Rumor has it that local village girls, heartbroken over unrequited love or forced marriages, used to throw themselves off this very ledge into the abyss in despair... Luckily, times have changed. Nowadays, girls aren't jumping off the edge—instead, they're snapping mind-blowing photos on the "Trolltunga" wearing flowing dresses with the mountains in the background. I set a goal to go on a solo hiking trip, and for this journey, I set my sights on Norway’s Trolltunga. The round-trip distance is about 28 kilometers. Between the hike itself, stopping for photos, and soaking in the views at the top, it took me a total of 14-15 hours. I started at 5 AM and didn't get back until 10 PM—my legs were absolutely shot! It was an exhilarating, challenging, and breathtaking hike that had it all. The entire trail felt like stepping into another world; there are no roads or paved paths, just small stone markers or painted signs left by others to guide the way, which made the trek even more exciting. The view everyone comes for is at the very end: the "Troll's Tongue," a rock ledge jutting out over a massive cliff with water flowing far below. It’s an unforgettable sight where fear meets beauty. More than just a photo op, it was a unique travel experience unlike any other. Seeing hikers from all over happily making their way up and down the trail together was amazing. It's hard to believe that such exhaustion could lead to such pure happiness.

#adventuretrips 📍Norway Trolltunga Trolltunga is one of the three most famous rock formations in southern Norway. It's called the Devil's Tongue 'cause this rock just sticks out horizontally from the cliff, hanging almost a kilometer above the ground. (Fun fact: in Norwegian, 'troll' means troll or giant, and 'tunga' means tongue). The hike is about 23-28km round trip, and it's not too steep, so it's super beginner-friendly ⛰️ Since this was my first solo trip from the University of Oslo and my first real hiking + camping experience, I decided to join a tour. Looking back, it was such a good call. Thanks, Norway, for giving me such a perfect first overnight hiking experience [哭惹R] I went with Trolltunga Adventure. Our group was about 10 people, with two guides leading the way. They kept us fed with snacks the whole time and made sure everyone got their turn on the rock for photos. It looks pretty scary from the side, but when you're actually walking on it, you don't even feel how high up you are. It's totally safe!! For dinner, they served us sandwiches and reindeer meat rice 🦌. I can't really remember how it tasted, but it was warm and super fragrant 😋 (Check out the rice pic in p5!). After dinner at the campsite, our guide took us on a little extra hike. When we got back, we roasted marshmallows and chatted by the bonfire as the sun was setting. The next morning, the guides woke us up with oatmeal and hot cocoa. When I opened my tent and saw the fjord, I honestly thought I was still dreaming. It was just so incredibly stunning [哇R] Our group had people from Amsterdam, Greece, Germany, France, Boston, and the Bermuda Islands. I was chatting with all these different people during the hike and by the bonfire. It was amazing to see how different everyone's lives can be, yet how free they all are. I felt kinda dazed on the way down, like some feelings are just meant to stay in the mountains. But I'm really glad I feel more connected to the world now. You have to start the Trolltunga hike from Odda town, which is near Bergen. I didn't rent a car, so getting there and back from Oslo by myself was a bit of a hassle. Some viewpoints are beautiful. Others make your stomach drop just looking at the photo. Trolltunga is definitely the second kind. Perched roughly 1,100 metres above sea level, this enormous slab of rock sticks horizontally out from a mountain above Lake Ringedalsvatnet in Norway. And yes… People actually stand on the edge. But the view is what makes this place unforgettable. Deep blue water sits thousands of feet below, surrounded by enormous mountains, waterfalls and layers of Norwegian wilderness stretching toward the horizon. The hike itself is an adventure — roughly 27 kilometres round trip, depending on the route and conditions — so reaching the viewpoint feels like an achievement rather than simply arriving at a lookout. And that makes the final shot even better. Imagine the reel starting with tired footsteps on the trail. Quick cuts. Rocks. Mist. Mountains. Then silence. The camera reaches the final ridge and suddenly reveals Trolltunga hanging over the valley. Text appears: “The hike was worth it.” Then the wide shot. That’s the moment people stop scrolling. The landscape looks almost too perfect to be real, but there’s no special effect needed. Trolltunga is the photograph everyone has seen: a tongue of rock jutting horizontally from a cliff 700 metres above a glacial lake with a person standing on the end looking impossibly small. It’s on a lot of bucket lists. Here’s the honest version. The hike is 27km return from the lower car park with around 800 metres of elevation gain. It takes 8-12 hours depending on fitness and conditions. This is not a casual walk. Tha needs proper hiking boots, waterproofs, warm layers (the weather changes fast even in summer), plenty of food and at least 3 litres of water. The stream water on the route is clean and drinkable. Start very early. The car park fills up quickly in summer and the path to the rock becomes crowded. Being at Trolltunga by 9am means tha gets the experience and the photographs without 200 other people in the frame. An alternative starting point from Skjeggedal (closer to the rock) reduces the distance to about 10km return. The road up to Skjeggedal car park is steep, narrow and requires a car with decent clearance. The moment tha stands on the tongue itself: absolutely worth every step of the 27km. Bring food. Bring a proper camera. And budget an extra hour for just sitting there trying to take it all in.
