What is the Gion Festival? -The festival will be held for a month- The Gion Festival is a festival of Yasaka Shrine, and the festivities take place over a period of about one month, starting with the "Kichipuiri" ceremony on July 1st and ending with the "Eki Shrine Summer Festival" on July 31st. The highlights of the festival are the portable shrine procession of Yasaka Shrine and the procession of 34 Yamahoko floats on July 17th and 24th. The "Yamahoko Float Event of the Kyoto Gion Festival" is also registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. - Yamahoko Parade - The highlight is the parade The highlight of the Gion Festival is the Yamahoko Procession, where the floats and hoko floats pass through the streets as the Gion Bayashi music of Konchikichin resonates in the summer sky. The first festival departs from Shijo Karasuma, while the second festival departs from Karasuma Oike. There are many highlights, such as the "Kuji-aratame" (lottery change), which confirms the order of the procession, and the dynamic "Tsuji-mawashi" (traditional Japanese square). The beauty of the decorations on the floats, called kakezōbutsu, which include beautiful embroidery and imported textiles, is also stunning. A magnificent and splendid pageant unfolds, sometimes referred to as a "moving art museum." *There will be paid seating on Oike-dori Street, all of which will be reserved seats.
