China has officially announced that British passport holders will be allowed to enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days, following talks between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on 29 January.

This marks the first time the UK has received unilateral visa-free access to China and brings Britain in line with nearly 50 other countries, including France, Germany, Australia and Japan.

At the end of his two-day visit to Beijing, Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed:

The official entry process for UK visa-free travel to China has not yet been published.
The steps below are based on procedures currently applied to European visa-free travellers.

Once the policy is officially implemented and operational details are released, this section will be updated.

Starting from 20 November 2025, China requires all travelers to complete an electronic arrival card (“Arrival Card”). This replaces the paper information sheet previously distributed on the plane or at the arrival airport.

The fully digital procedure applies to all travelers, regardless of nationality, visa holders, adults, and minors, and is valid for all points of entry into China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau).

Currently, this new mandatory formality can be completed up to three months before departure. This allows travelers to plan ahead, provided their information remains the same (flight number, etc.). Furthermore, it is only valid for the declared arrival date. This means it must be completed for each new arrival in China.

You can fill in the form through the National Immigration Administration website, its service platforms, the NIA 12367 app, or the official WeChat and Alipay mini-programs. You may also scan the official QR code on your phone to access the system.

National Immigration Administration Government Service Platform

For travellers who cannot complete the form online, you can fill it in upon arrival at a Chinese port of entry by scanning the QR code on-site or using the smart self-service machines. Paper arrival cards are still available if needed.

Step 1: Fill Out the Arrival Card

You will need to provide personal information, passport details, and travel plans. If you cannot fill it out online, you can complete it at the port using smart devices or a paper form.

Option A: Paper form (available on plane/at immigration)

Option B: Digital form (National Immigration Administration website, the "NIA 12367" app, and WeChat/Alipay mini-programs)

Step 2: Arrive at the Port

Bring your passport, visa, arrival card (electronic or paper), and any other necessary documents. Go to the immigration hall at your port of entry.

Step 3: Go Through Immigration Check

Show your passport, visa, and arrival card to the immigration officer. You may need to provide fingerprints and face recognition. Once your information is verified, the officer will stamp your passport.

Step 4: Collect Your Luggage and Pass Customs

Pick up your checked luggage and go through customs. Declare any items that need to be reported, such as large amounts of cash or restricted goods.

Step 5: Special Cases

Certain travellers do not need to fill out the arrival card. Here are the 7 categories exempt from filling out the Arrival Card:

  1. Holding a People's Republic of China Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card
  2. Holding a Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (Non-Chinese Citizens)
  3. Holding a group visa or eligible for group visa-free entry
  4. Transiting directly within 24 hours without leaving the restricted area of the port
  5. Entering and exiting on the same cruise ship
  6. Entering through fast lanes
  7. Foreign employees of exit–entry transport vehicles

Tips: Check the official sources before travelling to ensure you have the correct documents. Be patient and follow the instructions of immigration staff. Ask for help from staff if anything is unclear.

UK citizens must still apply for a visa if they:

Plan to work or receive payment
Stay longer than 30 days
Enter for study, journalism, or long-term projects
Require multiple-entry visas for frequent travel

✔ Do not cancel existing visa appointments until the policy is officially implemented.
✔ Monitor official announcements from:

Chinese Embassy in the UK
UK government travel advice
Airlines and immigration authorities

✔ Expect the policy to cover:

Tourism
Business meetings
Short-term projects
Transit within China
❌ Not covered: Paid employment.

This visa-free policy has been officially announced but not yet operational. Final implementation procedures, effective dates, and entry conditions are still pending.

📌 This article will be updated as soon as official regulations and procedures are released.
