Shiping travel guide and discussion

The scenery of Yilong Lake in Shiping is excellent. It is one of Yunnan's nine plateau lakes, known as the "Pearl of the Plateau," and is a free-to-enter 4A-level scenic area. Yilong Lake boasts clear water, where you can spot the 'touchstone of water quality,' the sea cabbage flower, which demands extremely high water quality, proving its excellent ecological environment. The iconic landscape of Yilong Lake is that row of flat-top Crape Myrtle trees. Their unique shape is incredibly pleasing to the eye. Beneath the Crape Myrtle trees are the starting points for two routes: the left route and the right route. Right Route (Figures 1-10) This is a free-to-enter 4A-level wetland park with a 3-kilometer-long wooden boardwalk leading directly to the center of the lake. It's perfect for morning exercises, after-dinner strolls, or watching a sunset. This wooden boardwalk is only suitable for walking, not cycling. For cycling, there's a dedicated cycling path, which is further from the lake. Personally, I feel a leisurely walk is best, as it takes you directly to the center of the lake, allowing you to experience the plateau lake most intimately, and it's also a paradise for birdwatching. Left Route (Figures 12-20) Cycling around the lake is highly recommended. This closed ecological corridor is approximately 37 kilometers long, completely separated from motor vehicles, and has been rated as "China's Most Beautiful Plateau Lake Dedicated Cycling Path," making it very safe. The route is mostly flat, with a total elevation gain of only about 30 meters, making it easy for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts to enjoy. I visited in early April and saw pink Bauhinia flowers and purple-blue Jacaranda already in bloom. If you want to see them in full, spectacular bloom, it will be even more vibrant in another 5-6 days. The Left Route is also called Xiao Ruicheng, offering a rich experience of connecting "lake-forest-field-village." There's a cycling station at the starting point under the Crape Myrtle trees for bike rentals, and along the way, there are supply points and restrooms every 3-5 kilometers. It's recommended to visit in the crisp autumn air of September-November, or to see the spring flowers from February-May. The entire Yilong Lake area takes about half a day to explore. We played from noon until 6 PM and had a great time, and it's free! After leaving Yilong Lake, don't rush to take a taxi. Across the street is Hubin Road (Figure 20), the most representative main road in Shiping County. This road runs alongside Yilong Lake, featuring diamond-patterned bricks and a central tactile paving strip. It's one of the widest and most beautifully landscaped streets in the county. We carried watermelons we bought on the way, which were transported from Jinghong. No matter how much you buy, the seller will cut them into small pieces, put them in a fresh-keeping box, and provide toothpicks. Walking along the wide, tree-lined avenue, eating sweet watermelon, it's hard to describe how much local charm and enjoyment it brings. It was truly a wonderful experience...

Driving out of Shiping and winding deep into the Ailao Mountains, the fossil-built Laoxudian Village is tucked away among cascading forests. This rare fossil village lies far off the beaten path, completely free of ticket booths and commercial tourist shops. Its house walls, steps, and fences are all constructed from ancient marine fossils. The geological imprints of hundreds of millions of years have become an inseparable part of the villagers' everyday lives. The earthy-yellow stone cottages are scattered along the natural contours of the mountain, while moss blankets the narrow alleys. Branches of ancient trees droop gracefully into courtyards. In the morning, cooking smoke rises lazily as the elders sit by their doors sorting vegetables, their casual chatter drifting gently on the mountain breeze. The pace of life here is wonderfully slow. Most hurried passersby fail to notice the immense span of time anchored in this very land. We often fixate on immediate gains and losses, fret over fleeting struggles, and resist the inevitable changes brought by time, reluctant to accept the natural ebb and flow of life. Yet, standing quietly before a wall of fossils, you quickly realize that our decades on Earth are nothing but a fleeting instant in its grand history. The grudges we hold onto will eventually fade away with the passage of time. There is no need to cling stubbornly to every beautiful moment, nor should we resist the arrival of regrets. We must learn to make peace with the passing years and gracefully embrace all the highs and lows along the journey. As the setting sun casts a slanted glow over the stone walls, the fossil textures radiate a warm light. Strolling slowly out of the village, I found myself letting go of many deep-rooted obsessions. I gradually understood that making peace is never about giving in; it is about willingly flowing with time and walking your current path with a serene heart. Let us test the new tea with a fresh fire, and enjoy poetry and wine while we are still in our prime.

📍Attraction Address: By Yilong Lake, Shiping County, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province (Navigate to "Yilong Lake Niujiaozui," the entire lakeside race track is a sea of flowers, and the section from Xiaoruicheng on the north shore to Baxin is also stunning~) 🚗Transportation to the Attraction: A 10-minute drive from Shiping County town, the lakeside road is easy to drive and park along, with scattered pink flower trees visible along the way~ Take the lakeside tourist bus routes 1 or 2 to get off at "Niujiaozui Station," and you'll be surrounded by a sea of pink flowers as soon as you arrive—a blessing for the lazy ones~ 👍️Must-Visit Check-in Spots: 1. Pink Flower Pathway🌸 The lakeside race track is turned into a pink tunnel by soybean flower trees! The petals, fading from pink to white, hang in clusters on the branches. When the wind blows, it looks like pink clouds swaying. Standing in the middle of the road to take a panoramic shot, with flower trees, lake surface, and distant mountains in one frame, every shot feels like "a fairy tale come to life"~ 2. Lakeside Flower Mirror💦 The flower trees live by the water, and pink petals fall onto the surface of Yilong Lake, like scattered powder. In the early morning when the lake mist hasn't lifted, the flower trees reflect in the water, hazy like an ink painting. Wearing a light-colored dress standing by the shore, every casual photo is a gentle masterpiece~ 3. Flower Sea Cycling Path🚲 Rent a bike and ride along the lake! The wheels roll over fallen petals, and the flower trees on both sides are within reach. The wind blows petals onto your face, and the breeze during the ride smells fragrant. Record a video casually; no need for background music, the birdsong and wind sounds are healing enough~ 4. Dusk Flower Scenery🌇 You must come at sunset! The sunlight dyes the petals golden pink, the lake surface sparkles, and the shadows of the flower trees stretch long. Sitting on a rock by the lake watching the sunset, the pink flower sea paired with the golden lake surface is so beautiful it leaves you speechless~

Yunnan is literally the GOAT when it comes to wild mushrooms—it's called China’s “Kingdom of Wild Mushrooms” for a reason! 😍 Here you’ll find all the iconic shroomies: Matsutake, Ganba, Chanterelles, and so many others that are suuuper tasty. 🚨 PSA: Some wild mushrooms (like Jian Shou Qing, a bolete with a wild rep) can get risky if not cooked right—think accidental poisoning or even trippy hallucinations. 😅 But don’t freak out! The local restaurants always handle their mushrooms like pros, especially in their famous spicy hot pot. Everything is cooked perfectly so you can chow down worry-free. Pro tip: The Yunnan foodies have a quirky tradition—they never mix mushrooms in the pan. Every variety gets its own stir-fry session, meaning each mushroom serves up its unique flavor profile. You get max taste and true shroom vibes at every meal! If you’re around Shiping, you cannot skip Shiping Ancient City (No. 4 Xishan Road, Shiping County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture). Open 24/7, this place is a total vibe for culture, chill walks, and, of course, local eats. Friendly reminder: check out Trip.com for more info and epic travel hacks on Shiping Ancient City! Whether you’re here to explore ancient streets or just go full foodie mode, Shiping’s wild mushrooms are a must-taste. Get ready for a trip that’s both legendary and delicious! 🌈🍴

Shípíng (石屏) is an ancient town in the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in southeastern Yunnan, about 240 km (150 miles) from Kunming, the provincial capital. The stone-paved streets are really pretty, and the local tofu with all kinds of mushrooms is delicious (though some of the wild mushrooms can be poisonous, so you have to be careful!). I stayed in a guesthouse that was built in a 300-year-old traditional house—it was such a cozy place to relax. The courtyard there was especially nice, perfect for sitting down with a cup of tea.

Yilong Lake (异龙湖) in 石屏 is a beautiful spot where you could easily spend the whole day strolling around. It’s a large freshwater lake in Shiping County, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan, with a surface area of about 32 square kilometers (12 sq mi). The scenery is stunning, especially when the colorful lotus flowers are in bloom. The lake reflects the blue sky like a giant mirror, creating a calm and peaceful vibe. It’s also a great place to hit your 10,000 steps on your tracker, and the sunsets are really pretty. It’s definitely worth visiting twice—once in the morning and again in the evening (but best to skip noon time).

Looking for a treasure in Yunnan where you can relax without the crowds? Shiping is the place to be! Free from the hustle and bustle of Dali and Lijiang, the old streets here are paved with bluestone slabs polished smooth by time, where you can almost feel the prosperity of the trading port from centuries ago. The ancient town is filled with historic residences and small shops wafting with the scent of tofu. Stroll around for an afternoon, and you'll find that even the breeze carries a slow, cozy vibe. The best part is the sky, which is so clean it looks like it has a filter. Big, fluffy clouds float low, and every photo you snap is a masterpiece that needs no editing. Take a walk by Yilong Lake in the evening, when the sunset paints the clouds in shades of pink and orange, making the whole world feel soft and dreamy. It is truly a hidden paradise in southern Yunnan. ✅Practical Tips: We recommend setting aside 1–2 days to explore at a leisurely pace. Be sure to try the cold rice noodles and grilled tofu; you can get a lot of joy for just a few dollars. Visit outside of holidays, and the entire ancient town is practically yours—no need to fight for the perfect photo spot~

Gejiu | Stepping back into French nostalgia ✨ Visiting the Ge-Bi-Lin-Ping Railway site Heading to Gejiu, Honghe, for the final stop of my trip, I remained immersed in the legendary railway history of southern Yunnan 🚞 I took a taxi to the site. While chatting with the ride-hailing driver on the way, I mentioned the Ge-Bi-Lin-Ping Railway Company site, and he smiled and said, "Oh, that's what everyone calls the French Building restaurant." I navigated to Jinhu West Road and got off. A bright, cheerful, bright-yellow French-style building immediately caught my eye 🌼. There are three names on the map, but they all point to the same place: the Ge-Bi-Lin-Ping Railway Company site, the Ge-Bi-Shi Railway Exhibition Hall, and the French Building restaurant. I went to the first floor to ask the staff and was able to enter for free. Half of the space is used as a history exhibition hall, and the other half is a restaurant. Interestingly, in many rooms, historical artifacts coexist with dining tables and chairs, perfectly blending the historical heritage of the old building with the vibrancy of daily life. The building was constructed in the 18th year of the Republic of China, which is 1929, and was once the headquarters of the Ge-Bi-Lin-Ping Railway Company. The two-story building is very well preserved. The vintage floor tiles on the first floor, the old-fashioned fireplace, and the doors, windows, and red roof tiles of the entire building are all original components. With its iconic yellow walls and green frames, it is a highly representative old French-style building along the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. The famous Ge-Bi-Shi narrow-gauge railway connected Gejiu, Bisezhai, Jianshui Lin'an, and Shiping. I had previously visited Bisezhai in Mengzi and ridden the century-old train in Jianshui. Standing here, my fragmented travel memories all connected, as if opening a vivid history textbook. This is a unique mark of the era deeply imprinted on the land of Honghe. After visiting the French Building, a short walk away is the site of the old Gejiu Railway Station. The station was built in 1921 and was the terminus of the Ge-Bi-Shi Railway. It officially ceased operations in 1991, having weathered 70 years of history. The station building, platforms, and tracks are nestled among residential buildings. When I visited, the exterior walls of the station were being renovated. I didn't get to see the iconic "Gejiu Station" plaque, but I was fortunate enough to witness the precious moment of the old building's restoration and rebirth. The mottled, old tracks lie quietly in a corner of the city, whispering about the glorious railway past that belongs to Gejiu. After finishing the sightseeing and dining along this Honghe route and returning to Kunming, I recommend staying at the Vienna International Hotel (Kunming South High-Speed Railway Station, Municipal Government Branch). The hotel is close to the Kunming South High-Speed Railway Station and offers thoughtful high-speed rail transfer services, making travel to and from the station worry-free. It also has a free parking lot for those driving. The rooms are spacious and clean, and the bedding is soft and comfortable, allowing for a good rest after a long journey. You can even have authentic Yunnan rice noodles for breakfast. It is very suitable whether you are ending your trip in southern Yunnan or preparing to start the next leg of your Yunnan journey.

Travel Experience Shiping is free from the hustle and bustle of over-commercialization, making it a rare gem in southern Yunnan where you can truly slow down. The ancient town is crisscrossed with bluestone streets and alleys, dotted with Ming and Qing dynasty residences, and features the red walls and ancient cypresses of the Confucian Temple, all steeped in the cultural heritage of a "land of literature." Stroll leisurely without the pressure of checking off tourist spots. Grab some grilled tofu at a roadside stall, where the aroma of beans mingles with the scent of daily life—that is the unique flavor of Shiping. Board the narrow-gauge vintage train and sway through fields and villages for a full dose of retro atmosphere. In the evening, head to Yilong Lake, where the sunset paints the water and the breeze leaves you feeling completely relaxed. With its rich historical architecture and vibrant local life, this is the perfect place to slow your pace, enjoy delicious food, take in lake views, and savor a leisurely short trip. Detailed Travel Guide 📍Location: Shiping County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture 🎫Tickets: Shiping Ancient Town, Confucian Temple, Yuping Academy, and Yilong Lake Wetland Park are free; tickets are required for the narrow-gauge train; a small fee applies for the Yuan Jiagu Former Residence. 🗓️Recommended Itinerary (2-Day Slow Tour) Day 1: Ancient Town Culture + Retro Railway + Lakeside Sunset 1. Cold rice noodles, papaya water, and bayberries (when in season). ✅Recommended Restaurants: · Yongjian Restaurant: A long-standing local favorite. Their pan-fried fish is authentic and offers great value. · Yanwu Restaurant: Located in the ancient town with a nice atmosphere. Their tofu and bayberry pork ribs are well-regarded. 🏨Accommodation Advice Staying within Shiping Ancient Town is recommended to be close to the streets and alleys in a renovated old house. If you want lake views, stay in Baxin Town for easy access to Yilong Lake sunrises and sunsets. 💡Travel Tips 1. The ancient town has many alleys. Don't rely solely on navigation; wandering freely is more rewarding. 2. It is recommended to book the narrow-gauge train tickets in advance and prioritize window seats. You can also visit the station for photos without riding the train. 3. It gets windy at Yilong Lake in the evening, so bring a light jacket. In winter, you can bring bread to feed the black-headed gulls. 4. There are many mosquitoes in the rural areas, so bring mosquito repellent. Please try to take your trash with you. 5. For tofu, prioritize stalls crowded with locals for a better experience.

Wang Zengqi once said, "All the world's delicacies are just a bowl of simple, home-cooked food." There are so many ways to eat chicken in Yunnan. Zhanyi spicy chicken, Yongping braised chicken, and Jingpo ghost chicken each have their own unique flavors—bold, spicy, and aromatic, with exceptional seasoning. But if you want to taste the true freshness of the ingredients, you must try the 8-wild-mushroom steam pot chicken. The mushrooms come from Nanhua, the "Home of Matsutake," harvested from the mountains at an altitude of 2,500 meters and delivered fresh within 6 hours. Paired with Jingdong black-bone hens and steamed in traditional Jianshui purple clay pots—a piece of intangible cultural heritage—it's slow-steamed for 4 hours without a single drop of water added. The combination of Jingdong black-bone hen and 8 types of fresh wild mushrooms from Nanhua locks the essence of the forest into the soup, resulting in a clear, rich, and savory broth. After finishing the fresh chicken soup, the chicken meat can be repurposed into Jingpo ghost chicken, allowing you to enjoy two different flavors from one bird. The side dishes are also outstanding: 🌶 Xishuangbanna oil-seared yellow throat, crunchy and flavorful, gets better with every chew 🥔 Wild mushroom mashed potatoes, creamy, soft, and perfect with rice 🍖 Chuxiong mint-fried pork ribs, savory meat with a hint of mint 🎋 Sweet dragon bamboo shoot sashimi, sweet, crisp, and tender 🧈 Shiping tofu, slightly charred on the outside, soft and tender on the inside 📍 8 Wild Mushrooms · Yunnan Wild Mushroom Hot Pot (Multiple locations available)

When we were young, our parents were our guides, holding our hands as we discovered the world. Now, it's our turn to lead the way and accompany them as they take in the scenery at their own pace. With the arrival of Liqiu (the start of autumn), the summer heat is beginning to fade—the perfect time to take your parents on a trip. By avoiding crowded, popular tourist spots and choosing smaller cities with a slower pace and pleasant climate, you can ensure a journey that isn't rushed, doesn't require waiting in long lines, and isn't physically demanding. Let this trip become a warm memory that your parents will cherish for years to come. When choosing a destination for parents, the top priorities are avoiding crowds, minimizing physical strain, and maintaining a slow pace. Since the summer heat lingers after Liqiu and the temperature difference between day and night increases, I've selected 4 "retirement-style" slow-travel cities. Each has its own unique appeal, so you can choose based on your parents' preferences: 1. Shiping, Honghe, Yunnan: For parents who love authentic local life and prefer flat terrain · "Slow" living: This turtle-shaped ancient town is free from heavy commercialization; morning markets and grilled tofu stalls are part of daily life. The average daytime temperature in August is 23–25°C (73–77°F). It's cool in the mornings and evenings, and you'll need a light blanket at night. · Key to comfort: The ancient town is flat with almost no steep slopes or stairs, making it easy for parents to walk around without straining their legs. · Cuisine: Light dishes like soy milk with sticky rice are gentle on the stomach. 2. Shaoxing, Zhejiang: For parents with limited mobility who love the gentle charm of water towns · "Slow" and flat: The entire city has almost no steep stairs. The roads in the old town and scenic areas are level, making them easily accessible even for wheelchairs. · How to explore: No need for strenuous walking; you can see the entire water town by taking a black-awning boat. · Cuisine: Local dishes focus on steaming and blanching, making them soft, tender, and not greasy. 3. Liuba, Qinling, Shaanxi: For parents who love natural autumn colors and wellness · "Slow" and oxygen-rich: With a forest coverage rate of 92%, it's a natural oxygen bar perfect for "cleansing the lungs" and relaxing. · Best for autumn scenery: After Liqiu, the mountains and forests gradually turn into autumn colors (October–November is the best time). Driving along the Gaojiang Road feels like traveling through an oil painting. · Cuisine: Based on the concept of "medicine and food sharing the same origin," wellness dishes like American ginseng stewed with free-range chicken are nourishing and not greasy. 4. Shitai, Anhui: For parents who prefer landscapes and prioritize healthy drinking water · "Slow" and selenium-rich: As one of China's three major selenium-rich regions, the soil and spring water in Dashan Village are rich in selenium, making it a popular wellness destination in the Yangtze River Delta. · Trail conditions: The trails in scenic areas like Guniujiang and Xianyu Mountain are well-developed, requiring no high-intensity climbing. · Cuisine: Selenium-rich free-range chicken soup and Qiupu River fish offer authentic, natural flavors. 🌿 Two other options · Yuncheng, Shanxi: If your parents enjoy morning walks, the 24km rainbow trail along the Salt Lake is perfect for morning exercise. You can hear Puju opera singing and watch the water birds return. · Jinta, Jiuquan, Gansu: If you plan to travel in mid-October, the golden fairy tale of the Jinta Populus euphratica forest is stunning. There are sightseeing vehicles in the scenic area, and the roads are in good condition. 📝 A few tips for traveling with parents 1. Choose accommodation in the old town: Prioritize staying in the ancient town or the county seat. You'll be right in the middle of local life, allowing your parents to visit the morning market when they wake up early and return to the room to rest whenever they get tired. 2. Afternoon naps are a must: Schedule time to return to the hotel for a nap when the sun is strongest at noon. Avoiding the midday heat is crucial for seniors' energy levels. 3. Do your homework on food: Research local specialties in advance. If your parents have sensitive stomachs, you might want to pack some familiar snacks just in case they don't take to the local cuisine. Which of these 4 places appeals to you more? Do you prefer an ancient town full of local life, or are you more drawn to wellness-focused mountains and countryside? Tell me your preference, and I'll help you refine the itinerary!

Came to 8 Kinds of Wild Mushrooms to eat, and discovered that their steam pot chicken was the real star of the table! I'm still thinking about it! ✅ 8-Kind Wild Mushroom Steam Pot Chicken Slow-steamed for 4 hours in Jianshui intangible cultural heritage purple pottery steam pots, using deep mineral water from 200m underground at Fuxian Lake. It's the pure, natural freshness of chicken and wild mushrooms, and it's not greasy at all. The chicken is a 288-day free-range silky fowl from Wuliang Mountain, with black skin and tender meat, stewed until soft but not mushy. Paired with 8 kinds of wild mushrooms from the deep mountains of Nanhua, the matsutake slices really max out the freshness. The mushroom aroma wraps around the chicken aroma—one bite and it's so Yunnan! The other Yunnan dishes I ordered were also on point! ✅ Jingpo Ghost Chicken The chicken meat, stewed soft in the steam pot chicken, is shredded to order and mixed with lemon, millet chili, cilantro, and minced garlic. It's sour, fragrant, fresh, and spicy. The refreshing lemon perfectly balances the meatiness, and the chicken shreds are coated in sauce—firm but not dry. The biggest surprise is the two-way chicken! The Chuxiong mint fried pork ribs are dry, fragrant, and not greasy; the "Old Granny" mashed potatoes are dense and flavorful; and the Shiping fermented tofu is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It's like gathering all the specialties of Western and Southern Yunnan in one place. 📍 8 Kinds of Wild Mushrooms · Yunnan Wild Mushroom Hot Pot (Kunming Station Branch)

📍 Ancient Town Profile · Address: Shiping County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province · Title: The only ancient town in Yunnan selected as one of the first "Chinese Historical and Cultural Blocks," a provincial-level historical and cultural city, free admission · Vibe: Turtle-shaped city, a land of literature and history, tofu kingdom, a slow-paced town with zero commercialization · Recommended duration: 1–2 days (staying overnight is essential to experience the town's evenings and mornings) 🐢 Why is it called the "Ancient Town on a Turtle's Back"? The layout of Shiping Ancient Town is quite unique. The entire city is shaped like a turtle, with winding streets and alleys cutting the urban area into several "small blocks," resembling the texture of a turtle shell. Legend has it that the county seat was built on the shell of a giant turtle floating on the water. Every household in the city dug a well, and it's said that a bucket dropped into a well at an eastern house could be retrieved from a western neighbor's well a few days later—because the underground water sources are connected. Even more amazingly, the five deep wells in the east, west, south, north, and center of the city have served as the natural brine source for making Shiping tofu for 600 years. "Well water for tofu, only in Shiping"—this saying is no exaggeration; it's a daily reality that the people of Shiping have lived for 600 years. 🚗 How to get there? High-speed rail + taxi (recommended): Take the high-speed rail from Kunming South Station to Jianshui Station, about 1.5 hours. After exiting the station, take a taxi to Shiping, about 1 hour. You can also take a bus. Bus: There are direct buses to Shiping from Kunming South Bus Station. Self-driving: About 3 hours from Kunming. Exit the highway at Shiping East, take the lakeside road into the city, and you'll see Yilong Lake along the way—the scenery is better than the highway. ✨ Must-visit highlights 1. Shiping Confucian Temple—Built in the Yuan Dynasty, free admission. The wood carvings on the Lingxing Gate are exquisite, and the stone railings of the Panchi Pool are finely carved. The century-old trees outside the walls contrast with the red walls and blue tiles, making it the most scholarly corner of the ancient town. Local elders often play chess and chat inside the temple, full of local life. 2. Yuping Academy (Shiping Museum)—A museum converted from a Qing Dynasty imperial examination site, free admission. The courtyard has towering ancient trees and quiet bamboo forests, with a "Dragon Gate" archway—perfect for photos in Hanfu. 3. Yuan Jiagu Former Residence—The Qing Dynasty old home of Yuan Jiagu, the only top scholar (Zhuangyuan) in Yunnan's history, free admission. It features the typical "four-in-five-courtyard" layout. The museum displays his manuscripts and imperial examination papers, allowing you to truly feel the depth of Yunnan's literary heritage. 4. Shiping Tofu Museum—Located at No. 26 Zhengjie Pu, it is the only tofu-themed museum in Yunnan Province. You can learn about the complete process of making tofu with well water and even try it yourself. 5. Shiping Meter-Gauge Railway Station—A French-style railway station from 1930 that is still in operation. The yellow exterior walls and green window frames make for great retro photos. 6. Guanyinsi Lane Unnamed Tofu Stall—The most hidden and authentic food corner in Shiping. The alley hides a few small shops without signs, frequented almost exclusively by locals. Order a couple of drinks, sit around the charcoal fire, and grill tofu—this is the true local life of Shiping. 7. Yilong Lake Cycling—Not far from the ancient town, the ecological corridor around the lake is about 37 km long. It is separated from motor vehicles and has been rated as "China's most beautiful highland lake dedicated track." The boardwalks extend into the water, with blue-green lake water rushing towards you—especially gentle at sunset. 🗺️ Recommended itinerary 2-day, 1-night slow travel route: · Day 1 Ancient Town Cultural Route: Enter through Tonggong Gate → Shiping Confucian Temple → Yuping Academy → Yuan Jiagu Former Residence → Tofu Museum → Watch the sunset by Panchi Pool in the evening → Visit the tofu stalls in Guanyinsi Lane at night and eat grilled tofu around the charcoal fire · Day 2 Lake and Morning Mist Route: Go to the West Gate Market early in the morning to experience the most authentic local life → Head to Yilong Lake in the morning, cycle or stroll along the lakeside boardwalk → Return in the afternoon 🍜 What to eat? Tofu is the only protagonist. Shiping tofu is made with natural well water from the ancient town. In 2012, it was awarded National Geographical Indication protection, and in 2017, its production technique was listed as a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage in Yunnan. There are various forms like baojiang (creamy) tofu, popcorn tofu, and chicken heart tofu. Grilled until puffed like a ball, biting into it releases hot, creamy soy milk with a rich bean aroma and charcoal smokiness. Local favorites: · Dainiang Erniang BBQ: The sugar water longan is delicious, and the tofu and snacks are all excellent · Laojie Small Rice Rolls: The small meat skewers and sugar water bayberry are signature dishes · Mali Snacks: The baojiang tofu and grilled beef jerky are highly rated The above are all in the area of the Confucian Temple and Yuping Academy in the ancient town, within walking distance, and you won't go wrong. After quitting my job to travel, I've increasingly disliked traveling just to "check off" sights. Especially during National Day, instead of fighting crowds in popular cities, I'd rather find a small city with scenery, an authentic local atmosphere, and a slow pace. If you're also looking to "reverse travel" this year, check out these 6 places👇 🌿 Haiyan, Zhejiang: Catch the breeze at Nanbei Lake, stroll through Qiyuan Garden—this small city has a natural, quiet Jiangnan feel. 🍵 Fuliang, Jiangxi: Ancient villages, tea mountains, and porcelain culture—perfect for a slow-paced two-day stay. 🏡 Longyan, Fujian: See the tulou (earthen buildings) and eat Hakka cuisine; if you love cultural travel, don't miss this. 🏯 Yuncheng, Shanxi: Yongle Palace, Salt Lake, and Guanque Tower—architecture buffs will be in heaven. 🌾 Kaiping, Guangdong: Diaolou (watchtowers) scattered among rice paddies and villages; Zili Village and Chikan are both worth exploring at a leisurely pace. 🌊 Shiping, Yunnan: Cycle around Yilong Lake, explore Shiping Ancient Town, and grab some freshly grilled Shiping tofu—it's so comfortable you won't want to leave. In recent years, official travel guides for Shiping have also listed the ancient town, Yilong Lake, and tofu as core local experiences. They might not be completely "unknown," but compared to the top-tier National Day destinations, they're much better suited for those who want to slow down. If I had to choose, I'd most want to go to Shiping and Kaiping. Which small city do you want to sneak away to for National Day?

A 4-city tour, a treasure-filled route from the southwest to the southeast🏃 Honestly, before I set off, I never imagined I could string Qingchuan, Lanxi, Shiping, and Ningde together. But after completing the trip, I realized this route is a paradise for lovers of Chinese architecture, rivers, and lakes. Whether sunny or rainy, each place has its own unique beauty, looking as if it stepped right out of a painting. 🚩Day 1 Qingchuan: The old-world charm of Yinping Village Arrive in Qingchuan in the early morning and start by wandering through Yinping Village. The ancient trees and bluestone paths at the village entrance are full of character. If you catch a sunny day, the sunlight filtering through the trees against the gray tiles and white walls of the old houses makes for great photos. In the afternoon, head to Qingxi Ancient City. Walking along the city walls, you can see the river flowing past the city. Sitting on the city tower and catching the breeze is incredibly relaxing. 📍Tips: I recommend staying near the ancient city; you can enjoy the night lights, and it makes morning sightseeing much more convenient. 🚩Day 2 Lanxi: The maze of Zhuge Bagua Village Lanxi is best explored at a leisurely pace in the afternoon. The Zhongchi Pond in Bagua Village is the main highlight; the layout of the entire village is stunning when viewed from above. Visiting on a rainy day gives it the feel of an ink wash painting, with mist swirling between the pond and the rooftops, creating a perfect atmosphere. Don't forget to visit the Dagong Hall and the Prime Minister's Ancestral Hall; the carved wooden windows and Chinese-style courtyards are incredibly photogenic. 📍Tips: There are many small alleys in the village, so follow the markers on the ground to avoid getting lost. For dinner, try the local chicken stew in the village. 🚩Day 3 Shiping: The gentle dusk of Yilong Lake Shiping is such a pleasant surprise! I highly recommend walking a short section of the road around Yilong Lake. On a sunny evening, the lake surface shimmers with golden light, and with the silhouettes of distant mountains and old trees on the shore, it’s incredibly peaceful. The Confucian Temple and Yuping Academy in the ancient city are also worth a visit; the buildings are well-preserved, and it’s comfortable to explore without the crowds. 📍Tips: Shiping tofu is a local specialty. I could eat 10 skewers of the roadside grilled version dipped in chili powder in one sitting. 🚩Day 4 Ningde: The sea breeze of Sanduao Save the last day for the landscapes of Ningde. The sea fishing rafts at Sanduao are spectacular, but I highly recommend visiting Jingtaishan Park in the city center, where you can overlook the entire river and the old city architecture. If the weather is clear, the view is fantastic. If you have extra time, head to the Beiqi Mudflats in Xiapu; the light and shadows on the mudflats at dusk are stunning—you won't be able to stop taking photos. 📍Tips: You must try the seafood! The razor clams and oysters in Ningde are incredibly fresh, and you can't go wrong with any local food stall. 📌Practical tips: Transportation: I recommend self-driving or hiring a car for this route. The distances between cities aren't short, but the road conditions are good, and the scenery along the way is healing in itself. If you're starting from Chongqing, you can fly to Guangyuan and rent a car from there. Attire: Bring plenty of light-colored clothing; it looks great against the backdrop of Chinese architecture. Remember to bring a transparent umbrella for rainy days—it's a great prop for setting the mood. Itinerary: One day per city is enough. There's no need to rush; taking your time allows you to encounter unexpected surprises. This route isn't too crowded, making it perfect for those who want to escape the crowds and truly experience Chinese landscapes and ancient architecture. After completing the trip, you'll realize that poetry and distant lands can truly be connected into a single journey.
