Maizuru Park, Fukuoka. Nationally designated historic site "Korokan Ruins Exhibition Hall"
This is the nationally designated historic site "Kourokukan Ruins Exhibition Hall" in Maizuru Park, Fukuoka.
Kourokukan was a diplomatic facility during the Asuka, Nara, and Heian periods.
It was used as a guesthouse for Chinese and Korean visitors, and also as accommodation for Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty and Silla.
It was in operation for about 400 years!
It disappeared in 1047 and its location was unknown, but in 1987, the remains were discovered during renovation work on the outfield seats at Heiwadai Baseball Stadium, and you can still see the excavation work being carried out inside the facility.
You can get up close to the excavation work, and many of the excavated materials are on display inside the museum.
There are similar facilities in Kyoto and Osaka, but this is the only one that has been designated by the government, so it is a facility where you can get up close and personal with the valuable materials.
