Play around with just 1,000 yuan in September? Anyone know what I mean?
With September arriving and the student rush subsiding, airfares and hotel prices plummeted. After rummaging through my bills, I managed to put together this itinerary for 8 cities. One-way transportation was mostly within the budget of high-speed rail or discounted flights, and accommodation was around 150-200 RMB per person per night. For just over 1000 RMB, you can really have a fantastic trip. Don't rush to disagree, read on.
1️⃣ Zhuhai City|Guangdong
Zhuhai is a city perfect for sleeping in. Don't rush to Chimelong in the morning; tickets are expensive and it's crowded. Entering after 3 PM is more cost-effective, allowing you to enjoy the park until the evening parade, saving you the time spent queuing in the sun during the day.
📍 At Chimelong International Ocean Resort, the blue-lit dome of the Whale Shark Aquarium is very photogenic, but remember to check the show schedule on the official account beforehand to avoid peak crowds. After leaving in the evening, take a taxi to Lovers' Road, which is only a 20-minute drive.
Don't just walk the middle section of Lovers' Road. Stroll slowly south from Haitang Park, enjoying the shade of palm trees and the salty sea breeze. Shared bikes are available; for just a few yuan, you can ride to the Zhuhai Fisher Girl statue to watch the sunset.
⚠️ Don't buy coconuts at the scenic area entrance; they're 15 yuan each. A small shop a couple hundred meters further away offers them for only 8 yuan. If you want seafood in the evening, go to Chaoyang Market and choose your own. Restaurants nearby charge by weight for processing, which is half the price of the stalls in the scenic area.
2️⃣ Nanyang City | Henan Province
I spent the majority of my budget on transportation for this stop in Nanyang, but it was worth it. Xixia Funiu Mountain Laojieling Dinosaur Relics Park is far from the city center; driving is the most convenient option. If you don't have a car, take the tourist bus from the bus station; it takes about two hours one way and costs only a few dozen yuan round trip.
⏰ Depart at 8 am and visit the Dinosaur Relics Park first. The indoor exhibits are cool and suitable for families with children.
In the afternoon, head up Laojieling. The cable car costs 120 yuan round trip, and the hike takes two to three hours; those with poor stamina should probably skip it. It's windy at the summit, so bring a light jacket.
🍜 At the foot of the mountain, a bowl of noodles at a local farmhouse costs only 12 yuan—a generous portion, much better than the 30-yuan boxed lunches in the scenic area.
⚠️ Remember, the park closes at 5 PM; don't miss the last bus.
3️⃣ Xuzhou City|Jiangsu
This stop in Xuzhou is all about eating and strolling, and it won't cost much. Yunlong Lake is free, but walking around it takes two to three hours. I highly recommend renting an electric scooter; it's much more comfortable to go wherever you want.
⏰ The light is softest after 5 PM, making the lake shimmer with gold—perfect for silhouette photos without needing any color correction.
From the east gate of Yunlong Lake, it's a ten-minute walk to Hubushan Old Street. The lamb skewers and flatbread rolls here are worth trying; you can eat your fill for around 40-50 yuan per person.
🚄 A taxi from Xuzhou East Railway Station to Yunlong Lake costs about 25 yuan. Metro Line 2 also goes there, but it's a bit of a walk. If you're on a tight budget, stay in a hostel bed near Yunlong Lake for about 60 yuan a night, and you can even go for a run by the lake in the morning.
4️⃣ Huangshan City|Anhui
For Huangshan, I recommend finding accommodation near Tunxi Old Street; it's cheap and convenient. Choose between Hongcun and Xidi; I chose Hongcun because the reflections on the Moon Pond are truly beautiful. The entrance fee is 104 yuan; booking online in advance can save you a few yuan.
⏰ Arrive before 7:30 am to avoid tourists and take photos without any passersby.
In the afternoon, head to Chengkan Ancient Village; it's less famous but offers a quieter experience.
📍 The autumn harvest field at the village entrance is perfect for harvesting chili peppers and corn in September, creating a beautiful, photogenic display of colors. The entrance fee is 107 yuan, more expensive than Hongcun, but much less crowded. Whether it's worth it depends on your preference.
⚠️ Village guides will take you across the "Peace Bridge," not forcing you to pay, but they will subtly suggest giving incense money. If you don't want to give, just wave them away. The Ancient Huizhou Cultural Tourism Area is large; you can drive to connect several points, but if you take public transportation, you need to plan ahead, as there are basically no buses after 5 pm.
5️⃣ Yichun City|Jiangxi
Yichun Mingyue Mountain is known for its combination of hiking and hot springs.
⏰ It's recommended to hike in the morning. The Qingyun Plank Road at the summit is built on the edge of a cliff, with a sea of clouds below. It looks dangerous but is actually very stable; those afraid of heights can stay on the inner side. Tickets are 120 yuan, and the cable car round trip is 150 yuan. If you exercise regularly, you can take the cable car up and hike down, saving on the return ticket and seeing the waterfalls along the way.
At the foot of the mountain is Wentang Town, where Gujingquan Street is lined with foot bath shops. For 20 yuan per person, you can soak your feet in selenium-rich hot spring water; your legs will feel instantly relaxed after a long day. Accommodation in town is inexpensive; clean and hygienic guesthouses are around 100 yuan a night.
🍜 For dinner, try the local selenium-rich salted preserved eggs with a bowl of Runtian rice noodles. A hearty meal for two will only cost a little over 50 yuan.
⚠️ The cable car down the mountain stops operating at 5:30 PM, so don't be late. You need to head to the cable car station before 4 PM.
6️⃣ Beijing
Beijing is the most budget-constrained stop, but it's not impossible. Tickets to the Forbidden City are 60 yuan, but you must book them 7 days in advance through the official WeChat mini-program; if you're slow, they'll be sold out.
⏰ Rush in as soon as it opens at 8:30 am, starting with the Meridian Gate. Walk the entire central axis before the tour groups arrive, then detour to the Cining Palace and the Treasure Gallery – less crowded, better experience.
In the afternoon, go to Beihai Park (10 RMB entrance fee). Climb the White Pagoda for a panoramic view towards Zhongnanhai. Exit from the North Gate of Beihai Park, and it's just a few hundred meters to Shichahai. Enjoy the sunset over the lake from the Yinding Bridge in the evening. The Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven are also worth visiting, but visiting four in one day is too rushed; it's better to choose two to explore at a leisurely pace.
⚠️ Bottled water in the scenic areas costs 10 RMB per bottle. Bring your own thermos; free hot water is available at subway stations and parks. For accommodation, choose a hostel near Nanluoguxiang (80 RMB for a bed). It's right next to Metro Line 6, making it convenient to get around.
7️⃣ Mudanjiang City | Heilongjiang Province
Mudanjiang in September is already cool, but the Diaoshuilou Waterfall at Jingpo Lake is still in its high-water season, with the roar of the water deafening. The entrance fee is 100 yuan, and the sightseeing bus is separate. I recommend walking into the scenic area along the lakeside boardwalk; the air is full of moisture and the scent of pine.
⏰ Arrive at 10 am to see the rainbow over the waterfall; the angle is perfect.
After seeing the waterfall, a boat tour of the lake is another expense, costing 80 yuan for half the tour. Personally, I don't think it's necessary to take the whole tour, as the first half has the most concentrated scenery. Mudanjiang city is small; stay in a budget hotel near the train station for 150 yuan a night. There's a bus stop downstairs that goes directly to the Jingpo Lake scenic area, a journey of one and a half hours.
🍜 In the evening, go to Dongyi Pedestrian Street for a bowl of Korean cold noodles with sweet and sour pork; it's a satisfying meal for about 40 yuan per person.
⚠️ It's windy by the lake, so wear a windproof jacket, not just a short-sleeved shirt. 8️⃣ Haikou City | Hainan
Haikou is much cheaper than Sanya and has a more vibrant local atmosphere. The entrance fee to Wugong Temple is 20 yuan. The garden isn't large, but the ancient trees and red walls are very photogenic. ⏰ After 4 pm, the sunlight shines down at an angle, making it less crowded and quieter, perfect for a leisurely stroll. After visiting, take a bus to Qilou Old Street (free). The arcade buildings in the Nanyang style are lined up in rows, with various snack shops on the ground floor.
The spicy soup rice and Qingbuliang (a sweet dessert soup) at Qilou Old Street are worth trying; you can eat until you're stuffed for about 30 yuan per person. The entrance fee to the Crater Park is 40 yuan. Climbing to the top of the crater takes only half an hour. The tropical plants along the way are lush, and the air is so fresh you'll want to take a jar home.
📍 There are vendors selling dried volcanic lychees at the park entrance for 10 yuan a pack, cheaper than inside the scenic area. I chose accommodation near Qilou Old Street; guesthouses cost just over 100 yuan a night. In the evening, you can easily walk downstairs to the night market, which is lively until 11 pm.
🚄 It only costs 8 yuan to take the high-speed rail from Meilan Airport to the city center; don't take a taxi as soon as you arrive.
I've calculated the costs for each of these 8 cities for you; this isn't the kind of "cheap and then rip you off" scheme. September is the perfect time to travel—fewer crowds, better scenery, and see the world on a budget. Do you have a city in mind? Let's chat in the comments, and I'll help you figure out how to save money.
