The Basingstoke Canal, a British canal, was completed in 1794 to connect Basingstoke with the Thames in Webridge via the Weybridge channel. The aim was to allow ships to sail from the docks of East London to Basingstoke. But it never achieved any commercial success. Commercial use ended in 1910. The canal is open all year round. The lock-up time is limited due to the very limited water supply. The two parts of the canal are sites of special scientific significance and nature conservation comment sites. It is the most abundant aquatic area in England.
