Xi'an Transportation
Xi’an, the historic capital of Shaanxi Province, is a major transportation hub in central China, accessible by air, rail, bus, or road from international and domestic locations. By Air Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY): The primary gateway, located ~ 40 km (25 miles) northwest of downtown. Serves international and domestic routes. To City Center from XIY: Airport shuttles (~60 minutes, ~¥30) connect to downtown hotels and Xi’an Railway Station. Metro Lines 14 and 17 (40–50 minutes) link to key stations like Beikezhan (North Railway Station). Taxis cost ~¥130–180, depending on traffic. By Train Xi’an North Railway Station and Xi'an East Station: The main hubs for high-speed trains (G-series), connecting to Beijing (4–5 hours), Shanghai (6–7 hours), Chengdu (3–4 hours), Chongqing (5–6 hours), and many other locations. Xi’an Railway Station: Handles slower trains, centrally located near the city walls. All stations are linked to Xi’an’s metro system. By Bus Xi’an Bus Terminal and Fengqing Road Station connect to regional destinations, such as Huashan (2 hours) or Yan’an (5–6 hours). By Road Driving or private transport is possible via expressways like the G5 (to Chengdu) or G30 (to Lanzhou). Road travel is less recommended for international visitors due to complex driving regulations and language barriers.

Xi'an Best Time to Visit
Autumn (September–early November) and Spring (April-May) offer mild weather, clear skies, and comfortable conditions, ideal for exploring Xi’an’s historic sites like the Terracotta Warriors and the City Wall. Spring: Temperatures range from 8–20°C (46–68°F), with occasional rain and dust storms. Plum blossoms bloom at Qinglong Temple (March–April). Summer: Hot and humid, 22–32°C (72–90°F), with frequent rain. Fall: Cool and pleasant, 10–25°C (50–77°F), with clear skies. Perfect for cycling the City Wall or visiting Mount Huashan. Winter: Cold and dry, -2–8°C (28–46°F), with occasional light snow. Fewer crowds make it budget-friendly. The Spring Festival (January/February, lunar calendar) brings lanterns and temple celebrations to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.

Xi'an Moments: Through Travelers' Eyes
I have seen many dense-eave pagodas, but the Small Wild Goose Pagoda is still the most beautiful. ◎ During the Jinglong era of Emperor Zhongzong of the Tang Dynasty (707–710), the Jianfu Temple Pagoda was built under the guidance of Master Dao'an, with funds raised by palace attendants, to house the Buddhist scriptures, images, and relics brought back from ancient India by the monk Yijing. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, military degree holders followed the custom of "inscribing names on the Wild Goose Pagoda" by carving their names into the Jianfu Temple Pagoda. By the Jiajing era (1522–1566), the name "Small Wild Goose Pagoda" began to appear in local gazetteers and scholars' notes. In the Qing Dynasty, Zhu Jiyi's "Stele of the Eight Views of Guanzhong" directly used the term "Morning Bell of the Wild Goose Pagoda" to refer to the bell of the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, cementing the name "Small Wild Goose Pagoda" in the public consciousness. ◎○ The Small Wild Goose Pagoda was originally about 46 meters tall with 15 stories. The top 2 stories were destroyed in the Great Jiajing Earthquake, leaving 13 stories today with a remaining height of about 43.4 meters. Each story of the Small Wild Goose Pagoda has arched doors facing north and south. Because of this, the pagoda has cracked 3 times due to earthquakes. However, because its foundation is made of hemispherical rammed earth—like a roly-poly toy—it has been able to compress and seal itself back together after each crack due to minor tremors or gravity, which is quite miraculous. Unlike the pavilion-style Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda is a typical dense-eave brick pagoda. The pagoda body tapers inward with each story, creating a natural, gentle, shuttle-shaped silhouette that is slender, upright, and elegant, full of Tang Dynasty charm. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was renovated with a full brick casing, so what you see on the outside today is from the Ming Dynasty. Although the Small Wild Goose Pagoda has also undergone renovations, except for the brick casing on the bottom story, the parts above are original Tang Dynasty construction, preserving an authentic Tang style. I love looking at pagodas, especially Tang Dynasty ones. Among Tang pagodas, I love the dense-eave style the most, and the Small Wild Goose Pagoda is the best of them all. In my heart, it is the most beautiful, bar none. ◎◎○ When I visited the Small Wild Goose Pagoda 10 years ago, you could still buy a ticket to climb it. I didn't go up, and now that I'm back, you can no longer climb it, which is a great pity. I wonder how many friends traveling to Xi'an make a special trip to see the Small Wild Goose Pagoda. Because of the Grand Tang Ever Bright City, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda is crowded with tourists every day, while the area around the Small Wild Goose Pagoda used to be a bit shabby, so it was much less crowded. The area nearby is currently buzzing with the construction of Taikoo Li, which is said to open next year. By then, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda should also become a must-visit spot in Xi'an.
