Just follow these simple steps! ✨ 1. Purify your hands before entering At the purification fountain (Chōzuya), use the wooden dipper to scoop up some water. Gently rinse your left hand, then your right, and finally, rinse the handle of the dipper. This ritual symbolizes the purification of both body and mind before offering your prayers. 🌿 2. Bathe in the incense smoke (if available) Around the large incense burner in front of the main hall, you'll see many people waving the smoke toward their bodies or heads. This is believed to bring good fortune and improve health. 🙏 3. Make an offering You can toss a few coins into the offering box. The amount doesn't matter at all—what truly counts is your sincerity. 🌸 4. Pray in peace Stand quietly, press your palms together, close your eyes slightly, and make your wish with a respectful heart. You can choose whichever route is most convenient for you: · JR Line: Take the Yamanote Line (the green circle line), Keihin-Tohoku Line, or Joban Line. Get off at Nippori Station and take the West Exit. Walk down the street for about 5 minutes, and you'll find the iconic staircase called “Yuyake Dandan.” Walk down the stairs, and you've arrived at the Yanaka-Ginza pedestrian street! · Tokyo Metro: Take the Chiyoda Line and get off at Sendagi Station (Exit 2). Turn left and walk along the main road (Shinobazu-dori) until you reach an intersection with a pharmacy and a convenience store. Turn right there to enter the Yanaka-Ginza shopping district. Before our trip to Japan, I read a lot of articles. Some said Japan is insanely expensive. Others assured it's almost cheaper than Europe right now. The truth, as usual, was somewhere in the middle. We spent 7 days in Japan in April (flying out on the eighth), visited Tokyo, Fujiyoshida, Kyoto, and Osaka, and I made sure to track all our expenses. An important disclaimer right off the bat. We flew in from Bali. So the airfare will be most relevant for those flying from Southeast Asia. The rest of the expenses can be used as a solid benchmark. ✈️ Flights 97,750₽ for two ($1,150) These were tickets for Bali - Tokyo, Osaka - Bali. 🏨 Hotels We spent about 99,000₽ ($1,165) on accommodation Tokyo - 44,500₽ (14,800₽ ($174)/night) Kyoto - 30,165₽ (15,080₽ ($177)/night) Fujiyoshida - 12,250₽ ($144) Osaka - 12,200₽ ($143.50) This is where the biggest surprise awaited us. We went right after cherry blossom season, hoping the tourist crowds would thin out and prices would drop a bit. But this summer, I checked the prices for the exact same hotels on Trip.com again. Most of them were going for just 3.5-4.5 thousand rubles ($44-56) a night instead of our 12-15 thousand ($144-180). And that was without the JR Pass. Before the trip, I ran the numbers several times to see if it was worth buying. In the end, two JR Passes would have cost more than booking all our tickets individually. If you have a similar itinerary (more details in a post on my profile), I highly recommend calculating the cost of regular tickets first before making a decision. 🍜 Food We spent ~38,000₽ ($447) in a week. We didn't budget strictly, but we didn't eat at pricey restaurants either. We had breakfast at Denny’s, lunched at small cafes, and sometimes grabbed ready-to-eat meals from 7-Eleven. By the way, Japanese konbini (convenience stores) turned out to be way more exciting than I expected😍. You can easily put together a full meal there for a very reasonable price. At the very least, you have to try the strawberry sandwiches at 7/11🤤🤤🤤 💰 What was the total? For a week for two: ≈ 264,000₽ or about $3,100 at the exchange rate at the time. If you subtract the international flights, the actual Japan trip came out to about: 166,500₽ for two (~ $1,950) That’s roughly 83,000 rubles (under $1,000) per person for a week. How much should you budget for the trip? If you're not flying during peak season, I'd aim for roughly these amounts, excluding international flights: 💰 Budget-friendly From 60,000-70,000₽ ($875) per person a week. 💰 Comfortable, like our trip Around 80,000-100,000₽ ($1,250) per person. 💰 If you want upscale hotels, more entertainment, and dining, the budget is truly the limit) The most unexpected discovery after the trip was just how drastically the season affects your bottom line. In May 2026, I needed a place to stay in Tokyo for a week and had to decide on the right neighborhood. I was looking for something affordable yet comfortable (I’m perfectly fine with capsule hotels, but for a night or two at most). So, my main search criteria were: 1️⃣ a private space—either a room or an apartment, 2️⃣ a 20-30 minute commute to the city center via public transit, and 3️⃣ a nightly rate of no more than 8,000–10,000 JPY (about 4,000–5,000 RUB). 📍 I ended up picking Edogawa, specifically the area around Kasai Station. It’s a quiet neighborhood equipped with all the essential infrastructure for daily life. It only takes a quick 20-minute subway ride to get downtown. 🚍 Right next to Kasai Station is a bus terminal where you can catch a comfortable ride to ✈️ Haneda Airport in 20-40 minutes (depending on traffic) for 1,200 JPY, to ✈️ Narita Airport in about an hour for 1,800 JPY, and to Tokyo Disney Resort in just 20-30 minutes. 🛒 There’s a large supermarket nearby and tons of konbini (convenience stores) all around. 🎪 Local entertainment includes Kasai Rinkai Park—a massive green park right by the bay with a giant Ferris wheel and an aquarium—as well as the free Edogawa Natural Zoo. 🛋️ I stayed at the KAIKIN-Nakakasai apartments, just a leisurely 10-minute stroll to the subway. The perks included self check-in (you get an entry PIN code in advance), a decently sized room for the price, a balcony, and it was quite clean. Tested! Approved! Highly rated!

After our first trip, I realized that our route looked fine on the map, but in reality, we lost almost a day on transfers. We started in Tokyo, then went to Fujiyoshida, and from there, with several transfers, we made our way to Kyoto. We only had one day left for Kyoto, and we only learned about Nara when we ran out of time. The second time, I would have gone the other way: Osaka → Nara → Kyoto → Tokyo → Fuji → Tokyo And I would have budgeted eight to ten days for the whole trip. Let me clarify right away: we didn't go to Nara. I'm adding it to the itinerary because it's on the way from Osaka to Kyoto, and we later regretted skipping it. Day 1. Osaka What to see: 📍 Osaka Castle and Park 📍 Namba Yasaka Shrine with its huge lion head 📍 Dotonbori in the evening 📍 Shinsaibashi 📍 Shinsekai or Umeda Sky Building I don't think you need to cram everything here at once. You can choose three or four places and stroll around leisurely. We also only had one day in Osaka. I liked it less than Kyoto and Tokyo, but it's possible we just arrived tired and saw it too quickly. Day 2. Nara From Osaka, you can go to Nara in the morning, leave your luggage in storage, and then transfer to Kyoto in the evening. What to see: 📍 Nara Park 📍 Todai-ji 📍 Kasuga Taisha 📍 Kofuku-ji 📍 Naramachi, if you have time The main reason to include Nara here is simple: it's on the way, and there are the cutest deer! You won't have to go back separately. Day 3. Eastern Kyoto I would leave at least two full days for Kyoto. And if the trip is ten days, then even three. On the first day: 📍 Fushimi Inari Taisha 📍 Kiyomizu-dera 📍 Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka 📍 Yasaka Shrine 📍 Gion District 📍 Pontocho in the evening It's best to get up early in Kyoto. At seven or eight in the morning, you can still walk around normally, but by lunchtime, the popular spots are already packed. I wouldn't add too many temples. After a few, they start to blend together, and the streets of Kyoto themselves are more memorable to me. Day 4. Western Kyoto On the second day: 📍 Arashiyama Bamboo Grove 📍 Tenryu-ji 📍 Togetsukyo Bridge 📍 Kinkaku-ji 📍 Nishiki Market But even here, you don't have to go through the entire list. For example, you could go to Arashiyama in the morning, then return to the center, and leave the afternoon to an open-ended plan. Day 5. Another day in Kyoto or transfer to Tokyo If you have eight days, you can explore Kyoto a little more in the morning and then head to Tokyo after lunch. If you have ten, I would leave another full day here. You can see what you didn't have time to see earlier, choose lesser-known temples, just stroll through the residential streets, or go to Uji. We only spent one day in Kyoto, and now it's the place I most want to return to. Day 6. Shibuya, Harajuku, and Shinjuku First day in Tokyo: 📍 Shibuya Crossing 📍 Hachiko Monument 📍 Shibuya Sky 📍 Meiji Jingu 📍 Harajuku 📍 Cat Street 📍 Shinjuku and Kabukicho in the evening It's better to combine neighboring areas rather than travel from one end of Tokyo to the other. We only saw a small part of the city in three days, even though we walked almost constantly. Day 7. Asakusa and Akihabara Second day in Tokyo: 📍 Senso-ji 📍 Kaminarimon Gate 📍 Nakamise Street 📍 Ueno Park or Ameyoko Market 📍 Akihabara 📍 Ginza in the evening Senso-ji is also best seen in the morning. We arrived in the afternoon, and there were a lot of people there. Day 8. teamLab, Odaiba, or a free day in Tokyo I wouldn't completely miss this day. You can choose: 📍 teamLab Borderless or teamLab Planets 📍 Tokyo Skytree 📍 Tokyo Tower 📍 Odaiba 📍 museums 📍 shopping 📍 a neighborhood you liked on previous days It's best to buy teamLab tickets in advance. We decided on our trip literally a few days before departure and were unable to make it. Day 9. Fuji, if the weather is good It's best to reserve a separate day for Fuji towards the end of your trip. You can choose: 📍 Fujiyoshida 📍 Chureito Pagoda 📍 Kawaguchiko I would check the forecast literally the day before. We arrived in Fujiyoshida in the rain, spent the night, and left the next day without seeing the mountain. Therefore, if the weather is bad, it's best not to go at all and reserve this day for Tokyo, Kamakura, or Yokohama. Day 10. Spare Day or Departure If you managed to see Fuji earlier, you can leave the tenth day free. Tickets can be purchased from ticket machines or at the station. 4️⃣ Tokyo – Fuji (Lake Kawaguchiko) From Tokyo, you can reach Lake Kawaguchiko, with its views of Mount Fuji, by bus or train. Tickets can be purchased online.
