Unveiling the Treasures of Macau's Rich History
#wecreate
Macau Museum stands as a testament to the city's vibrant history and diverse cultural heritage. Housed within the historic Mount Fortress, this captivating museum offers visitors an immersive journey through time, exploring the unique blend of Eastern and Western influences that have shaped Macau's identity. From archaeological artifacts to interactive exhibits, the Macau Museum provides a comprehensive insight into the city's rich past and its significance as a cultural crossroads.
The Macau Museum is located within the formidable Mount Fortress, a structure that played a crucial role in the defense of the city during colonial times. This fortress, originally built in the 17th century, witnessed pivotal moments in Macau's history. It offers a historical backdrop that sets the stage for the museum's exploration of the city's past. By preserving and showcasing Macau's heritage, the museum aims to educate visitors about the city's rich history, from its humble beginnings as a fishing village to its status as a global trading port and a melting pot of cultures.
Macau Museum on the Hill
The Macau Museum is located close to the Ruins of St Paul's. It is a nice place to visit after you take a walk at the ruins. Some say the best way to understand a city is through their museum. There are 3 storeys in the museum. The first level is about the history of Macau. The second level is my favourite part, display of arts and cultural things. The third floor is about contemporary social conditions. You could see the influence of Portuguese and Chinese cultures here. When you come out from the 3rd level, you will reach the Fortaleza do Monte. From here, you can see the panoramic views of Macau.
Address: 112 Praceta do Museu de Macau, Macao. Located in the Garden of the Surrounding of Monte Fort
Ambiance/Facilities: 8/10

Sunrise at Fortaleza do Monte
Woke-up early to witness a beautiful sunrise at Mount Fortress or also know as the Monte Forte/ official name Fortaleza do Monte. The walk going up at the Mount Fortress is refreshing, and surely you will witness a beautiful sunrise.
The Fortaleza do Monte is one of the historical landmark in Macau. You can also enter and go up through the Macau Museum and see a beautiful and historical collection while heading to the fortress.
A lot of locals also wake up early to do some exercise/ walking and jogging at the the fortress, since the air and view is relaxing.
Don’t forget to visit the fortress when you visit Macau. The hike is worth the view. #mytripvlog #tripblazers
FORTALEZA DO MONTE: Home of the Macau Museum
Built in 1626, Fortaleza do Monte was for many years the hub of Portugal's military presence in this part of China, eventually serving as the governor's residence, a role it performed until 1749.
Today, this former fortress houses the three-story Macau Museum, dedicated to the archaeology and anthropology of Macau with an emphasis on how the Chinese, Portuguese, and Macanese have come to live and work together.
Also worth visiting is the Mount Fortress Garden, a welcome respite with its pleasant moat-like pond and flower beds, and the Moorish-style Mansão Evocativa de Sun Yat-Sen, a mansion built in memory of Sun Yat-sen, founder of the first Chinese Republic. Another related site is Sun Yat Sen Park with its beautiful gardens, a Victorian greenhouse, and an aviary.
#macaumusuem
If you want to understand the historical and cultural customs combining Chinese and western elements in Macau, you cannot miss Macau Museum. Located on the hill of the Fortaleza do Monte, it offers a panoramic view of the city. While the first and second floors are underground, from the third floor you can see the whole city at a glance.
This was an interesting little museum in the old town of Macau. It’s cheap to get in and it’s worth a look, but it’s not a must do by any measure. It kind of gives you an overview of Macau history including contemporary history. And they have a re-creation of a typical Macau Street scene.
#givethanks
If you want to know more about Macau, how can you miss the Macau Museum? The Macao Museum was on the fortification platform behind the landmark of St. Paul in Macau. It ised to be a military centre. It was not until 1998 that it was changed into a museum. It is a good place to learn about Macau. It takes 15 Australian dollars to go to the museum. Credit cards or Alipay cannot be used here. The museum only accepts payment in cash. There are no toilets in the museum. You can take pictures inside the museum, but be sure not to use the flash.
Macau Exhibition | A Macau History Exhibition Suitable for Families
The permanent exhibitions at the Macau Museum are rich and can be roughly divided into two threads according to my summary: and . is the cause, and is the result. It is the rich and unique history that has created Macau's diverse cultural traditions.
Today, let's briefly talk about the part of the exhibition.
🗺️Geographical Clues🗺️
One well-known and undeniable fact is that Macau has a long history of colonization. During the colonial period, a large amount of foreign cultures, led by Portugal 🇵🇹, poured into Macau.
⚠️Upon entering the museum, there is an interesting corridor. It presents a condensed form of cultural representative content from ancient times to the present; what's more impressive is that the left and right sides of the corridor respectively display the local Chinese 🇨🇳 culture of Macau and the foreign cultures, corresponding one by one, offering an excellent viewing experience.
🧿The Underestimated Length of History🧿
Macau's human history began in the Stone Age.
Though small in size, it has been a place of human activity for thousands of years, something my narrow knowledge did not anticipate.
The long history through the colonial period to the thriving post-handover period, the combination of cultural relics and models makes the exhibition more interesting.
🖼️The Overlooked Historical Status🖼️
Mainly the part about the Maritime Silk Road. As an important port city, Macau should indeed be an important node on the Maritime Silk Road. Based on trade exchanges, the already culturally diverse Macau was infused with even more elements, reflecting inclusiveness and integration on various levels.
📝Simple Summary📝
If the exhibition only displayed cultural relics, it would be somewhat dull. The logic of the exhibition here, combining cultural relics with model explanations, is both interesting and valuable, and well worth a closer look.
Macao Museum—A History of East-West Cultural Exchange
The Macao Museum is located at No. 112, Praceta do Museu de Macau, in the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. It is a comprehensive museum with a total area of 2,800 square meters and an actual exhibition area of about 2,100 square meters. It was completed and opened to the public on April 19, 1998, with the ribbon-cutting ceremony presided over by the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Guterres.
The Macao Museum is mainly divided into three floors. The first floor displays the early history of Macao, the second floor showcases Macanese folk art and traditions, and the third floor exhibits contemporary Macanese items. The museum utilizes high-tech methods such as three-dimensional displays, light, sound, and images, and employs replicas and models to enhance the display effect. Its main collections include calligraphy and paintings, the match industry, export porcelain, folk rituals, the Hac Sa archaeological site on Coloane, and items from the firecracker industry.
Macau Exhibition | The unexpectedly impressive Macau Museum on Mount Fortress
The Macau Museum is actually on top of the big fortress, with several levels up and down, and the exhibits and exhibitions are in no way inferior to those on the mainland.
🗺️First, let's talk about the location🗺️
You can definitely find St. Paul's, and not far from St. Paul's is the big fortress, and on top of the fortress is the entrance to the museum.
🌟Practical Information🌟
🎫Ticket Price🎫: Adults 15 MOP, students 8 MOP, very cheap. Free admission for those under 1 year old and over 65 with ID~
⏰Opening Hours⏰: Closed on Mondays, open from 10-18 o'clock the rest of the time.
⚠️Something Special⚠️: No entry after 17:30; no need to book in advance, just buy tickets on-site~
🖼️Overall Impression🖼️
Honestly, it kind of subverted my understanding, the history starting from the Stone Age is so flavorful.
Macau's several hundred years of special history has created a unique Macau culture and tradition, where 【History】 is the cause and 【Culture】 is the expression, and this is the basic logic of the museum.
♥️Worth Paying Attention♥️
1️⃣【History】 and 【Culture】 are the two important threads to follow when visiting here, and the exhibitions are also roughly displayed according to these two perspectives.
2️⃣In addition to the regular exhibitions, there are also some temporary exhibitions, such as the 【Land Culture】 related exhibition I encountered.
3️⃣Many parts of the exhibition are interactive, which is very suitable for parent-child tours.
📝To Sum Up📝
This article briefly summarizes the information about the Macau Museum, and there will be two more articles discussing the exhibition content later.

Macau tourist attractions, all sorted with a mini-program!
Macau is small, but it's rich in cultural and sightseeing spots, such as world heritage sites, historical buildings, museums, churches, temples, parks, and more. Details of the attractions can be found on the mini-program of the , which is very convenient👏
After organizing the places I want to visit, I found that 90% of them are on the Macau Peninsula. Staying here would offer a great experience. The Sofitel at Ponte 16, located on the banks of the Pearl River, is also one of the nearby high-rise buildings. From the windows of the rooms, you can see the entire Macau Peninsula, and all the stories of Macau are within sight📷
🤓Fugu Bao says, 'The buildings here grow so densely, but the deliciousness is in these 2-meter-wide alleys!' When did you start to understand this...
Every year, the eighth day of the fourth lunar month is Macau's Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival , the Drunken Dragon Festival. I wasn't sure if it would be held before coming, so I took my chances. Fortunately, the weather was nice, and I saw the entire event at the Largo do Senado. There were special instruments and a drunken sacrificial dance, different from the traditional dragon dance. Macau's 'Drunken Dragon' only has the dragon head and tail, with the dancers staggering as if drunk, while others accompany them and pour drinks along the way. It looks very interesting. Participants of all ages were involved, and I didn't expect the youth of Macau to be interested in intangible cultural heritage.
Largo do Senado is a very central location in the old town, and it's also where many of Macau's must-visit attractions are densely located, such as the Ruins of St. Paul's, the Church of St. Dominic, the Monte Fort, the Macau Museum...
And for Fugu Bao, the tech-savvy content is also attractive. The Macau Science Center is a must-visit, and if you're interested in racing, the Grand Prix Museum is also a great place.
In June, the midday temperature in Macau is already quite hot, and there's nothing more relaxing than soaking in the hotel pool , having afternoon tea under the shade of trees, playing in the water, and watching the sunset over Macau Island. The hotel's restaurants are also very good, where you can taste romantic French cuisine at Prive or authentic Cantonese dishes at the Chinese restaurant, which is also popular with local residents for dim sum at noon .
Macau | Scenic Walk in the Old Town Area - Monte Fort Park
🚗 The Historic Centre of Macau, located on the Macau Peninsula of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, centers around the old city of Macau and connects more than 20 historical buildings. The area of the historic district extends from the Mount Fortress in the east to the Inner Harbour Pier near San Ma Lo in the west, from the A-Ma Temple in the south to the Camoes Park in the north. The construction of the various buildings in this architectural complex dates from the Ming Dynasty to the Republic of China, spanning over 400 years.
🚗 Take the light rail to the Barrier Gate Station 🚇 A-Ma Temple 🚶 A-Ma Temple 🚶 Macau Old Town (Ruins of St. Paul's, Macau Museum, Guia Lighthouse, Monte Fort Park, Senado Square). Alternatively, you can take bus 26 directly from The Londoner to the vicinity of the Ruins of St. Paul's.
🚗 I seem to remember seeing somewhere that it should be a World Cultural Heritage site, but to be honest, it didn't feel very impressive. The surrounding attractions are quite concentrated, but they are built on a hill, and some places require climbing stairs. It feels quite hot at noon, but there is also a large flow of people, and the weather does not seem to affect people's enthusiasm at all.
🚗 Many small shops in the surrounding streets are quite good, and some streets will be temporarily turned into pedestrian lanes. There's a lot of food, and most of it can be paid for with a mobile phone.
To understand a city, start with its museums | The Macao Museum, a family-friendly destination for a day out
The most direct way to understand a city is to visit its museums. The Macao Museum is located in the old city area of the Macao Peninsula, which is a concentrated area of attractions. It is right next to the Ruins of St. Paul's, and you can get there by taking the escalator next to it. There is also a large fort nearby.
🍀 The Macao Museum is not large but very enjoyable to visit, divided into three floors:
The first floor exhibits Macao's early history, the trade between the Chinese and Portuguese in Macao, their religious and cultural contacts, and the Macao culture that has gradually formed over hundreds of years; the second floor is the Macao Folk Art and Tradition Exhibition Area, displaying Macao's traditional culture, including folk art, religious ceremonies, and folk celebrations; the third floor shows the urban appearance of Macao today and the characteristics of the residents' lives, as well as literary works and artworks themed on Macao.
🍀 Some tips for visiting:
1⃣️ There is a free drinking water facility. There is a water dispenser opposite the entrance where the escalator comes up, in the direction of the restrooms, where you can drink and refill water for free, just bring your own bottle.
2⃣️ There is a small stand at the exit on the third floor of the museum where you can get a free stamp (the fort's stamp), don't miss it if you bring your own notebook!
3⃣️ The museum is not large and takes about 1-2 hours to visit in total.

Walking in Macau for 9 hours, I'll tell you all the pitfalls and thunder points
【First Chatter】
I went to Macau for a day, and many friends asked me about my feelings: The most impressive feeling that day was the crowding and loneliness.
The crowding is a description of the city, feeling that there are 10 people standing in one square meter; loneliness is because there are multiple languages being spoken around you, but none of them you understand, in Macau I felt like I was alone.
【On the Road: Customs Return】
🛻 Customs & Return
Enter from Zhuhai Gongbei Port (6 am-1 am), follow the instructions all the way, now you don't need to declare your health status, report separately if there are exceptions. The whole process is to swipe the pass, fingerprint, exit the customs and get the voucher, fingerprint, fast customs clearance.
❗️Lesson from the past: If you have Hong Kong and Macau endorsement information, you can handle the new endorsement by yourself at the endorsement machine, it takes 1 minute. If you have never had any Hong Kong and Macau endorsements (a white card), you must follow the time for handling a new card.
❗️Return: Gongbei Port is called Guanzha in Macau, don't search for the wrong destination when you search.
❗️Shopping, generally you will not be stopped when you return unless you have a lot of things.
【On the Road-Macau Crazy Walk for 9 Hours】
Gongbei Exit-(Take the New Lisboa Fortune Car)-New Lisboa-(Walk)-Legislative Council-(Walk)-Ruins of St. Paul-(Walk)-Fort/Macau Museum-(Walk)-Crazy Church Slope-(Walk)-Dongwangyang New Street-(Walk)-Old Lisboa-(Bus 6 Yuan)-Londoner-(Walk)-Venetian-(Bus/Taxi/Fortune Car)-Old Lisboa-(Bus/Taxi/Fortune Car)-Guanzha
10:00-19:00, 9 hours, the output limit
If it weren't for the Venetian who kept walking and felt there was no end, I should be able to visit more places
【Food & Souvenirs】
Macau is expensive, so I didn't eat anything particularly good, but there are some small shops I recommend to everyone (I've eaten)
1⃣️ Jinmei Food
2⃣️ Jinli Food Shop
3⃣️ Paramount
4⃣️ Xingxiangyuan
Souvenirs, the most common and most chosen is "Juji Souvenir", and I chose to buy "Andrew Egg Tart" for egg tarts.
【Extra Attention】
1, Expenses: Most shops can Alipay & WeChat, real-time exchange rate, cash can be exchanged for 1000 Macau dollars, Hong Kong dollars can also be, but the exchange rate is different.
2, SIM card: You can buy it at customs or in advance, turn on the phone after customs, and you can receive the Macau signal.
3, Macau taxi: Taxi stand queue or hail (but I didn't see anyone hailing, almost all were queuing) or Macau call app, taxi is a bit expensive, traffic is not easy to move, often over a hundred, and only cash is accepted.
4, Bus: All 6 yuan, prepare the money in advance, no change

Must visit the Macau Museum.
The Macao Museum is located on the slope of the Guia Hill Park, where some historical relics with Macao characteristics are gathered. Due to Macao's certain Portuguese-style history, most people can feel the unique exotic style besides the heavy history of Macao.
The Macao Museum is a museum that showcases the history and diverse culture of Macao. The exhibits in the museum showcase the rich and profound historical and cultural connotations of Macao, displaying the historical changes of Macao over hundreds of years, and telling the story of residents from different countries and cultural backgrounds living together peacefully in Macao.
The Macao Museum is located on the historic site of the Fortress of St. Paul's in the center of Macao. It was designed by Portuguese architect Carlos Marreiros and opened on April 18, 1998. From the nationality of this chief designer, it is not difficult to see that Macao is a city that integrates Eastern and Western cultural characteristics.
The Macao Museum has three floors of exhibition halls for visitors to explore, each with its own theme.
The first floor exhibition area is the exhibition of the original civilization of Macau. This layer mainly introduces the origin of Macau, and the prosperity of this important international trading port from the Neolithic period to the mid-17th century. It was the golden period of Macau.
The most prominent exhibit on the first floor is the 1:5 scale model of a ship's cabin. From the early Ming Dynasty to the mid-Ming Dynasty, the imperial court implemented the "Maritime Ban" policy, suspending private foreign trade. Therefore, Macau was an important transit port for Chinese ceramic exports during the Ming Dynasty. As a transportation tool, ships were crucial, and some of their decorations were also worth studying.
This model clearly shows the distribution of goods and hardware facilities in the cargo hold. Tea and silk are placed in the upper-middle deck, porcelain in the lower-middle deck, and some stones in the bottom deck.
Many people are curious why stones are placed at the bottom. Are they also goods traded? In fact, these stones are called "ballast stones". When the cargo is not full, the weight of the ship itself is not enough to overcome the strong winds and waves at sea. In order to cope with the wind and waves, these stones are used to stabilize the cabin, so that the ship can travel smoothly on the sea.
When the cargo is full, the ballast will be thrown on the roadside. Macanese people think these stones are beautiful, so they feel it's a waste to throw them away. Therefore, they decided to break them and use them to repair the road.
It is said that the stone road around the council hall was made by crushing ballast stones. Most of the goods transported were European rarities and favorites such as tea, porcelain, and silk products.
Chinese porcelain not only includes classic blue and white porcelain like our Qinghua Liuting pattern porcelain, but also export porcelain that caters to foreign tastes in order to expand overseas markets.
The most famous one is Clark porcelain, which has patterns of flowers, birds, landscapes, and figures.
These exported porcelain often have classic Christian patterns and designs, which are very popular among Europeans.
The second floor exhibition area of the Macao Museum showcases Macao's folk art and traditional culture. It displays cultural themes that have brought richness and uniqueness to Macao's social and cultural scene, and these themes are derived from Macao's old culture.
For example, there are traditional festivals and daily customs in Macau, as well as traditional handicrafts and typical industries. The most prominent feature on the second floor is the row of buildings that blend Eastern and Western characteristics.
These buildings blend traditional Chinese architectural style, subtropical features, and designs derived from the European Neoclassical movement, resulting in a unique architectural style.
The entire Macau Museum has gained a bit of grandeur. The museums in Macau use advanced technologies such as 3D, light, sound, and images, as well as replicas and models to enhance their displays.
The combination of ancient civilization and modern civilization gives people a feeling of being in a different world. This new technology is particularly widely used in the second floor exhibition area. For example, the old firecracker factory is reduced and replicated, and the old firecracker production process is displayed clearly, with many buttons that, when pressed, produce the sound of firecrackers exploding, making it seem as if you are there.
Third floor exhibition area showcases the contemporary characteristics of Macau, which is the last floor of the museum. It mainly introduces various social conditions and livelihoods of contemporary Macau, while also introducing literary works and artworks with Macau as the theme.
The most impressive thing to me is some of the wedding customs in Macau. The long-term residents of Macau are mainly Chinese, as well as Portuguese natives, Filipinos and other foreigners. In earlier years, regardless of wealth, Chinese grooms in Macau would hold a "shangtou" ceremony on the eve of their wedding.
Foreigners who believe in Catholicism will hold their weddings in churches. However, the characteristic of the entire city of Macau is the mixture of Chinese and Western cultures. Although the location of the wedding is mostly fixed, Macanese weddings also incorporate both Chinese and Western elements, with couples both getting married in a church and performing traditional Chinese wedding ceremonies. Macau brides wear both wedding dresses and traditional Chinese qipaos.
The collision and integration of different races and customs of Chinese, Portuguese and foreign residents have endowed Macau with a more diverse and profound culture.
It is this complex population composition that makes Macau's wedding customs diverse. The biggest feature of the entire Macau Museum is the cultural treasures produced by the collision and integration of Eastern and Western cultures, which not only preserves rich material cultural heritage, but also embodies the enduring spirit of Chinese culture.
The surrounding Ruins of St. Paul's, Fortaleza do Monte, Mandarin's House, Macao Museum and many other famous historical sites form a holy land of cultural heritage, which is an excellent place for learning, entertainment and sightseeing.
