[2025 Singapore Stay] Travel Guide for Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree (Updated Jun)

If you are looking to stay at a towering skyscraper with malls attached to it and tons of facilities as far as the eye can see, then this review is not for you. If however, you are interested to know what is a hotel doing in the middle of the Mandai reserve, an area many Singaporean sons are familiar with during their National Service rite of passage, then read on to discover more of my experience at Banyan Tree Mandai Rainforest Resort. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that Banyan Tree’s ethos and commitment to sustainability is not just a philosophy but a living, breathing part of every detail—from the eco-conscious design of the lodgings to the thoughtful practices that honour the surrounding rainforest. One such thoughtful practice is the dimming of lights in the lobby and surrounding areas when dusk falls so as to minimise light pollution. We are in the middle of a nature reserve after all and the wildlife surrounding us needs to sleep too! At the end of the day, note that we are no longer at Orchard Road with its bright lights and endless traffic. Another thoughtful (though some say debatable) practice is the control of room temperature such that it can at best attain a minimum of 24oC. During my stay, I would say that it was comfortable enough for me to sleep through the entire night. However, I do understand that some guests may have a lower tolerance of heat, especially when faced with Singapore’s tropical climate in the warmer months of June to September. Perhaps the management can consider adjusting the minimum room temperature lower during those ‘summer months’ to allow guests to cope with the warmer temperatures? Personally, I enjoyed having the overhead fan in the room, not so much as to cool the room (although it most certainly could), as I like a constant circulation of air in the room as much as possible. Most hotels that I’ve been to do not have an overhead fan in the room and so, I felt that it was a nice touch to have one at the resort. Another feature that I appreciated was the provision of a water purifier in every room. Singapore’s tap water, while known to be safe and clean to drink directly, may cause uneasiness to some if they had to. The machine not only helps to further purify the water but it also eliminates the need for plastic and glass-bottled water. To me, that’s more power to the environment! As stewards of the environment, if we do not take care of the place we call home, who’s going to do it for us? The dedication to preserving the environment while offering luxury is truly inspiring. There is no need to live like Tarzan & Jane in order to co-exist with nature. One of the highlights of my stay was the serene rooftop infinity pool, where I found myself enveloped between the lush canopy and the open sky. It was a magical space to unwind, offering a sense of tranquility that seamlessly blended indulgence with the raw beauty of the rainforest.

The scenic view rooms are quite beautiful - just slide open the door to hear cheerful birdsongs and enjoy stunning views of the lake and forest, perfect for gorgeous selfies. The service is thoughtful too, with lemon water, juice and cookies prepared in the lobby for waiting guests. The provided hotel map makes exploration super convenient. #springitinerary Great news—Mandai Boardwalk is now open for free! This 3.3 km trail runs along the outskirts of the Singapore Zoo and River Safari, offering fresh air and scenic views the whole way. The path is mostly flat and easy, making it perfect for everyone. Along the walk, you might even spot some small animals! The boardwalk is thoughtfully designed with accessibility in mind, so grandparents and kids can enjoy it with ease. Opening hours: 7 AM to 7 PM The trail is one-way with two entrances: Entrance A, which is closer to the bus stop, and Entrance B, right at the River Safari gate. We parked at Carpark 200, then walked along a small path to Entrance A, starting our hike there and finishing at Entrance B near the River Safari. The route is well-marked with plenty of boardwalk signs, so just follow them and enjoy a relaxed walk filled with plenty of photo ops. The whole hike takes about 45–50 minutes. Along the way, you’ll find shady spots and gentle breezes that keep things comfortable, so you won’t feel too hot. #springitinerary I came to Singapore on the weekend for Lady Gaga’s concert. This time, instead of staying downtown like last time at Orchard Road, I decided to try this newly opened hotel located near the Singapore Zoo. Location: The hotel is really quite remote—definitely more suitable for families with kids planning a weekend getaway. It’s inside the Singapore Zoo area. Getting to the city center by taxi costs around 30 to 40 SGD. If you take public transport, transferring from bus to MRT, it takes about 1.5 hours to reach Marina Bay Sands. Unless you’re here for the zoo, I wouldn’t recommend this location because surrounding amenities are still very limited. Dining options are scarce, though there is a no-queue popular Song Fa Bak Kut Teh nearby. Hotel Environment: Since this is a resort-style hotel, it’s worth mentioning that the lobby and corridors are open-air—not air-conditioned—but it’s not too hot either. The whole area feels like a tropical rainforest, giving the hotel a very unique vibe. Before arriving, I read some online reviews complaining about bugs in the rooms, so I was a bit worried. But after checking in, I didn’t find any issues at all. #SingaporeNature

Among the 338 guest rooms, there are 24 suspended tree houses, which are modeled after the pods of the purple-flowered chicken blood tree, which is very thoughtful. The private terrace faces the rainforest of Seletar Reservoir directly. It feels great to be awakened by the birdsong and morning light coming through the 270° floor-to-ceiling windows every morning. What's more, the toilet flushes with recycled rainwater, ventilation relies on natural design, and even the air conditioner doesn't need to be turned on. The concept of symbiosis with the rainforest is implemented to the end. The interaction with animals is not to be missed. It’s only a 5-minute walk to the Singapore Zoo and River Safari. You can use the VIP channel to enjoy the "Wildlife Breakfast" and Amazon River Cruise. It’s so cool 👍🏻. There are so many exclusive activities, such as feeding hornbills, tracking sugar gliders, and children can also participate in summer camps. Want excitement? Cave exploration, canopy climbing, and waterfall crossing are waiting for your challenge. The parent-child facilities and sustainable play methods are very thoughtful, the rooftop pool is beautiful, the restaurant ingredients are fresh, and the scrub can be DIY. This time I stayed there for a few days and I want to tell you about my real experience. 🌟Stay Experience We deliberately chose to check in during off-peak hours at night, so there was no long queue at the front desk and it went smoothly. But I have to say that the number of hotel employees is really small. After entering the hotel, the internal route is winding and there is no staff to guide. I was a little confused when dragging my luggage to find the room, and my first impression was discounted 😕. 🛏Room conditions The Rainforest Room we booked was small, and the interior decoration was a bit rough and not well thought out. There wasn't even a bathtub, which was not very friendly for those who wanted to relax in a bath. The rooms are densely packed in the corridor. As soon as you walk in, you're overwhelmed by the cramped feeling. It really looks like a staff dormitory. I have to give a bad review for this ❌. 🍱Restaurant reviews Breakfast and dinner are both buffet style, and there is also the option of in-room dining. To be honest, the buffet has very few food choices, mostly Southeast Asian dishes. The taste is just so-so, and you will get sick of it if you eat too much. On the contrary, the In room dining is amazing and tastes much better. I recommend everyone to try this 👍. 🏋️♀️Facility Highlights The hotel gym is huge, fitness enthusiasts are in luck! There are also two swimming pools, especially the rooftop infinity pool, which has an amazing view and is great for taking photos📷. The swimming pool is open from 7 am to 7 pm, so you can enjoy a swim if you plan your time well. The biggest plus point here is that it is ridiculously close to the Night Zoo and can be reached on foot. It is very convenient to take the kids to see the animals, and it is definitely a blessing for parent-child travel. 🌳Surrounding environment The hotel is hidden in the forest, so mosquitoes are inevitable. Be sure to prepare a strong mosquito repellent spray before coming. However, the room we stayed in was quite clean. At least there were no cockroaches or mosquitoes flying around as described online, so we felt reassured. 📝Summary As a newly opened hotel, its service does have a lot of room for improvement. At this stage, it is more suitable for family outings. At a price of over one thousand yuan, the price-performance ratio is acceptable. But if the price goes up in the future, considering the current service and hardware conditions, it won't be worth coming here specifically to stay.
