The Fortress of Jiayuguan
Getting There - 1hr by train from Zhangye
Attractions - Jiayuguan Pass
Jiayuguan Pass used to be the starting point of the ancient Great Wall built during Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644). We spent in Jiayuguan just couple of hours on the way from Zhangye to Dunhuang. We had about 5 hours transit between our trains so we jumped on the Didi and went directly to the Jiayuguan Pass. The ticket costs 80yuan and it allows you to visit both the Pass and the part of the Great Wall. In fact the distance from there to the Great Wall is about 15km, so you can easily visit both attractions in one day.
It was very windy and overcast when we arrived, but the scenery was just incredible. I was impressed by height of walls in the fortress, you can also walk up the wall and enjoy the view of Gobi desert from there.

"The world's first Xiongguan" Jiayuguan, wind and rain for six hundred years
Jiayuguan is the starting point of the west end of the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty, known as "Chinese and foreign defense", "Hexi first mouth". After six hundred years, the current Jiayuguan is still solid and golden, and the Megatron is square, with strict barriers and integration with the Great Wall. According to the end of the western end of the Great Wall, the male is backed by the rolling Qilian Mountains and stands on the top of Jiayu Mountain.
In the first place, Jiayuguan, all eyes are all khaki, the whole Guancheng is like the pile of loess, but it is the most intact one in the Great Wall.
Approaching Jiayuguan, the gates of the towers are engraved with the three characters "Jiayuguan". A three-storey three-five-family building is built on the gate. His Majesty has Zuo Zongtangs inscription The First Xiongguan in the World. The layout of the building is exquisite and powerful. It echoes with the the worlds first customs Shanhaiguan, which is far away from the distance. Standing on the imposing Jiayuguan City Tower, you can see the Gobi Desert, the mountains and the mountains in the north and the south. The snow on the top of the mountain is clearly visible. Qilian Snow Mountain is vast and vast. For hundreds of years, it has been like a silent guardian, and spent more than 600 years with Jiayuguan.
I saw a piece of grass in front of Jiayuguan, camels and horses moving slowly, and I heard the crisp camel ringing on the ancient Silk Road.
Jiayuguan is like a history-old man who has experienced vicissitudes of life. He is standing between Montenegro and Qilian Mountain in the face of hunting hurricanes. He watches the loneliness of the desert and tells the people who have been here for centuries. In the long years, singing old songs.
Jiayuguan | The First and Greatest Pass under Heaven is captured on film
| The First and Greatest Pass under Heaven is captured on film. Jiayuguan truly deserves its reputation as the most formidable pass under heaven, with its loess walls standing tall there—majestic and solemn. In an instant, it's as if one can see the vast hordes of the Xiongnu wrapped in billowing sandstorms, bearing down on the city, and the tension of guarding the frontier instantly arises. Outside the city, it's utterly barren, not a blade of grass in sight, only the relentless winds whipping up the sand, comparable to the sandstorms in Beijing, only more common here. The saying 'As long as the dragon city's swift general is there, he will not let the nomadic horses cross the Yinshan Mountains' is not at all mistaken; the ancients were truly poets.

YOYO takes you to the source of freehand brushwork paintings - the murals of Jiayuguan and Yumen Pass
There's a sense of dissonance with the telescope and cannon in the 4th photo with YOYO's sticker, right?
The sites of Jiayuguan and Yumen Pass in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu.
On the Gobi desert north of Jiayuguan in Jiuquan, Gansu, there are thousands of ancient tombs, formed over several centuries.
From the more than ten tombs excavated so far, they were buried during the Cao Wei, Western Jin, and Five Liang periods, that is, from the early third century to the mid-fifth century.
Murals are a common feature in these tombs.
The painted works in Tomb No. 5 are worth appreciating.
The Wei and Jin mural tombs in Jiayuguan reflect the social reality of the time, which is very rare.
Generally, tomb murals depict the heavens, the earth, and the human realm. The so-called heavenly and earthly realms, which are mostly fictional stories, are few in number here, only seen in some shaped bricks.
The human realm mainly depicts life in the human world, and the images of loyalty, filial piety, chastity, and sages that are common in Han dynasty brick paintings are basically absent here.
What is displayed here is the social reality of the tomb owner's era, with a strong sense of the times.
The murals are created with one brick at a time, with casual and free lines, completed in a single stroke, and the use of color is also extremely simple and unadorned.
From this, one can glimpse the source of Chinese freehand ink painting.

Jiayuguan is the westernmost pass of the Ming Great Wall. Upon first entering Jiayuguan, one is greeted by a vista of loess yellow, and the entire fortress seems to be piled up with loess, yet it is the most well-preserved among the many fortresses of the Great Wall.
Approaching Jiayuguan, the stone-built gate tower is topped with a wooden three-story, three-eaved watchtower. Under the eaves, there is a horizontal plaque inscribed by Zuo Zongtang with the words "the First and Greatest Pass under Heaven", exuding a majestic aura. It echoes the "First Pass under Heaven" of Shanhaiguan, thousands of miles away.
Climbing the ancient walls, one can gaze into the vast Gobi desert and the continuous mountains, feeling the historical vicissitudes of "the First and Greatest Pass under Heaven". The ancients, taking advantage of the natural terrain, built such a magnificent and spectacular military defense project, and one can't help but admire the wisdom and extraordinary abilities of the ancestors. It's truly great!
Visiting the Jiayuguan fortress, the ticket includes a bundle of three attractions. In addition to touring the Jiayuguan fortress, one can also visit the Overhanging Great Wall and the First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall.
The journey is exhausting, but the scenery is breathtaking, and photos can hardly capture the true beauty!
To the unforgettable 2019
After taking the Lanxin High-Speed Train to Urumqi in July 2019, my yearning for the beautiful landscapes of my motherland was completely unleashed. Over the course of more than three months, I visited Ulanqab in Inner Mongolia; drove the Duku Highway alone, covering a total of 1500 kilometers; set out on the first day of the 317 highway opening to complete the Sichuan West Great Loop self-driving tour. I traveled from Highway 318 to 217 to Daocheng, and then from Seda back to Chengdu via Highway 317, covering nearly 2500 kilometers; joined a group tour around the Qinghai-Gansu Great Loop, covering nearly 3000 kilometers; and rushed to Jiuzhaigou at the beginning of November just after it reopened to witness its regal return. The journey was challenging, the scenery was stunning, and the true beauty is something that photos can hardly convey in full.

Jiayuguan
Coming to Jiayuguan, one would think of seeing the last pass of the magnificent Great Wall of our motherland. However, there are three attractions in Jiayuguan, one is the first pier of the Great Wall, one is the overhanging Great Wall, and the other is the main Jiayuguan city. These three attractions use a joint ticket, which can be used once purchased.
We found a taxi locally and agreed to visit these three attractions for 100 yuan. The taxi driver introduced us to the general situation of the three attractions along the way, which deepened our understanding based on the homework we had done.
The first stop is the first pier of the Great Wall. This place is known as the starting point of the Great Wall. In fact, at the Old Dragon Head of Shanhaiguan, there is also such a claim. This is not important, what is important is that this is indeed the starting or ending point of the Great Wall. Whether it's the first pier or the overhanging Great Wall behind, they are all built with earth. After thousands of years of wind, frost, rain and snow, the earth Great Wall is as hard as a rock. There is a river at the first pier, which winds through the deep ravine. It originates from the Qilian Mountains and Heishan, according to the Xiongnu language, it is called "Taolai River". Although the riverbed is dry and the water flow has become a stream, it also shows the beauty of nature in the cliffs on both sides.
The overhanging Great Wall is very spectacular, built on two mountains. The city wall is made of earth from the nearby Heishan. The majesty of the Great Wall shows the weapon of the year against the enemy.
The last stop is Jiayuguan City. This is where the pass is located. It is said that no one has broken this city for six hundred years. Due to time constraints, waiting to catch the train to Dunhuang, hurriedly write a few paragraphs and post a few pictures. Due to time constraints, waiting to catch the train to Dunhuang, hurriedly write a few paragraphs and post a few pictures.
Gansu
Jiayuguan.
Speaking of, at the westernmost point of the Hexi Corridor, the world's first majestic pass, Jiayuguan, an ancient road runs through the Gobi and alluvial plains at the foot of the Qilian Mountains, the ancient "Silk Road" transportation fortress.
You can take a bus directly from the city, and you can see the vicissitudes of the long river of history at a glance. The city walls on both sides of the city gate cross the desert and the Gobi. Golden horses and iron horses, the momentum is like a tiger swallowing thousands of miles.
Gansu·Jiayuguan
The First Heroic Pass of the World·Jiayuguan is located on the Gobi Desert in the northwest, the westernmost end of the magnificent Great Wall of China. The First Pier stands on the east bank of the Taolai River. The scenes of the stone-carved guards fighting and living are vivid, as if they are still there, dutifully guarding the border.
