Kan'ei-ji Temple, located in a corner of Ueno Park, was founded by the monk Tenkai in 1625 (Kan'ei 2) in the early Edo period. As the family temple of the Tokugawa family and as a temple that protected the evil direction of Edo Castle, it played an important role in the development of the city of Edo. Kan'ei-ji Temple once had a vast site, and the entire Ueno mountain was its temple grounds. However, many of the temple buildings were burned down in the Ueno War of 1868, and only some remain today. Nevertheless, historical buildings such as the Konponchudo and Kiyomizu Kannondo Hall are scattered throughout the temple, conveying the atmosphere of Edo to visitors. Kan'ei-ji Temple is also home to the graves of successive Tokugawa shoguns, including the graves of the 6th Tokugawa shogun Ienobu, the 7th Tokugawa shogun Ietsugu, the 14th Tokugawa shogun Iemochi, and the 15th Tokugawa shogun Yoshinobu. These graves are valuable places where you can feel the history of the Tokugawa family. Ueno Park, known as the 'treasure trove of historical sites and cultural properties', houses Kaneiji Temple, Tokugawa Family Mausoleum, Toshogu Shrine, Kiyomizu Kannon-do, and the statue of Takamori Saigo, among other historical sites. These buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods are scattered among the green pines and cypresses, harmonizing with the lake and mountain scenery. There are also many museums in the park. The Ueno Zoo in the northwest of the park houses over 900 species of rare birds and animals. Shinobazu Pond in the park is home to a large number of wild black swans, geese, mandarin ducks, cormorants, and mallards all year round. There is also an aquarium by the pond with over 500 species of aquatic animals. Next to the zoo is a peony garden with more than 70 varieties and over 3,000 peony plants. #tokyotrip Walked past this Temple while wandering around Ueon Park. Very tranquil temple with very friendly people looking after the shrine. Great place to visit but have to walk quite a distance to the train station as this is the furthest temple from the train station. Great for travellers who enjoys strolling through the park and suburban areas of other country. Interesting that a school is located within the Temple grounds.
