Cars from outside can't reach the village, so we had to walk about 3 kilometers (1 kilometer of which was purely uphill!). Despite the tiring walk, the view from the room was absolutely amazing – a 360-degree panorama. On sunny days, the blue sky contrasting with the large white clouds is breathtaking. Just kidding, here’s a summary of what to wear in Georgia. I went in early spring, and I feel that in winter, a thick down jacket is enough. Actually, early spring is more like early winter dressing! 1️⃣ Tbilisi and surrounding areas: I wore this off-shoulder top + just pants, with a shell jacket draped over my arm. When the weather was sunny, I took it off for photos; when it was windy or rainy, I put it on. This off-shoulder top is like a long-sleeve autumn shirt, made of soft autumn fabric, suitable for spring and autumn (not summer). If you go during New Year, I recommend adding a fleece/down inner layer for warmth, then wear a jacket on top. 2️⃣ Kazbegi: Much colder! My experience in Kazbegi felt like winter, and of course, I brought a down jacket. Having been to Iceland, I’m not afraid at all. I wore the off-shoulder top as a base layer (close to the skin), a fleece as the mid-layer, and if you go in winter, add a down jacket, then a shell jacket on top (because windproofing is a must! Don’t underestimate it). For pants, if you feel cold, add wool thermal leggings. These wide-leg pants can fit two layers of thermal leggings/wool pants underneath (I wore this way in Iceland in October and wasn’t cold at all), but make sure they are merino wool. In my feeling, Georgia is a bit colder than Beijing, but once the sun comes out, you can take beautiful photos and it’s not that cold. When it’s windy and rainy, it feels like -10°C. Because this top is off-shoulder / one-shoulder / straight neckline and made of pure cotton, it’s very suitable for spring and autumn, so it’s really, really practical. I only brought one base layer. This 9-day trip is a self-planned journey for our group of four, focusing on renting a car to explore from city to mountain. Part 1: The Charm of the Old Town (Day 1-2) Starting in Tbilisi, soak in the enchanting architecture of the Old Town, Narikala Fortress, and the Holy Trinity Cathedral before preparing for the adventure ahead. Part 2: The Paradise of Mestia (Day 3-6) The dream route begins! We head to Mestia, the heart of Svaneti, known for its iconic ancient towers. Spend three full days trekking to Koruldi Lake and visiting the UNESCO World Heritage village of Ushguli to marvel at the Shkhara Glacier. Staying at the Heshkili Huts is an experience not to be missed. Part 3: The Icon of Kazbegi (Day 7-9) End the trip with a visit to Kazbegi, Georgia's iconic destination. Hike up to the Gergeti Trinity Church with Mount Kazbek as the backdrop and embark on a trekking adventure in Juta Valley to see Chaukhi Lake. This May, I spent a month in Georgia, experiencing the end of winter and the beginning of spring simultaneously. Climbing mountain paths where snow had yet to fully melt, I felt the breath of life emerging amidst the grandeur of nature. Winter's lingering presence in the mountains and the start of the journey In May, Georgia's winter had not yet departed from the mountains. I ascended the paths, where the wind pushed clouds over the low-lying snow, and the mountain ranges breathed in white light, revealing their majesty. The river flowed slowly, holding onto the memory of ice, and at the start of the path, I asked myself: What is spring? The sound of melting snow, the scent of awakening earth, and the thin smoke rising from village chimneys—these were the answers to my question. The tranquility of Mestia, the peace of silence Mestia's mornings were exceptionally serene. The shadows of ancient stone towers stretched long, and faint footprints on the snow seemed to speak of the peace that had settled overnight. A dog followed me aimlessly, and sheep raised their heads at every corner, becoming a natural part of the scenery. In a landscape that needed no words, where silence replaced everything, I saw the form of 'peace' that I had long lost. Awakening earth, the warmth of life As the day arrived, the snow sparkled and melted under the sunlight, and beneath it, spring began to breathe quietly. The wind remained cold, but within it, there was unmistakably the warmth of life. Descending the mountain, the sound of water deepened between the gorges. Ice shattered, and the river carried the color of earth, roaring with a rough sound. It was not just spring—it was the sound of the frozen earth 'awakening.' An honest season, time standing still Passing through the Truso Gorge and heading to Tbilisi, I once again felt how honest the seasons of this land are. Human time flows quickly, but nature's time stands still. In Georgia, spring does not arrive; rather, winter slowly retreats. As the shadows of the mountains stretched long and the evening sunlight spread in red hues, I paused to look back on the path I had traveled. Snow and wind, clouds and earth, and myself walking among them. The journey had ended, but the serene and majestic landscapes of Georgia still lingered within me, like snow, leaving a profound resonance. We rented a car in Tbilisi and drove to Kazbegi in May. The trip took about 3-4 hours. It rained the entire way, and snowed as we approached Kazbegi. The road was quite difficult, with uphill sections. The road was good, but not so good, and full of potholes, as it's a truck-friendly route. If you're not a strong driver, it's best to rent a car with a driver (it's much more comfortable, lol). Along the way, we encountered car accidents and landslides, which forced the road to be closed. However, police were there to clear the way, allowing us to continue driving. When parking in various places, be careful of getting stuck in the mud like we did. Luckily, there were kind people nearby who helped us for free, even though we wasted almost two hours, lol. Overall, if I go again, I'll definitely hire a car with a driver. Trust me, it's more expensive, but it's so much more worth it, lol.
