　There was a large park called Shinka Park on a hill on the south side of the town called Shizunai in Shinhidaka Town. This park was dotted with Ainu-related facilities such as the Ainu Folklore Museum. In the back of the park was a "sculpture of Shakushine". Shakushine was once the head of the Ainu around here. The statue we saw was a new statue that stands alongside the tower of Yucal.

　Shakushine is the chief of the Ainu who lived in the present Shinhidaka town. In Hokkaido, Ainu people 々 have lived since ancient times. The Matsumae domain was exclusively recognized by the Edo Shogunate for trade with Ainu people 々, but the dissatisfaction with the unfair and unilateral transactions of the Matsumae domain erupted.
