Originally named Ashoka Temple, it was renamed Chengshi Daocheng during the Sui Dynasty, and finally officially designated Famen Temple by imperial decree of Emperor Gaozu of Tang. The Famen Cultural Scenic Area is built around the ancient Famen Temple. Its core area comprises the Mountain Gate Square, Buddha Light Avenue, Famen Temple itself, the He Shi Relic Pagoda, the Famen Temple Museum, and numerous art Buddha statues and garden sculptures, comprehensively showcasing the achievements of Buddhist culture in philosophy, politics, and art, aiming to highlight the splendid history and culture of the Chinese nation. Expansion of the scenic area began in March 2007. It officially opened to the public on May 9, 2009. On October 11, 2014, the Famen Temple Buddhist Cultural Scenic Area in Baoji City, Shaanxi Province, was awarded the title of National AAAAA-level Tourist Scenic Area after rigorous review by the National Tourism Scenic Area Quality Rating Committee.
