The Independence Memorial Hall, located in the center of Independence Square, was built to commemorate the country's independence from British colonial rule, recreated the hall where the royal family received the pilgrims during the Kandy Dynasty, highlighting the prosperity of the Kandy Dynasty. The pillars of the memorial are engraved with 28 beautiful murals depicting the history and myths of Sri Lankan Buddhism. The memorial is surrounded by 60 different and lifelike lions representing 60 kings in Sri Lanka's history. The introduction said that it was stone sculptures, but it looked like concrete. The sand that fell off the cement made the lion become "cockroach". There are hidden passages to the underground at the four corners of the memorial hall, which is distributed in 101 rooms, and houses some important archives in Sri Lanka. It is open to the public as a small museum. On the north side of the memorial stands a statue of Sennayak, leader of the Sri Lankan National Independence Movement, who was Prime Minister of the first government after independence. On May 22, 1972, the country was renamed Ceylon as the Republic of Sri Lanka. "Sri Lanka" in Sinhalese means "land of joy" or "land of light and richness", has the name "the jewel kingdom" and "the pearl on the Indian Ocean".
