Greece Epirus Zagori Vikos Gorge Mossy Stone Forest Villageseasytravelpost
#easytravelpost The Vikos Gorge is the world's deepest relative to its width (1,100 m deep, 1,100 m wide at the rim) — cutting through the Zagori region's 46 stone villages. The walk I did was the Vikos→Kipi descent via the old mule path, 5 km, 2.5 hrs down, +1.5 hrs back up, free. The mossy half is the 1.5 km through the stone forest of weathered limestone pinnacles below the Voidomatis River bridge, where Ctenidium and Sphagnum pad the pinnacle bases and Racomitrium films the wet rock face. I drove Ioannina→Vikos (45 km, €12 in petrol, €5 parking at the Vikos viewpoint), started at 8 a.m. in May.
The path is paved with xysti (flat river stone) in the upper section, then dirt-and-rock through the pinnacles. The Voidomatis runs emerald at 480 m; the moss lives in the shaded north face of the pinnacles where the gorge's microclimate holds 90% humidity year-round. The Kipi bridge (19th c., one of 5 in the area) is the turnaround — a single-arch stone span with water 2°C.
Mistake: I drove a rental Fiat 500 up the Vikos access road in November — ice on the switchbacks, slid 1 m toward the drop, reversed, parked at the lower lot, walked 1.5 km extra up. AWD or spring–Oct only. Second mistake: I paid €8 for a "Zagori map" in Ioannina — the trail is signed with red-and-white paint, the map was a generic Epirus sheet, useless. Third: I swam in the Voidomatis — local shepherd: "that's the village drinking source, €150 fine, and it's 4°C, you'll cramp".
Buy in Vikos village: a €3 kontosouvli pita, not the €16 taverna. Gear: 2 L water, €20 trail shoes, €25 fleece — gorge rim 1,400 m drops to 12°C at the river.
Local rule: gorge free, no entry fee, no drone near the monasteries (Dilofo, Kipi), stay on the mule path, the pinnacle bases are not climbing walls. The moss on the limestone pinnacle is the Voidomatis' mist-catch — step on cut stone.
Opinion: Zagori sells the stone bridges; the mossy pinnacle forest in the gorge bottom is the 45-min half that makes you feel like you're in a Cappadocia-underground. Should the Zagori Municipality add a €3 honour box at the Kipi bridge for path restoration, or keep the free descent? I'd add it. Would you drive 45 km of mountain road for a mossy limestone pinnacle walk at 480 m?
