Heixiong Valley: I rarely use the word "stunning" until I experienced autumn here.
As a traveler who chases the seasons year-round, I thought I had built up enough immunity to autumn colors—I have seen the layered forests of Kanas, photographed the golden poplars of Ejina, and walked through the red leaf corridors of Guangwu Mountain. But the moment my feet stepped into Heixiong Valley, all adjectives about autumn seemed pale, and only two words remained in my mind: stunning.
Entering the valley entrance: stepping into a kingdom of colors
The entrance to Heixiong Valley is not flashy, even somewhat low-key. But when I turned the first bend, the scene before me made me stop instantly—it was not just red, nor just yellow, but a full explosion of colors throughout the entire valley.
The mountains on both sides seemed to be dipped in a palette spilled by God: maples burned in fiery red, maples in bright egg-yolk yellow, ginkgo in pure gold, firs in calm dark green, poplars in gentle orange-brown... All these colors were not layered but intertwined, blended, and collided, creating an almost unreal visual feast under the clear autumn sunlight.
Hiking deeper: every step a marvel
Following the stream upward, this hiking trail itself is a moving exhibition of colors.
The creek water is transparent amber, reflecting the colorful banks, with fallen leaves drifting slowly like colorful sailboats on the surface. Sunlight filters through layers of colorful leaves, casting mottled shadows; walking here, one feels like part of this oil painting.
The most unforgettable is the magic of light:
· Early morning, mist wraps the mountain waist, the colorful forest faintly visible, like a dreamy fairyland
· Noon, sunlight shines directly, all colors reach peak saturation, so vivid they almost overflow the eyes
· Evening, the slanting sun edges every leaf with gold, making the entire valley glow warmly
I rarely find myself repeatedly amazed by the changing light in the same place—but in Heixiong Valley, I did.
Three stunning moments
Overlook from the viewing platform
When I climbed a viewing platform inside the valley and looked back, my breath almost stopped. The entire valley stretched out like a huge colorful tapestry on the earth, with the winding stream as a silver thread linking all the colors. This grand yet delicate visual impact is something photos can never fully capture.
Passing through the red leaf tunnel
There is a small path where maples on both sides curve inward, forming a natural red tunnel. Walking through it, the dense red leaf canopy overhead and the soft red leaf carpet underfoot, with only the rustling footsteps as sound—at that moment, I felt as if I had crossed into another dimension.
Contemplation by the water
By a pool, I sat down to rest. Various fallen leaves floated on the water like a natural abstract painting. The colorful forest on the opposite bank was perfectly reflected, blurring the boundary between reality and illusion. This perfect balance of ultimate tranquility and dazzling brilliance is achieved in Heixiong Valley.
Why is the autumn color in Heixiong Valley so special?
After talking with locals, I understood why the autumn here is so stunning:
· Extremely high plant diversity: the valley has many tree species, each changing color at slightly different times, creating a long viewing period and layered effect
· Well-preserved natural state: low development, minimal human traces, presenting nature in its most authentic form
· Terrain creates a three-dimensional painting: the valley’s topography gives depth to the colorful forest rather than a flat display
· Crystal-clear water like a mirror: streams and pools provide perfect reflections, amplifying the beauty
Practical information
Best viewing period: mid-October to early November (varies slightly each year due to temperature)
Recommended visit time: at least a full day; if possible, stay overnight to see different scenes at dawn and dusk
Hiking difficulty: moderate, some sections have slopes; wear comfortable hiking shoes
Accommodation: a few guesthouses at the valley entrance; booking in advance is recommended
Notes:
· Protect the environment, take all trash with you
· Do not pick plants or disturb wildlife (black bears do appear here, hence the name)
· Large temperature difference between morning and evening; bring warm clothing
Final words
When I left Heixiong Valley, my camera was full of photos, but I knew none could fully reproduce the immersive shock. Some landscapes are meant to be seen with your own eyes, measured by your own steps, and felt with your heart.
If you are tired of the same old autumn color promotions, if you want to find a place where the word "stunning" regains its weight—then on a clear autumn day, come to Heixiong Valley.
Here, autumn is not just a season but a waking, colorful dream.
I am the traveler always on the road. Follow me, and I will take you to see those stunning places you won’t find on any map.

新年好去處2026
The journey of life is never defined by physical stature. The true journey is always a trek with a heart as vast as the mountains and seas, and aspirations reaching far and wide. One may be small and ordinary in stature, yet possess a boundless ambition that transcends the ordinary—this is the most moving spirit of the journey. Walking through the world, there's no need to be fixated on external physical attributes. Even if one's posture isn't particularly striking or eye-catching, one can still traverse the long road ahead with boundless enthusiasm, breaking through personal boundaries with each journey. The journey never favors the tall and strong, but only the persistent and resilient soul. Crossing rugged paths, enduring long journeys, and persevering through the loneliness of solitude, though the body may be limited, the ambition in the heart is never limited, always yearning for the vast world, persistently striving and growing. With ordinary stature, we traverse thousands of miles of wind and dust, neither arrogant nor humble, steadily moving forward, measuring the world with our footsteps, supporting our vision with our ambitions, allowing our limited stature to bear boundless hopes and pursuits. The true meaning of a journey lies not in outward brilliance, but in inner strength. It's about having a broad mind despite ordinary stature, lofty aspirations despite unremarkable appearance. It's about cultivating oneself through adventures across mountains and seas, living a vibrant life through constant movement, experiencing the world's myriad aspects with a humble body, and navigating the long journey of life with lofty ambitions.
