Recommended five-day self-driving tour from Xi'an to Gannan!
👍Most recommended:
There are many travel routes from Xi'an to Gannan, and here is a popular five-day tour itinerary:
🗓Itinerary:
Day 1: Xi'an—Sangke Grassland. The whole journey is about 790 kilometers.
Depart from Xi'an, take the Lianhuo Expressway westward, with almost no traffic after Baoji, exit the expressway at Wushan County, and then drive for an hour and a half to reach Langdaban Grassland. Watch the sunrise here, camp and rest.
Depart at noon to reach Min County for lunch, then continue west along National Highway 316, passing through the terraced fields of thousands of acres, the viewing platform of Zhuoni County, and arrive at Hezuo City. The Duohe'er Temple and Zhayou Temple along the way can be visited for free.
If you don't want to camp, you can stay in the city. For camping, navigate to Zhayou Township, follow the road to the mountain pass, which is part of the Sangke Grassland, sparsely populated, and an excellent spot for camping and stargazing.
Day 2: Sangke—Langmu Temple. The whole journey is about 160 kilometers.
Wake up naturally in the morning on the grassland, have breakfast, and then enter the Sangke Grassland. Even on the boundless grassland road, the beauty of Guomang Wetland and the tenderness of Gahai Lake touch people's hearts. Arrive at Langmu Temple in the afternoon, the only place in the town that may get congested, where you can gather in the town or visit the temples.
Langmu Temple has two temples, belonging to Ruoergai County in Sichuan and Luqu County in Gansu. If you want to see rippling blue waves, you can go to the Namo Grand Canyon in Sichuan's Langmu Temple, which is the source of the Bailong River. The clear stream flows past the caves on the cliff edge, where you can throw stones for good luck, and of course, feeding pigeons is also a good choice.
Day 3: Langmu Temple—Zhagana. The whole journey is about 330 kilometers.
Leave Langmu Temple and take the U13 county road into Ruoergai. This is a city of grasslands, where you will pass the winding Heihe Ranch, see cattle and sheep running freely, galloping horses, and also pass the Yellow River's Great Bend, where you can listen to the low cry of the mother river.
Drive north from Tangke on National Highway 248, and you can reach Zhagana Village by evening, where you can choose to stay in the village or camp at the viewing platform.
Day 4 Zhagana—Lintan County. The total length is about 140 kilometers.
Catch the sunrise over Zhagana in the early morning, and start the essence of this journey, the Loke Crossing—Zhagana to Zagulu Town, 100 kilometers of unpaved road, 40 kilometers of bomb craters, which will shake you to doubt life, but it does not affect your anticipation of the beautiful scenery.
In the middle of the crossing, a new hiking trail has been built, where you can walk a short distance and stand high to overlook the entire valley. If you can only go to one place in Gannan by self-driving, then the Loke Road is the best answer. When the car reaches Zagulu Town, you finally escape the bumpy road section and stay in Lintan County in the evening.
Day 5 Lintan—Xi'an. Return to Xi'an via the expressway. If you have more time, you can also detour to Liuba to experience the passion of red leaves.
Gannan has rich scenery and many options, you can adjust according to your time.
Departing from Xi'an on May Day, embark on a unique and pure journey to Gannan!!
In this land with an average altitude of 2900 meters, you can encounter grasslands, lakes, snow-capped mountains, seas of flowers, wetlands, forests, rivers, temples, blue skies and white clouds, fluttering prayer flags, and Tibetan charm. All your beautiful imaginations can be met in Gannan.

Hurry up and plan for the National Day💖
The Sangke Grassland on the plateau is stunningly beautiful
After returning from Labrang Monastery to Xiahe County, I passed through the main street and remembered there was a 'Labrang Westland Grand Hotel'—I passed it on the way here, a five-story building with glass walls, looking quite fashionable. In fact, the county is not very large, with a population of less than 90,000.
Once out of the county, the car headed west directly to Sangke Grassland, just in time to digest after a meal! This was a planned trip.
The Sangke Grassland is only about a dozen kilometers away from Xiahe County. Although I was dozing off, I couldn't bear to miss the beautiful scenery outside the car window. What does 'embracing nature' mean? It starts with your eyes first!
Outside the car window is the vast grassland, with the road extending into the distance through the middle of the large meadow.
Looking around, the green grass is tinged with yellow, the season of harvest, and also the season for tourists to view the autumn. Some areas are already covered in yellow, the sections of the low slopes where the sunlight is best. The grassland is not flat; the terrain is undulating, mostly gentle slopes, so there is a sense of layering, or rather, a 'curvy' beauty.
In the distance are rolling hills, with more mountains behind them, looking very far away, like on the horizon, connected with large clouds, giving an endless visual experience.
In the grassland, dots of cattle and sheep are scattered—black dots, white dots, what a great pasture! No wonder people in Gansu like to eat beef noodles; the free-range environment here is good, the cattle must be in a good mood, and certainly robust!
In no time, we arrived at a scenic spot in the vast Sangke Grassland, which covers an area of about 70 square kilometers and is said to have several attractions, including a wetland park.
The scenic spot we passed through is actually the 'Tashi Grassland Happy Camp'.
I hurried off the bus for a stroll. I like this environment, looking into the distance, seeing green, breathing the air with the most natural 'flavor', finding the space with the most sense of freedom.
We also enjoyed free treatment. Actually, for the camp, it is more suitable for young people to 'check in'.
Here, there are tents set up, wooden pavilions for resting and strolling, and an arched passageway—a tunnel shape, with colorful prayer flags and white hadas hanging all over the metal frame, which can be seen when passing by on the road, very beautiful and dazzling. Especially when the wind is strong that day, the prayer flag fabric is light and thin, all blown in one direction by the wind, neat and uniform.
Walking through the arched corridor of prayer flags, I wrapped my head well, the colorful prayer flags around me rustled in the wind, and I couldn't miss the bright colors of the 'time-space tunnel' here, took photos, very beautiful—'Prayer Flag Tunnel'!
The prayer flags in blue, white, red, green, and yellow are printed with Buddha's teachings and images, which is the most typical style of the Tibetan area, not for beautifying the environment, but for praying for blessings and disaster relief.
Nearby stands a large stone monument over 4 meters high, with the front inscribed 'Sangke Grassland Altitude Three Thousand Meters', and the back: Sangke Grassland is 13 kilometers west of Xiahe County, Gannan State, part of the Dajutan Grassland in Sangke Township, surrounded by mountains, with a wide and flat highland grassland in the middle, famous in the northwest Tibetan area for its excellent pastures and for historically holding grand Tibetan Buddhist religious activities.
We strolled in the grass, the dense little grasses not growing tall, but forming an endless green carpet, a vibrant scene that satisfied me. The vastness of the earth, the beauty of the plateau grassland, attracts more and more tourists to come for sightseeing.
The main entertainment games set up here include: horse riding and archery. Especially horse riding, young people will basically go to experience it. The horse riding is not about letting the horses run on the grassland; I saw that there is always a horseman leading the horse slowly, with safety as the priority.
The private pastures on the hills near the grassland have lush grass and dense colorful wildflowers in summer, quite beautiful.
The driver told us that during the summer holidays, there are especially many people coming, and then you can join the crowd to dance the Guozhuang dance; on festival days, it's even more lively!
I was thinking, if I lay flat on the grass at night, how many stars there must be in the night sky!
The wind was strong that afternoon, the sky cloudy, the clouds thick, and even raindrops drifted by. We didn't stay long and continued on towards Hezuo!
The Sangke Grassland is adorned with only two colors, azure and emerald green
The Sangke Grassland is located in Xiahe County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, and is the legendary place where King Gesar paid homage to the spirits. The clear blue sky and the grassland blooming with flowers are enchanting.
The Sangke Grassland serves as a natural pasture for the Tibetan people of Gannan, with lush water and grass. In summer, the grasslands are as green as a carpet, with herds of cattle and sheep under the blue sky and white clouds, presenting a natural pastoral scene.
Visitors mainly engage in Tibetan home-stay activities when entering the grassland, such as eating yogurt, hand-grabbed mutton, and tsampa in Tibetan tents, participating in bonfire parties, and dancing the Guozhuang.
The horse racing festival here is very famous. On the thirteenth day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, the seven tribes of Sangke gather here for the horse racing festival. At that time, herdsmen from all over gather, and the tents are as numerous as clouds, creating a lively atmosphere.
In the Sangke Grassland, wait for a breeze
The most beautiful scenery is not at the destination
But on the way...
The wind will blow across the grassland, across the streams, and over the blooming Gesang flowers;
Roam freely on the Sangke Grassland...
Listen to the wind's song, and watch the flowers bloom

Sangke Prairie (Part 2)
Since 1987, unique Tibetan tourism projects have been launched here, and cabins for tourists to stay in have been built. They provide tourists with Tibetan meals such as butter tea, tsampa, Tibetan bread, and hand-grabbed mutton. Tourists can also dress in Tibetan costumes, ride on fine horses or yaks, stroll around the prairie, and fully appreciate the folk customs of Tibetan herders.
【Gannan】I learned to ride a horse on the grassland|Sangke Grassland
|Sangke Grassland. I have longed for freedom all my life and from beginning to end
Whenever someone asks me about the specifics of freedom
I don't know where to start
Until I came here
-
I galloped on a horse on the Sangke Grassland
Of course, this is just nonsense
Because I have been timid since I was a child due to a lack of security
I can only let the Tibetans lead the horse slowly
The scenery along the way is as beautiful as a painting
It's that kind of healing artwork
-
Don't worry about trivial matters
Forget the noisy car sounds in the city
I just want to quietly watch the white clouds drifting
Still let the horse slowly stroll
-
I think
At this moment, I am free

Sanko Prairie - encountered the windows desktop wallpaper
Sanke Grassland is located in the Sanke Township of Xiahe County, 10 kilometers away from the county, is part of the Dajitan grassland of Sanke Township, the grassland average elevation of 3,000 meters, the grassland area of 70 Square kilometers, the entire grassland is flat, and it is the main animal husbandry base in Gannan Prefecture. When our car was walking through the Sanko Prairie, the scenery outside the window was the same as the screensaver that Windows turned on.
