and clean. The lighting design is very nice, and it exudes warmth and serenity. The room amenities are standard but I do love the local snacks I enjoyed during my childhood years. The bed is comfortable and the sheets and linen are fresh. They also have a car park and guests park for free. The street is quiet in the evening despite the hotel's popularity.

Kafka Coffee
This is our first visit to Kafka and I like the ambient and food here. Spaces and no disappointment on any food that we ordered. Music is so good. Its not noisy so you can have a great chilling time here with your friends.
Strongly recommended for gathering to try different variety of food here. I will definitely come back again to try out other food in the menu.

Higher Ground
The place has very nice vibe and interior, with a rustic design and also somewhat spacious. It is well lit with natural lighting during the day. The foods were quite good, the burger was quite filling with the patty well seasoned. The fries were a bit salty though. Have to order and pay at the counter. Located along Leith Street. Street parkings are available but depending on peak hour and crowd.

📍 Halzan by Wheeler's @ Gurney
#myfoodies
Address:
No 168A, Central@Gurney Unit G08, Halzan Penang, Persiaran Gurney, 10250 George Town, Pulau Pinang
Halzan is a new Nordic style restaurant established by Wheeler's. As soon as you walk in, you'll be greeted by a cheerful staff waiting to seat you. And of course, every angle you look, it was picture perfect!
While we were blown away by the interior, decor and amazing customer service, the drinks and waffle were pretty subpar in our opinion.
The waffle especially was neither fluffy nor crispy, and doesn't taste much unless you dip it in the berry sauce or eat it with the ice cream. Definitely not worth the price.

🍜 Bone to Bone Soup Master @ Penang
#wheretogo
Address:
171-B, Lebuh Victoria, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang
Bone to Bone Soup Master is located at Lebuh Victoria, just beside Ciao Gelato. We heard from friends that they were famous for their ramen broth, so we were there to try it out for ourselves!
We ordered their Ninniku Ramen (Black Garlic Oil Ramen), Gyoza (not pictured because it got devoured) and Unagi Rice.
The broth for the ramen was so flavorful and thick, and the garlic oil was so fragrant! The noodles were slightly overcooked but the broth was so delicious, it overshadowed it all.
Their gyoza was handmade, including the skin! It wasn't crispy at the bottom, but it was juicy and the meat was overflowing with goodness.
However, the unagi rice did not deliver at all. It was not grilled to perfection and the sauce was also not up to par.
Overall, please order their ramen and gyoza! So delicious and worth it!

Tanah Aina Cafe in Penang
This cafe located in Georgetown Penang, cafe no 6 Jalan Greenhall Penang.
They serve local and western food. We just order fries and coffee because when we found this cafe we already taken our breakfast. This cafe open at 8:30 am till 10pm. This place is so cozy, the furniture they selected also look very classy and expensive. For me this cafe is quite and very privacy and also suitable for meeting friends and do gatherings at upper floor.
Yummy Dim Sum in Penang Island
#malaysia
#penang
This is Fu Er Dai Dim Sum restaurant located in George Town, Penang Island. It is really convenient to use the Grab app in Penang to get to places you want to go. It is only a five minutes walk away from my hotel (OZO George Town Penang Hotel). The variety of Dim Sum is not much but they are delicious. The prawns used were very fresh too. There was a long queue after we have finished eating at around 8 am. they open at 630 am, so do go early to eat if you want to avoid the queue. I went around 730 and there was no queue.
Bustling Kimberley Street Night Market
#malaysia
Address: 1, Jalan Sungai Ujong, George Town, 10100 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Along Lebuh Kimberley, the whole stretch of street comes alive after 5pm with street food hawkers coming out to sell various local food delights such as Char Kway Teow, Balachan Fried Chicken, Lok Lok and more. There are a lot of people queuing up at the various stalls, and some stalls actually sell out quite early and close earlier. I was actually thinking of buying the chicken from the Kimberley Street Fried Balachan store but the store owner was already preparing to close and wash up when I went back around 7.30pm!
Do note that the road is not closed for traffic in the evening, so there are still vehicles zooming past you while you walk along the street.

Hey George(Town)!
#mymymemories 💛
Had the loveliest time in Penang visiting the islands, eateries, museums, old buildings and cafes.
Such a great beautiful walkable town. The food was good and reasonably priced. The locals were so friendly and recommended all the best places to eat even the shop owners would recommend other shops to try! Amazing how the community is so helpful and the sense of togetherness is well shown.
So beautiful from day to night. The street art, architecture and history of the place is something I’ll never forget.
Would definitely come back here for the souvenirs and lovely locals! 10/10 recommend! 👍🏻

After the visit, you can also go downstairs to buy some of their chocolate, or visit their cafe for some drinks.
Interesting "Cat-theme" shop in George Town
Address: 58, Lebuh Acheh, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Just near the Butterfly Cat mural lies an interesting cat theme shop. There are a number of cat theme murals inside the shop, as well as cat decorations, paintings and more (like a mini Cat museum). The owner invited us to go inside and take photos for free.
The shop carries a lot of cat-theme souvenirs such as keychains, bags, pouches, t-shirts and more. The items sold there are quite unique and will be great for cat lovers to visit.
Captivating Fusion of Heritage & Creativity!
Hin Bus Depot Penang, a former bus depot turned art space in George Town, is a captivating fusion of heritage and contemporary creativity. Vibrant murals, exhibitions, and cultural events make it a hub for both locals and tourists. The depot's revival has triggered an artistic renaissance in the area, prompting the emergence of galleries and cafes. While successfully revitalizing the space, the challenge remains in preserving its artistic essence amidst increasing commercialization. 🛍 Weekend Market @ Journal Georgetown
#mymymemories
Address:
29, Muntri St, Georgetown, 10200 George Town, Penang
Journal Georgetown is located in a refurbished heritage building, and it features a collective of stores including a cafe. They host monthly weekend markets with different themes! This month in particular was called Petjoy, and it is a pet friendly event! We met a lot of furry friends, including a black shiba inu! 🐾
There were lots of stalls, but due to the maze-like structure of the building, every stall was scattered and some were quite hidden. There were vendors selling kombucha, prawn crackers, clothes and even tarot reading!
The idea is great, but unfortunately we think that it was a little too ambitious as markets shouldn't be enclosed in a tight space such as this. It was a little hard navigating around and we ended up walking out after a bit.

🧱 Cafe Hoppin': Higher Ground [Penang]
#mymymemories
Address:
19-19A, Lebuh Leith, George Town, 10200 George Town, Pulau Pinang
Higher Ground has been one of our favorite cafe in Penang since its inception. We first chanced upon it while looking for our daily fix for coffee!
It's located opposite the Blue Mansion, but if you don't look closely, you may miss it! A century ago, the location was actually a 🐴 horse stable, and it is now beautifully converted into a cafe - with a rustic and modern look.
Pet owners, rejoice! Higher Ground is pet friendly and you can bring your pets to have a good time with you as well!

Penang George Town 🥰 The Memorable Place
Last month, I visited Penang with my family. George Town, , a world cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO, is the place that I would recommend to anyone to visit and stay to get away from the stuffy and find the lovely and old. But, at the end of the day, Penang is still a quiet historical city with no shadow of large buildings, kind people, and welcoming.
Going along every street is a must. So when coming to George Town, wandering on every street is a different experience that will make you admiring and surprised.

The TOP Penang
The Top Penang was an extremely nice place to visit.
Embarking on a journey to the iconic tower was like stepping into a realm of pure exhilaration. As the elevator whisked skyward, anticipation built with every passing floor. The cityscape sprawled beneath me, a mesmerizing tapestry of lights and life, while the distant horizon seemed to stretch infinitely.
Worth a visit.#mymymemories #awesomepic #skyview #niceplace #familyvisit #triptopenang
Penang Cafes
Every Malaysian we spoke to about Penang told us to eat and drink in George Town - in fact, we learned that many locals in Penang eat five to six meals a day! So we spent two days hopping from one cafe to another. Below is a list of places we visited and what we ordered:
Jing-Si Books & Cafe: really affordable and high quality teas in a zen environment
Constant Gardener Cafe: fresh juices and nice coffees and ice cream desserts
Mews Cafe: nice Peranakan dishes
Mugshot Cafe: fun themed cafe with amazing salmon bagel sandwiches
Potter’s Cafe: fresh squeezed juices, coffee/tea, and snacks (kaya toast and cinnamon toast)
Cafe hopping is a must in George Town/Penang! There are so many fun ones to visit and try their tasty drinks and food.

🧋Cafe Hoppin': CHAGEE @ Kimberley St [Penang]
#wecreate #foodie #penang
Address:
39, Lebuh Kimberley, George Town, 10100 George Town, Pulau Pinang
Ambiance:
This particular CHAGEE outlet is located in one of the old shop lots at Kimberley Street. The outlet looks strikingly different than others, it follows an old oriental style - as it is situated right in the middle of the heritage area of Georgetown.
But as soon as you step in, the interior embodies a good mix of heritage and modern style. We especially loved the wooden slat tree in the middle of the store!
Highlights:
Our favorite drink is the Tie Guan Yin Milk Tea! Perfectly brewed, super fragrant and not too sweet. It costs RM14.90 for 500ml and RM16.90 for 700ml.
Pricing:
$$ Slightly cheaper than some established bubble milk tea place.

A Must Visit in Penang - Two Frenchies Restaurant Penang
A French chef met a French man in Malaysia and decided to opened a French restaurant. Nowadays Two Frenchies is so famous in Penang but their price is considered reasonable, so it is advisable to make a reservation for dinner. We ordered Mushroom soup, Raclette, Chunky Duck Parmentier, Raviolis Mushroom, Creme Brulee, set lunch came with Chocolate Mousse during our first visit, and the foods were so delicious that out of our expectation. The waiters in the restaurant are professional and provide good services. And the owner comes out to say hello and inquire about the quality of the food from time to time.
In addition, this is a pet friendly restaurant. There were customers who put their dogs on the sofa to sit together, but the cute puppy barked loudly from time to time. This is the only place where points are deducted. Nevertheless, Two Frenchies is highly recommended.
