This August, Europe’s largest annual hot air balloon event is back. As hundreds of hot air balloons get ready to take to the summer skies and thousands of people flock to the South West city, we’re preparing for four days of festival fun. Founded in 1979, Bristol International Balloon Fiesta has become a popular phenomenon, with its daily mass ascents attracting visitors from all over the world. Along with the overhead action, there’s food and entertainment, too. From street-food stalls to live music, cool bars and children’s activities, it’s a festival that’s perfect for all the family.

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta will be held from Thursday 10th August to Sunday 13th August. Run by a non-for-profit organisation, it’s a completely free event and requires no tickets. The grand opening will be at 12pm on the Thursday, with the first ascent taking place at 6pm. The Thursday is also one of two night’s where you can see the spectacular Nightglow, where over 20 hot air balloons light up the night sky to the sounds of BBC Radio Bristol. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, things will kick off nice and early at 6am – grab a cup of coffee from one of the stalls and watch the picture-perfect display of hot balloons rising above the city. The event will come to a close on the Sunday after the final mass ascent at 6pm.

Located at Ashton Court Estate in Bristol, there are a range of ways you can get to the Fiesta. If you’re travelling by train, Bristol Temple Meads is the closest station. From here, you can get a Stagecoach Shuttle Bus which will take you to the Fiesta. If arriving into Bristol city centre by coach, you can also get a shuttle bus to the Fiesta from Bristol Bus and Coach Station. Or if you fancy a bit more of an adventure, you can walk or ride the pedestrian and cycle-friendly ‘Festival Way’ which connects the city centre with the venue. Alternatively, you can drive direct to the Fiesta, although parking tickets must be purchased in advance.
