As soon as I stepped into the museum, I was attracted by the ancient artifacts and exhibits in front of me. I felt the thickness of history and the richness of stories. 🧭🌍📚 I first visited the ancient exhibition area, which displayed artifacts and artworks from the Three Kingdoms period, Unified Silla, Goryeo Dynasty, and Joseon Dynasty. I saw exquisite ceramics and calligraphy works that demonstrated the wisdom and artistic talent of ancient Koreans. I also learned about the political system and social life of ancient dynasties. These exhibits gave me a deeper understanding of Korea's ancient history. 🏺🖌️🏰 Then we entered the modern exhibition area. The modern history of Korea and the development of modern Korea are displayed here. The museum features four permanent exhibition halls which cover the period from the late 19th century to the present, with the themes of "Prelude to the Republic of Korea", "Foundation of the Republic of Korea", "Development of the Republic of Korea", and "Modernization and Korea's Vision of Future". It is an interesting glimpse into how the Korean war in particular and how political decisions and national determination helped South Korea put itself on the world stage through mass production, innovation and culture. The museum has free entry and has seasonal exhibitions along side it’s permanent fixtures, currently they are celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the special friendship between South Korea and the United States of America. When you enter the exhibition hall, the first thing that catches your eye is the precious cultural relics from the Joseon Dynasty. The exquisite porcelain and calligraphy works make you admire the wisdom and artistic attainments of the ancients. I spent most of the day visiting each exhibition area in detail. From the historical trajectory of the Three Kingdoms period to the social changes in modern Korea, the complete story line made me feel as if I was traveling through thousands of years with the flow of time. In the afternoon, I took a short break in the museum’s cafe and read the historical introduction provided by the museum. I felt that the cultural depth of the entire city became more vivid because of this journey. When I arrived at Gyeongbokgung Palace, it started to rain. To take shelter from the rain, I found myself at the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History (대한민국역사박물관). This museum is easily accessible from the popular tourist area of Anguk and is located right in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gwanghwamun Square. It is situated next to the U.S. Embassy. The 8-story museum, which opened in 2012, is Korea's first national museum dedicated to modern history. It covers the history of South Korea from the 19th century to the present, excluding the Joseon Dynasty. You can learn in-depth about the Japanese colonial period and the democratization movement, and see artifacts from those times, allowing you to witness history firsthand. The exhibits are divided into four sections, and on the 5th floor, there are displays featuring BTS and Korean dramas. It was quite moving to see contemporary items displayed among historical artifacts. The exhibits are mainly in Korean and English, but you can borrow a Japanese audio guide at the reception by showing your passport. The museum is well-equipped with facilities such as a nursing room, medical room, and luggage storage on the first floor, making it accessible for travelers of all ages. The rooftop garden on the 8th floor is open until 9 PM on Wednesdays and Saturdays, offering a great spot to enjoy the night view of Gwanghwamun. Gyeongbokgung Palace is a place where you can feel the history of Korea. In the square, we were able to watch the ceremony of those who protect the palace. Many rare musical instruments were used in the ceremony, and the atmosphere was solemn and very worth seeing. The palace was also spacious and luxurious, reminiscent of the Forbidden Palace in Beijing. The Blue House was once used as the official residence, and is open to the public free of charge. You can see the presidential office and other facilities.
