#Lamma Island Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Lamma is Fabulous!
Attraction name: Lamma Island
Location: Hong Kong, China
Lamma island is one of the most secluded places in Hong Kong. Take a short ferry from Central or Aberdeen to one of the ports in Lamma. You can enjoy many of the famous walkable hikes on the island where you will be treated to scenic views and fresh air.
For lunch, visit one of the towns nearby the ferry ports for delicious seafood. In order to get away from the busyness of Hong Kong island, I recommend a day trip to Lamma.

B&B Beer & Babble Western Restaurant
#hongkongtrip
Located at Yong Shue Wan Main Street, Lamma Island, Hong Kong, a few minutes walk from the ferry.
It is beautifully western decorated with red brick walls and hanging old time photos of Hong Kong. The back of restaurant facing to the harbour where dining tables are with a great view afar of the ferry pier.
It was nice and relax during weekdays with nice music on. Offering set lunch menu, huge portion of Chicken with veggies and potato’s came with a soup and a drink. The price is reasonable.
Reachable from Hong Kong by ferry from Central Pier no. 4.

Lamma island
I can't tell that it's worth seeing but if you have already visited the most famous sightseeing in Hong Kong and wanna be distracted from crowded places for a bit , you can take a ferry at the Pier 4 from the Central station to Lamma island .
it will take you 40 minutes to go there .
the island is a little bit dirty itself , especially the beach 😞 but the view is still picturesque .
the only problem you might face is a queue on the way back , we didn't expect that , because during our walk on this island we met just few people , where they were hiding we have no idea 😂 , probably they were saying in the seafood restaurants next to the piers 🤭

SPENDING A DAY ON YUNG SHUE WAN, LAMMA ISLAND, HONG KONG
HUNG SHING YE BEACH, LAMMA ISLAND
The beaches on Yung Shue Wan are a bit of a walk from the main street (about 20-30 minutes depending on walking speed and distractions) and through the wilderness of Lamma.
Lamma Island is served by two main ferry terminals, Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan. Ferries between Central and Yung Shue Wan run every 20-30 minutes in the morning and evening, and every 45-60 minutes during the daytime. The journey takes about 30 minutes.
And island with a lot of character
In a city of Islands offering everything from sunset hiking, golden beaches and abandoned villages, it can be difficult to know which of Hong Kong’s many many islands to visit next. With an expansive and convenient ferry service, going to and from these Islands is quick, easy and relatively cheap, then choosing where to go next is a great dilemma to have.
Lamma Island, Hong Kong is a quiet and pleasant place with a laid-back feel. People come to the island to enjoy walking on trails. If you go on a Sunday or holiday, you are likely to see many locals. On Lamma Island, there is a walking trail at one end that leads to the traditional fishing village of Sok Kwu Wan, and the other end is the laid back and multicultural village of Yung Shue Wan, where visitors can find international cuisine and handicrafts. Conveniently located just a 40-minute ferry ride from the city, Lamma Island has the charms of Western and Chinese island life, where West meet East. It is a must for everybody’s itinerary. The trail which is known as the “Lamma Island Family Walk” is a great way to see the Island and is one of Hong Kong’s most loved trails.
It is a gentle hike and relatively easy as it is paved and well-marked, with even refreshment stops and many resting points along the way.
There are some ups and downs and some stairs and steep hikes if you wander out to the many outlook posts, just take your time
You will walk along the water, through the forests and lots of vegetation, little temples, pavillions, with many fantastic views… be sure to stop frequently and take it all in… (and try to ignore the ugly power plant that is definitely an eye sore)
You can start the day with the ferry to Yung Shue Wan, explore the town a bit before embarking on the light hike to Sok Kwu Wan passing through fantastic vistas of beaches, hills, local temples… stopping for a dip in the ocean or a break at the breezy pavilions along the way… then enjoy a nice seafood lunch or dinner before catching the ferry back to town. Or you could do it in reverse as well.
If time is short, skip the hike and stick to either side. The ferry rides are worth it just for the views, both of the majestic Hong Kong Island skyline, and the lush greenery of the mountains as you approach Lamma. And once there, enjoy a nice seafood dinner, and perhaps a breathtaking sunset…
The beach of course is a must see here and it is almost unmissable since it is located between the two ferry piers and easily reached from either. Not the biggest beach but very clean and with soft sand and lapping ocean waves its perfect for a dip or a sunbath. It is rarely too busy here and gives you a chance to take a break from hectic life and just relax. The beach has changing rooms and toilets which are functional and adequate to use.
The Lamma island pig is probably the most photographed thing on the whole island. Muraled onto a random building this splash of colour really jumps out at you as

A beautiful place without dusty and smoke
Take a ferry from Central pier 5. This is one of the beautiful island you have to travel. About 20 minutes for the ferry and 10 minutes walk down to the Main Street of Ying Shui Wan, you will found different kinds of restaurants like Spain,Italian…
If you like to take a swim you can go to the beach name .. I forgot 😂
Best restaurant with sunset
Fun and food
Lamma is an island around 45-60mins away by ferry from Central. There are two main ferry piers on the island; one on the northern shore and the other towards the middle of the island. The northern one, Yung Shue Wan, is more popular and busy. Nonetheless, it is quite common to go into one and leave from the other.
As such, Lamma is a lovely island to go for a hike. There are various hiking trails and they bring you to different points of the island. They aren't difficult by any standards and you'll have restaurants and stores in the nearby villages.
More importantly, Lamma island is great for seafood. It is extreme fresh and tasty and there'll be something for everyone. On the Sok Kwu Wan Pier, seafood restaurants line the street so you'll never be short of choice. Have a meal here in the outside overlooking the sea in a very comfortable setting.
Overall Lamma is a great hop away from the busyness of HK. You'll be able to get some good hiking done while also eating great and fresh seafood. Definitely recommend if you want some quiet and great food! #weekendfun #island #Lamma #HK
Great Places to Visit in Hong Kong: Lamma Island
Lamma Island is the fourth largest island in Hong Kong. It got its name because it is located to the south of Hong Kong and its shape resembles the character '丫', which is pronounced as 'ya' in Chinese, hence the name Lamma Island. Transportation to and from the island relies entirely on ferries. It takes 40 minutes to travel from Central Pier No. 4 to Sok Kwu Wan, and the ticket price on holidays is $19. The itinerary introduced here allows you to enjoy the scenery on both the north and south sides of Lamma Island. After arriving at Sok Kwu Wan, you will walk along the Lamma Island Family Trail to Yung Shue Wan, passing by Tin Hau Temple, Kamikaze Caves, Hung Shing Yeh Beach, and then stroll around Yung Shue Wan Main Street and have dinner.
Lamma Island is mostly mountainous, with a population of about six thousand people, most of whom live in the relatively flat northern area of Yung Shue Wan, which is suitable for farming. However, there are also residents living in Sok Kwu Wan in the south.
Outlying Islands - Away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong city
Hong Kong Outlying Islands Tour
🏖️ Leave the bustling Hong Kong urban area and take a boat to Lamma Island. Lamma Island is the largest outlying island beyond Hong Kong Island. Due to its convenient transportation, it only takes 25 minutes by boat to Central, making it the most visited outlying island by tourists. Hung Shing Yeh Beach is the most important attraction on Lamma Island, and visitors to the island will go there to play in the water and eat seafood. It takes 20 minutes to walk from Yung Shue Wan Pier to Hung Shing Yeh Beach; the island's leisure trail 'Lamma Island Family Walk' connects Yung Shue Wan Pier with Sok Kwu Wan Pier and passes by Hung Shing Yeh Beach.
🚉 Transportation: Take the MTR to Central Station Exit A, walk across the footbridge to Pier No. 4 to take the ferry. There are two piers on Lamma Island for disembarking, Sok Kwu Wan (20 minutes, HKD 17/person) and Yung Shue Wan (30 minutes, HKD 22/person)
📝 Tips:
① The ferry's air conditioning is particularly cold, it is recommended to bring a long-sleeved shirt.
② For a leisurely stroll around the outlying islands, it is recommended to wear comfortable flat shoes for ease.
🏝️ Cheung Chau Island is the most beautiful outlying island in Hong Kong. It is also a classic filming location for TVB dramas. It still retains the characteristics of a fishing port and is suitable for a slow-paced lifestyle. There are no skyscrapers or hurried crowds, just tranquil fishing villages and leisurely passers-by. Take a walk on the island, space out on the beach, and you can also find handicrafts from various places in some small shops.
👍 Highly recommended:
There is a food street in the central area with a variety of snacks such as big fish balls, glutinous rice dumplings, and watermelon ice. Additionally, there are many seafood restaurants along the seaside where you can have seafood for dinner.
🚲 There are many shops along the seaside near the pier where you can rent bicycles, with prices generally the same. Approximately HKD 15 per bike per hour, there is also a package of 3 hours for HKD 40!
✅ Must experience:
The beaches by the sea and the church, sea views, Cheung Po Tsai Cave, etc. on the mountain are all very worthwhile places to visit.
🌟 About Transportation
Take the MTR from Hong Kong Station Exit F, go through the pedestrian footbridge to
Central Pier No. 5 to depart. Slow boat ticket $14.2, fast boat ticket $28 (cash and Octopus card only)
It's better to buy a fast boat ticket, as there are more frequent departures, air conditioning, faster speed, and comfort!
📝 Tips:
① It is recommended to exchange more cash, as cash is more commonly used on the island, and only a few shops accept WeChat or Alipay.
② Bicycles cannot be ridden on the island on weekends
A decade of unchanged slow-paced life in a fishing village | A trip to Lamma Island, Hong Kong
| A trip to Lamma Island, Hong Kong. As time goes by, it's surprising that Lamma Island has remained unchanged for ten years, still without any cars, hence the local area retains its simplicity, and time seems to stand still here.
·
As an outlying island less than half an hour's ferry ride from the city, it has remained a small fishing village for so many years. It is said that after several rounds of voting by the islanders on whether to allow cars, the majority chose to live with more primitive means of transportation (walking, cycling, etc.), thus preserving the island's unspoiled ecology. Here, you can truly experience the meaning of 'slow living'.
·
🚢| Transportation:
You can take a ferry directly to Yung Shue Wan or Sok Kwu Wan from Central Pier No. 4.
The fare with an Octopus card is HKD 18.6. The last ferry on Friday is at 00:15, and we took the 23:30 one. During the day, there is a ferry every half hour, and at night, every hour. It takes 25 minutes to get to Yung Shue Wan, and Sok Kwu Wan is a bit further.
🍜| Dining:
Choi's Snack. HKD 7 for a soy milk ice, HKD 55 for a three-meat noodle dish. They also have a beautiful pear flower cat.
🏠| Accommodation:
Leisure Holiday House, HKD 560/night, there are also options below 500, but smaller in size. Guesthouse check-in is only until 23:00, and a fee of HKD 200 is charged for check-ins after 23:00 (as a night service fee for the guesthouse staff's overtime).
📸| Route:
If you're only playing for half a day, you can choose between Yung Shue Wan or Sok Kwu Wan. They are 5km apart, and it takes 1 hour to walk between them.
·
🏖Yung Shue Wan's sea water is quite cool, and few people swim. There are free showers, toilets, and changing rooms by the beach, but the showers do not have hot water, and you need to bring your own shower gel and shampoo.
⛰Lamma Island is small, and it may not meet your expectations. It's not convenient or refined, but you can feel the way life originally was.
Strolling through the fishing village island, this is a different Hong Kong
Lamma Island is the third largest island after Lantau Island and Hong Kong Island, and it is also the outlying island closest to Hong Kong Island. Unlike the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong Island, this place is serene. Fishermen, farmers, and Western immigrants live a unique rural life here, with lush green mountains behind them and the majestic sea in front. There are also waterfront restaurants and seafood houses that make one unconsciously attracted by this tranquil atmosphere.
There are two villages on the island, one in the north called 'Yung Shue Wan' and the other on the other side of the mountain called 'Sok Kwu Wan'. They are also the stops for the ferry⛴️ service to and from Central Pier No. 4, with a journey time of just 30 minutes and an affordable fare.
If you come to Hong Kong and want to experience a different Hong Kong-style life, I recommend you to wear light clothing to 'Lamma Island'. Spend about half a day walking around, climbing mountains🧗🏻♀️, watching the sea on the beach🌊, and feeling this different kind of tranquility.

Lamma mia, an authentic garden of HK
During weekends or public holidays, Hong Kongers like going to rural areas for hiking or picnic. Lamma is one of the famous islands that we like to set our footprints in. Unlike other islands, Lamma community formed by both locals and expats, the expats bring the island more in the way of upcycling and nature loving living style. Other than the living style, they also have some fantastic restaurants for seafood and cafes for lovely coffee.
Today, I brought my painting kit for some nature drawing. #lamma #Natureloving #hiking

You must visit Hong Kong's outlying island - Lamma Island
From Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan, the 8-kilometer hike left blisters on the little hiker's feet, so she treated herself to giant mantis shrimps and lobsters as thick as her arm. However, she still didn't encounter Chow Yun-fat. After returning to Hong Kong, she went to Kennedy Town, to the tram terminus...
At sunset, she hopped on a bus going who-knows-where, and amidst the clanging, she got lost in the city where the lights were dimming...
It's Lamma Island is situated only 3km off the south west coast of Hong Kong Island, has a free-spirited, multicultural vibe and is home to hipsters and creative types. Indie boutiques, craft stores and mellow cafes line Yung Shue Wan Main Street.
I love this place like a heaven

Lamma Island Hong Kong Must Visit
A must if in Hong Kong, just 39 minutes in ferry from Kowloon and only 25 HK Dollar. It is full of restaurants and cute beaches. Amazing for hiking camping and enjoying a bit of fresh air out of HK city!
Hong Kong Travel (Super Comprehensive Guide)
1. If you want to eat at some specialty small shops, you still need to exchange cash.
2. There is a handling fee for the short-term return of the Octopus card. If you can accept it, it is recommended to apply for it, and the itinerary will be smoother. The subway involves ports, and the cross-sea part will indeed be more expensive. The subway price list will be put at the end of the picture for reference.
Minibuses require Octopus cards, drive very fast, and you need to speak up when getting off. If you come to Hong Kong for the first time and your Cantonese is not good, it's best not to choose!
3. Buy a data package according to the operator before going through the customs. Don't believe the subway cost of a certain high map.
4. If you come to Hong Kong for the first time, it is recommended to go to Lantau Island, Victoria Peak, and Golden Bauhinia Square. If you have been here multiple times, you can choose Lamma Island, Shek O, Cheung Chau Island and other places.
5. Most of the tea restaurants are quite ordinary, and the prices are not so beautiful. There is no need to follow the internet celebrities. Personally, I prefer to choose Tim Ho Wan, beef brisket noodles, Genki, Sushi Express, Japanese barbecue shops in Hong Kong. Although there are chains in the mainland, the ones in Hong Kong are better!
6. The very popular Kennedy Town on the Internet is actually taking pictures on the wire mesh of the basketball court. It is a check-in point that tests the lens. It is indeed very photogenic. If you are close, you can come and see, if you are far away, there is no need to make a special trip.
7. Remember to bring a power bank when you come to Hong Kong
8. You still need a black code to go through customs, remember to prepare it in advance on the day of departure.
9. If you come to Hong Kong for the first time, it is recommended to put shopping aside, the current advantage is not great, and in this city with an average of 23,000 steps per day, it is indeed more physically exhausting.
10. I personally love Hong Kong Disneyland, squatting little foxes and sticking little foxes are more friendly, don't miss it if you like it. Ocean Park is also a good choice, if you like small animals, it is recommended to go, and the transportation is very convenient.
11. If the weather is good, Lantau Island and Victoria Peak are worth experiencing, but the queue is very tiring during holidays. You can adapt to the situation. When there are many people, you can choose to take a bus up and down the mountain, which is faster and the price is better.

Stroll through Hong Kong's Lamma Island, exercise while exploring the whole island, and enjoy the mountains and sea.
Took a boat from Central to Yung Shue Wan, and half of the passengers were foreigners with various skin colors. I don't know if they were going to play or live on the island. There is a street by the pier, where you can eat, drink and have fun. It's crowded on weekends, so make sure to eat enough and prepare well. Once you choose the road up the mountain, there is no fork, you can only keep going forward to another pier or return the same way. As a light hiking route, the scenery is beautiful along the way. You can see a 270° sea view at the top of the mountain. There are basically no tall trees blocking the mountain road, so be sure to protect yourself from the sun. Walking through the whole island requires physical strength, so do it within your limits.
Lamma Island | A must-visit spot in Hong Kong for taking photos
