Rinnoji Temple is an important temple in Nikko and the founder of Nikko Mountain. Its founder, Master Shengdao, was a Buddhist monk who introduced Buddhism to Nikko in the 8th century. The main hall of the monastery, "Three Buddha Hall", houses a large wooden gilded Amitabha seated statue, a thousand-handed Avalokitesvara statue and a horse-headed Avalokitesvara statue. The three Buddha statues are regarded as the Nikko Sanzan deities in Buddhist form, and the Nikko Sanzan deities are enshrined in Futarayama Shrine. Opposite the Three Buddha Hall is the temple's Treasure Hall, which houses exhibits related to Buddhism and the Tokugawa family. Next to the Treasure Hall is a small Japanese-style garden, Happy Garden.
