It's famous for having the world's largest acidic volcanic lake (with a pH of only 0.5) and one of only two blue volcanoes in the world (the other is in Iceland). Mount Ijen presents a significant challenge from the start, with a 45-degree slope along the way. The climb is challenging without adequate rest. Witnessing the blue flames at Ijen in Indonesia, possibly the world's largest, is an unforgettable experience and a must-see. The turquoise crater lake is a stunning display of natural beauty. Then, watch the sun rise over the crater rim. Why are these flames blue? This phenomenon is caused by the combustion of sulfur gases that evaporate under high atmospheric pressure and temperatures (approximately 600°C) from fissures in the volcano. When these gases come into contact with oxygen in the air, they ignite and create beautiful blue flames. Visible only in the dark, this natural phenomenon is extremely rare, occurring only in a few places on Earth. We started our hike at 2 a.m. After a 1.5 to 2 hour night hike using headlamps, we arrived at the crater. To see the blue flames, you must descend into the crater (steep slopes, slippery ground, narrow passages) wearing a gas mask, as the sulfur fumes are concentrated and toxic. Once below, the phenomenon is truly extraordinary: blue flames dance among the white smoke, creating an ethereal and surreal atmosphere. Sunrise and Acid Lake: Around 5 a.m., the sun begins to rise and gradually reveals the crater's deep turquoise lake, offering stunning views of the surrounding volcano. The visual and sensory rewards are well worth the effort. This trip, buy a tour with a join trip, which means we go alone, join with others. The room, pay extra to sleep alone, comfortable and not disturb others. Trip plan Day 1 Start from Chaiyaphum at 10 pm, arrive in Bangkok at 4 am, travel to Don Mueang to catch a free bus to Suvarnabhumi at 5 am. At this point You must have a boarding pass, show it from your email, it arrives very quickly because you take the expressway and in the morning there is no traffic jam. Day 2 Arrive at Suvarnabhumi at around 6 am, check in immediately. Airline Fly scoot, which when booked did not have a direct flight, had to transfer flights. We So chose to land at Singapore and chose to stop for 19 hours to go out and travel, but then changed our minds because we had been there 4 times already. Change to a free tour with the airport instead, which takes about 3 hours, and return to Jewel Changi instead, walk around the various terminals instead, and find a place to sleep at the airport. Day 3 Fly to Indonesia at 8 am, arrive in Surabaya, meet fellow travelers, have lunch and travel to Madakaripura Waterfall, which must take a motorcycle taxi to the waterfall path. Travel from Bromo to Ijen 3 hours, arrive at the accommodation, find things eat, sleep around 9 pm, wake up at 11:30 pm to travel to Ijen Day 5 Depart at 11:30 pm, travel time to the walking point 2-3 hours, start walking at 2:30 am, arrive at the top of the Blue Fire descent at 4 am, walk another 2 kilometers to see the sunrise. It doesn't take long to walk down. If anyone can't walk, there is a rickshaw service. The way up is very expensive. The way down is about 200. Continue to Tumpaksewu, it takes 4 hours. Day 6 Wake up at 4 am to see the view. The mountain to Semaru erupts every 30 minutes. Continue to Tumpaksewu Waterfall, which is very beautiful. And walk a lot as usual. Travel back to Malang city. To prepare for the next day's flight. End of the trip.

Visiting Kawah Ijen is a truly surreal experience — even in the pouring rain. It rained almost the entire hike, turning the trail slippery and making the climb more challenging. Plus, the situation made it the perfect time to put your hiking gear to the test. We started to depart from our hotel at 12am and it took us around 2 hours ride to reach post. Typical temperature is 8–12°C but since it was raining and windy, the temperature was way lower than that. There are small warungs (stalls) at the post sell hot drinks, instant noodles, and rain ponchos for last-minute supplies. We collected our gas mask and head lights as well (included in our tour). Since it was raining heavily, the trail was packed with hikers and “Lamborghinis” — miner’s cart used to transport tourists. We took about 3 hours to reach the final checkpoint before descending to the crater lake and blue fire. Unfortunately, due to the heavy rain and trail congestion, the blue fire was no longer visible by the time we reached the final checkpoint before descending to the lake. We were also unable to proceed to the lake, as our guide advised it was too dangerous to continue under the current weather conditions. We enjoyed a good hour of clear weather before the rain started pouring again. Our descent began around 6 a.m., and we reached the starting post by 8 a.m, completely soaked. The hike is not extreme, but it is a steady 1.5–2 hour climb, if without the rain. People with knee issues or breathing problems may find it tough, especially with added weather challenges.

💰Per capita consumption: I spent less than 500 US dollars in total 💞Recommendation reason: The itinerary is really smooth and not special forces at all. 🗓️Itinerary: Land in Surabaya on the first day and rest for one night. Take a bus to Malang on the second day. Book a hotel in Malang for two nights. After checking in Malang, I found a car rental company on Facebook and got a motorcycle for 10 dollars a day. I started to sleep until 12 o'clock. Navigate to Bromo to watch the sunrise. After watching, ride back to the hotel to take a shower, walk around Malang City and sleep. 😴Wake up at 6 o'clock the next day and ride to Sewu Waterfall. Remember to bring a change of clothes. When you come back at about 12 o'clock, take a quick shower and change clothes, then pack your luggage and ask the car rental company to pick up the car from the hotel or leave the luggage at the hotel to walk around. Book a train or bus to Banyuwangi or Pengda Pier by yourself, and ask the local tour group to book a trip to Ijen Volcano!! Although it is tiring, it is a good movie. After playing, I came back and arrived at the bottom of the mountain around 9 o'clock. I went on the famous Ijen Volcano Trekking along with the Promo Volcano Trekking in Java Island right next to Bali Island in Indonesia. I applied for the tour after arriving there and went. It is a course that starts at dawn, trekking, sunrise, and volcano viewing, and then comes down. It is a fantastic otherworldly landscape. Highly recommended!!!

We started walking up at 1 am and arrived at around 3 am. It took about 2 hours to walk on a gentle slope to a very steep slope of 45 degrees. For those who can't handle it, there are horses and cars to take you up and down. The weather depends on how cooperative the day is. When we reached the top, we couldn't go down to see the flaming lava. The wind was very strong and the fog was thick. We couldn't see the way. With such strong winds, we had to find a hole to hide from the wind. When the sky started to brighten, we were able to walk up to see the sulfur lake. This area smells very bad of sulfur. We had to wear a mask. The trees around here look like they're burned all the time, turning them black. When we got down, we saw some workers, some locals, digging up sulfur. Some people sell the mineral to tourists. Some people carve it into various shapes. Below, they can set up tents and there are restaurants and bathrooms. The hike to the crater needs 2-2,5 hours especially for those who are not used to hike and u will need another 30 mins to see the blue fire….There are two ways to reach to the summit. u can go there on foot or u can rent the cart…so u will just sit down and will be pushed and pulled by 2 person. The cost varies….it us around 1.2 million for return if u start from the gate . The gate is opened at 2 am and we have to show the health medical letter and the ticket costs 5K idr for local tourist and 100K for foreigner.for weekends, it cost 7.500 IDR For local tourist and 150K for foreigner . Having walked for almost 2.5 hours, i reached the summit ….yeay and hard walk pays off….i see a very beautiful and stunning scenery there….it’s worth it….. . Bromo is more accessible and suitable for people of all fitness. Sunrise view is majestic and surreal. The jeep journey through the moonscape, endless queue of jeeps lining the mountain route, the patient wait as the cloudless sky slowly brightens, and Semeru puffing every half an hour. I will revisit Bromo one day. Ijen is interesting and beautiful too and do not regret the 1.5-2 hr hiking in the dark. slope can be pretty steep and slippery due to small pebbles. wear shoes with good grip to reduce risk of slipping. the harsh environment is evident from the huge crater and Volcanic lake (pH 0.3) and smothering H2S and SO2 cloud. if you plan to stay at the crater rim, gas canister is not necessary. rent gas canister only if you want to venture down into the crater. no plans to revisit Ijen in future despite the raw beauty.
