The dam, commonly referred to as the Nasser to Sadat period, was the Soviet-assisted dam, at least for decades, which was called the world's tallest. It effectively contained the Nile's floods from mythological times. It provided the basis for rapid population growth in the Nile Delta decades after World War II, but it also led to a crisis in the local environment.
