Today, I finally checked in at the most beautiful national defense highway, S101. I set off from Urumqi at 10 a.m., heading towards the snow-capped mountains🏔, passing by the neighborhood, grasslands, and Danxia formations～ It was more beautiful than expected! 📌Location points: 1. Qigu Bridge - Highly recommended, completely beyond expectations! There is a small hill on the way to Qigu Bridge that you can climb up, and taking photos from the very top is absolutely amazing. (Around 12:30 p.m., after spending half an hour in the neighborhood) 2. Baili Danxia Viewing Platform: An officially designated spot, but actually, the Danxia landscape is all along the road. Personally, I don't think it's as beautiful as Qigu Bridge, but it offers a different scenery. (Around 1:40 p.m.) 3. Kenswart Reservoir: Currently not open, blocked off with green isolation tape, unable to enter the scenic area. The view without a drone is quite ordinary. In the 1960s, in preparation for war and famine, the S101 National Defense Highway was built during the war with a special mission. In peacetime, it was gradually abandoned due to poor road conditions and complex terrain. With the emphasis on tourism in recent years, various counties and cities have begun to rebuild S101, giving this heroic road new life. This hidden niche secret highway has also come into the public eye and is on the road trip enthusiasts' to-do list. Starting from Urumqi, the must-visit places mentioned on the Internet are, in order: 1. The geographical center of Asia; 2. Baili Danxia Mentou, starting from 0 kilometers; 3. There was a traffic light at the intersection and a China Aviation Oil gas station at the intersection. We filled up the gas here and also filled up the water tank in the restroom of the gas station. Not far after the traffic light, we saw a Danxia landform in front of us. The bright red mountain was eroded into layers of shapes that looked like ghost faces. Going further, you can see the gate of Baili Danxia, ​​the starting point of 0 kilometers. Many people stop here to take pictures. This entry marks the beginning of the S101 Baili Danxia section. The first viewing point is Camel Peak. At the front end of Camel Peak is a strange rock in the shape of a camel's head, followed by a row of winding hump-shaped rocks, hence the name Camel Peak. You can park your car in the parking lot of the roadside observation deck and walk up to the observation deck, but you can only see part of it. Only by raising a drone can you witness its true appearance. Coming out of the Camel Peak Observation Deck, we were dazzled by the various styles of Danxia landforms along the way. I met a shepherd herding sheep in a valley. These were long-haired goats. The shepherd said that this sheep could be sold for 1,000 to 2,000 yuan. He had more than 400 sheep at home. After some calculation, this could be sold for hundreds of thousands. Is this considered rich? At a parking spot, we met a local guy who suggested that we go out from Hutubi. That section of the road is very beautiful and we can go to the town to eat. He works in the town and commutes this road every day. However, considering the time constraints, we drove straight ahead and did not see any trace of Chibi Tianhu Lake along the way. Drive until you are almost at the Shimenzi Reservoir. There is a fork in the road on the right, which is blocked by a pole and you cannot enter. Go further and you will see an observation deck where you can see a little. Then cross a bridge and you can see the Shimen Reservoir from the bridge. The turquoise water, like Kanas Lake, is the unique blue of Xinjiang. You cannot park on the bridge, but this is the best viewing point. After crossing the bridge, there is a road on the right where you can drive to an open space. However, there is a fence around it, so you cannot see the entire reservoir. I guess you can go in and view the reservoir from the blocked intersection ahead. After walking more than ten kilometers forward, the viewing platform on the left is full of cars. You can see a blue reservoir in the valley on the left that is more spectacular than the Shimen Reservoir. This is the Kenswat Reservoir. It is a pity that you can only see a corner of it from the viewing platform. You must fly a drone here to capture the beautiful scenery. Not far after passing the Kenswat Reservoir, we finished the Baili Danxia section, and began to see various grassland scenery, including the lifelike human grassland. In the evening, we arrived at the Lujiaowan parking lot, which is also a good parking spot recommended by car friends. When we got here, the attraction was closed and the entrance to the parking lot was closed. We saw that it was full of various RVs and trucks. We walked along the parking lot wall and finally found an entrance, but we couldn't get to the other side of the parking lot. The enthusiastic administrator asked us to remove the roadblocks so we could drive into the parking lot. At this point, S101 is almost finished. Generally speaking, this is a road with a great self-driving experience, but some scenic spots are not clearly marked and are not well developed, so you need to slowly explore them yourself. However, once the development is complete, various charges will probably be introduced, so if you want to experience the more primitive landscape, it is recommended to come as soon as possible.
