Sukhothai - Marvellous hidden destination
#sukhothai #thailand #buddhism #temple #
Sukhothai is home to the first Siamese/Thai civilisation and a trip to the old town makes it a wonderful opportunity for natural sightseeing and cultural experience, in an often ignored destination.
Getting There:
Best and cheapest way to visit Sukhothai is via rapid train from Bangkok to Phitsanulok which takes 4 hours and cost less than 500 bath. From there you simply need to go to the bus station with daily buses to Sukhothai Old Town for 60bath and 1.5hr.
Highlight:
The main attraction in Sukhothai old town is the Historical Park, a large ruin complex of the first Siamese civilisation. The park is nicely shaded and the Buddhist and Brahmanist ruins beautifully maintained. It’s possible to rent a bicycle just outside the gate to visit the park.
Hotel:
I highly recommend staying at Sukhothai Garden Hotel, located right in the middle of the town. Rooms go for ~1,000 bath, and the old couple managing the hotel is very friendly and helpful. Very clean rooms and breakfast is great! Choose an upper floor room for a nice view of mountain at sunset.
Food:
Sukhothai noodles are a famous dish in Thailand which is possible to find in several franchise outlets in the country. Here however restaurants offer the original version which is very delicious. Visit Jay Hae Sukhothai Noodle to try them
Suggestions:
-Best tour guide for historical park and Sukhothai culture: Buu Tananya. (IG: buutananya). She speaks perfect English and can suggest best places to appreciate the culture. Highly worth it
-Almsgiving in Wat Traphang Tong bridge. Very unique atmosphere the offering of food to monks there. Anyone can join in the ritual.

Sukhothai UNESCO World Heritage Site
Much further south than all the places mentioned above but technically in the northern part of Thailand, Sukhothai could make a good stop on the way up or down from Chiang Mai. Sukhothai Historical Park is one of the best and largest historic sites in the whole of Thailand and if you’re serious about your exploration, absolutely not to be missed. Sukhothai deserves a day or two of your time, sunrises and sunsets are particularly spectacular.

Sukhothai Gold Pool Temple
To the east of the ancient city of Sukhothai, there is a Gold Pool Temple (Wat Tra Phang Thong) located in the middle of a large lotus pond. There is a small bridge on the pond leading to the temple, which is the birthplace of the Thai Water Lantern Festival and also supplies water to Sukhothai City. Inside the temple, there is a relic of a Sri Lankan-style red clay stupa, and a scripture hall, which contains a rubbing of the Buddha's footprint created by the Thai king in 1390. There are quite a few coins on the Buddha's footprint. Some can even stand up, probably symbolizing good luck.

Learn about Thailand's Sukhothai Historical Park and Thailand's first dynasty here.
📍Sukhothai Historical Park, the first kingdom of Thailand.
More than 700 years ago, this was once the ancient capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom. In the early 13th century, Sukhothai broke away from the rule of the Khmer Empire and established the first Thai dynasty, witnessing the birth of the Thai language. The devout king established countless Buddha statues and temples. On the scattered and dilapidated pedestals and Buddha statues, I saw the former glory of this dynasty. Cultural relics are a silent history.

Travel guide from Chiang Mai to Sukhothai
Chiang Mai has many temples, but my favorite is still the Wat Phra Singh. Leaving Chiang Mai, I took the 12:50 bus to Sukhothai to see the historical sites. The journey takes 5 hours and the ticket costs 324 Thai baht. I will stay in Sukhothai tonight and then go to Phitsanulok. After driving for an hour and a half, the bus suddenly stopped in the Ge Ka district of Nan Province, and we changed to another bus because the first one broke down. Now I am on the second bus with a group of white girls. We arrived in the Sukhothai Historical Park at night, which is very close to the Sukhothai Old City.

Sukhothai Historical Park, a hidden gem not to be missed in Thailand travel.
Having seen the magnificent Grand Palace in Bangkok, coming to Sukhothai is to experience simplicity and vicissitudes. Looking back at the old photos today, I really want to go and see it again.
Located between Chiang Mai and Bangkok, Sukhothai means "dawn of happiness" in Thai and was the capital of the first independent kingdom established by the Thai people in the 13th century. The Sukhothai dynasty lasted for 200 years and witnessed the most brilliant cultural achievements in history.
Sukhothai Historical Park is a world cultural heritage site, including 25 historical sites inside the ancient city of Sukhothai and 70 outside, mostly temples and palaces. The park is very large, rent a bicycle 🚲, ride around, the emerald green lawn, red brick pagodas, and occasionally meet children who come to visit, their yellow school uniforms add a touch of brightness here. There are very few tourists here, very quiet, really can make you calm down and forget everything!
🌼Wat Mahathat Temple
Sukhothai's largest temple, with towering Buddha statues, pagodas, and stone pillars densely distributed and relatively well-preserved.
🌼Wat Si Chum
A narrow slit opens up on the front of the Buddha hall, wider at the bottom than at the top, revealing the seated Buddha enshrined inside from afar.
✅Small tips:
🚲Rent a bicycle for sightseeing.
🌞You can take a ✈️ to Sukhothai, where the airport has its own unique charm, like a big park with many cute animals.

Old city Sukhothai Loy Krathong.
As one of the most enchanting of all Thai festivals, Loy Krathong can be a joy to experience wherever you are in Thailand. But there are some locations, such as Sukhothai and Chiang Mai, where the ‘Festival of Lights’ is extra special.
According to Thai folklore, the Loy Krathong Festival originated in Sukhothai. Established in 1238, the ancient kingdom of Sukhothai was a thriving, prosperous region. Local legend says that at some time in the 14th century a noble lady called Nang Noppamas, a consort of the King of Sukhothai, made the first decorated krathong as a gift for the king. The daughter of a Brahmin priest, Noppamas adapted an existing Brahmin tradition by delicately moulding banana leaves into the shape of a lotus flower before adding a candle and incense sticks. The story goes on to say that the king lit the candle and the incense sticks and floated the krathong on one of the waterways that surrounded the city of Sukhothai.
It’s a romantic story, but whether it’s true or not is unclear. Some historians say that Noppamas was a fictional character who first appeared in a book written in the 18th century. Whatever the true origins of Loy Krathong are, the event is regarded by Thai people as the most romantic of Thailand’s many festivals. And Noppamas is still remembered in the modern-day celebrations with Loy Krathong beauty queen contests held in locations around Thailand to find a local lady worthy of the title ‘Nang Noppamas’.
Loy Krathong
The word ‘loy’ (also written as ‘loi‘) means to float and a ‘krathong’ is a small raft or basket. Traditionally, the person floating the krathong will often take a strand of their hair or fingernail which will then be added to the krathong together with some coins. The candle and incense are then lit and a wish is made before the krathong is placed on the nearest stretch of water. It is believed that the krathong carries away bad luck and signals a fresh start. Coming at the end of the rainy season, Loy Krathong also pays homage to the water goddess, Mae Kongkha (Mother of Waters) and the krathongs are offerings to her.
CHOOSE YOUR KRATHONG
Some of the most beautiful krathongs are made from all natural materials such as banana leaves, the bark of a tree and flowers just as they would have been made when the tradition first started. Modern-day Loy Krathong sees a mix of krathongs being made including some which use the dreaded styrofoam. In Sukhothai, the waterways are enclosed and any krathongs which aren’t bio-degradable can be fished out and disposed of without causing any significant damage to the water and wildlife. Sadly, that isn’t the case in other areas of Thailand although trends are changing for the better as people become more environmentally aware. In recent years there has been an encouraging move towards using traditional, natural krathongs and fish-friendly bread krathongs in the shape of turtles have also proved popular.

The Sukhothai Historical Park ruins are one of Thailand’s most impressive World Heritage sites. The park includes the remains of 21 historical sites and four large ponds within the old walls, with an additional 70 sites within a 5km radius. The ruins are divided into five zones; the central, northern and western zones each have a separate 100B admission fee. Note that motorbikes and cars are no longer allowed inside the park.

Cycling Sukhothai Historical Park (2 days)
Sukhothai dynasty rose from 1238, and fell to 1420. The ancient city of
Sukhothai is rectangular, surrounded by 3 layers of earthen walls, moats and city walls. There are four large pools in the city. There are 193 Buddhist monuments inside and outside the city, including a royal palace, 35 Buddhist temples and a large number of ancient towers, Buddha statues, stone monuments, ponds, dykes and ancient porcelain kiln.
Now the historical park is divided into the southeast and northwest no-large area. The ticket for each district is 100 pigs for 350 pigs. Xichun Temple needs to buy tickets separately, but with the ticket of Xichun Temple, I smoothly entered the northern district.
Riding in the historical park is a very pleasant thing, if you just walk, you can't walk.

The most famous of these is the Ruins Park and the City of Bananas, which have the important pearl bananas of Thailand, a small banana with a delicious size of about 10 cm. Bananas mature in September-October each year. It is a good idea to spend a day or two visiting the historical sites here. Feel the charm of this tourist-scarred northern town.

Thailands Sukhothai and its neighboring historical and cultural city sites are located 300 kilometers north of Bangkok and are one of the most striking architectural sites in the world. It was the capital of the country in the 13th and 15th centuries, and its entire history is the beginning of Thai history. In 1238, two Thai generals, Kunbang Steel Pottery and Khunpaman, succeeded in independence and established the Sukhothai Dynasty. Kunbang Steel Potter was established as King Sri Intrati's and became the first Thai King. Although several Thai dynasties were established in the same period, Sukhothai was still regarded as the first dynasty in Thailand and had an important influence on Thai culture. It witnessed the spread of Thai people to the Chao Phraya River Basin and the development of Buddhism as an important national religion. Today, many Thai paintings, sculptures and buildings still have the shadow of the former Sukhothai. There are many relics of Sukhothai, and there are many temples, pagodas and palaces in the relic park. The building is quite grand and its design is often breathtaking. Since the Thai people believe in Buddhism, the statue of the Buddha can be seen everywhere in the park. Some are ruined, but they are not solemn. Due to the wide range of parks, if you want to carry out detailed excursions, the most labor-saving way is to rent a bicycle at the entrance of the old city and explore the secrets one by one. In addition to the Sukhothai Heritage Park, there are also many temples built during the Sukhothai dynasty. Among them, the Seventh Pagoda Temple and the Xianglong Temple are more distinctive.

The entire old city of Sukhothai is basically surrounded by the Sukhothai Historical Park. This world-class cultural heritage means the meaning of Sukhothai, like the Forbidden City in Beijing and the Grand Palace in Bangkok. It was once the city. Core and glory. But compared with the Forbidden City and the Grand Palace, it is not like a world cultural heritage, but more like an ordinary ordinary people's park. There are no tour groups, no visitors, and the plants and buildings of the park are written with the glory of the city. Whether you are interested in photography, Buddhism or love architecture, everyone is shocked by the sculptures that have been baptized by the years in the air of the frangipani fragrance.

Walking into the Sukhothai Historical Park, it has entered the history of hundreds of years in Thailand.
Here, is the cradle of the birth of Thailand, the country of this smile, the witness from ancient times to the present; the creator of the great miracle that still rises under the rule of the Khmer Empire. History may not be able to objectively tell the story of the past 100 years, but the products that people have processed for their own positions. What's more, the true color that has already been crushed is no longer.
The most shining star in the ancient city of Sukhothai is the Mahathat Temple in the most central part of the city. It is known as the most shining pearl of Sukhothai. It is the most magnificent and spectacular building among the hundreds of ruins in the ancient city.
The entire Mahathat Temple consists of hundreds of stupa of 12 different Buddhist temples. It also has a huge sitting Buddha and a delicate lotus pond. The style of the whole building is typical of the Sukhothai period, and influenced by Hinduism and Khmer Buddhism, it absorbs the artistic characteristics of various religious buildings and forms a distinctive Sukhothai style.
It is said that it was built by the first emperor of Thailand. The great King of Langan Apricot, before his ascension, also performed his ritual here. According to legend, the objects of the Buddha are also treasured here. It was once the most magnificent and highest-ranking temple at that time.
