Its biggest highlights are: a high-altitude lake, the North Cascade Mountains, and golden larch trees in autumn. 🥾 Route Overview Typically starts from the Cutthroat Lake Trailhead: Cutthroat Lake → Cutthroat Pass · Round trip approximately 10.8–11 miles (17.4–17.7 km) · Total elevation gain approximately 2,000 ft (610 m) · Difficulty: Moderate to hard · Requires returning via the same route · Highest point, Cutthroat Pass, approximately 6,800 ft (2,073 m) Here's a point of confusion: Cutthroat Lake itself is not the end point. Many people turn back after reaching the lake, but the truly beautiful part is continuing up the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) to Cutthroat Pass. 🍂 Especially beautiful in autumn One of the reasons this route is so famous in Washington, D.C., is its larch trees. Around late September to early October, the larch trees on the hillsides change from green to: Yellow → Golden yellow → Golden orange This, combined with the dark peaks of the North Cascades, is stunning. 🏞️ Cutthroat Lake The first half of the trail passes through forest before reaching the beautiful Cutthroat Lake. The lake, its reflections, and the surrounding mountains are already worth seeing. But continuing up to the pass, the view suddenly opens up. ⛰️ Cutthroat Pass Upon reaching the pass, you'll see a very typical North Cascades mountain landscape: layered mountains + high valleys + larch trees + rock walls. This area is also part of the Pacific Crest Trail. If the weather is good, stopping for lunch near the pass is a wonderful experience.

My second was a winter getaway, staying overnight to experience the deep snow. My third visit was just yesterday, in the height of summer. For the best experience, I recommend starting at Artist Point to see Mt. Baker and do some hiking nearby. By midday and into the afternoon, the light shifts perfectly for viewing Mt. Shuksan. Afterward, head down to Heather Meadows for a stroll—the 1.5-mile Bagley Lakes Trail loop is incredibly easy and flat. Wrap up the day at Picture Lake to catch the iconic reflection of the mountains. Simply perfect! Interestingly, while the area is named after Mt. Baker, the most prominent peak you'll often see is actually Mt. Shuksan. While Shuksan is rugged and jagged, it doesn't hold nearly as much snow as Baker, which remains brilliantly white even in late August. Mount Baker is truly an underrated gem; despite its world-class scenery, it’s designated as a National Forest rather than a National Park. The cost is also incredibly low—a day pass is just $5 per vehicle.

The PCT junction at 5,900 ft is where southbound thru-hikers peel off; I sat there 20 minutes and counted four of them in 2025. From the junction it's a grind up to McAlester Pass (6,150 ft) then a long switchback descent through old burn regrowth—wildflowers insane in late July, but no shade after 11 am. The standard stats: 7.2 mi / 11.6 km loop, ~2,200 ft / 670 m gain, 3.5–5 hours depending on photo stops.Counterclockwise means a steadier climb through silver fir and slide alder, then breaks into heather slopes above timberline where Lake Ann sits cupped in a cirque beneath the Maple Pass ridge. I hit snow patches on the north-facing switchbacks even in late July—microspikes would have been overkill but trekking poles saved my knees on the descent. The ridge walk between Heather Pass and Maple Pass is the payoff: 360° on Glacier Peak, the Mesahchie range, and a strip of azure that is Lake Ann from above. Bugs were brutal in the lower forest (no-see-ums in July), so DEET + a bug net hood were worth the luggage space. Few people visiting Artist Point for the first time aren’t stunned by the view. As soon as you get out of the parking lot, you’re greeted by a million-dollar view with two volcanoes side by side. Mt. Baker is on the left, and Mt. Shuksan is on the right. The Chain Lakes Loop circles right at their feet. Almost no trees block the view along the way. Snow-capped peaks, glaciers, lakes, and alpine meadows keep changing, making you want to stop and take photos every few minutes. What I truly love about this place isn’t any single viewpoint but that the scenery never seems to end. Many trails are about reaching the destination. Chain Lakes Loop feels like walking forward inside a painting. Later, I found out that the name Artist Point wasn’t chosen by chance. Over a hundred years ago, this was a place where many painters sought inspiration. Standing here and looking around, it’s easy to see why—no matter which direction you look, it’s like a landscape painting. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a marmot along the way. The entire route has no particularly technical sections, yet it almost condenses Washington’s alpine scenery into one day. Trail info: 📍 Chain Lakes Loop 🥾 About 7–8 miles (loop) 📈 Elevation gain: about 1,800 ft 🌼 Best season: July–September (wildflowers in bloom, alpine scenery) 🚗 Artist Point road is usually closed in winter and open only in summer. The parking lot requires an America the Beautiful Pass or Northwest Forest Pass; the Discover Pass is not accepted. Weekends in summer are busy, so arriving early in the morning makes it easier to find a parking spot.

After the 2006 landslide on the road, the usual summit route for Glacier Peak changed, extending from 2 days to 3 days and the distance from 20 miles to 36 miles. I heard fewer people go because of the longer distance, but the camps still feel as crowded as a market. 📍Day 1 Hiked all the way from North Fork Sauk Trailhead to a basin formed by glacier melt at 6,700 feet. There were really a lot of campers here, at least a dozen groups, all preparing for the summit attempt the next day. ⛰️Summit day Started at 3 AM in whiteout conditions. The weather forecast only mentioned strong winds, so we naively expected strong winds plus clear skies. Instead, we got two hours of clear skies, then strong winds and clouds after 8 AM. The worst part was the clouds—they were real, and we spent the whole time walking inside them, throwing up 🤮 Luckily, the route was relatively simple. About 90% of people didn’t rope up; we did and felt like outliers. But the crevasses were all visible along the route, and a boot track nearby was abandoned two weeks ago because it was full of crevasses. Is it really safe not to rope up in mid-July? In the end, we made it to the summit smoothly, but saw nothing 🤡 ⛺️Descent On the way back, we moved the tent from the 6,700-foot basin to White Pass. This area has plenty of campsites, so no worries about them being full. This way, the third day’s exit only took five hours. With this, all six Washington peaks plus Hood are done—celebrate 🎉 Climbing 6 peaks in 70 days this year is quite something. 📍 Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm Trail 12 miles, 4000 ft, 2.5-hour drive from Seattle On the way back from summiting Sahale Mountain, we took the classic North Cascades National Park hike, Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm Trail (you can see my other post for the Sahale Mountain summit, highly recommend Boston Basin Trail) Along the trail, you can see surrounding peaks and lots of mountain goats. We saw at least 20, nearly half of them were babies. These goats aren’t afraid of people and ran right beside the trail, so adorable. We also saw several chubby marmots. This trail is long and gentle, with switchbacks that make you question your life choices. But you don’t have to go to the end of the trail to turn back and still enjoy beautiful views. Don’t go off the trail; the alpine meadows are fragile, so please don’t damage them. Parking is limited, so try to arrive early.

North Cascades National Park Heather Lake Trail takes you through a lush forest and ends at a serene alpine lake. The highest elevation of the trail is approximately 1,000 feet (305 meters). Located about a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Seattle, this trail spans roughly 5 miles round trip. Due to rain and muddy conditions, it took us about 4 hours to complete. The hike leads through a damp forest, and we encountered a brief drizzle along the way. The trail was slippery—tree roots, rocks, and mud made it necessary to tread carefully. As we approached Heather Lake, the rain stopped just in time. Cliffs stood quietly across the lake, and the crystal-clear water reflected the mountain shadows and dispersing clouds. The lake, cradled by towering cliffs, felt exceptionally tranquil. We rested by the lakeside for a while, breathing in the fresh scent of rain-washed pine and earth. Despite muddy shoes, a sense of calm washed over us. On the way back, stepping through the mud and soaking our pant legs didn’t bother us at all— This kind of post-rain hike felt just perfect.
