Lovely place but careful drive
Once you reached the top, the view was fantastic. However, there's a price to pay. Before you reach there, you need to navigate a 5km stretch of gravel / dirt road, where only a single car can pass. ...
With blue sky and good weather this is a lovely place to take in the view
We had hit lucky with the weather, a Sunday in early October, and it was blue skies and warm on the north east cost of Hokkaido. We were travelling from Abashiri to Shiretoko so this was out of our wa...
If you go on a dirt road from National Highway 239, there is a parking lot, and if you go up the stairs to the observatory, you can overlook Lake Saroma and see the Shiretoko mountain range. It's a little-known spot because it's a place where tourists don't come very much, but it's a scenery that you'd like to come back to see again.
I followed the navigation system, but on the way I went up the dirt mountain road that I thought was really okay and reached the parking lot. A magnificent observatory is built up the stairs. The weather was nice so I could see it. This view is worth it.
It's hard to go, but the view from the top makes you forget it. You can see the magnificent Lake Saroma to the corner 々. If you drive on the mountain road for about 20 minutes, you will see the parking lot. It takes about 10 minutes on foot from there. You can go from both the Yubetsu side and the Abashiri side, but it is recommended because the road is wider on the Yubetsu side. If you improve the road, it's a place where tourists come soon, but you may think it's good for those who like unexplored areas.

A superb view at the end of a one-way dirt road

Worth going if you want to see Lake Saroma
